Re: [cayugabirds-l] American Tree Sparrows
There has been a quite small flock of mixed white-throats and tree sparrows along the 2 track N of Hile School rd. Between 148 and 220. Encountered 3-4 tree sparrows in brushy spots next to road also. But not daily. Maybe 2 seen at my feeders at 147 but less regularly than purple and house finches for sure. Re: [cayugabirds-l] American Tree Sparrows
Here in Mecklenburg I had several White-throated Sparrows in late October and they only stayed for a few days.Since then, only one or two here for the last three weeks. And a Tree-Sparrow on November 3rd just for that day, but only one since then and that one did not stay. Last year my eBird lists show having 3 to 9 WTSP from late November on. But the TRSP only start coming to my property early January - one at a time. I am hoping for a surge in their numbers after the first good snow. Re: [cayugabirds-l] American Tree Sparrows
A flock of about a dozen White-throated Sparrows has been working my yard and neighborhood lately; seen as recently as this morning. No Tree Sparrows here, but several Purple Finches and Red-breasted Nuthatches appear at the feeders each day. Pileated Woodpeckers are tearing great strips of bark off the dying ash trees! Sunday’s snow might shake things up a bit… -Geo > On Dec 9, 2022, at 3:11 PM, John Gregoire > wrote: > > > We had a three individuals arrive in November, stay a few days and nothing > since. [cayugabirds-l] American Tree Sparrows; Peregrine Falcon
Today’s snowy weather brought at least 3 and maybe as many as 5 American Tree Sparrows to feed in the weeds surrounding my garden, a first for the season in the yard. And during my Loon Watch I saw a Peregrine Falcon passing just to my north flying east at 0806, maybe going toward Cornell. Later I scoped the west face of Bradfield Hall but did not see any bird sitting on the usual perch there. However, at 1450 I did notice a Peregrine Falcon perched on the SW edge of the top of the old gray smokestack for the abandoned Morse Chain / Emerson Power Transmission Factory low on South Hill in Ithaca. It was still there at dusk. That’s the second time this autumn that I have seen a Peregrine atop that smokestack, so maybe it’s a regular perch to keep an eye on. It’s closer to my home than Bradfield, so I find these scoped “yard bird” Peregrine views more satisfying. - - Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] American Tree Sparrows "in song"
Having read the guides, males in a flock of American Tree Sparrows at the Stevenson Road Compost Facility are singing--- "in late winter before the spring migration" (All About Birds) . An unfamiliar song for me, but very sweet. The flock was hanging in the low shrubbery at the two-track that goes north where the road into the mounds makes an abrupt right/east turn. I have encountered a flock of 10+ along the drive several times this winter. Not a glorious mass of goose and swan, but extremely spring-y! [cayugabirds-l] American Tree Sparrows on the increase
Just thought it might be worth reporting that today I counted 42 American Tree Sparrows under and on my feeders, my highest count yet.
