[cayugabirds-l] airport/Kendal

2023-03-18 Thread Donna Lee Scott
At about noon I was driving along Snyder Road north of the Ithaca International
Airport  looking for possible N. Harriers.

I saw instead the usual Red-tailed Hawk, who, annoyed at me driving slowly by
it perched on the N-S eastern fence,
took off and acted like a Harrier, flying very low over the ground to a more
distant place to perch on another fence.

Besides the Red-tail, I saw some A. Crows and I think I heard an Eastern
Meadowlark; it sang only part of its usual song.
I did not see it.

Meanwhile, here at the old folks home, Nelly Farnum is sure she heard a
Woodcock peenting over on Mount Kendal !
We are going out tomorrow at dusk to try to hear/see it. I may go tonight after
dinner.

I had a pretty Song Sparrow in my “back yard” for a while yesterday.
Finally, our Kendal Screech Owl has not been seen in its perfect tree hole for
over a week ☹.

[cayugabirds-l] Airport and Lott farm Snowies up to 4.

2017-01-05 Thread metetlow
Yesterday around 330 Dominic Sherony and I had one snow owl at the lot farm
rotating between the grass as previously described and up on the Porta potty's
and three more snowy owls at the airport, one prominently on the west side of
the runway and the other 2 hunkered down behind tiny snowbanks and tiny grass
mounds also on the west side. Please minimize disturbance because I know
attempts are going to be made to band the two that have not been banded.

[cayugabirds-l] Airport and West Dryden (no owls), Sun 12/8

2013-12-08 Thread Mark Chao
Tilden and I went looking for owls and other birds on Sunday morning. We
found no unusual birds at all on two passes along Snyder and Neimi Road
behind the Ithaca airport, nor at the intersection of Scofield and Buck
Roads near the Dryden/Groton town line, nor anywhere in between.

The highlight of our outing was a fine conversation with Mr. Griffin, the
owner of the Christmas tree farm on Buck Road, where Short-eared Owls have
roosted in past winters. Mr. Griffin says that he hasn't seen any owls
there this year, while also noting how conspicuous the owls have been when
present. He observes in general how the abundance of insects and birds
seems to have declined steeply since his youth, when kids needed to look out
for grasshoppers lest one collide painfully with an eye. Mr. Griffin also
regaled us about how he and his friend David Allen (son of Lab founder
Arthur) made a trip through Aurora many years ago. They saw a Gyrfalcon
stooping on a flock of crows!

[cayugabirds-l] airport Meadowlarks/yard Towhee

2013-04-25 Thread Donna Scott
At around 3 PM Wed. 4/24, I drove along Cherry and Snyder Roads back of the
airport.

I saw or heard 5 - 6 E. MEADOWLARKS along the way to Mohawk Rd.

3 of the Meadowlarks were singing in the grass, unseen, near Cherry Road, in
front of the Analytical Tox bldg.
Then all of a sudden they all flew up and around and towards my car (I was
inside w/ windows open).
One flew over the car to the other side of road, and one flew back toward the
grass by the big airport fence and the 3rd one landed right by the car in grass
and sat there making some other neat sounds from a constantly open mouth, for a
while.
I was impressed with how camouflaged it was sitting in the grass with only a
little yellow showing. Even though I was looking right at it, sometimes my eye
would lose sight of it.

Also saw a male KESTREL on the fence running perpendicular to Snyder Rd.
towards the red brick aviation bldg. (not the terminal), plus many other
expected birds, including a RED TAILED HAWK.

Stopped in at Salt Pt. at 5:15 pm for a look at the 2 OSPREYS on and then near
the new nest pole. One attempted to catch a fish but did not succeed.
I hope the barrier to cars driving out to the point is finished soon, since
there are a lot of hot rodders tearing around the driveways there and it
seemed like it disturbed the birds, possibly.

This morning about 7:30 AM, I saw a male E. TOWHEE feeding on the ground in my
front yard; FOY!

[cayugabirds-l] Airport Shrike, Rough-legged Hawks

2013-03-02 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
This afternoon, I drove around some open-country areas near Ithaca and Dryden,
hoping to pick up some field birds. I was rewarded right away by a NORTHERN
SHRIKE behind the Ithaca Airport -- the bird (a crisp and frosty adult) was on
top of a thin tree on Snyder Rd. directly across from the wrecked cars inside
the airport fence. It flew off to the north. A nice light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK was hunting over the airport fields.

I then headed over to Purvis Rd. and Cornell Lane south of Dryden. On Cornell
Lane, a large manure spread was visible and a flock of 200± HORNED LARKS was
feeding far out from the road. In the horizontal snow squall I could not pick
out any longspurs (should have headed up to Triangle Diner instead :( ).
Another light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was hunting over these fields. On my way
back, I drove down Lake Rd. and a dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK flew over the
road.

I then checked fields around George Rd. and Scoffield Rd. for Short-eared Owls
between 5 and 5:30, without success.

Earlier in the day, I scanned the gulls on the ice at Stewart Park, and as with
every other visit this winter, failed to find anything other than the usual 3
species.

[cayugabirds-l] airport grass lands mowed

2012-07-20 Thread Donna Scott
Much of the Tompkins County Airport grass lands on the north side of the
airport area was mowed this week (7/19/12), but the little meadow along Mohawk
Rd. between Snyder Rd. and Etna Rd. is unmowed. It is bordered by shrubby
bushes and some trees on two sides.
Besides the birds reported here ( to Ebird), I saw a Coyote with an injured
front leg, but it was getting around OK.

I was also in the area on Snyder Rd. near Warren and Cherry Rds. on Wednesday,
7/18/12, before most of the mowing was done; then I saw a few E. MEADOWLARKS,
including one carrying mouthfulls of food into a long grass area, where I
assumed there might be a nest. Unfortunately, by today (7/20) that part was all
mowed.

[cayugabirds-l] Airport

2010-03-28 Thread Ryan Douglas
I took advantage of yesterday's calm winds and sunny skies to take my bike
out for the first time in 2010. I opted for my usual birding route behind
the Ithaca airport and over to the Neimi Rd. ponds. I am happy to report
that I saw two AMERICAN KESTRELS along Warren Road. I saw a few RING-NECKED
DUCKS both on the pond immediately east of the runway and on the larger pond
behind the series of ponds on Neimi Rd. However, other than 5+ RED-TAILED
HAWKS and a lot of AMERICAN CROWS there weren't too many notable birds
yesterday.

As Dave mentioned in an earlier post, I'll soon be leaving Ithaca. I'm
hoping to make one last half-day trip up the lake on either Saturday April
10 or Sunday April 11 (weather and packing permitting). If anyone might be
interested in joining me, please contact me off list.

Good birding,
