IgniteFusion anyone?

2004-12-14 Thread Ryan Jones
IgniteFusion has just released a new version of their CFML engine.

I wanted to re-ask my question about whether anyone here had experience with
IgniteFusion in a production environment? Is IF a real option for powering a
live website?

I am very interested in use CFML on our news/community sites, but can't afford
CFMX or Bluedragon at present. (I know Bluedragon has a free version, but even
that doesn't allow you to sell products or support SSL).

Re: Mail Server Software

2004-12-14 Thread phillip

Just my 2.5 cents:

The interface is very nice. I have not seen the documentation of its
capabilities. I am sure it is a great product... However.. and you knew that
was coming... Imail's interface is totally customizable ( Apache webserver
and parsed via Perl on top of a windows platform) and its backend is
compatible with a variety of ODBC compliant databases (including MS SQL).
Imail's peering capability also makes it very scalable. Also, Imail is a
fine product that can be easily extensible with a variety of 3rd party tools
(i.e. Declude.com). Bottom line is that Imail is a very very developed
product that is very powerful in the right hands.

Truth be know, I'll take Sendmail, Exim, QMail on BSD (all free) any day of
the week over any "doze" based email system. Also, for a web frontend,
Squirrel Mail is in PHP, completely customizable, and free (open source).
IMHO, the nature of mail servers (handling and filtering the worst traffic
the Internet can offer), dictates that doze is not the safest choice for
high risk daemons like SMTP, POP or IMAP.

Warmest Regards,

Phillip B. Holmes (not employed by IPSwitch)

Verity searching a database table

2004-12-14 Thread Ryan Sabir
Hey all,

On a site I manage there is the facility to search through forum posts
for particular keywords. This is currently being done through a simple
'LIKE' query in SQL, and its starting to become very inefficient.

I was looking at how I can optimise this and investigated Verity. From
what I can tell, to get Verity to index a database table, you first
need to query the entire table, then index that query result. I don't
think this is going to work for me, as the table I want to index is
over 800 MB in size.

Is there another way to build a Verity collection based on the database
table, that perhaps can be done incrementally?

I've been looking for info online about this, but it seems pretty
sparse...

thanks, bye!

So in addition to being a Windows-only IDE, it's also a competing

Is the Plum framework usable separately? Is it documented separately?

CF/Acobat multiple page forms

2004-12-14 Thread Al Musella, DPM
Hi.
I want to create a .pdf that contains multiple pages with forms filled
in with data from cf.
I found how to create a pdf with a single form with filled in data
using an .fdf file, but I can't find the syntax of the fdf file format
(you have to pay to get the adobe documentation on it)
Does someone have a sample fdf file that they could post?

to clarify... the form that gets filled in is a 1 page form, but I print
them in batches... so instead of creating 50 pdfs and printing each
separately, I want to create 1 pdf that has all 50 forms, so I can print
it once.
by the way - it is cfmx on windows

thanks
Al

1. Imail's webmail client vs SmarterMail webmail

2. Imail stores the email for each folder in a single text-format .mbx file.
This can result in some HUGE files that degrade server performance considerably

meant to be - a separate file for each.

I tried replacing my 2nd query with that code (the qGetMatches query) and got
the following error:

the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax

Keep in mind I'm using MySQL v4.0.18 as my database solution - would your code

CFEXECUTE Weirdness

2004-12-14 Thread Burns, John D
I'm trying to use CFEXECUTE to automate some stuff with iMail. iMail comes
with some .exe files for scripting various tasks such as domain creation, user
creation, etc. One of the files is called adddomain.exe and I am using it to
add a new domain to the imail server. I tested on a quick sample page and it
worked fine, so I started building a CFC with it. Right now, the CFC can add a
domain and remove a domain. I've added 4 or 5 test domains and removed them.
The problem that I've found is that when I add a new domain, it actually adds
all of the domains that I added up to this point (the ones I already deleted).
I can't figure out what's going on, but it seems like the commands are somehow
being cached and everytime the adddomain.exe file is run, it just appends the
new command to the end of the past commands and runs all of them. Does anyone
have any idea where I should start on this? I'm assuming there's some kind of
caching going on, but I'm not sure if it's within CF or within the iMail .exe
or what. I tried restarting the CF service but that doesn't seem to fix the
problem. I've also restarted all of the iMail services to no avail. Please
help if you have ANY idea on how to track down and fix this issue. Thanks a
ton in advance!

Given the extremely fragmented nature of the Windows mail server market
(there are dozens, at least) what was the cause of this mass exodus from
iMail to SmarterMail? SmarterMail sounds like a fairly immature product
and I would think there are more attractive servers available for large

If they wrote the web service with a standard toolkit like Axis or .NET's
web services stuff, they'll also have WSDL URLs. Have you asked them for
WSDL URLs? You should do this before you try reverse-engineering WSDL from
sample SOAP envelopes - you don't have nearly enough information from your
sample SOAP to make this easy.

Subject: Axis error on OS X

Hi,

I'm running CFMX 6.1 on Tomcat on OS X everything works fine apart from web
services, if I try to call:

   http://localhost:8080/cfusion/services/sample.cfc

I just get:

   AXIS error
No service is available at this URL

And if I try:

   http://localhost:8080/cfusion/services/sample.cfc?wsdl

It reports:

   AXIS error
   Could not generate WSDL!
There is no SOAP service at this location

I've googled extensively on this and hunted around on MM but nothing useful
has turned up. Any suggestions?

TIA,
Ant

The Plum Framework is intended to become a standard framework for ColdFusion
development. It's a rich framework that contains many useful services and
reusable code libraries.

The Plum IDE is built on the .NET Framework, so it runs on Windows OSes only
right now, but the generated code will run on any platform. We'll soon see
how the Plum IDE runs on Mono, but I'm not counting on anything.

As best as I can tell, Adalon generates only the shells into which you have
to handcraft all your own code, but it's still one hell of a cool product.
It also generates documentation and other useful stuff. Everyone should
check out Adalon to see if it fits your bill. I hear the guys who run the
company are very helpful, too. I've met them a couple of times and they
were very knowledgeable.

The basics for a mail server UI are there in Fusionmail and the next version

Use try/catch. There is a variable in the cfcatch struct that tells you
the error code. If the error code is the one for "Lost connection to

Hi Eric,

Using "#updir#\small" is fine, unless you're on a Unix box, in which
case you'd want "#updir#/small".

The most likely reason for the error is that the
"C:\CFusionMX\wwwroot\portplus\images\2" directory doesn't existI
imagine you made "..\images" by hand, but if the "2" is a variable
specific to this image, or a page, or something like that, you'll need
to use CFDIRECTORY to create it before storing the file in it.

Cheers,

Yes, well I can certainly see your point with that analogy. Presumably,
after the putsch, those who disagree with Team Macromedia will be rounded up
for extermination, whether they use .NET or simply want CF to be better. I'm
sure this was covered at MAX.

> Silencing unhappy CF'ers who are having to diversify due to

Obviously, you haven't been silenced. However, you open yourself to ridicule
by the quality of your arguments. It's one thing to say that you're unhappy
because there are more .NET jobs than CF jobs. It's another thing to say
that this is because of specific features or lack thereof. Statements like
that need proof to be useful.

Personally, I wasn't offended until you Godwinized the thread with your
absurd Nazi reference. But if you want to change people's minds about a
subject, you need to present rational arguments beyond "seeing the big
picture" and "shooting higher". So far, your arguments can be condensed to
"I'm having trouble finding work" and "Tim so-and-so said .NET is serious
programming and CF isn't." Honestly, what kind of response did you expect?

Re: Mail Server Software

2004-12-14 Thread Matt Robertson
> Matt, does SmarterMail do a pretty good job filtering out spam without
> constant babysitting?

No, its tools are immature in my opinion. Worse than IMail if thats
possible. To get Imail to do a halfway decent job you needed a
third-party add-on like Declude, MXGaurd or ASSP. I bought Declude
myself, and found it to be best suited to someone who wants to be
hands on every day in the war on spam. I got tired of that after
about 2 yrs and switched to ASSP (assp.sourceforge.net) a year ago and
never looked back. Totally hands-off after the initial training
period.

When IMail was pulled from the market the 3rd party companies that
depended on it started scrambling. MXGaurd told me they would have a
version working with SmarterMail by mid-December. Expect Declude to
be there in the same ballpark.

>Does anyone have any performance comparisons between SM and Imail?

There was a lot of anecdotal reporting going on among server admins
firing up SM and saying it seemed to handle load as well or better
than IMail. No one who switched or fired up new servers on SM came
back and said anything bad about it.

Frankly the biggest impact I experienced was with SM's stellar web
mail client, which includes a cross-browser wysiwyg editor. Clients
love it -- especially considering IMail's relatively primitive web
interface.

>Especially the migration tools they offer for imail admins

On one server I rolled over 40 domains and several hundred users'
email with no complaints. All passwords xferred fine along with mail
on the server. It was a nice, simple process.

>aside from looking like some program by some company i really dont like
>icewarp looks decent

Thats the Merak mail server, Icewarp is the actual developer. In
Czech Republic I think. Their US reseller is in VA and the VisNetic
mail server is also Merak rebranded. Its big, bad, powerful as you'll
ever want and priced accordingly, although still cheap compared to
when IMail was for sale.

Re: Mail Server Software

2004-12-14 Thread Matt Robertson
In reading that last post I gave the wrong impression: I really like
SmarterMail. I use it for my own personal domain services. I use
ASSP as a gateway in front of it so I don't care about its bad spam
performance (they mean well, and it has the potential to be a great
system, but it isn't yet).

You can also hook in SpamAssassin into it directly via a free 3rd
party plugin, as well as ClamAV (both are free). I do the latter and
it works *great*, with automated virus def updates.

SM has some really nifty features. The crowd-pleasing web mail is not
to be underestimated when it comes to your clients' perception of the
value of your service. I also like its ability to listen on a 2nd
port so I can bypass ISPs that block port 25.

Config'ing it with ASSP was a real pain, though. Turned me into an
open relay until we could figure out what was wrong. That was a week
of pure Hell. Anyone who wants advice on that score, I can save you a
lot of grief. Contact me off-list.

RE: UDF required=no complaining

2004-12-14 Thread Damien McKenna
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I completely
misunderstood an example code snippet in a book.

I guess the question would be better phrased as:

- With tag-based UDFs, are the arguments listed in the order that they
are passed?

- How do you cope with multiple optional arguments?

Fusebox 3 - circuit not loading fbx_settings.cfm?

2004-12-14 Thread Damien McKenna
I've got several sites done in FB3 that work well. One particular site
has this strange problem with two specific circuits. The circuits are
three levels down (sub-circuits of About/Conferences) and neither load
the fbx_settings.cfm file. The odd thing is that this doesn't affect
other sites I have, only this site, only these circuits. Is there
anything I could be doing wrong? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Silence the dissenters. Hitler practiced that concept well!

***There are only a handful of irrelevant posts in this thread out of 98 (as of

Silencing unhappy CF'ers who are having to diversify due to the lack of CF
jobs, and are willing to subject themselves to ridicule by their peers, is NOT
a good thing. Some of you guys seemed to have intentionally posted irrelevant
responses just to make the whole thread look that way.

I appreciate Ben Forta's candidness and honest opinions on this topic.

I'm sorry if I offended people by saying we've been lulled to sleep. Maybe I
should've said we're being complacent instead. And Macromedia *might* be too
complacent about this whole situation. SOME of Team MM seems to be at least. I
think we all need to see the big picture, and shoot higher than we are. Maybe
it's .NET sexiness right now, maybe it's not. But even if it is, will it hurt
to try and push CF? And figure out EXACTLY why so many are moving to .NET right
now?

To be honest, I've visited the Plum site and I still don't really
understand what it actually does. It doesn't sound like it supports
any of the standard frameworks and it doesn't work on Mac or Linux it
seems.

The closest thing that comes to mind is Synthis Adalon - but when I
asked on one of the lists whether it is meant to be a competitor to
Adalon, no one responded.

Well, the original email I saw about it was posted by Peter Tilbrook
on cfaussie and it absolutely did *not* say what the product was. When
I saw a post from Adam directly, it gave some vague idea about the
product.

I agree and whilst I teased someone on cfaussie for being "too lazy"
to click the link to go find out about it (I was joking and the humor
was really aimed at Peter T for his information-free post about Plum),
I would like to encourage authors to provide more information when
they are promoting something especially including information about
which platforms products run on and what databases they support. I get
*very* frustrated if I have to go to a site and navigate through to
the download - and sometimes as far as actually installing a trial
version! - only to find that the product is platform-specific!

RE: Mail Server Software

2004-12-14 Thread Ben Rogers
We are running the relay edition for our backup server. The performance is
great. It's about as configurable as you can get. The price is great. The
interface could use some work, but two out of three ain't bad.

That said, I don't know if I'd run it as our primary. The thought of having
to write a mail server from scratch with all the functionality in an
application like modusMail is pretty daunting. Building a spam filtering
engine alone is not insignificant, much less keeping up with it.

2004-12-14 Thread Burns, John D
I use iMail and functionally it's not bad. We haven't had any major
problems or anything with it. It supports everything you mentioned and
wasn't a bad price. I wish that they had a more open API that I could
use to create accounts and such using CF. They have a few things, but
they're pretty limited. The webmail that comes with it is decent but
nothing to write home about. I've worked on writing a new client in CF
that would use CFPOP or CFX_IMAP (from Paul Vernon) but ran into some
problems and then got side tracked with some other "must-do" work. All
in all, it's worked for me and I haven't had any issues or complaints
from clients.

Hi all,

Just looking for opinions here.

What do you recommend (and your customer like) for pre-packaged server
based email messaging software (like iMail, Smartermail, sendMail etc).
Could be either Win or Unix/Linux based. Would need to have webmail
access and the ability for end users to connect via pop or imap using
standard email clients (Outlook, OE, Eudora, etc).

Also, are there third party server based products that you like and are
effective for filtering spam?

Thanks,
Mark

OT: IIS references?

2004-12-14 Thread Emmet McGovern
I'm a regular contributor on a hosting control panel forum and I noticed 9
out of 10 times people would rather blame the cp before they look at their
own understanding of IIS and user management on windows. It amazes me how
many of these people are behind medium 1000-1 client hosting companies.

I'd like to compile a list of books related to IIS and Windows hosting
management. What are some favorites? Topics would include everything from
bastion setup to security. Personally, I use the MCSE certification books
by MS but they tend to be a little boorish.

RE: Mail Server Software

2004-12-14 Thread Ben Rogers
We've been using modusMail by Vircom for a long time. We're pretty happy
with it. The support is generally excellent. The spam filtering is extremely
good. They also offer anti-virus via an embedded Norman engine.

You can configure modusMail to store mailbox configuration in a database,
which means you can create accounts and such with ColdFusion. However,
database and server config can only be stored in the registry.

The interface itself is pretty bad, but then most mail server GUIs are. The
Web mail system just got a major upgrade. The interface is vastly improved,
but it's a little buggy. We're waiting for a service pack before we upgrade
Web mail.

Our biggest problem is the pricing. Every time I turn around, the price
doubles. We purchased the product (then called VOPMail) for under $600. I
think that our current configuration would cost about $10,000. We tried to
upgrade to a distributed/clustered configuration, but the price was out of
our range.

They also have a bad habit of putting new features in spin off products and
letting the product under the old name languish. Of course, the new product
costs quite a bit more than the old.

At this point, we're pretty much locked in. We can't switch to another mail
server unless it offers spam filtering at least equal to modusMail's.
Otherwise, our customers would revolt. I have yet to find such a product.

So, I'd recommend modusMail if you can afford it. The support is great. The
spam filtering is nothing short of amazing. But their sales and pricing
tactics are terrible.

pass them in comma seperated in the proper order or use cfargument to name

Re: UDF required=no complaining

2004-12-14 Thread Barney Boisvert
If you use positional parameters (myFunc(x, y, z)) then they are
passed in order. If you use named parameters (myFunc(arg1 = x, arg2 =
y, arg3 = z)) then they are passed according to the names.

If you want to pass a specific argument with positional notation, you
must pass EVERY argument that is listed before, regardless of whether
they are optional or not. No such limitation exists with named
parameters, just name the ones you want to pass and send them in.

Phil,

You need an absolute file path (as in C:\blah\blah.txt) to use CF File. What
you may be looking for is "CFHTTP". Try

first, 'x' is a structure, not a string, so it's erroring. Second,
after you fix that, you're going to immediately get an error saying
that you haven't supplied a value for the 'field' argument, and it's
required.

Imail is no longer for sale. Ipswitch folded it into another product
and no longer sells it as a standalone.
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2004/10/26.html

They backpedaled a bit on continuing to sell their service agreements,
but most on the ipswitch lists regarded it as a dead product as a
result; killed by an untrustworthy company, and their list traffic has
since slowed to a crawl. The whole scene was quite epic when it went
town a couple of months ago.

Floods of Imail users moved to SmarterMail. I have a couple of servers
running it now. Got it horrendously cheap at http://helmtastic.com. A
loophole in the SM reseller agreements that lets it go out this cheap
will be closed by 1/1/05, I hear. The folks at SM told me I was crazy
to buy it anywhere else. And they have been quite responsive on tech
support.

If you must have an 800 lb. gorilla, look at merak mail server. While
SM has worked great for me, Merak was my first choice until I decided to
try SM and see if it worked. The savings in $$$ was considerable.

You can do a Directory listing and then run CFFILE against

You can not delete multiple files with one CFFILE statement

DC rocks, as well as MD and VA! Although if you are looking to move to
govt, you'll most likely need a security clearance for the higher
paying enterprise level gigs. We have a CC MMUG here at Dept of State

Re: BUT what does it &@#$%^ DO?????

2004-12-14 Thread Mike Kear
Dan, I get abour 800 emails a day. Probably 2/3 of them have links
in them. I just dont click on links in emails unless there is a
reason. Forgetting the spam, if I went and looked at all those sites,
I would never get any work done. I'm not unique here. Most of us
have more email in a day than we can deal with and still get our work
done.

I didnt see the statement about what Plum does. After that, there was
a lot of noise about Plum but very little about what its for. I've
seen lots of emails about Plum on this list, but because it wasnt
about anything that concerned me, I never read them.

I'm not criticising anyone in particular, and I'm not criticising the
Plum team.

I'm just saying that the people who want a product to be accepted and
used, need to recognise that they will get a lot more acceptance if
they remember that many of their potential customers/users wont know
what its for. And therefore either wont bother or wont even notice
it.

It's not MY responsibility to learn about everything that gets
written. Its the AUTHORS job (or who ever is looking after marketing
and promotion) to tell me why I should bother with it. It's in their
interest I'd have thought, to make it as easy as possible for their
potential users to see the benefits.

Re: CF vs ASP.NET! GET YOUR FRESH POPCORRRRN!!

2004-12-14 Thread Adrocknaphobia
I know this thread is supposed to be dead, but I wanted to follow up
what Ben had mentioned about CF in Gov.

Our branch was formed within the State Dept to consolidate all IT
under one roof. We inheritied nasty asp applications that rely heavily
in AD and msSQL. (ever try to change a domain on AD?) I don't really
think I understood the defenition of 'stovepipe app' until I started
here. They made a major shift away from outsourcing projects to
contracting companies towards contracting positions internally.

We standardized on J2EE and Oracle. The java guys out numbered us for
about 6 months... until we knocked out a dozen enterprise CF apps,
while thier entire team is still working on just two. Needless to say,
all new applications are developed in CF and all of our older apps are
ported to CF (asp, delphi, etc.) Any application deemed mission
critical, or need to be integrated with other technologies are done in
CF.

I been constantly interviewing for CF positions for the past 8-9
months. Of course, we dont post our jobs on dice or monster.
Contracting companines usually do thier own recruiting, plus the
employee always gets shafted in salary and benefits. As a result the
majority of the people we found through those sites didn't last past 2
months & had bad attitudes (tech-arrogance).

FWIW, D.C. area is also home to several of the most active user groups (oh,

which is the chicken and which is the egg - but it does all fit together
nicely.

Re: Mail Server Software

2004-12-14 Thread Matt Robertson
Imail is no longer for sale. Ipswitch folded it into another product
and no longer sells it as a standalone.
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2004/10/26.html

They backpedaled a bit on continuing to sell their service agreements,
but most on the ipswitch lists regarded it as a dead product as a
result; killed by an untrustworthy company, and their list traffic has
since slowed to a crawl. The whole scene was quite epic when it went
town a couple of months ago.

Floods of Imail users moved to SmarterMail. I have a couple of
servers running it now. Got it horrendously cheap at
http://helmtastic.com. A loophole in the SM reseller agreements that
lets it go out this cheap will be closed by 1/1/05, I hear. The folks
at SM told me I was crazy to buy it anywhere else. And they have been
quite responsive on tech support.

If you must have an 800 lb. gorilla, look at merak mail server. While
SM has worked great for me, Merak was my first choice until I decided
to try SM and see if it worked. The savings in $$$ was considerable.

If nothing else, you should be able to take the SOAP templates and
synthesize your own WSDL document, and then you can use it with CF.
Kind of a hackish, reverse-engineer way to go about it, but it should
work.

RE: Consuming Web Services

2004-12-14 Thread Clark Slater
Thanks Dave and Thanks Dave,

My client has actually supplied all the SOAP templates so I do know what the
service is expecting, just uncertain of how to invoke the service in the
absence of WSDL. Wish I was at the DenverCFUG meeting, it sounds like it
would have been enlightening. Sincerely hope there is a way to consume a
SOAP service, any links/tutorials greatly appreciated.

Come on Mike, really, you have to be kidding me? Someone creates a
tool (and an incredible one it is), opens the beta up and it is going
to be free when released, and you cannot click on a link to see what
it does?

To me, one of the biggest assets to these lists are the links to
products and knowledge which help me do my job.

I submit to you it probably took you twice as long to type this email
than it would to have gone to the site to check out what PLUM does.

Does the database field "login" a string or numeric type?
If it is String, then by using the > symbol indicates
That you are doing a numeric comparative..

What does LOGIN field contain?
What is the user entering as form.login?

The query below does not search the form.login value correctly. I tried
either isdefined or just checking with a NEQ to "", but it does not
display logins greater than a value I submit. I checked the logic on the
bottom of the page (see below) and it seems correct. I even added a
trim, but still it does not give me the desired results on the number of
logins. Its in an Access table

What am I coding wrong here?

Irvin, thanks. I realized that I was using the attributes incorrectly,
because that's how another tag, CFX_Text2Query from the same author
works. I need to get rid of the user supplied header row and provide

Infact we switched from iMail to postfix.. in 99..

For spam Spamassassin or Barracuda Spam Firewall..
