| Ok let me say first that I LOVE COLDFUSION and i've used it for 4 years
| now.
|
| but i will say that i'm starting to become disilliusioned (sp) by the
| service i've recieved
| from allaire, it seems like everytime i try to buy one of there
| products not
| only do i have to wait on hold for 20-50 minutes but i get crappy help, i
| tell the sales guy want i want and he tells me what HE wants me
|to buy and
| since i tell him no i dont want to buy 7 Licenses right now and spend
| 30,000, and the words where not right now, i would have bought them from
| this guy Mark B. in a few months but he said OH no i want them by
| the end of
| this month. And i had to just stop and say WAIT a second,
| you are the Sales guy i am the customer that wants to give you
| money. I know
| to him 5000 is not alot of cash but we're going to have to spend
| upwards of
| 30,000 in licenses eventually and he does not think that is good
| enough. So
| he sends me a quote and then i answer via email saying OK we're
|just going
| to do 1 copy of CF ENT for Linux and i mean he was so unhelpfull
| he did not
| answer his email for several hours he was upset i asked for the fax # he
| told me wrong ifnormation just to shut me up because we called 5 minutes
| after his hours ended so he did not want to help.
|
| Now i'm a very easy going guy but when a person that is supposed to be
| working for a company to ENHANCE its reputation and marketshare by
| developing a special sense of loyalty. By making the customer
| feel that you
| actually give a damn about him and are not just in this for your
| commission
| check. I know people are trying to make a living but dont do it at the
| expense of making your customers feel like you dont have enough
| time in the
| day for them.
|
| Luckily enough John with Customer Relations really saved the day by being
| helpful, understanding and actually taking a damn minute to listen to my
| problems and make me feel like i was important.
| So possibly the problem with allaires stock is that people are
|getting the
| same trouble that i am.
| And one thing i would recommend allaire to do is get MORE people
|to answer
| the darn phone so you dont have to sit on hold forever, but if
|you cant do
| that at least get sales people that dont make me feel like crap.
|We may be
| no microsoft or IBM, but we've referred our fair share of people
|to use CF
| and we've given our fair share of money to Allaire when they
|were nobodies
| still making CGI code, and for that type of loyalty they have hired sales
| people that dont make us feel like we mean anything to them.

Or go into your server settings go to debug and set the:

by all the individual pages that were used to compose the final page. (You
must restart ColdFusion Server in order for changes to this setting to take
effect.)

Putting the !-- file name -- could be considered a security risk. stick to

PS Both ASP ColdFusion can do the job (if both

Re: CF friendly URL Major Search Engine Design.

2000-09-23 Thread paul smith

It's not a CF drawback as much as it's a dynamic page drawback,
whether you use CF, cgi, asp, perl, or whatever.

That is, one problem is that as soon as a search engine sees the
"?" in the following: index.cfm?ID=234 it assumes ID can have
many values and stops. There are workarounds, one article
mentioned here recently is:

RE: ASP or Coldfusion?

2000-09-23 Thread paul smith

I have a similar situation except it takes 20+ minutes (and counting) to
load the database into structures. But that doesn't have much to do with
ASP vs CF.

It's just the consequences of a design decision to spend time starting up
so you can save time when CF is running. (Reminds me of Porche's
philosophy years ago. You couldn't fault Porches for not accelerating very
fast from a standstill, because the Porche design philosophy was not to
waste resources on something you used only once in a race. Reliability
was more important to them.)

RE: Crazy idea? (topical, but not programming)

2000-09-23 Thread Rick Osborne \(Mojo\)

Allaire gets how many thousand dollars per copy of CF? Do we *really* think
they're going to GPL (or even just OpenSource) it any time soon? I'm naive,
but I'm not *that* naive. :)

I've often pondered the feasibility of writing a "FreeCF" of some sort.
(More and more lately, actually.) Of course, I have no doubt that it would
be vastly inferior to the real thing. But then, that's not the point, is
it? I've got the SourceForge account, I've got the compiler, and I've
certainly got the motivation. My ODBC, ISAPI, and Apache mod_ skillz aren't
where they were, but I'm sure I could get back up there. Now all I need is
the free time. :)

But, actually, you know what my numero uno motivation for writing FreeCF
would be? I want a CF interpreter object library that I can embed in my
applications without a web server. (Yes, yes, I know, I've thought about
it, you'd still have to emulate a CGI environment, I know.) You've seen how
many posts we get on "CF on a CD" and all that rot. I've thought about it,
as I'm sure have most others on the list. I would *kill* for that
functionality.

That, and in a more selfish vein, think about the recognition for doing
something like that. Allaire would sent out the men in the black sedans,
but everyone else would buy you lots of free beer. (Or your favorite
non-alcoholoic equivalent.) shiver Gives my ego the willies just
thinkin' about it. :)

Okay, that's my non-programming post for the month. I'll get back to work
now.

RE: performance white papers

2000-09-23 Thread Richard Colman

Seems to me that most of the cost of developing, operating and maintaining
applications is in labor -- not cost of the software. Consider that most CF
apps go up two to three time faster than ASP (in terms of man-hours and
calendar time) -- making $1,000 for CF is trivial for any medium to large
size project.

The math is left as an exercise for the student ...

Thanks Doug

I have run into the dreaded questions that clients ask, "Why should we pay
for CF when we can get ASP for free."

They want hard numbers to justify CF over ASP in terms of performance.

You need to use javascript.

Try this:

a href="#" onClick="document.formname.submit();"Click here to submit the
form/a

Note that you must give the form a name for this to work, like this:

form name="formname" action="results.cfm" method="post"
input type="hidden" value="value" name="formvalue"
/form

Make sure the name of the form in your javascript matches the actual form
name. Names are case-sensitive.

Hello all...I am perplexed...hope you can help. I have a basic form on
my site that allows you to view retailers by state. If the state does
not have any retailers, a sentence to that effect is displayed,
otherwise, the retailers are listed with name, address, phone, etc...
The problem I am having is that this works fine with AOL and IE, but in
Netscape Communicator, if one of the states with no retailers is chosen,
NOTHING is displayed - not even the header and other page assets. If one
of the states with retailers is chosen, it displays just fine. When I
look at the results page (for a state with no retailers), the HTML looks
as it should. Why isn't this displaying for me The form page is
http://www.yorkshirehouse.cc/preview/retailer.cfm . (A state with no
retailers is Alaska or Hawaii) Any insight you could provide would be
greatly appreciated.

If I understand the problem correctly, I've seen this before.
Netscape does this when there's an error in the HTML. Run
it through websitegarage or something.

RE: Irregular/*NO* display of results in NN???

2000-09-23 Thread Mark Warrick

It appears that your problem is HTML-related - specifically, you don't have a closing
table tag.

IE and AOL (which is basically IE) are more lenient on HTML coding errors.

Next time a weird thing like this comes up, run the resulting HTML through an HTML
code validator before banging your head against the wall trying to figure it out.
(ColdFusion studio has a validator built in - just copy and paste the HTML from your
browsers "View Source" over to a new document and run the validator against it.)

And by the way, why are you displaying states in the display list which you KNOW don't
have retail outlets in them?

This subject has come up many times on the Fusebox list. I'd suggest you look through

RE: CFPOP's MessageNumber

2000-09-23 Thread Owen Leonard

I'm looking for the answer to the very same question. I'd like people
to be able to check their messages via the web, but also have access to
them from other mail clients. My solution was to copy their mail
messages to a database, but then I run into the problem of CFPOP not
knowing which messages on the server have already been downloaded.
I wondered if it would be simpler to just download all the messages
again, and then run some kind of comparison to look for duplicates in
the table. But that sounds kinda time-consuming.
I know that mail programs like Outlook and Netscape leave a file on
your mail server that acts as a kind of placeholder so they know where
they left off. I wonder if a combination of CFPOP and CFMAIL could do
the same thing?

If I do a CFPOP with ACTION="GetAll" and then later do an
ACTION="Delete", how does CF keep track of which message I'm referring
to? What if in the meantime another process had deleted one
 or more of
the messages returned in the original call to CFPOP - will message #10
still be the message I thought it was? I suspect it will
 simply be the
10th message returned by the mail server whenever the delete action is
run and the wrong one message would be deleted from the server.

A variation on this, which is what I'm trying to do: I'd
 like to have a
CF program, using CFPOP, retrieve messages from a mailbox,
 _not_ delete
the messages, then in subsequent runs, retrieve only new messages
(similar to the way an email client might operate)? I understand the
STARTROW attribute, but once again, it doesn't seem to
 address starting
at a specific message, simply at the Nth message. What if
 messages had
been deleted since the last program execution - won't that throw this
STARTROW point off? Is there any other way of identifying a specific
message and saying "retrieve every message after this one"?

 Thanks,
 Jim

RE: preventing overbooking of classes

2000-09-23 Thread Mark Warrick

This sounds like a good candidate for CFGRID and a combination of JavaScript and DHTML.

The person telling you what to do needs to understand that the web is a "stateless"
environment - which she/he apparently does not understand yet. You can't just change
things on the fly and have them update on the screen with straight HTML or without a
return trip back to the server (via form posting).

But with some VERY creative client side scripting, I think you can probably get the
job done. Look at Microsoft's site for more tips on this type of scripting and some
DHTML and JavaScript sites as well.

 Hi James!

 Thanks for your response.

Well, yes...I could have the coordinator edit one record at a time as you

 but what
we really wanted was a very convenient interface so that the coordinator

her changes, I don't want that form to refresh--I want her to be able to
quickly see which fields she had changed previously. Make sense?

My boss (all hail the guru programmer ;) suggested that I pass a
 hidden form
field from the form that contains the original value of the registration
status for each record. That way, the original value is passed to
 the action
page, AS WELL AS the updated value from the dropdown box. Then I
 can compare
the two fields for each record on my action page before any
 updates occur.
I'm going to give this a try. Stay tuned all, as dealing with these loops
sometimes throws me for a loop :)))

 Thanks, James!

 Heya, Terri,

OK, admitted CF_Novice coming out of normal lurk mode, but heck, here's
what comes to mind. You may have already thought of this but want to do
 it differently, but...

What about setting the coordinator's registration process to be able to
only approve 1 student at a time? That way, while in the registration
admin page, you can display the list of those waiting for approval, plus
the number of available slots. The coordinator approves a person, and you
give the standard " Mr.X Approved for class Y / approve another person /
back to admin main page" type page in return. And when the coordinator
says "yeah, I'll approve that other guy" you'll be pulling up your
refreshed counts, and if there are no available slots in the class, you
can show the appropriate "class full" message, and the person will not be
*able* to register more students than class slots.

Of course, the downside is if you're working with large classes, or a lot
 of students. ;

Is this something resembling what you want to do?

 Hope this helps,
 James~

Sorry. It is illegal US citizens to discuss our rates in an open forum like this.

Heya All,

Anyone know of a way to have a link submit a form, insead of using an input
tag? I'm relatively new to the tag based world of programming, and don't
know if this is possible.

Thanks.

RE: Decrypt cold fusion files

2000-09-23 Thread Mark Warrick

N

NOO!!

I think it would generally be illegal to decrypt templates unless of course it's your
own work, in which case you can have Allaire decrypt them for you.

Or you can find the CFDECRYPT program. Sorry no hints available for that solution.

RE: Template not found. Which template?

2000-09-23 Thread Mark Warrick

The "security risk" Adam pointed out is true, however you should be securing your
sub-templates anyway and thus the supposed security risk would be a moot point.

This is another reason why you SHOULD use the fusebox model. You can secure all your
sub-templates with the following code which you would place in your application.cfm
file (oh God, I can hear it now from the Fusebox zealots (don't use an application
file!!!))

Anyway, despite what the specs say, this works to secure your sub-templates in the
Fusebox model:

cfif script_name does not contain "index.cfm"

cfabort

/cfif

You could AND SHOULD secure NON-Fusebox sub-templates with something like the
following:

cfif http_referrer does not contain "#server_name#"

cfabort

/cfif

Why isn't this displaying for me The form page is

retailers is Alaska or Hawaii) Any insight you could provide would be
 greatly appreciated.

 | you are the Sales guy i am the customer that wants to give you

 | to him 5000 is not alot of cash but we're going to have to spend

he

 |
 | Luckily enough John with Customer Relations really saved the day by

 | So possibly the problem with allaires stock is that people are

CFEXEC (in CF4.5) will let you execute an application and grab the
results.

Hello Everyone.
Please help me I am stuck.
I have to make a search on the basis of model number
which is present in Access database.
If I write model number suppose"ABC" or "AB"

That means while searching the alphabets should be
truncated automatically.

Re: Irregular/*NO* display of results in NN???

2000-09-23 Thread Terry Stewart

Hello Adrienne,

Netscape is very picky about tables being correct. I just looked at your
output, and if the state does not have any records your table does not
complete

START The bottom of your output ***
TR
TD ROWSPAN=1 COLSPAN=1 WIDTH=4 HEIGHT=431nbsp; /TD
TD ROWSPAN=1 COLSPAN=1 WIDTH=3 HEIGHT=431 valign="top"nbsp; /TD
TD ROWSPAN=1 COLSPAN=1 WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=431nbsp; /TD
TD ROWSPAN=1 COLSPAN=1 WIDTH=590 HEIGHT=431 valign="top" br
  table width="100%"
tr valign="top"
  td height="234"br
br
img src="arnu.gif" width="272" height="20" br
br

font size="2" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"
There are currently no authorized Yorkshire House retailers in
Oklahoma.
Please contact a Yorkshire House retailer in a neighboring
state. br
br
a href="retailer.cfm"bClick here to select another state/b/a/font
END The bottom of your output ***

You need to complete/close out the table tr and td tags.

Thank you,
A. Cregar

I just want to thank Mr. Dinowitz. I used your study rules for my cram
session last night. I passed the exam with a score of 90%.

 Thanks -John-

If this wasn't the last night, I'd give you the study rules that I gave
the
 developers over here at CA.

TO ANYONE WHO HAS TAKEN THE CF EXAM:

Tonight is the last night I can study for the Allaire CF certification
exam. Is there any area that you recommend I concentrate on tonight?

   THANKS!
