[cayugabirds-l] First 2023 Cayuga Lake Basin Lapland Longspur

2023-01-24 Thread Dave Nutter
Yesterday (23 Jan) Reuben Stoltzfus found a Lapland Longspur among a flock of
80 Snow Buntings along Kings Corners Rd near McCulloch Rd in the Town of
Varick. As far as I know, this is the first record of the species this year in
the Cayuga Lake Basin.

Most of the records I use to compile the list are from eBird, which is
available to the public. Some are from CayugaBirds-L, to which many local
birders subscribe. But Reuben reported this directly to me, so I’m sharing it
here.

[cayugabirds-l] First detection of a migratory bird by CBC’s second Motus Station

2022-09-06 Thread Diane Morton
This June, the Cayuga Bird Club installed its second Motus station for
detection of radio-tagged migratory birds. This new station is located on
Cornell University property near the Hartung-Boothroyd Observatory on Mount
Pleasant. With this receiver and our Motus receiver at Myers Point, we are
supporting research that uses radio telemetry to study migration. When a
radio-tagged bird flies by a Motus receiver, the location, date, and time
of its detection is logged and shared with the international Motus network,
which is operated by Birds Canada (motus.org). The more receivers there are
along migration routes, the more details can be learned about flight
trajectories and migration timing for a variety of species.

We have just learned of our first detection at Mount Pleasant. On August
11, a *Semipalmated Plover* was detected on its southward flight. This bird
had been tagged on Hudson Bay in Manitoba in June. It was next detected on
August 11 by Motus stations on the south shore of Lake Ontario and at
Montezuma NWR before flying by Mount Pleasant. The most recent report for
the plover was in North Carolina, August 13. A map of the bird’s trajectory
can be seen at https://motus.org/data/track?tagDeploymentId=33465.

We are looking forward to learning what other birds will fly by our Motus
stations during Fall migration, and to seeing where they go. Two of the
birds detected by our Myers Point Motus station last fall made it to
Central America: a Tennessee Warbler to Costa Rica, and a Swainson’s Thrush
to Panama!

Saw a silent Yellow-billed Cuckoo around noon today at Hawthorn

We have a raven with a broken wing outside and the crows have discovered it.
It’s walking around, and I don’t think I could catch it. Anyone want to give
it some help? Otherwise we will just leave it be and let nature do its thing.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] First fall DE Junco 10/13/20

2020-10-13 Thread Linnea Garrepy
I've had Juncos stay around and breed for the past three summers! The first
brood this year was Cowbirds but they tried again and fledged DEJUs. Oh, and I
live in Syracuse, albeit a hilly, wooded part of the city.

Orioles, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. Catbirds and indigo bunting (1?) and finally
this am a hummer are turning my feeders into something a bit tropical looking.
More mild aggressive displays than I have ever seen. Catbirds doing a cute
little wide beak gape.

Fruit update: grosbeaks and maybe catbirds like split open bananas to go with
orange and peanut suet blocks.

HI all

I just want to note that
a) I have had more males than usual but that means 3, plus several females- in
a rural area- and
b) Bluewing bird listers in Broome have sent out 3 or 4 messages about
unusual/rare/first time visits from RB grosbeaks at their in-town feeders.

Hearing both lists with similar reports is like hearing echoes!

Re:[cayugabirds-l] first ever here

2019-05-13 Thread Deborah Schmidle
Although I don't live downtown, I live about 5 minutes from Cornell. I have had
a male at my feeder for over a week now. I think I have seen one maybe three
times in the past 15 years and then it was usually only for a day. I have
never had one stay for so long. A real treat.

I had one male on Saturday morning at my fall creek home. He wasn’t eating the
seeds and just seemed to be resting. This is the second time I’ve seen a
rose-breasted grosbeak at my house in the last 5 years – so, they are
definitely rare in downtown areas.

[cayugabirds-l] First SNOWY 12/05/18

2018-12-06 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Becky & I went birding for an hr. late yesterday on our way to Seneca
Falls. We were astounded that the lake above, & river below, Mud Lock
are both very high   river is over the banks along River Rd.. The
canal & river at May's is very high. I fear this high water is bad news
for later on. At Mud Lock we saw 3 prs. of mallards, a young bald eagle
in a tree & 2 ring-bill gulls.

No sandhill cranes were at Knox-Marcellus but saw lots of Canadas &
ducks. Due to lateness in the afternoon all Becky could ID were mallards
& gadwall. The muck on Armitage Rd. held nearly 200 swans, most on the
north side. Light was too poor to tell what kind.  A female harrier was
hunting along the edge of the road. Water is standing in the woods on
Armitage &, again, the river under the Armitage bridge is very high.

Van Cleef Lake in Seneca Falls had 3 pr. of common mergansers & one GBB
gull. Several robins flew over. The signs entering S. Falls are now
covered indicating that the name is Bedford Falls for the mo. of Dec. as
the community readies for the annual activities of "It's a Wonderful
Life" which begin tomorrow evening & run through the weekend.

The absolute highlight about 4:15 p.m. was the Snowy owl with reflected
sunlight giving it golden eyes,  Becky spotted it sitting on a  power
pole on private land.  Black markings on top of its head, indicated to
us that it had already been found & banded.

Here in Union Springs along with Canada geese flocks, we have seen only
a couple large flocks of snow geese & tremendous flocks of hundreds of
Am. crows that have come out from Auburn to feed in the corn fields and
our yard! Along Rte. 90 on Mill pond are mallards, gadwall & many
buffleheads.  Three squirrels pigging out on my feeders get fatter every
day.  A small hawk tried for 2 goldfinches but I didn't see if it succeeded.

Factory St. pond has buffles & mallards. Over the village we have seen a
bald eagle pair & an immature. I watched as an adult took a fish from
the lake at Frontenac boat launch & flew to a willow tree by Factory
pond to eat it.

[cayugabirds-l] First southbound migrants Broome Co.

2018-07-07 Thread David Nicosia
Had my first "fall" LESSER YELLOWLEGS at Upper Lisle County Park last
evening Broome Co. The bird was an adult in what appeared to me as worn
breeding plumage. I also had a small group of RING-BILLED GULLS (13)
loafing at Dorchester Park. This is the first group of these birds I have
seen since Spring migration. To my knowledge these birds don't breed in
Broome Co. Most of these birds were still in breeding plumage with a couple
2nd cycle birds. Nothing unusual, but interesting how quickly birds turn to
fall migration. Yesterday there was a strong cold front and northwest winds
that likely kicked this off. I also have seen reports from Montezuma that
there is a trickle of LESSER YELLOWLEGS and a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER.

[cayugabirds-l] First nest building robin

2017-04-11 Thread AB Clark
Sharp looking female American Robin took long streamers of grasses and tried
for log-sized goldenrod stalks to a nice solid crotch in an small ash this
morning. I have seen more action in the nest site this evening.

A Phoebe tried to fly into our garage, which I take as a nest site seeking sign.

And our FOY Chipping Sparrow is at the feeder, while the Tree Sparrows, here
two days ago, are apparently absent.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] First 2016 Cayuga Lake Basin Records list is updated

2016-06-04 Thread Dave Nutter
I have just recognized and corrected an error I made on the 2016 CLB First
Records list. My apologies. The Eastern Whip-poor-will in the town of Virgil is
OUTSIDE the basin. I am not aware of any Whip-poor-will so far this year in the
basin. Although the location was correct, Woodchuck Hill Rd near Gridley Creek
on the north side of NYS-392 east of the hamlet of Virgil, and indeed this rare
bird has been heard several times, I was mixing up the road name with a
different road much closer to 'downtown' Virgil, Holler Rd, which is near a
different stream that is the eastern edge the Cayuga Lake watershed. Gridley
Creek drains into the Tioughnioga River which goes south.

Eastern Whip-poor-will is another odd case. Brad Walker & Jay McGowan saw one
in their headlights along Bald Hill Road in Danby while doing a basin big day.
However the location on their eBird report drains into Michigan Hollow where
topo lines show that valley drains south to the Susquehanna, so it is out of
the Cayuga Lake Basin. On the other hand Jeffrey Smith reported hearing one in
Virgil at the very edge of the Basin but along a creek which clearly does drain
to Cayuga Lake. It's a pretty obvious sound, so I'm not sure why it hasn't been
confirmed on eBird yet.

[cayugabirds-l] First 2016 Cayuga Lake Basin Records list is updated

2016-05-30 Thread Dave Nutter
I think I have the 2016 Cayuga Lake Basin First Records list up to date again:

http://www.cayugabirdclub.org/Resources/cayuga-lake-basin-first-records

I wasn't intentionally waiting to update the list. I prefer to keep it current,
but it got ahead of me.

The expected locally breeding birds are all accounted for, I think.  There are
still shorebirds which may show up here on their way north, or we may have to
wait till early July when they start south again in larger numbers, lingering
longer, and ranging more widely. And of course there are still birds showing up
which simply appear to be lost, or to put it more kindly, exploring.

Please let me know of things on the list that look wrong - people, locations,
dates, whatever. With this much info and so many birds and birders there's a
high probability I've screwed up something, or at least made it appear
confusing.

I try to include names of people in parties who independently find a new
species on the first day. Parties are not necessarily in any order, but the
places are in the same order as the parties.

In the case of Black-bellied Plover the number of observers got very long when
a group of a dozen Cornell students on a basin big day found a bird in breeding
plumage at Knox-Marsellus in mid-afternoon overlapping in time with several
other observers, but in the evening at K-M Ann Mitchell & I found one in
non-breeding plumage. So I included everybody, because no single party had
clear priority over either bird.

The American Golden-Plovers at K-M that same day are a slightly different
story. The only people who appeared to independently identify them were the
student group.

The Ruff which the same group reported was not described in enough detail to
distinguish it from a large male Pectoral Sandpiper which Jay McGowan found
there that evening. If it gets accepted by eBird, I will include it.

White-rumped Sandpiper was reported a few days earlier than shown but I don't
know by whom (JF are you out there?). I like to include observers names, not
only to give credit, but also so that there's a possibility of discussing more
exactly where a bird was, what it was doing, and how it was identified.

Like many great birding spots, Shindagin Hollow is just outside of the basin,
so Melissa Groo's Red-headed Woodpecker is simply a fantastic yard bird, and
Ethan Chaffee was the first to report one in the now-traditional area along
South Mays Point Road in Tyre. There was a vague report earlier which was not
accepted by eBird.

Have a great summer. I hope to meet you out birding.

[cayugabirds-l] First bird of the year 2016

2016-01-10 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
An hour ago, when the sun broke out first, I heard the first bird of the basin.
A cardinal was singing. He sang for a minute plus! It was so nice to hear him.

Now I will go out to see what else is around in the neighborhood!

Happy 2016 to all!

[cayugabirds-l] First Sparrows

2014-11-30 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Re Jay's post: Despite the sparrows being around for a couple of weeks,
it's still very exciting for us stay-at-home birders to have them
returning to our feeders. As Jay suggested, the recent snowfall may
have forced them to seek out other food sources, e.g., feeders.
However, in my particular case I like to think that word quickly got out
among our avian friends that that nice Mr. Hymes had just liberally
sprinkled white millet seed in his yard for the first time!

[cayugabirds-l] First osprey egg at Salt Point hatches

2014-06-08 Thread Candace Cornell
Yesterday morning, after 38 days of incubation, the first osprey egg at
Salt Point hatched. I suspect there are two more eggs on the way, but it is
purely a guess. The Baltimore Orioles around the osprey platform serenaded
the new chick and it was a wonderful day at the point.

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who kept an eye out for the first
osprey egg and all the osprey nests in the basin. We are very fortunate to
have such a great generous group of birders willing to help each other.

With gratitude,
Candace

[cayugabirds-l] First blue Damselfly other firsts

2014-05-27 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
A blue Damselfly was hovering (?) next to my back door Sun. evening, my
1st of the spring.=-O :o

Becky was working in the garden when she saw a Balto. Oriole fly into
the ash tree at the end of the garden. Sharp eyes !!! found
the new nest amidst a thick clump of leaves. I fear the gray rats will
be able to get to it. We've had orioles for many yrs. here but have
never seen a nest.

The 1st box of tree swallows hatched right on schedule yesterday.:-)
Three to go.

Bluebirds pulled a fast one on the house sparrows. They found the hole
in the dead limb of an ash tree that the downy woodpeckers had used last
yr. and aren't being harassed for once.

The secretive catbird flies from one hedgerow to another, yr. after yr.,
but I never find its nest. Same with the mockingbirds. Chipping sparrows
are somewhere in the big spruce near my BR. They and a chickadee come to
glean insects from the crab apple outside my BR window.

Becky heard ospreys calling on Sun. as she worked in our garden. Sharp
eyes as well a good hearing! They were very high in the sky, flying
westward towards the lake. One left the others and came back our way.

John spotted a green heron on the mat on Mill pond last wk. as we came
from Auburn. We also continue to see the lone male redhead 2 male
mallards on Mill pond.

Gas was $3.64.9 here in Union Springs on 23 May 2014.

Have a great, short work wk.!

2014-05-17 Thread Maryfaith Miller
As I watched more and more birds arrived. At one point there were a dozen
TVs, a raven, masses of crows, a Red-Tailed Hawk and the one remaining Bald
Eagle. They were alternating dipping into the pasture where a calf was born
yesterday. The Bald Eagle flew off with the lions share of a gob of
placenta.
Just walked up to make sure it really was afterbirth, and got to watch a
male and female Bobolink up in a flowering apple tree. Three Orioles, two
Cowbirds and a Northern Kingbird rounded out a nice day of not working.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] First Broad-wings

2014-04-13 Thread Geo Kloppel
Just one day after Ken's observation, my (presumed) local Broad-winged Hawk is
back on territory. I've seen him several times today, flying low over his
traditional nest area, not far above the treetops, calling out the familiar
Pe-h? as if expecting an answer. I recently discovered what I believe
to be last year's newly-constructed nest (a previous nest that had been in use
for a number of years was damaged by a heavy spring snowfall a couple of years
ago).

I heard some nasal Crow calls this morning. Looking around, I found three
Crows, a familiar group that Pat has been feeding for months. They were close
together in a tree. One had a food item, and the other two were watching very
closely. Not sure what the social relationships are among this threesome, but I
believe one was trying a little begging.

Lots of Fox Sparrows, Towhees and Purple Finches around today. Also had
Golden-crowned Kinglet and Winter Wren, both singing. I might walk down to the
brook to hear the chorus of Hermit Thrushes this evening. Yard Woodcock
continues.

[cayugabirds-l] First Chick

2013-06-15 Thread Candace Cornell
Judging by the way the female acted today, the first osprey chick at Salt
Point probably hatched this morning. It was great fun to watch the change
in the pair's behavior. Instead of taking the fish delivered by the male to
a tree, the female stayed on the nest eating it and giving some to the
chick, I presume. (I can't see well enough in to the nest to see all the
action.) The male, who always incubated the eggs when the female left the
nest, seemed confused by the change of routine. He kept making intention
movements to get on the nest, but was thwarted by the female each time. So
instead of incubating, he spent his free time guarding the nest, which he
has not done since the early days of the nest when he was still claiming
ownership.

When the female was done with the fish, instead of flying off with the
leftover, he did something novel. The female let him stand on the platform
box and finished up the fish scraps in the nest. The next two fish
deliveries were similar with the female staying on the nest, although there
were no leftovers and he no longer attempted to incubate. I saw similar
eating behaviors in the males on the Cornell and Audubon osprey cams.

Usually young ospreys lay 2-3 eggs about 2-3 days apart and the eggs hatch
in the order they were laid. If our ospreys follow the norm, we should have
at least one more chick on Tuesday or thereabouts, and perhaps a third. The
chicks grow very quickly, so we might see little heads poking up fairly
soon.

[cayugabirds-l] First record predictions from 14 years ago...

2013-04-17 Thread Paul Anderson

All:

Back in 1999 some of the local birders who were doing the David Cup held
a survey amongst themselves to determine which birds were predicted to
show up for the first time in the basin. The top ten predictions were
the following:

10. Boreal Owl
9. Pacific Loon
8. Pomarine Jaeger
7. California Gull
6. Eurasian Collared-Dove
5. Scissor-tailed Flycatcher
4. Mississippi Kite
3. Cave Swallow
2. Great Cormorant
1. Tufted Duck

If I recall correctly, as of about this time last year 7 of the 10 had
been found. At that time neither Great Cormorant nor Tufted Duck had yet
been seen. How cool is it that both of these just showed up within a few
weeks of each other? And how cool is it that those predictions were so
spot on?

I don't remember what the one remaining species is, but I think it must
be either Boreal Owl or Pomarine Jaeger.

The newsletter that the David Cuppers maintained at that time is
archived at the CBC web site. The issue that showed the top ten is here:
http://www.cayugabirdclub.org/Resources/the-david-cup/year-5-issue-8.
There's plenty of other good stuff in there too. Enjoy!

[cayugabirds-l] First C. Loon Great Gully Eagle nest

2013-04-04 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Off former Union Springs Castelli's Marina I saw our 1st C. LOON for this
spring. I also saw the BALD EAGLE nest in a tall tree west of Great Gully Rd.
along the lake shore. Saw no bird in that nest but believe an eagle was in a
tree farther south near what appears to be another nest. Not certain about
either. There is no other place that I know of to see the nest other than
either side of the white farm house across from the state marker. I do not
recommend driving on the private roads.

Our ospreys on No. One Rd. have added a fair pile of sticks on their platform
despite the wind. I saw them both on Mon. really hunkered down, faces to the
west wind, looking miserable cold.

Saw my 1st song sparrow this a.m.. Female N. FLICKER was at the suet again.
Nice to see the kestral near Half Acre.

My FOS Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in the yard on Sunday. The two Red-bellied
Woodpeckers quickly chased it away to the neighbors.

[cayugabirds-l] First-year male Redwing Blackbird

2010-12-28 Thread Stephanie Greenwood

Well that was a surprise!
A male Redwing Blackbird just appeared at my sunflower feeder. I first
thought it was a female, but it was in what my Sibley notes as a male in
its 1st-summer plumage. There's probably a more scientifically
bird-speak word for that. But anyway I was very surprised to see it.
