[cayugabirds-l] Sunshine brings out Brown Creeper and Carolina Wren
A little bit of sunshine seems to bring a Brown Creeper to our box-elder every time. It seems to appear with the sunlight. Can't wait for Spring to hear its tinkling song again. Today the sun also brought back a Carolina Wren to our feeders -- first return since CBC count week, although I heard a little snatch of trill yesterday. Now waiting for the pair to come regularly to the suet. Other birds at our feeders: T.Titmouse, A.Tree Sparrow, White-thr Sparrow, Mourning Doves, House Finches, Goldfinches, RBWoodpecker, Downy, and many Juncos (I will go crazy looking for Chris Wood's Cassiar Junco). No Pine Siskins or Purple Finches have shown up here. Nari Mistry, Ellis Hollow Rd. -- Nari B. [cayugabirds-l] Backyard Raven and TV
A few minutes ago, I was watching our resident Turkey Vulture circling swooping low (30ft) all around our backyard and then settling on a back corner tree to spread its wings in the sun. A Raven swooped down and was immediately mobbed by three crows, until it circled back over the TV and was chased away. The large size and the wedge tail was immediately recognizable, even w/o the mobbing crows. For several weeks there has been a deer carcass just outside the SE corner of our deer-fenced yard, which is why the TV and the Raven are interested. Nari Mistry, Ellis Hollow rd. -- Nari B. [cayugabirds-l] shorteared, yes; snowy , no
Just a quick note to anyone interested. Cayuga Bird Club field trip this morning saw one Shorteared Owl just north of the intersection of Wycoff and Rock River on the west side of the road. Gray house with line of smallish spruces along south edge- owl was roosting in spruce with tallish post near it. No sign of snowy owl in the area, but we did have a small mixed flock of horned lark and lapland longspur flying back and forth along Wycoff. [cayugabirds-l] Ovid birding (no Snowy Owl), Sunday a.m.
Susan Danskin I spent the morning wandering roads in Ovid staring at suspicious lumps of snow and other inanimate objects and not seeing any Snowy Owl. We encountered 5 other parties, each with the same story. A couple other people were planning to try later, and since I haven't heard from them, I suspect they had similar luck. Maybe the Snowy Owl is still around, and it roosts someplace out of view during the day, only sitting atop trees on street corners toward evening. The first party we met was Tim Lenz, Jay McGowan, and Brad Walker, who were kind enough to tell us about the roosting SHORT-EARED OWLS (there were at least 3 at the time) which Colleen Richard mentioned near Rock River Rd Wycoff Rd.Although we missed the Lapland Longspurs among the many HORNED LARKS we saw, we did find one AMERICAN PIPIT alongside Wycoff Rd and 2 SAVANNAH SPARROWS along Munson Rd. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --

We spotted it from a distance and we approached it slowly in our car and it did not fly even when we were just below it parked in front of the house. [cayugabirds-l] Ovid Owls
Hi All, There were at least three Short-eared Owls present yesterday evening (21 Jan 2012) in the area in Ovid previously described by Marty Schlabach (thanks Marty and Mary Jean!). There was one owl perched on a post along Rock River Road, just north of the intersection of Wycoff, at 4:55 pm. This bird then took flight over the field east of Rock River and north of Wycoff (north of the farm at the intersection), and was soon joined by two others in flight. All three birds eventually moved eastward, and were likely better viewed from along Wycoff. But, one bird eventually came back closer to Rock River, caught some sort of gray rodent, and proceeded to eat it while perched on a short post right along Rock River Road. A great show! This was all between 4:55 and 5:20 pm. [cayugabirds-l] Adult Bald Eagle
First Adult BALD EAGLE for my yard list and year list (have an immature from a couple summers back for the yard list so this is only the 2nd one I've ever seen from here). About 330pm, right after a stream of crows had flown over, I noticed a much bigger, flat profile bird coming from the same direction. Fortunately, had the binocs so got a great thrill to see the white head of the big Baldie coming right at me. It flew down Asbury Road direction probably about 300' high, took one more half turn, then headed off in the direction of the lake. I'm about 2.5 mi north of Pyramid Mall just off Triphammer Rd. Shortly after, a couple TURKEY VULTUREs appeared (they are quite common here) which made a nice 'big bird soaring profile' contrast.
