Re: Spell Checker

2005-08-16 Thread Chuck Mason
If your hosting provider runs a java server then JSpellHTML might work out for
you (have been using it for years now). Here's the URL for JSpellHTML:
http://www.thesolutioncafe.com/jspell.html . The default page of that site
lists some other options that might work for you too.
Cost = $170.

Ben Forta wrote CFX_Spell tool a while back, which might also work for you:
http://www.emteksys.com/products/cfxspell/ .
Cost = $200

Regarding open source, if your server supports PHP, you might want to check
out "Speller" at http://spellerpages.sourceforge.net/. I reviewed & tested
it on a Win2k server where it worked fine, then had issues with it on Windows
2003 -- might be worth your review if your budget is limited.

Good luck!
Chuck

Prototyping

2005-08-01 Thread Chuck Mason
I'm curious as to what tool other CF'rs use to "prototype" their CF
applications for proposing XYZ to the client. I've seen some use Photoshop &
Fireworks, Dreamweaver is of course an option. This may sound odd but, I've
found MS Visual Studio's "Grid Layout" to be an attractive option as I can
drag/drop all UI to where I want in record time and the interface is
web-based versus graphics. Being the CF programmer that I am - after the
non-functional prototype is accepted, it's archived and I begin development
with CF (prefer Dreamweaver as code editor). I'm sure many would say (maybe
not on this list), "why build in VS and not follow through w/ASP.net coding"?
I prefer CF, though VS (using grid layout) "currently" serves my purposes for
"non-functional" prototypes.

What do you use for prototyping? Am open to other options ... perhaps their's
a plug-in for CFEclipse?

Regards,
Chuck

Hosting with these services ...

2005-01-12 Thread Chuck Mason
I need to find hosting for an application that utilizes: CFML(5+), SQL
Server, Perl, Java Server (currently using TomCat to power a spelling
component), Classic ASP. Finding this combination might be a challenge
so I thought I'd check here while I am searching. Any recommendations?
Since we have some "Classic ASP" involved in this mix, it probably has
to be Windows NT/2K/2003 server.

Re: Beating a .net horse! Job interview confirms suspicions...

2004-12-24 Thread Chuck Mason
I think we can all agree on one thing ... we're all intimately drawn to
development as it relates to the Web. Whether it be DotNet, Cold
Fusion, PHP, Python, whatever ... the end result - the function of our
application - is what counts.

I've been developing sites with Cold Fusion since CF 3. When our
company decided to go the DotNet path, I had the opportunity to study
and utilize Visual Studio in building DotNet apps - and have developed a
love/hate relationship with DotNet. I prefer CFML and now that New
Atlanta has developed Cold Fusion to run under the DotNet framework, I
may be able to persuade management to continue supporting my development
in CFML in addition to some apps collaborated on in DotNet (other two
developers (one VB.Net, other C#.Net) are opposed to learning CFML). At
the very least - I've picked up an additional skillset to help me build
apps - something which will be beneficial to the company I work for, my
own firm, and/or the next company I work for (have worked for current
company for 7 years).

In my opinion - the bottom line is ... what can you efficiently
design/develop that will make your company successful in terms of
recurring revenue. Whether the tools you use are a mix of VB.net, C#,
Cold Fusion, PHP, MySQL, SqlServer, Flash, Javascript, Java - doesn't
matter in my opinion so long as the end result brings in dollars and the
application is built to scale (code comments and docs don't hurt).

All the best ...
Chuck

Hackers and Painters - Applied to Cold Fusion

2004-07-26 Thread Chuck Mason
Was undecided about posting this here versus CF-Jobs-Talk but since it
involves a technical question versus being job-related, decided to post
to CF-Talk.

I've recently read the book "Hackers and Painters" (by Paul Graham) and
it was a very exciting book to read for those of us involved in
programming who one day dream of building the "next best" software
product.  As Paul Graham speaks of superior programming languages and
targets LISP as being "the one", this book got me thinking about CF.
I've been a CF / Visual Basic guy for the past 6-8 years and know
nothing of LISP and/or whether it would be reasonable to study it in
terms of designing a Web software product (Viaweb, which sold to Yahoo
as their shopping card builder, was programmed in LISP).  So to the
bottom line ... for those of you Web software developers planning on
designing the next best application - one which outperforms all others
in it's class (shopping cart builder, lead gen app, etc.), - is Cold
Fusion truly the language to focus on?  Other contenders are of course
Asp.net, PHP, Python, Perl, (and Lisp?).  I have found programming Cold
Fusion to provide rapid application development over the years but have
recently been directed into the "dark side" (Asp.net) and ... using
VisualStudio.net to program Asp.net apps is quite nice impressive,
though I miss programming in Cold Fusion.

Setting Shared Object Return Variable from CF & Flash Remoting

2004-06-11 Thread Chuck Mason
I am trying to set a shared object from my "flash remoting" return
variable - but have not had any luck. The return variable is returning
and populating a combo box just fine (as an example). My attempt at
passing the return variable to an object and then setting that object as
a shared object is below.

/* -- Begin -- */
function getID_Result(result) {
// Bind Combo Box to data
// Use DataGlue.bindFormatStrings function to do this
DataGlue.bindFormatStrings(test1, result, "#rid#");
trace(test1)
}

test1 = newObject();
test1 = SharedObject.getLocal("test1");
/* -- End -- */

Thank you.

Cookie - Spoof Domain

2003-02-10 Thread Chuck Mason
Hello ...

Before I ask my question, let me first state that I am not planning on
doing anything malicious.

I have a business partner that had their development staff set a
cookie from their domain. Unfortunately, they messed up their
tracking mechanism as such that when I send my URLString to them to be
tracked, if their cookie exists, my tracking variable will not be
tracked.

Question: While I understand the security hole that this would be ...
thought I'd ask anyway. Do either of you know of a way to spoof the domain of
a cfcookie so I can "remove it" from the client's machine before sending my URLString
tracking variable to
my partner's site? I have attempted the following thus far, but neither works:

*=*

*=*

Server Environment: Windows2000
CF Version: CF5

Thanks in advance.

Flash Remoting - Combobox Values Not Passing

2002-08-15 Thread Chuck Mason

Hi there,

I used Kevin Towes flash remoting example for his "Application
Development Center", located here:
http://www.macromedia.com/desdev/mx/coldfusion/articles/remoting.html
and it works great! I thought I'd experiment by adding a text
input-box, static combobox(1), and use the existing "parkTypes"
combobox(2) to send selected values to my cfmail page. No problem
sending the text box and static combobox(1) values, but was unable to
send the "parkTypes" combobox(2) value, which gets its data from the webservice call
to my database.
Could it be that the combobox(2) does not populate the labels/data in
the combobox component? The combobox(1) has pre-defined values in the
"data" and "lables" properties of the component.

Any ideas on how to send selected values from "parktypes" combobox(2)?

Thanks so much.

CFMail and Two Server References

2002-03-20 Thread Chuck Mason

Hi there,

Unless I have missed something, I am surprised that CFMail does not have the ability
to use more than one mail server reference for backup (our ISPs mail server has been
problematic lately, so we'd like to set our mail server as backup reference). ASPMail
ala CF_ASPMail custom tag allows one to reference three mail servers for redundancy,
although, I'll have to rewrite a few things in the "body" to use ASPMail. Have I
missed something here with regard to CFMail's inability to reference more than one
mail server? (I hope not...this business is cruel when backup systems aren't
utilized.) If CFMail does in fact only allow one mail server reference, do either of
you have any recommendations of a good/solid CF based tag, (other than CF_ASPMail),
that can reference more than one mail
server, and allows CF processing inside of the body (CF_Aspmail does not) ?

Thanks in advance!

OT: Independent Consulting versus Full-Time

2002-02-13 Thread Chuck Mason

Hi there,

Just curious as to how many of you are independent consultants versus
full-timers. I'm a full-timer, and have luckily not been one of the
"casualties" over the last couple years. Business is good, however,
building up someone else's company versus my own, with the possibility
of getting laid off, or the company going under any time, makes me
really think about my business/marketing experience, combined with
internet development experience, and whether now is the time to begin
"spreading my wings" toward independent status. Have either of you
recently taken this "leap" into independent status? Perhaps some of you

have found independent status lonely, and have become "wage slaves"
again - if so, what were your experiences? My thoughts are that as
developers, some of us are not as "marketing savvy" as we are
"development savvy", so taking the leap into independent status could be

like tying an anchor onto ones ankles, and jumpping off a cliff into the

storming seas. I'm considering taking that dive, however, want to "soar

like an eagle", keeping an eye out for opportunities, and catching as
many "business development proposals" as are out there, bringing them
back to my perch to build, then deliver. Excuse the clichesjust
feeling a bit entertaining at the moment. Have any of you "soared like
an eagle" lately - if so, what advice can you give to those entertaining

the idea? Have either of you been successful with beginning to spread
your wings by catching evening and weekend gigs - if so, what marketing
strategies do you use?

Cheers!
Chuck
