[cayugabirds-l] golden eagle
On my early morning Brooktondale walk today (Jan. 2), I spied an adult GOLDEN EAGLE. I was on Central Chapel Rd.; the eagle came up out of the woods behind Anne Marie's house flapping and spiraling, slowly gaining altitude as it searched for a thermal. It got to about 200' and continued its search as it slowly drifted south. Probably went right over Melissa's place. [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls, bluebirds
My flock of Redpolls continues to grow. I'd guess it's up to 30 by now. Donna called her feeders a mob scene. Mine are like that too. I've got hundreds of birds milling around the feeders at once, so it's very hard to actually count a specific species. I also had two male Bluebirds out on the weeping cherry. I haven't seen any Bluebirds here since early fall. Re: [cayugabirds-l] town lists for 2012
Kevin (and other Ithaca, Dryden, Lansing, Tompkins Cayuga Lake Basin listers),Sorry, I was pretty lazy with the Cup wiki for 2012. Instead of saving all the 2011 stuff on another page, I made a 2012 Cayuga Lake Basin table but put it on the regular page above the 2011 CLB table. In 2011 there was so little participation in the town competitions that I didn't make the tables for them for 2012 right away. And nobody asked for them all year. I did keep my totals, although I didn't make a big effort. I can fill in my line in each of those yet-to-be-drawn tables, and they will make you and Jay look good. It isn't too hard to do this stuff, and anybody could edit those pages, but right now I want to get the 2013 records running.--Dave NutterOn Jan 02, 2013, at 01:33 PM, "Kevin J. [cayugabirds-l] More CBC birds for 2013
In talking to Chris Wood some more today, I realized that he had seen several other species yesterday that were not found by official counters of the CBC -- really shows what kind of diversity a top birder can find when they are covering the whole area looking for target birds instead of walking all over counting chickadees and juncos. In addition to the Surd Scoter, Long-tailed Diuck, Glaucous Gull, N. Goshawk, and N. Saw Whet Owl, Chris also had numbers of CANVASBACK from Hog Hole in the afternoon, a HORNED GREBE near the lighthouse, and a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW with Tree Sparrows somewhere near Drake Rd. That would bump our 2013 total to 98, a new Ithaca high count, PLUS Chris saw Green-winged Teal, N. Shoverler, and Lesser black-backed Gull all juist north of the circle at Myer's Point.
