RE: Slightly OT: Lighten things up a little

2000-05-14 Thread Steve Robson

I think if you watch the road instead of your monitor, you'll have more
luck.

BTW - where do you put your monitor, I tried putting it in front of the
steering wheel, but it was too close, then I tried on top of the dash but it
was too far away, I was thinking about putting it on the passanger seat and
putting the girlfriend in the back, or get her to drive while I sit in the
back and continue to code.

It would be interesting to hear what others are doing to reduce the amount
of wasted, non-coding time.

Cheers

Steve

Ouch, but 911's have to be one of the coolest cars our there in my opinion
:-)

After flipping a jeep Cherokee last year, getting in a three car pileup with
my probe, and getting two tickets all in one year...I ended up getting a 97
BMW z3...sometimes I think that staring at the monitor too long impairs my
judgment :-D

It's nice to see a little life in the list and no one whining about it...

Actually it's a Big red 95 Cougar XR7.

After having seen a 911 UNDER a Sedan DeVille I will never drive a small

Since we're off the subject, I think it would be cool to have a site with
some sort of profile for each CF-Talk member. A short bio, maybe link to a
resume, and a picture. Then we could put faces to the names. I mean, is
Dave

drive a little red convertable Miata? Does Fred Sanders *really* wear a
cowboy hat and spurs? Ahhh, if only I had more time!!

Custom tags

2000-05-14 Thread David Cummins

Hi everybody

I just started reading up about custom tags, and I was wondering a few
things about them.

Firstly, are things like cfsetting scoped in any way? For example, if I
turn debugging off in a custom tag, does it affect the calling tag?

Secondly, I believe you can only pass one query to a custom tag. Is
there a reason for this? I would have assumed that a query is just
another data structure which can be passed around. After all, in most
cases you can treat it like a plain old variable, i.e. .

And lastly, does a custom tag share the session, client and application
scopes with the caller? If not, can you write something like ?

TIA

David

RE: Hi

2000-05-14 Thread Steve Minton

The reasons that I decided to turn to CF are:

1)While ASP is great for complex programming tasks, it is awkward and
unwieldy for simple tasks such as merely presenting data from a database.

2)Whilst considering CF, I also took a brief look at PHP3, although I
found that this would not be suitable for my needs, as its integration with
MySQL is too complex. I also primarily work on a Windows based platform and
therefore preferthe ODBC support offered by this system.

3)Finally, CF actually looks *fun* to use! It has a good structured
development environment (CF Studio) which is where ASP sorely falls short -
although there are rumours that MM Ultradev will go some way to resolving
this.

Re: Hi

2000-05-14 Thread Jake Hileman

Boom! That's exactly why I switched... right now I'm looking for a good
resource. ASP has activerserverpages.com, aspin.com etc.. cold fusion falls
short in that area. And cold fusion eats up 10x the memory that ASP did. I
haven't even really run any programs except the sample ones and the
cfserver.exe was using 30 megs of ram on nt2k. My inetinfo which is running
asp apps while we speak was only using 7 megs. :-( That really stinks.
Anyhow I'm looking for some resources and a good, free or inexpensive
shopping cart.. one like www.ihtmlmerchant.com .. something comparable to
that!

Thanks,

Jake

If you're using CF 4.5.1, though, you will see the high memory usage
mentioned by Jake. 4.5 handles memory differently than previous versions.
For memory management, CF uses a third-party product called SmartHeap. In
4.5.x, SmartHeap doesn't release any memory back to the operating system as
it did in earlier versions.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. The reason 4.5.x does this is to
eliminate the performance cost of releasing and reacquiring memory,
following the assumption that it will probably need the memory in the
future. CF isn't designed to share a server with other applications. As long
as you don't have any memory leaks in external components, including
database drivers, you shouldn't have any problems. If you do have memory
leaks, though, you'll end up cycling your server more than you'd like if you
run 4.5.x.

Is this a valid SQL query?

2000-05-14 Thread WL

Hi,

Is this OK for a SQL query? The 2 tables in question are categories and
sub_categories. Everything seems ok, but it's not working..

Select categories.ID, categories.cat_name, sub_categories.sub_id,
sub_categories.sub_name, sub_categories.sub_descript

 FROM categories,sub_categories

  WHERE sub_categories.cat_id = categories.ID

Thanks,

Will

Will Allaire be refunding people who paid for Forums? One of our clients,
who paid the full price of around AUD$750.00 (around US$434) not too long
ago, is bound to find out that it is now open source.

Cheers!

Re: Hi

Dave / Jake -

Just checked the mem usage on my cf server - over 80 megs! Whoa. That's
never good. Of course, that was in a shared hosting environment, so people
are probably running all sorts of junk code. After restarting the CF
services, mem usage droped down to 16 megs.

Oh yah - that was on Win 2000 / CF 4.5 Pro

Looks like I'll be restarting cfserver more often ;-).

Re: #lots_of_stuff$

2000-05-14 Thread Howie Hamlin

I think you will find that the difference (if any) is negligible. The
reason is that ColdFusion has to parse the entire contents of the template
whether you have a comment block, cfoutput block, or whatever. There is no
way that an interpretive parser would not have to parse every character in a
template file.

Where you can get a savings of sorts is by setting your template to enable
only cfoutput blocks so that all of the extra white space is not sent to the
browser - this will lower bandwidh usage and browser rendering time.

It's not necessarily bad. As long as CF 4.5.x's memory usage reaches a
stable ceiling, even if it's over 80 Mb, that's OK. You might want to let it
go for a while to see if you have any memory leaks; if you don't, then the
memory usage itself doesn't matter. In a shared hosting environment, though,
you are more likely to encounter memory leaks in database drivers, I
suppose, since who knows what's being used. You might want to read this:

Re: Is this a valid SQL query?

2000-05-14 Thread Dick Applebaum

Looks OK... by not working, I assume you mean that you get no results returned.

You might add:

sub_categories.cat_id

to your SELECT clause and remove the WHERE clause...

You will see what the actual data is (could be a lot of data).

Jake,

It's gotta be something in your setup. We use CF for some very processor
intensive apps, and we NEVER reach anywhere near
that kind of RAM usage. The most I've ever seen the meter hit was about
18meg - and I had the thing caught in a loop. (NT4.0 SP5 running CF
Enterprise 4.01). I think you'll find CF quite capable of running the
"complex" tasks mentioned by Steve as well as ASP.

I've tried several CSS editors, found TopStyle to be the best. I think it's
well worth investing in the full version of Topstyle -- there's a lot more

I've used NetObjects ScriptBuilder. I like some features, but I have to say
on the whole that there's less there than meets the eye. The same goes and
moreso for Cream Software's Scribbler. I *wish* I could find a great
JavaScript editor. For now I find slogging scripts out in Studio or a basic

RE: Slightly OT: Lighten things up a little

2000-05-14 Thread Duane Boudreau

Alternative 1:
Why not try the heads up display that some of the luxury cars on the market
offer today. Enlarge the display to cover the entire windshield and combine
it with a steering wheel that has a keyboard built where the horn switch
goes (who needs a horn there anyway) or dragonfly voice recognition
software.

(h... wonder if my wife will ok a trip to the local car dealership :)

Alternative 2
I went to a videoconferencing (past life :) show in in Boston and one of the
customers of the company I worked for, had mounted a 15in monitor for
videoconferencing in the customized dash board of a mid 60's (?) corvette.
Combine that with the keyboard or voice recognition above.

This way your girlfriend can still sit in the front seat and you can still
code :)

recognition)

I think if you watch the road instead of your monitor, you'll have more
luck.

BTW - where do you put your monitor, I tried putting it in front of the
steering wheel, but it was too close, then I tried on top of the dash but it
was too far away, I was thinking about putting it on the passanger seat and
putting the girlfriend in the back, or get her to drive while I sit in the
back and continue to code.

It would be interesting to hear what others are doing to reduce the amount
of wasted, non-coding time.

That's a different problem. Versions before CF 4.5.1 would install MDAC 2.1
on Win2K, even though it has MDAC 2.5 already.

Re: Joining Two Text Fields?

2000-05-14 Thread John Allred

Marco,

I do this with one of my sites (combining fields to construct a URL),
and it works fine.

I think, possibly, including the "?ID=" in the field may be the culprit.
Try removing these characters from the field, then construct the URL as
follows:

It's been a while since I struggled with getting it to work on my site,
but as I recall, I had problems with ".cfm" being in the field that
corresponds to your "#NewDeals.CouponURL#". When I removed the ".cfm"
from the field and placed it outside the pounds, like:
, everything
worked. If you have other file types, this might require some
conditional logic to accomplish. At the time, I didn't try
URLEncodedValue on the field. This might work, too.

yeah. It just keeps on loading, but nothing happens. Could this be because
I'm running CF Express? I haven't yet experienced a problem like this -
usually I'm at fault(!) and it tells me so, or it says CFXpress doesn't
support this function. But with this, it just doesn't do anything.

Any ideas?

In the above examples, there are two opposing costs. There's a cost to
processing each character within a CFOUTPUT, as is being done in example 1,
and there's a cost to each individual CFOUTPUT tag, as in example 2. There
isn't any algorithm for determining which of the above would be more
efficient; you'll have to determine that on a case-by-case basis, and
balance performance against readability as well.

I totally agree with the nice drive in the country, that's half the reason I
bought it. Most of you are lucky cause you can get away from work for the
most part. I live in a 11*15 dorm room with another person so unless I'm
out to eat, or rarely attending a class :-), my clients can get to me.

The car is relaxing but as you say, looking at those lug nuts does tend to
perk you up a bit. hehe

ride in the country in my Miata sure clears my head after a long day at
the screen. BTW, staring eye-level at the lug nuts on truck wheels at
red lights tends to make one a more defensive driver!

Re: displays the textboxes dynamically

2000-05-14 Thread Joseph Eugene

You could make the use choose , how many textboxes they want frrom a down
list or so in another form and pass the variable to a cfloop, which has the
form.

Re: HELP to Browse CF locally without an internet connection ???

2000-05-14 Thread Chris Carpenter

Hi Claude,

In go to
tools > internet options > connections > lan settings
then, under advanced options, there should be a box that says : "...do not
use proxy server for addresses beginning with... " in that box put your ip
address : 127.0.0.1 and that should fix it..

Hope this Helps

Memory Hog!

2000-05-14 Thread Jake Hileman

Just checked it again, right now without me even running any CF
applications, cfserver.exe has reached 38,780k of RAM. I'm using Windows NT
2000. Also, I'm having the same problem with SQL Server.. I'm barely using
it, and it hit 70 megs of ram. Hmmm, inetinfo.exe and everything else stays
under 10 or so. Actually homesite.exe sometimes hits 30 megs of ram...
think there is a memory problem in win2k?

Let me know,

Jake

More information would be nice, like what kind of webserver
your running on the box (i.e PWS, IIS, Apache, etc). Did
you check to see if it was running, little things like that
make helping you easier for us to do.

It has a good structured
development environment (CF Studio) which is where ASP sorely falls short -
although there are rumours that MM Ultradev will go some way to resolving
this.

"CFX_ChangePass" for changing NT user passwords?

The previous developers of a site we're working on used it, and they
aren't being very helpful...
