ColdFusion progress meters

2001-06-03 Thread Peter Tilbrook

Thanks to Ray Camden for the article in the CF DevExchange on progress
meters in CF!

I've already implemented one for generating a PDF file (online will) and it
works really well!

Cheers!

   However, that won't work if the registry access is disabled. I believe
the program-tag is actually CFSCHEDULE (?). It's not in my printed

Ah.. well it would be great to hear how it was done on Apache. I assume we

Noticed that 2.0 of Apache doesn't have any binaries for the latest beta.

RE: Your site's easy to navigate? You Think so?

2001-06-03 Thread Mike Brunt

Michael, put simply this a very important and illuminating email. I, like
many people, am fortunate enough to have my sight. As we are all consumed
in the day to day rigors of surviving in difficult times it is easy to
ignore deviations like making sure those without sight can get around on the
web. Even if it costs time and money to do this, I personally believe those
who take the time to care will find reward.

Subject: Your site's easy to navigate? You Think so?

I have just come out of a most enlightening session with a blind user,
running though a client's web site with JAWS, a screen reading program
that turns the web page into synthesised voice.

I thought I was quite aware of accessibility issues before, and was
comfortable in thinking that my sites were better than the average in
providing access to the blind and people with other disabilities. This
session was educational to say the least.

I am still convinced my sites are better than average, but I am bound to
inform you that the average is pretty damn poor. I know some people
are
really concerned about accessibility for the disabled and others have
decided that the disabled are such a small portion of their userbase,
it's
not worth changing everything to allow for them.

I'm here to tell you that it's not difficult to design a good site to
allow for access, it just takes a little understanding of how programs
like JAWS works. To be truthful, I think that if I were blind, I'd go
stark raving mad at all the frustrations of life but trying to surf the
web wouldn't make life any easier that's for sure.

For example, he took us through a page of our bookshop. And we'd
arranged things to look nice on the page, but there were parts of the
catalogue page where he didn't know what the "add to basket" graphic was
referring to - this book or the previous one. And some nested tables
were simply awful and impossible to work round.We all think putting
navigation buttons on the top of every page makes for easy navigation,
but
blind people have to wade through (in our case) 50 navigation links
before
getting to the guts of the page. On a search of our site, the resulting
page has a nice header at the top with links to all our site's
catgegories
and sub-categories and then a sidebar with links to other parts of the
site, and finally the search results itself. Visually it looks fine -
quick and simple to move around the site. But using the screen reading
software it took **AGES** to get to anything related to the search. By
just laying out the page differently, we could have made this page FAR
easier to navigate for him.

I'm not suggesting we should all go about redesigning our sites just for
the relatively few blind users, but just understanding how the software
works, has made me re-think many of the forms I build. The user also
said that Government sites tended to be the worst of all. I'm not sure
if
that's because they're designed by developers with an eye on the
government money or because they are specified by bureaucrats.
Certainly
of all the sites that ought to know about accessibility, Government
sites
ought to be the leaders, and apparently they aren't.

I think as web developers, you'd all be doing A Good Thing if you
arranged
for a meeting like we just had at Australian Consumers Association -
have
a blind person come and work your site for you using their screen
reading
software. At the risk of being accused of making an off-colour joke,
it's
a real eye-opener.

No, I don't think so. All CFFLUSH does is signal that part of the HTTP
response body can be returned, before the rest has been generated. The
problem with CFCOOKIE and CFLOCATION is simply that CF doesn't allow the use
of both tags, which affect the HTTP response header, in a single script.

As has been discussed on this list occasionally in the past, there's no
inherent limitation in the HTTP RFC about using headers to simultaneously
set a cookie and specify a new location - CF just doesn't let you do this,
if I recall correctly.

I haven't used the M3Gate emulator, but if you use the openwave.com
(formerly phone.com) emulator, it'll display the HTTP response data in a
command shell, which will show you the error message in most cases.

The only way you can make this happen is to have the first CGI script return
the results of its HTTP post request. You'll have to rewrite this CGI script
if it doesn't do this already.

I don't think anyone answered the question with regard to IIS - it was an
Apache question.

You can't run multiple instances on IIS on a single server. However, you can
run multiple virtual servers within IIS, and each can have its own ISAPI
configuration. You can get the same effect doing this as the original writer
mentioned using Apache.

With either IIS or Apache - or any other web server - all instances or
virtual servers can use the same CF service, as long as they're configured
to do so.

Re: Server-to-Server FTP

2001-06-03 Thread Paul Smith

You can use Remote Administrator to do this (at least manually)
http://www.famatech.com/

You install RA on both remote servers. (Much faster than pcA or VNC!)

You login to one of your remote servers (in Full Control Mode), call it
Server A. You then remotely start a Client RA session on Server A (in File
Transfer Mode). You then drag and drop files from Server A to Server B.

(Now if I could find a California ISP that supported Multilink 56K, I'd
dump DSL and go to co-lo, RA, and 2 56K modems)

best,  paul

Yes, they don't permit any use of the CFSchedule tag. Or anything else

I'm getting a series of errors while attempting to use the Macromedia Flash
Component Kit (Harpoon). First, when trying to view the samples, I got
"Error resolving parameter REQUEST.UITOOLKITPATH", then after attempting to
fix the error by adding "REQUEST.UITOOLKITPATH" the into the application.cfm
file I got a series of template not found errors. It looks like a CF
mapping needs to be added to the kit in order for it to work as well, though
that is not mentioned in the readme file.

Before going on with re-downloading or further attempting to fix the
apparent errors in the kit's code, has anyone else expereinced this?
Perhaps I'm missing something obvious? Any suggestions?

Re: problems with cfschedule and cfftp

2001-06-03 Thread Jim McAtee

Are you sure that cfschedule is operational? This could be disabled by the
server administrators. Just ask them. If cfschedule is operating, see if
they'll check within the CF Administrator for you to see if your task was
successfully scheduled.

The only other thing I'd add is that I've had (slightly) more luck with
cfschedule when using military time (24 hour clock), rather than using
AM/PM. Specifying an end date and time - years into the future, if
desired - sometimes also helps.

Re: Alternative to CFSchedule?

2001-06-03 Thread Jim McAtee

Do you have access to any machine that you can be sure will be running and
online 24x7? You can call your cf template via http (this is what
CFSchedule does) using a variety of languages or scripted commands.

Another way: This depends a little on how long the 'daily check' template
takes to execute. If it's reasonably quick, this should work. You can keep
an application variable, or maybe a very small table with a single record
that contains nothing more that the date that you last ran your daily
script. Either place within the templates that modify data, or else in
application.cfm, a quick check of this date value to see if the daily script
has been run today. If the date is yesterday, run the daily template and
set the new date. The reason the daily template can't take too long in
executing is that it will have to complete it's job before any other
processing starts from the template that launched it. At worst, one user
per day will have to wait a bit longer for a single page response. Of
course, you can't be sure exactly when the template will fire, unless you
have a very busy site.

When you say they don't allow it, do you mean they actually don't
allow it, or they just won't set it up for you in cf administration?
Because there is a way to create a schedule yourself with a template.

There was a problem with the documentation being incorrect for cfgraph
during the betas. If you are still working with a beta, that may be the
problem...
I dont think the majority of us have CF5 final yet though. IIRC it is

Re: Server-to-Server FTP

2001-06-03 Thread Tony Schreiber

There's a name for that, it might be called Remote Transfer. The data does
not go through your computer. Very useful for moving big files from one
server to another when you're on a dialup. ;p The client fakes the
connection to each computer so they think they're talking to each other
essentially. I'm sure you could do it with command line utility on Linux,
but I don't know of anything for Win32. Except doesn't WS-FTP support
that? And doesn't it have a scripting tool?

Alternative to CFSchedule?

2001-06-03 Thread Michael Kear

I have a CF Hosting service that doesn't allow CF Schedule and I want a
site to run a daily check on itself and report to me if any of my users
have added links, changed details, etc on any of my pages so I can go and
check they're all Ok.

The only alternative I've thought of so far is to have a CFSchedule
running on my own development machine that calls the template on this
site.

Does anyone have a better idea for achieving the same thing? There is a
potential problem with having a production template running regularly on a
development server, since there's no guarantee it's going to be up and
going at the time the job's supposed to be run.

Re: schedule/postpone a CFMAIL

2001-06-03 Thread Jim McAtee

Save any data that will be included in the body of the email to a
database and programmatically schedule a template to run 30 minutes
later. Use CFSchedule or your favorite scheduling service. When that
template runs, mark the data as 'sent' (or delete it) and remove the
task from the schedule.

If you've got a lot of these, just permanently schedule a template to
run every minute (or every five minutes if this is sufficient). That
template checks the database for records that are at least 30 minutes
old and which haven't been 'sent'. It can then send out multiple
messages. You end up running fewer templates this way and don't have to
worry about programmatically scheduling every message.

I need to send an email 30 minutes after it was issued.

Thanks,

Site to Site Transfers (FXP)

2001-06-03 Thread Eric Root

I checked into CuteFTP Help file. Here is what it said (below). Note
that CuteFTP allows you to automate and script tasks, so depending upon
your situation, you might be able to automate it that way. Another
thing that might help you is to perform it in cute and capture the
commands that cute executes (in case you find a COM object and need the
commands). CuteFTP displays and logs those commands. It would be
interesting to see if CuteFTP is available as a COM object.
Eric Root
**

CuteFTP is capable of transfering files from one remote server to
another. This is commonly known as an FXP transfer. Some servers do not
allow this style of transfer; if you're having difficulty getting this
feature to function properly please contact the administrator of the FTP
site to see if FXP is supported.

1 Connect to the first remote site using either Site Manager or Quick
Connect.

2 Spawn a session or run CuteFTP from the Start Menu again.

3 Connect to the second remote site in the spawned session.

4 Drag & Drop the file you wish to transfer from the remote window in
the first session to the remote window in the second session.

Re: cfhttp/cffile locking?

2001-06-03 Thread Michael Lugassy

Let me see if I got this figured out:

About CFFILE:
You're saying that if I read lots of times from the file and just doing
one update (daily, off-hours) I just need to exclusive lock this one cffile
write once?
no lock around cffile read? or include that uses the same file?
you see - I'm generating once a day a designed html page with the latest
news flashes.
this page is included in alot of my other pages in the site.
but it is only updated by a single process that I scheduled through
CF-Admin.

About CFHTTP:
I'm not writing CFHTTP into file directly. most of the times I'm checking to
see
wheter the information in Cfhttp.filecontent is the info I need and then I
put it
into file using CFFILE write, do I still need to lock it up?
again, only CF-Admin (via schedule) runs the cfhttp requests, but there are
at least 10 requests per template, and about 3 templates that may run
simulatniously.

thanks for answering!

If you're reading from a file, which is never going to be updated,
written to, or otherwise manipulated, then you do not need to lock a
cffile.

If other pages in your application, or other applications on your
server write to the file, then you *do* need to lock the cffile, (for
both the read and write).

You need to lock the cfhttp if it's saving the retrieved page into a
file.

If you don't lock file access, you can have two pages trying to update
the same file at the same time, this *may* cause problems.

>From the help file:

file updates do not fail due to files being open for writing by other
applications or ColdFusion tags.

I would assume that you should the server scope, and chances are
you'll want your type set to exclusive, even if you're just reading
from the file.

Hope this helps,

Dan.

Re: REFindnocase - Parsing URL's (spidering)

2001-06-03 Thread Dain Anderson

Jon,

Here is some code I've used in the past to parse/spider URL's (using CFHTTP,
but you can use whatever means you want).

http://www.allaire.com/";>

/* Set a Boolean flag for exiting our loop. */
Exit = false;

/* Starting position for our search. */
Start = 1;

/* Set a pointer to our CFHTTP.FileContent data. */
Page = CFHTTP.FileContent;

/* Build a table for output. */
WriteOutput("HREFText");

/* Loop through our data in search of hyperlinks. */
while(NOT Exit) {

/* Match any occurence of a URL. */
  Match = REFindNoCase(

"([[:print:]]
+)", Page, Start, TRUE);

/* If a URL is found. */
  if (Match.pos[1]) {

/* Get the destination of the hyperlink. */
  HREF = Mid(Page, Match.pos[2], Match.len[2]);

/* Get the text description of the hyperlink. */
  Text = Mid(Page, Match.pos[3], Match.len[3]);

/* Output the results in a new table row. */
  WriteOutput("#HREF##Text#");

/* Increment the starting position for the next match. */
  Start = Match.pos[1] + Match.len[1];

/* If no more matches are found, exit the loop. */
   } else Exit = true;
}

/* Finish the table by closing it. */
WriteOutput("");

Bizarre Browser Problem

2001-06-03 Thread Rich Z

I'm using a CF web hosting service and I'm getting an absolutely bizarre
scenario:

When I open the CF pages on my PC at home, they come into the browser with
all the CF code intact (i.e. unprocessed). I thought this was an issue at
the host, but it turns out if I surf anywhere else, it works fine. Any
suggestions/help?

Thanks,
Rich

Re: cfhttp/cffile locking?

2001-06-03 Thread Kei Muryobayashi

Good Morning, Michael

You do not need to lock cfhttp or cffile if they don't handle shared data
or the data are not written or read by others during the transaction.

Well, for most of cases, you have to lock around these functions... :(

As for CFXs, if they are not multithread safe, you need to lock them.

I use CFX_Make_Tree for my company's forum application. As it is
said to be multithread safe, I don't cflock it. Some CFXs are multithread
safe,
others are not. You may need to ask the programmer before tring one.

Check following CF Manual's "Usage" section for some reference.

Re: cfhttp/cffile locking?

2001-06-03 Thread Bryan LaPlante

You only need to use scope on server, application and session. To single
thread another resource like cfhttp, cffile or cfregistry use the name
attribute instead.
