[Fwd: Re: Migrating Ancient CF Code]
Hi Ian, Railo contains a search engine as well. But it's not Verity, it's Lucene, the open source Apache project. You don't have to change the code in order to use Lucene. It still uses all known tags like CFINDEX, CFSEARCH and CFCOLLECTION. Flash remoting works as well. Possible over regular .cfm calls or by addressing webservices. Just check my blog entry on this: http://www.railo.ch/blog/index.cfm/2007/2/8/Flash-remoting-in-Railo The only thing that does not work is reporting. We do not know yet whether we will support it or not. Depends. BTW: we will be in the californian area in two weeks. Luis Majano (developer of coldbox) hosts a meeting in Los Angeles on July 10th. NOTE (BIG NOTE) If your website(s) are dynamically driven and change frequently Akamai is not an option, as far as I know. FDA has all of their ColdFusion apps locally hosted and not cached at Akamai. -- Scott Stewart ColdFusion Developer SSTWebworks 7241 Jillspring Ct. Re: Anyone use Akamai?
Im not familiar with the pricing but I can say it was easy to setup. basically we pointed images.domain.com to akamai. Then we created an images-mirror.domain.com All images had full url http://images.domain.com/image.jpg When the user requests the page if akamai doesnt have the image they request it from images-mirror and then serve it up. Big improvement! on Speed not to mention less traffic to our servers. We even looked at using their DNS services too. I walked into a situation a couple of years back where they were getting the dreaded jRun Error that it almost became folklore around the office among the non techs. We figured out that if we just applied the latest hotfixes that it cleared up. There was something to do with the JDBC drivers throwing an error and bringing down the instance. On 6/21/07, Cutter (CFRelated) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: OK, quick OT. Moving to using Subversion in our dev environment (yeah!), but hitting a few stumbling blocks. I can 'export' a clean version of my 'HEAD', or any revision. But, I have a massive (3,000+ template) code base. Not every 'commit' to the system is tagged, or part of a branch. I reread your post and noticed this -- not sure what you mean about not every commit is tagged... tags are generally used to bundle up a bunch of changes to move it to qa/integration/uat/whatever. it's a snapshot of the repository status at a particular time you've pasted a label onto. So as you're working in trunk, you decide this is it, use svn copy to tag it as REL-1.0 and now you've got a reliable point to pull the release from, even while development is continuing in trunk. And as far as branches -- there shouldn't be all that many branches. Folks using SVN typically use branches for feature changes, releases, or in some cases individual developers. The most basic scenario is that everyone's working in trunk, you get to a point where it's ready to move to QA or production or whatever, you tag it, and then you use that tag for deploying. 3000 templates at @ 10kb each (generously large for CF imho) is still not all that much to deploy... 30mb uploads are quite feasible across a DSL modem let alone T1. I routinely deploy an 8gb application (mostly media content) using export from svn across a T1 line (unless it's an emergency - - then we push just the cf templates (assuming a cf prob) or run a USB drive the 30m out to the colo). How (or is it even possible) do I pull ONLY the modified files from the repository? I have SvnAnt installed within Eclipse, to utilize Ant with Subversion for creating builds and deployments, but I'm still struggling to get my head around all of this. You *could* create a patchfile, which contains all of the differences between two versions of something in the repository (eg a file, directory, or entire tree) and then apply the patchfile directly to your previous application to update it -- but that's a pretty unusual approach to build management that will probably bite you in the end. My general experience is that exports are the best way to go, though in some cases using svn checkouts on the *integration* server to manage the initial build works fine. Even in that case, the QA/UAT and definitely production builds are typically full exports. -- Steve Cutter Blades Adobe Certified Professional Advanced Macromedia ColdFusion MX 7 Developer _ http://blog.cutterscrossing.com ~| ColdFusion MX7 by Adobe® Dyncamically transform webcontent into Adobe PDF with new ColdFusion MX7. RE: Tables Not Working Right
It has to do with the HTML. You're aligning left. If the screen is wide enough (maybe you have a wider monitor now) the tables will align left, then left against the next table, etc., until you are out of display space, in which case the next left aligned table will wrap to the next line. You can correct this by: 1) aligning tables center, or; 2) nesting each table in table rows of a nesting table, or; 3) wrapping the table in DIV or span tags which span a 100% width Robert B. If the content is highly dynamic, and lightweight (few images or other heavier media), you won't get as much bang for the buck. You will still see some benefits, but the cost may not be justified. If you are doing a lot of video, a lot of static content, have very high traffic levels, or tend to have periodic high spikes of traffic (like a news site), Akamai will absolutely be worth it. Well I'm suspecting it's the 'content-type' header. On the servers that have no problem, it's kicking out '8bit'. On the servers with issues, it's kicking out 'quoted-printable' Since we're still on CF6.1, I can't just do a straight up cfmailparam with the word type in any value (i.e. 'content-type'): http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_19374sliceId=2 Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the provided workaround to work - and others have said it results in standards-breaking emails anyhow. Re: Anyone use Akamai?
To expand on Dave's point, it's important to consider your site's content and traffic patterns. If the content is highly dynamic, and lightweight (few images or other heavier media), you won't get as much bang for the buck. You will still see some benefits, but the cost may not be justified. Thanks for all the great information gentlemen. Very helpful. Mainly, it's my boss who is worried (he's a big time worrier!) about our site performance in Europe and overseas, as the site is currently hosted in the U.S. To my mind, we don't really need Akamai as yet; only about 10% of our traffic comes from overseas, and the performance in the U.S. is fine. From all the information presented, it seems like Eric's setup, i.e. having Akamai cache only images (and/or video if we start serving up video), might be the way to go for us; I want to be able to make a change to a .cfm template and have it reflected everywhere, immediately. Sorta depends on the cost involved. -- Josh ~| Macromedia ColdFusion MX7 Upgrade to MX7 experience time-saving features, more productivity. http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion?sdid=RVJW Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/message.cfm/messageid:281928 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4

RE: Tables Not Working Right
Thanks Robert, Every time I see an email from you, I freak out and think that my step-father (who is a service manager at a truck repair shop) suddenly got into Programming. His name is Robert Harrison. Anyway, thanks for this. I ended up putting it all into a table. That solves the issue until I re-write it. Bruce -Original Message- From: Robert Harrrison [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 22, 2007 10:17 AM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Tables Not Working Right It has to do with the HTML. You're aligning left. If the screen is wide enough (maybe you have a wider monitor now) the tables will align left, then left against the next table, etc., until you are out of display space, in which case the next left aligned table will wrap to the next line. You can correct this by: 1) aligning tables center, or; 2) nesting each table in table rows of a nesting table, or; 3) wrapping the table in DIV or span tags which span a 100% width ~| Upgrade to Adobe ColdFusion MX7 The most significant release in over 10 years. RE: CFFORM with flash format does not work in Internet Explorer ONLY
It is working fine for me in IE and Firefox on my computer and a live server (http://www.vtiassociates.com/test.cfm). One thing that I did notice though, in IE you have that annoying EULA crap that requires you to click on the Flash Form in order to use it. You can include a file in your CFIDE/Scripts directory. Create a new file, enter in this code: !--- Start file content --- //v1.0 Copyright 2006 Adobe Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. function CF_RunContent(src){document.write(src);} !--- End file content --- Then save the file as CF_RunActiveContent.js Bruce -Original Message- From: siriusthird [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 22, 2007 11:49 AM To: CF-Talk Subject: CFFORM with flash format does not work in Internet Explorer ONLY I am new to flash form in coldfusion. Re: Anyone use Akamai?
I highly recommend giving them a call and talking it through with them. There are a lot of different options available, and they can help you decide which is the best way to approach your scenario. I don't know how the front line sales people are, but the professional services team - the folks who actually work with you on the setup and integration, are extremely knowledgeable and get involved very early in the discussion so you'll end up getting the right stuff for your needs. Speaking from an inside perspective, the service they deliver is great, and the underlying technology is astonishing. Basically if you can benefit from what they offer, and the cost makes sense for you, don't hesitate to do it. That may sound a little sales-pitchy, but only because I know how they operate, and know the level of talent they have in their engineering and RD. They are ubiquitous for a reason (and they are - you'd be hard pressed to find many major sites who DON'T use them.)
