Good point.
If everybody is happy with CFeclipse, let everybody use CFeclipse.
If it is not the case, let Adobe develop something else, but not the
same thing.

by the way, if Adobe is to develop something else, take CF Studio
for model,
the design is already made, and EVERYBODY will be happy ;-)

Hey Claude...HOF doesn't seem to like my email these days :-(... it
seems even Michael isn't getting my emails as I have tried to email him
about the issue as well...

You can also select IE from the view module and it will bring up an IE window.
I agree that it is a waste of time and effort to develop a browser module when
it would be better just to bring up IE, Firefox, etc and just refresh them.

Feel free to forward this to list...

But CFEclipse is not a base program, it is a plugin for Eclipse.
This is one of the reasons I don't like it: Eclipse is much more
general, much too general, it aims at development
of any application, possibly in any language.
The other thing I don't like is its nasty habit to name differently what
I've been using for years.
Another thing is that it looks an alien in the Windows environment.

Absolutely. I never understood the need for a view module in editors.
First, it is so easy to have IE, Mozilla or both open on the page, save
the page form the editor
and just refresh it form the browser.
Secondly, what's important is what the page will look like in browsers
used by visitors,
not in the editor's view module.
Developing a view module in the editor is just a waist of time.

Adding new options will not help.

The advantage of CF Studio is that everybody already love it. Its only

Silly indeed!
And it is as silly under CF6

Note that if you
=#len(Silly())#=
you get = 5=, thus the extra space is not actually returned by the
function call, but
is inherent to any function call inside

However =#len("Silly")#=
outputs =5= correctly.
And if the function is defined in CFSCRIPT, no problem

Definitely a bug, and it has been there for a long time.

Re: Manipulate the DPI with cfimage?

2008-01-03 Thread Claude Schneegans
 >>Visually DPI represents "dots per inch" - it's a measure of "density" in
printing. The higher the DPI the better the quality of printing - right?

Exact. It's a density. The definition of a "resolution" is "the size of
the smallest element the instrument can measure,
-- if the instrument sees or measures things -- or generate, if the
instrument creates things.
It is closely related to the density, of course, but it is not formerly
the same thing.
Thus, the unit of resolution for instruments like printers, monitors or
scanners would be in inches,
or 1/1000 In. For instance, a printer with a density of 1000 DPI has a
density of 1/1000 In.
Note that on some optical instruments like cameras, or human eye, the
resolution is measured
in angle units. The human eye has a resolution of about 1 minute angle.

 >>On a monitor the "pixel" is in one way a measurement of size - as in "how
many pixels can I get on the screen".

Ok, now "how many pixels", this is called the "definition". This is the
maximum number of different elements
the instrument can measure or genrate (ie: lines in TV transmission)
Of course, the more pixels you have to represent an image, the better
the quality will be.
Note that:
density = definition / size of the working area
resolution = size of the working area / definition
then density = 1 / resolution

 >>When I look at an image in Fireworks I
get a measurement of pixels at the bottom - 800 by 600 for example - 96
"pixels per inch". That's a size measurement.

For the pixels, yes, but one should never should forget that it is a
virtual image.
Normally, a virtual object has no size.
Now, if you make a physical representation of your virtual image, it
becomes a real image,
and its size will be nb.pixels * resolution of the printer,
or nb.pixels / density of the printer.
Talking of pixels per inch in a virtual image just does not make sense.
Where are the inches we are talking about ?

 >>This setting (as I understand it) is really
related to the lossy compression that is used and dictates how aggressively
the file is to be compressed.

Exact, and it has nothing to do with pixels, or density.

 >>But this is where non-imagy folks like me get confused. I DPI is not the
same as "resolution" what is the proper term?

In my book it is "density".

 >> Is it "bit depth" or the number of colors used or what.

Yes, it is the numbers of bits used to express color, thus the magnitude
of the numbers that can be used
to express the color. Then one should finally call it the "color
definition".

 >>How do you reference the quality of the image
on the screen without using the word "resolution"? And if resolution IS the
proper term for the "quality" of an image, then doesn't it have at least
some correlation to DPI?

You cannot express the quality in DPI or any other kind of unit.
The quality depends on many factors like the pixel definition, the color
definition, the compression level
the precision and fidelity of the display or printing equipment, and
finally, the quality of your own eye !
The overall quality is a chain of elements, DPI is only one of them.

 >>I need education on this point. What is the proper way of referring
to the
"quality" of a digital image?

There is no really a unit to measure "quality", one only can take in
account the quality of each
element in the chain.
Just like in a old analogic sound equipment, the overall quality depends
on many element, from
the musical instrument to the auditor's ear, including the recording
system, the vinyl record pressing,
the piezzo pick-up, the speaker system, etc.

Exact.
Another good example is the MSHTML editor which absolutizes relative
link addresses
accordingly to the directory in which the editor is run, which can be
quite different from the real context.
If I want relative address, I don't need any one to make it absolute,
especially if it does it wrong.

SerializeJSON does.

I don't agree:
The purpose of jsstringformat is to make a string safe as a Javascript
string in a Javascript context, no more.
JSON is a text format that is completely language independent, not only
Javascript, but also HTML,
big difference. The context is much wider, so the escaping must be more
agreessive.

If it's a bug, it is only in the CMS that did not make sure the HTML

Not in the HTML parser.
The HTML parser does not parse the Javascript code, so obviously,
the parser must rely on its end tag to resume parsing HTML code.

I think one must remember that there are two layers involved:

What I mean is that normally, this kind of menu should expand when the

Menus that expand or collapse on a click are more like tree structures à

Exactly, I measure the time BEFORE and AFTER the build menu template is
called, and display the result in a comment line.
The average is about 350 ms.
I guess this would be too much for a million pages per day site, but for
yours and mine, not a big deal. ;-)

The menu I tested is about 50 items, and includes 7 sub-menus, thus
implies 8 calls to a recusrsive tag and 8 queries.

In my case, this would represent about 12 min processing time per day,
I suppose the 2500 pages will not be requested the same minute, so not
really a big deal.
Say they are requested within 12 hours, this would mean 25 min in 12

process time on the server, still not a big concern.

The problem is that it does not require ONE query, it is rather a

So rather than caching several queries, it might be more efficient to
generate one HTML menu

Re: How to dynamically rewrite this code...

2007-12-27 Thread Claude Schneegans
 >>I need to insert the new menu reference before the closing .

Ok, with this approach, you would edit directly the source code.

Personally I'm using an opposite approach:
- use a table in the database to store all menu items;
- build the whole menu from the table;
- for editing, I use a very powerful tree editing system in Javascript:
dhtmlxTree
(see: http://dhtmlx.com/docs/products/dhtmlxTree/index.shtml )
- then, I rebuild the menu table from the tree structure in Javascript.
It requires quite some skill in Javascript, but the results are rewarding.

I can handle several types of menu items in the same menu editor:
- Pages the user can edit himself,
- "System pages" ie. pages written in CF and taking their content
directly from database items;
- Links to other pages or other sites,
- Documents,
- public pages vs. Private pages for intranet,
- etc.

The user can move/add/delete menu items by drag'n drop, very powerful.

Re: RegEx Tools

2007-12-19 Thread Claude Schneegans
 >>Question, are there any online RegEx tools out there

Sure: you can design and test your regExp online here:
http://www.contentbox.com/claude/REwizard/index.cfm (IExplorer only)
and you can test a parse on your page address here:
http://www.contentbox.com/claude/customtags/REextract/testingREextract.cfm
Although you better read about REextract possibilities first :
http://www.contentbox.com/claude/customtags/REextract/testREextract.cfm

 >>that will allow me to paste a url, for example,
http://atlanta.craigslist.org/car/514214963.html,
ask what data I need returned, and give me the RegEx necessary to get back
just "atlanta" or any other "city" I need?

Well, this is Xmas, but may be you're asking too much ;-)
You will still have to design your own regexp, but REextract will make
it quite easier for you ;-)

Well, you don't actually need any Javascript to do that. Just give the
same name to all your checkboxes,
and the value passed to CF unde that name will be the list of all values
for those which are checked.

It's the opposite: it is checking for one character which is NOT alpha,
before AND after.
The only thing I'm not sure is if it will match in the case of the
beginning and the end of the string.
Better make sure, try : "(^|[^a-zA-Z])#wordKey#([^a-zA-Z]|$)"

Re: AJAX based mutiple file upload

 >>I was wondering if anyone has a demo of a Ajax based multiple file
upload that works with ColdFusion.

ColdFusion or not, it is impossible to have a full multiple file upload
with only Ajax client side.
Ajax is actually Javascript, and there is no possibility of multiple
file handling with only HTML and Javascript.
Unless the user has to select every file one by one, which is not what I
would call "multiple files" really.

The only solutions would involve some other client side tool like
ActiveX or Flash.

The only explanation is that CF is trying to do something with the

Re: Convert Letters to Numbers in Phone Numbers

2007-12-05 Thread Claude Schneegans
I've noticed that since a certain amount of time, it takes quite a long
time to process messages in the list.
According to the headers, I sent this message at 12:31, but I got it
back from mail.houseoffusion.com at 16:22:06,
thus 4 hours later.

This is not that I'm so anxious about receiving from the list, but due
to this delay, many people are answering
the same thing, just because they think the question was unanswered.

The style is set to visible only when the whole menu is set up.

I have written my own "advanced query builder", part of my "ODBCMyAdmin"

It supports JOIN, WHERE, ORDER BY, GROUP, HAVING, sub queries, UNION, etc.
All with drag'n drop on tables and columns, 100% CF and Javascript code,

I just need lots of time, which I don't have, to document it and package

Re: OT: SQL Data Type

2007-11-28 Thread Claude Schneegans
 >>What are the benefits on using a CHAR field versus VARCHAR?

The basic idea, back to the first database systems, is that all records
have the same length
and use the same amount of space in the database. Thus finding a record
is just a matter of multiplying this
record length by the record number, and read a bunch of bytes: pretty fast.

The problem is that database may grow pretty big if large fields are
needed, and use much empty space,
especially if many of the fields are empty, an empty field taking
exactly as much space than a full field.

Then came the VARCHAR, AKA memo field.
The idea is to store this field in a special area where all fields have
a specific length and occupy only the
space they need. The database then stores the address of the data in the
record, instead of the data itself,
but the record still has the same length.

The advantage of memo fields is more efficiency in terms of disk space
used, but it also implies a two step
process to retrieve data, then it is less efficient in terms of speed.

It is then up to the programmer to decide what type of efficiency is the
best for his application.

General rules are:
- the larger the field must be,
- the more often this field can be empty,
then the better it is to use VARCHAR.

Re: CF date values in Access

2007-11-15 Thread Claude Schneegans
 >>#dateformat(FORM.start_date, "MM/DD/")#

Several things here:
1) dateFormat needs a date in its first argument, so CF will first
convert FORM.start_date,
which is a string, to a date value.
2) thus CF will suppose that FORM.start_date is in american format.
But then dateformat is useless since it formats the date back in
american format.
3) Not sure Access will take a date in american format.
Better use createODBCDate() like in:
DateReceived >=  #createODBCDate(FORM.start_date)#
and it will be safer to make sure that FORM.start_date is a valid date
in american format.

If you want to be that fussy, you should also take in account files with

Personally, I rename the file using a UUID with no extension, then
analyse the file
to know exactly what's it's type, then rename the file and add the
correct extension
according to the type, or delete it if it is not a valid image.

Re: Image Management

2007-11-07 Thread Claude Schneegans
 >>So, I'm assuming, again, that there really should be little difference
in performance regardless of how the file data is accessed.

Basically correct;
however, images can make a huge amount of data, and the bigger the database
is, the less it's performance is. You're right that you're reading the
image from the disk anyway,
but with data in a database and files in the file system, instead of one
huge data repository,
you're having TWO smaller and completely separate systems working for
you, each one
with it's own index system, and an index system specialized for the kind
of job it is doing.
