Re: Determining gender....when good info is available

100% kludge, but it works:

http://barneyb.com/r/guess_sex.cfm

Source is below the HR, and there's a Groovy in a comment. Slightly
different semantics, but same general idea. Neither one handles all
the edge cases properly.

Enterprise doesn't offer perf increase, cf8 runs noticeably on 64 bit
than cf7. Enterprise only offers cluster management.

Determining gender....when good info is available

2009-03-25 Thread Doug Smidt

This isn't so much a "gender-specific" question as it is a parsing question. I
need to figure out the gender of the person from some bio information. Here's
an example:

"Tracy Smith is our finest pole-vaulter. He has set many team records, and his
personal best is 19' 8". Tracy's other hobbies are race cars and reading about
the migration of polar bears, but his real passion is fly fishing. His eight
year old daughter also loves fishing, and she always catches the big ones!"

A short example, but one that fits the bill. It's unlikely the sentence about
his daughter will be in there, but it's something I would like to be prepared
for. Using keywords such as "his", "him", "he", "Mr.", etc., what would be the
best way to parse this out and keep a running total of the number of "male" and
"female" keywords that hit and return a "Mr." or "Mrs." based on the one with
the highest total.

I realize this isn't 100%, and I'd rather not get into a debate about the
not-so-foolproof nature of this and instead focus on the most efficient way to
parse this data and make a best-guess effort at getting the right one.

Re: CF8 Enterprise worth the cost? Any experience with it in a virtual environment?

2009-03-25 Thread James Holmes

Enterprise will become more important for you if you move to VM servers.

CF8 standard is licensed per VM server (or per 2 CPUs, whichever is
greater). This adds up very quickly. By comparison, Enterprise is
licensed only by the count of CPUs and the physical server count.

For example let's say you want 10 VM servers; 5 out of each of two
boxes with 2 CPUs in each box. Two copies of CF Enterprise will cover
this. For Standard, you'll need 10.

All covered in section 3.1:

Re: How do you get motivated at work?

2009-03-25 Thread Gerald Guido

>> If you're bored with an aspect of coding, try to automate it or
abstract it away so you don't have to write the same things over and over
again.

+1 for that. If you are writing the same things over and over it is
definitely time to automate or abstract the process for creating these
items. If you find the exact same instance of code in a site or sites. EX::
file upload, login forms and validation, menu items, queries, etc. it would
serve you well to abstract these into functions or custom tags.

I am also assuming that you are talking about writing code for talking to
databases. Perhaps wrongly. If not... There are tons of code generators and
tools for abstracting your database and creating crud code (transfer,
reactor, Data faucet, Illudium, Squidhead, CF Gen, ICEGen etc etc.) . And if
those don't do what you want cfdbinfo makes it ridiculously easy write your
own code generator.

With all the tools out there, there is absolutely no reason for CFers be be
writting forms, list pages, queries or CFCs by hand for basic CRUD
functions.

Fwd: public call for speakers...cf.O

2009-03-25 Thread Mark Mandel

Hi all,

You might have already heard that cf.Objective() is coming to the Pacific
region and that we're going to hold cf.Objective(ANZ) in Melbourne, AU later
this year (12 & 13 November 2009).

At this stage we're opening the public call for speakers. If you're
interested in coming over to Melbourne and present on a topic that goes
along nicely with the "ColdFusion Enterprise Development" scheme
cf.Objective() has become successful in the US, we'd like to hear from you.

Topics we're looking for fit into (but are not limited to) the following
major categories:

Architecture and Design:

OOP, Design Patterns, Frameworks, Modeling, Refactoring Legacy Apps,
Persistence etc.

RIA:

LC DS and CF, Ajax/Flex with CF, BlazeDS and CF etc.

Process and Methodology:

Agile Development, SOA, Managing large CF architectures, Debugging and
Metrics etc.

Integration and Testing:

CF and Java, Build and Deployment processes, Server tuning, Unit Testing
etc.

Please let us know by April, 24 2009 if you're interested in coming to
Melbourne to present at cf.Objective(ANZ). A short blurb about yourself and
one or multiple topics you'd be interested in presenting on would be very
appreciated. Please
send all topic submissions to speak...@cfobjective.com.au .

cf.Objective(ANZ) will provide speaker accommodation for the night of the
12th to the 13th of November 2009 at the conference venue (Renaissance Hotel
in Melbourne). At this stage we unfortunately can't provide any further
financial assistance with travel cost or other expenses.

We look forward to hearing from you!

cf.Objective(ANZ) Steering Group

Re: CF & Facebook

Hi Michael,

Sorry, I don't check house of fusion often. Based upon what you described, I
would say that you can have your users create a profile on your web site. In
this profile, you will have a field that would allow users to give you/your
company permission to post video on their profiles (instead of granting
permission on a per video basis). As long as this field is set to true, you
would use XFBML to call fb:serverfbml to upload video clips to the users'
profiles.

RE: Multiple Record Queries and CFCs

2009-03-25 Thread Josh Nathanson

Well you've run into the big problem with using ColdFusion and objects. The
object instantiation speed in ColdFusion is unacceptably slow, when you get
up into a large number of objects.

The best solution to this problem that I've found is the IBO (iterating
business object). Essentially, rather than instantiating a large number of
objects, you create a single object which has a struct of arrays to contain
the query data.

It takes a while to wrap your head around it, but it's well worth the
effort.

For more information do a search for Peter Bell ColdFusion IBO. He's the
one that came up with the idea when he ran into the same problem.

I have been trying to write my applications using the 3 tiered method of
development, presentation layer, business logic layer and data access layer.
I am having trouble coming up with an efficient method of displaying
information returned in a query that has multiple records. Correct me if
I'm wrong, but shouldn't all data be placed into an object based on a
component so that the business logic can massage the data and return valid
inforamtion based on business rules. If I am correct that that means that I
should create an object for every record of the query before I display the
data. Doing this slows down my web pages by 100-200% going from fractions
of a second to around 20 seconds for a query that returns 100 records. All
of the examples that I have come across on the web run the query in the data
application layer and then in the presentation layer, loop over the query
and output the data straight from the query (i.e. #qEmployees.firstName#).
The problem I have with outputting the data straight from the query is that
I will have to have business logic in 2 places. In the business logic
component and the data access component.

How are you (anyone who would like to reply) handling this scenario and
keeping the integrity of the business logic?

Re: Multiple Record Queries and CFCs

2009-03-25 Thread Donnie Carvajal

Brad,

Thanks for the quick reply! This is kind of difficult to search for on Google
and I have found nothing. Up until now, I have been creating an object outside
of the loop and then setting the data to the object inside the loop. At the
end of each iteration, I call a Reset() function. My components have 2
stuctures as proerties, Variables.default and Variables.instance. I set the
Variables.default keys in the "Constructor", code at the top of the component,
and then I set all of the Variables.instance keys to the corresponding key
values from Variables.default. The Reset() function sets all of the
Variables.instance keys back to the corresponding key values from
Variables.default. This method is faster than instantiating everytime, but it
is still slower than desired.

I will check out the links you sent and see what I can find. Thanks again.

Re: Delivery Report

2009-03-25 Thread Dan Baughman

The number in the item checkbox would the primary key of the item in the
items table, if you always have this of items then that is the simplest
solution, your both over complicating, not the arbitrary order they appear
on the page.

You would join to the items table based on the order number, but your where
cause would select based on the item's primary keys, not the order numbers.
thus the order number would be contained in the result query as it is now.

Your trying to have coldfusion do too much work that SQL could more simply
do. Also ANSI style outter joins are deprecated and would be better be
avoided.

I stand by my original suggestion.

Re: Multiple Record Queries and CFCs

2009-03-25 Thread Dominic Watson

I like to use an 'iterating business object', or IBO. At its most
basic, the component has the cfquery object as a property, as well as
a pointer to the current row. It has methods for looping the query,
ie. next(), previous(), first(), last(), etc. These I put in a base
IBO component. It also has business logic methods that apply to the
current row, and these I put in the individual IBOs that extend the
base.

The IBO takes a Data Access Object (DAO) as an argument in it's
constructor and I standardize my DAO methods so this can be done
generically (but can be tweaked if neccessary). It is basically bean
and gateway in one - without all the wasteage. An example useage might
look like:

myTableIbo.load( myPkId ); // here the ibo would call its DAO's load
method and set the resultant query as its query property, ready to be
iterated

 #myTableIbo.getSomeColumn()#

I actually prefer to just use plain queries in my display pages and
have a getQuery() method in the IBO for releasing the query for
display - but using the IBO in the display page doesn't bother me
either.

RE: Multiple Record Queries and CFCs

Welcome to the Object Instantiation Penalty. :)
ColdFusion is much slower at object creation than Java or C++ when you
are dealing with thousands of object.
http://www.codersrevolution.com/index.cfm/2008/9/22/ColdFusions-Object-Instantiation-Penalty-How-Bad-Is-It

This got better in CF8 and is supposed to get better in CF9. In the mean
time, look into a CF-specific design pattern called IBO or Iterating
Business Object.
It is a single object that contains a result set and gives you
programattic access to the data on each row via getters and setters.

http://www.pbell.com/index.cfm/2007/6/20/IBO-20--Return-of-the-Iterating-Business-Object-Now-on-RIAForge

It is not without it's own problems, but it directly addresses your
problem.

RE: CF8 Enterprise worth the cost? Any experience with it in a virtual environment?

2009-03-25 Thread brad

For me, one of the big advantages to having enterprise is the lack of
throttling on tags like cfdocument, cfthread, cfexchange, cfreport, and
event gateways. If your app doesn't have any heavy use of the throttled
features it might not be a big deal but if PDF generation for example is
a huge feature and will be used a lot it might be a requirement to go
with Enterprise so your requests won't get backed up under load.

Apologies if this has been asked and answered countless times, but...

We're about to upgrade our infrastructure from CF7 to 8, and are trying
to determine if the Enterprise edition is worth the cost. We've heard
(mostly from our hosting company) that CF8 Enterprise running on a
64-bit server offers a serious performance boost over CF8 standard, but
I haven't really been able to find any other sources that line up cost
vs. performance in any meaningful way. We'd of course like to run
Enterprise, but our business guys are likely to balk at the cost unless
we have some good ammunition.

Evaluate will handle embedded variables, but will not handle embedded CFML.

But if one is not using Oracle, then this order would not make sense.

Not sure if it would work with a cfinclude, I'm thinking it would though.

Outside of the performance issue, you need to be 100% confident that you
know what is saved in this column. I mean 1000% sure.

I do this from time to time but paste it into the DB directly, no
administration interface for it so I know what's in there.

To clarify, you can't acccess Excel using the Jet driver, as a datasource.
If you need to read/write/create an excel doc, you still can you'll just
need to use some other tool. Like POI (
http://www.bennadel.com/projects/poi-utility.htm) or any of the third party
tools available.

The ability to run 64 bit is sometimes worth the cost... More to do with
hardware than CF :) For one thing you can run a huge heap on 64x - there is
no more 1.5 gig limitation on the JVM heap size. That's very important for
some applications that have reached their limit. You can also use cfthread
and fine tune the threading for other processes that used to be limited...

We had a plan for a 2 LB server solution for a customer with a couple
million visitors a day. We moved them to a single 64 bit server (connected
to a 64 bit MSSQL server) and they haven't had a single timed out response
yet. We are moving at a leisurely pace to get the other server in the LB
since there are no longer any performance issues.

Just remember, you can't run Jet (Access or Excel) on 64 bit. If you are
using Access or the jet driver to hit excel etc then you should reconsider.

Subject: CF8 Enterprise worth the cost? Any experience with it in a virtual
environment?

Apologies if this has been asked and answered countless times, but...

We're about to upgrade our infrastructure from CF7 to 8, and are trying to
determine if the Enterprise edition is worth the cost. We've heard (mostly
from our hosting company) that CF8 Enterprise running on a 64-bit server
offers a serious performance boost over CF8 standard, but I haven't really
been able to find any other sources that line up cost vs. performance in any
meaningful way. We'd of course like to run Enterprise, but our business
guys are likely to balk at the cost unless we have some good ammunition.

Our current production environment is 2 web boxes running Windows2003, IIS
and CF7 Standard. Glancing at the features of Enterprise over Standard,
it's probably the case that we only really care about server monitoring and
maybe high-volume email--aside from speed improvements.

Another wrinkle is that we're going to move to a virtual server environment
(specifically, Hosting.com's "Cloud 9" service, which runs on top of VMWare,
and just sounds really cool). If anybody has any words of wisdom about that
kind of environment (e.g. "it's production-ready" or "run screaming now"),
it would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Ben

AW: html in database

2009-03-25 Thread Gert Franz

Chad,

yes that's normally the way to do it.

You have to do something like this:

In Railo you can create a RAM mapping that points to the server's ram. Let's
call it /ram

Then you do the exact same like above:

The problem is that with writing something to the disk you always hurt
performance. That's why the "ramdisk" or let's say the virtual file system
in memory is much faster than writing it out. As far as I know CF9 will
support this as well, just as Railo does.

RE: SQL server - Order totals by month, even without month data

2009-03-25 Thread brad

I too would recommend creating a temp table with a record for every date
you want represented in your graph. Instead of unioning it though, I
usually left outer join from it to my data with an isnull on any number
columns so they show up 0 for months where there was no data.

use with GROUP attribute. details are in the cfml reference -
check it out as it is very particular syntax requiring nested
tags:

#columns_you_do_NOT_want_repeated#

#columns_you_need_repeated_for_each_column-name#

#maybe_other_columns_you_do_NOT_want_repeated_below_repeated_output#

you can also nest multiple tags with different GROUP
attributes, too.

You don't need to duplicate the Struct, as you're not going to have

Re: Delivery Report

2009-03-25 Thread Jason Congerton

Hi

Thank you for your replies, you are correct Azadi, I can not just have check
boxes with the same name.

I have resolved my issue in the following way,

I removed the group attribute from my initial form output which returned one
row for each order item I added an orderitem_id#currentrow# hidden field,
created two lists, one for orderid and one for the orderitems id, and used the
IN operator on my query.

Which now returns the desired results!

I have one slight problem with the initial display, its a little messy. Lets
say the customer has ordered three items, now that I have removed the
grouping(so I can get at individual items) the customer name is returned 3
times as well, can I use some conditions to stop this, or be able to group
color the rows for the particular customer.

RE: scopes

I'm not sure if you're saying it works or doesn't work. If it doesn't, try
FORM.putAll(URL) or StructAppend(FORM, URL) to get the URL vars into the
FORM scope.

First, you can't embed one CFML tag within another. If an attribute
value of a CFML tag contains an expression wrapped in hashes, it will
automatically output to the string used for the attribute value.

Bad:
Good:

Second, you can't specify multiple Content-Distribution headers within
the same document. I'm not sure if that's what you're doing, but you
do have two of them in your code sample.

Re: scopes

2009-03-25 Thread Brian Dumbledore

Got you. So I guess in the above scenario, when I do a form dot, it resolves to
variables dot form dot
but if there is no dot (if I am accessing the whole structure), it doesn't try
it in the variables scope.

I did a #structkeylist(form)# and it came back as blank.

Thanks for your time

Just use the StructAppend() function, a lot less code.

May or may not want that over write flag set to false, just depends on the

Re: scopes

2009-03-25 Thread Azadi Saryev

all your "form dot names" are evaluated by cf as variables.form.somename
'form' is a reserved scope name in cf. it is noted in cf reference
manual that one should NOT use built-in cf scope names as variable
names. when you do, you can never be sure what you get in the end...
like in your case, cf creates a variable named 'form' in the variables
scope - it has no relation to the built-in form scope (thus you get an
empty form dump).

what you should use instead is:

No, it's not right. As the documentation on the tag states, if you don't

Re: SQL server - Order totals by month, even without month data

when i had to do a similar thing, this is how i did it:

your query returns monthName and totalOrders columns.

create a structure from your query with Month as key and Total as value:

create a list of month names in the format returned by your query:

create a new query you will use for your chart:

loop over the mthslist list and populate the new query with month name
and either 0 or your query's totalOrders value from the structure you
created before:

now you have a 'chartqry' query with all 12 months you can use for your
chart.

Error when Clustering CF Instances

2009-03-25 Thread Phillip Duba

I get the following error while trying to add an instance to a cluster:

No MBean is registered on server under the ObjectName *:*.

Also, trying to get to the administration server for this particular
instance results int he following HTTP 500 error:

There is no web application configured to service your request

I've checked as many logs as possible and cannot find anything in either the
cfusion instance logs, the particular instance in question's logs, or
general JRun log files. This is under a default ColdFusion 8 Enterprise
Multi-server 64 bit installation on RHEL5 and there are 5 other instances
already running on the installation. I get this error when adding any more
instances. Any thoughts/directions on where to go from here would be
appreciated. Thanks,

Phil

RE: SQL server - Order totals by month, even without month data

2009-03-25 Thread William Seiter

There are 2 ways that come to mind right off the bat.
1. Create another table that has each month in it. Do an outer join that
allows the other table to return 0 for the months where you have no records
in your original table
2. Inspect the query in CF for missing months. If there are any missing
months, then create a new query using QueryNew to hold the old query, plus
the new rows of months that have a 0 in them.

I have your typical tblorders. I'm trying to query it to get order totals by
month, and I'm outputting them in

All goes fine, except in 2009. We have no order data for April-December of
course, so the query returns just three rows (Jan, Feb, March).

I need it to return all 12 months, with 0 for the months with no orders
(April-Dec)

I've played with this query and can't get anything to work for me. Any
ideas?

Thanks!

html in database

2009-03-25 Thread Chad Gray

I am doing a CMS type system and letting users edit pages with FCKeditor then
storing the page HTML into a database field.

I would like to make the menu system database drive and not statically created
in FCKeditor. The menu system is inside of the area that FCKeditor is making.

How do I insert a or any CF programming into the HTML when it is
pulled out of the database for display on the page?

Re: SQL server - Order totals by month, even without month data

2009-03-25 Thread Donnie Carvajal

The only way to get data into a query is to have data in a table. So there are
a couple of options.

1. Create a months table that has 12 records
2. Create a temp table with 12 records

You may also need to create a years table as well.

Then your query would be something like

SELECT year, month, SUM(total)
FROM (SELECT * FROM Years CROSS JOIN Months) AS Months
LEFT OUTER JOIN
tblOrders
ON Month(orderDate) = month
GROUP BY year, month
ORDER BY year, month

The cross join will give you a record in your query for every year that you
would like to account for and every month of that year.

You can of course add any other criteria you would like to the WHERE clause.

RE: SQL server - Order totals by month, even without month data

2009-03-25 Thread Robert Rawlins

Hello Will,

I'd advise building yourself a calendar table, these are always a useful
facility in any application where you're going to be doing report
generation, I've attached the SQL script which creates and populates your
calendar table, this basically creates a record for each date in a range and
breaks into different date parts, then for your query below we select the
dates from the calendar table, ensuring we get a record for each group, be
it day, month, year etc and then we'll LEFT OUTER JOIN the order table on
that date, this ensures we get a row for every date in the range and it'll
just return NULL for the months where orders don't exist.

SQL CREATE Script: http://pastebin.com/m57ba4578
SQL INERT Script: http://pastebin.com/m65d6ee0f

That script will create a table and insert records for the next 10 years,
change the dates on the insert script to suit your own requirements.

The script for your main query would then look something like this:
http://pastebin.com/m1e234813

I have no way of testing that script, its working off the info you gave, if
it doesn't work then let me know your table structure and some example data
and we'll bash something together.

Hope that helps you on your way.

Rob

Re: Delivery Report

2009-03-25 Thread Azadi Saryev

maybe i am not fully understanding your requirements, but...
if you give order item checkboxes names like
cb_#this_order_id#_#this_item_id#, then when your form submits it will
post only checked boxes, so you will have form fields like cb_1_1,
cb_1_2, cb_3_4, ... - you can then loop over form.fieldnames, and if
current fieldname starts with "cb_", extract the order_id and item_id
from the filedname and... do whatever you need with them! (i.e. add them
to a list/array you can then use to query your db to get necessary data
for your report...)

Re: httponly

I realise now that the CFLOCATION is not server side although it
does still seem to be the best solution.
If your entire site can be SSL then you can set jsessionid cookies to be
secure in the jrun-web.xml - this sets the secure attribute but not the
httponly which would still be off until the second request of a session.

Also, since you are using SQL, you can use a CTE to dynamically generate
a date range as a temp table, so to speak. I prefer a regular table as
I mentioned in my last reply, however.

Delivery Report

2009-03-25 Thread Jason Congerton

Hi

I am trying to create a delivery report for my website, the report is generated
from the following tables

ca_customers, ca_order_summary and ca_orderitems (please see query below)

ca_customer >> holds the customer information (one record)

ca_order_summary >> holds the order summary information (one record)

ca_order_items >> contains the order items (multiple records)

SELECT c.*, os.*, oi.*
FROM (ca_customers c INNER JOIN ca_order_summary os ON c.ca_cust_id =
os.ca_ordersum_cust_id) INNER JOIN ca_order_items oi ON os.ca_ordersum_id =
oi.ca_orderitems_sum_id
WHERE 0=0
AND os.ca_ordersum_archived =
AND os.ca_ordersum_invoiced =
AND os.ca_ordersum_delivered =
AND c.ca_cust_web_id =
ORDER BY ca_ordersum_id DESC

(please note .* used for example)

I would like to produce a dynamic form which displays the orders one by one and
also list the order items individually and have a check box next to the order
items,
so the user can decide which items from the order are included in a delivery
report.

Order #1: Contains 5 items P1,P2,P3,P4,P5 The user would only like P3 to be
included within the report.

I have handled dynamic forms before and have used the following format for my
check boxes, and order summary id

And use this type of code to create a list of id's to pass to a query, however
this obviously just gets the ordersum id which will still include items I do
not want. I can't be very far from what I need, just need a little help
tweaking it.

Would I be better to build a 2d array i.e. order ID, product id if so could
someone point me in the right direction with creating the array and accessing
the array in the subsequent query to be produced.

I hope this explains what I am trying to do, it does in my head anyway:-)

Kind Regards

Jason

SQL server - Order totals by month, even without month data

2009-03-25 Thread Will Tomlinson

I have your typical tblorders. I'm trying to query it to get order totals by
month, and I'm outputting them in

All goes fine, except in 2009. We have no order data for April-December of
course, so the query returns just three rows (Jan, Feb, March).

I need it to return all 12 months, with 0 for the months with no orders
(April-Dec)

I've played with this query and can't get anything to work for me. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Will
