Re: Moving from CF8 tp CF10 - Session Issues
I was testing a migration from CF8 to the Splendor Beta and I ran into a weird session issue. In my case, a session ID is inserted into a database table and there is a select that makes sure it is still the same a bit farther down. I was logging in and getting sent right back to the login screen. I found that the variable being inserted had some extra blank spaces and possibly a newline at the end. When outputting the variable, it looked exactly the same but the insert and select didn't match up. I ended up trimming the variable on the insert and select and that fixed the problem for me. It works fine in CF8 and CF9, I hadn't tried it in 10 yet, but the break is there in the new beta. I'm not sure what the problem is exactly, I just wanted to fix it so I could keep testing. >Got a site currently running on CF8 that we're migrating to a completely >new server with a fresh CF10 install. Re: (ot) Fed Reserve Hack
Having worked for the Federal Reserve as a full time CF developer and also currently working as a federal software developer (not using CF), I just wanted to clarify something. The Federal Reserve is not a federal agency, with the exception being the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. All of the individual branches are not federal. The folks that I worked with there in IT were really pretty sharp individuals. They do have quite a huge information security department too as they are are huge target for hackers. They do pay pretty well, but the job security and benefits package (good healthcare, pension, vacation) are the draw. While I have only been on the federal side for a couple years, I think the pay and benefits are really good. Most of the developers are at the GS-13 scale which can run around 86-115k, it depends on your step and location. The GS-14 is around 102-135k. There are far fewer technical GS-15 folks, but they would run about 123-155k. For anyone that is interested, the OPM site lists the various steps and grades. The usajobs.gov site lists any openings for anyone that should be interested. The IRS has a bunch of java and cobol openings right now for those so inclined. >From what I have seen, the state openings do tend to pay quite a bit lower, >but a lot of the time they have very generous pensions. > I don't know about the pay level at the Federal level. Re: cfftp with SSL (Coldfusion 8)
I have never had much luck when dealing with sftp or ftps through CF. We set up a test sftp server using Bitvise and I could not for the life of me connect to it. Using Chilkat's ssh/sftp .dll in a vb.net application, I was able to connect to it in minutes. So we just created an .exe and had the CF server call it as a scheduled task. > But livedocs show support only for SSH http://livedocs.adobe. > com/coldfusion/8/htmldocs/help.html?content=Tags_f_18.html. > > The same steps do not work when connecting to SSL. > > >From memory, SFTP support was added to ColdFusion in version 8. I got an Asus laptop last year. It was RMAed back to them 4 times before they finally sent me an exchange. The exchange arrived with a broken screen. So it had to be RMAed back. It was the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. You will probably get a lot of different opinions on brands, but I will never buy another Asus product. Re: Hosting.com, Your Experiences
We have had some dedicated servers with Hosting.com for a few years and have noticed some issues over the last year or so, really since the merge with hostmysite.com and hosting.com. We used to get quarterly calls from senior management to discuss our account and problems we were having. Those went away as did a lot of the accountability. We have had a hard time getting information on our account related to services and upgrades. The product offerings have changed so much that I don't think even they can keep up with it. While the technical support is still easy to reach and I think in general the techs do a great job, when the issues are bigger and need to be escalated, thats when the trouble arises. Now I see a VM shutting down on its own or crashing as a big issue. Sometimes convincing others of that seems to be more work than it should be. I like to know the cause of an issue and not just hear something like, seems fine now let us know if it happens again. My clients don't like to hear that any more than I do. Perhaps management decided to focus on products more than operations and support?? I don't know, but in my opinion I would suggest looking elsewhere as well. I think there are other companies offering well architected solutions at more competetive prices. ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:342780 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Re: ColdFusion 9 Cloud Hosting
We are evaluating Terremark's Enterprise Cloud solution right now. It really is amazing what you can do through their control panel. I can spin up or shut down VMs, allocate additional vCPUs, memory, or hard drive space all through the panel. Within a few minutes, I had multiple VMs with a combination of OSes, both 32 and 64 bit. I was able to tie in the built in load balancer and set all the rules on the built in firewall. I have been really impressed at the level of options present and with the relative ease of use to get it all running. Performance has been virtually identical to the physical servers we have through hosting.com. >I'm not trying to be difficult, but it takes more than virtual servers >to make a solution a "cloud" solution. I think any of those would work for one of our projects. We are also required to have SAS 70 Type II hosts for some of our clients. I think we may have to find a place to replace our hosting.com setup (4 vmware VMs across 2 dedicated servers) entirely. Anyone know of a SAS 70 host that may offer fairly beefy VPS hosting, or a suitable replacement for that hosting.com setup? Re: Diagnosing DB / CF problem
I see similar things like that happen sometimes and SeeFusion won't kill them either. In those cases, many times what I can do is run an sp_who on the database and look for the offending query, use a dbcc inputbuffer(processid) if need be and then kill that process id. Most of the time, that will allow me to kill the hung thread in SeeFusion so that no restart is needed. I haven't tried FusionReactor so I am not sure it works the same way, but the problem is very similar to what I have seen, just viewed it through SeeFusion instead. I dont know why it happens, something just seems to temporarily have gotten stuck on stupid. Hosted VPS recommendations
I am looking for a VPS to replace an in house development server. We already have licenses for SQL and CF. Most places seem to want to charge extra for a package that has enough ram and processing power to handle both of those and they then provide them as well. So I dont want to have to pay for a built in cost for licensing something we already have. Bandwidth needs are very low since it is just for internal work, nothing will be externally hosted on it. Re: CF901 Released
Oddly enough, it is the other way around. Any datasource that was NOT wrapped by SeeFusion is not working. Anything that is wrapped in the SeeFusion driver works fine. So I go create another SQL datasource and it will break, it gives me that same error. I wrap that datasource for SeeFusion and it works fine. A good example is the clientData storage database. That datasource stopped working completely after the patch. I tried wrapping it for SeeFusion and then it started working again. And by working again, I dont mean just in SeeFusion, I mean pulling any of our sites up in a browser window. CF9 Local scope issues
We are having all kinds of issues with the local scope in converting our application over to CF9. I have a few variables in the local scope named Filter_1, Filter_2, etc.. So I am looping through a counter to see if they exist like this (loop excluded). The problem is that it never finds them. I can replace the #loopcount# with a number and it will work. I can also put the local scope inside of a different scope, Request for example, and it does work. So the following does work: Why in the world can it find it just fine in something other than Local? This runs fine in CF8, by the way. ~| Want to reach the ColdFusion community with something they want? Re: Stung by HostMySite price increase?
This seems to have gone way off topic. But we got the same notice from them. I would have thought they would have thoroughly researched that pricing change before they contacted us, but I am not positive we even need the license upgrade they said we needed. When I asked them about it they told me they would have to research it more and get back with me next week. I seem to think they probably should have really made sure that what they were telling me I needed was correct, perhaps consulting with Microsoft and covering their bases and whatnot. So while I am still waiting for the answer on whether we need the license they say we need, you may want to double check on what they are telling you as well. >We recently got a note from HostMySite (now Hosting.com) telling us >about a big price increase in SQL Server licensing. Re: Anybody have exerience with KickAssVPS.com?
I ended up getting a dedicated server from CFDynamics, the $189 a month dedicated package. CF was included in the price as was a shared SQL server. While it isn't a particulary fast machine (not a quad core p4), since I have it all to myself, it runs like a champ. I have had it running for 2 years now without a single issue. It functions as the web server, mail server, and ftp server and since the CF and SQL are included in the price, it was the perfect match for me. While I dont have a VPS with HMS, we do have a couple dedicated VM machines there as well. The setup took longer than we were anticipating but support has been very good when needed. And for these servers, we moved from a CF7/SQL 2000 environment to a CF8/SQL 2005 environment and the performance improvement with that on the new HMS hardware was amazing. HIPAA compliance and server setup
Does anyone have any knowledge of HIPAA compliance related to web and database server setup? Specifically, if I have one database server and one web server, does the database server need to be completely removed from the internet or can the firewall filter out everything but what I need to communicate between the two servers anyhow, like the SQL Server Port? Just curious if anyone else has run into this situation with setting up a new set of servers and how much separation on the network there needs to be between the web and DB servers for HIPAA compliance. We do have private health information but no financial (PCI) info. SMTP/Smart Host
Our ColdFusion server is feeding mail to our local SMTP server on the same box. We had trouble with some clients saying they were not getting our mail. We started using a third party that is set up as a smart host for us in the SMTP so CF sends the mail to the SMTP which sends the mail to the Smart Host and they then send it on to the client. That took care of the delivery issue and gave us the ability to see detailed logs to confirm delivery. We have been having some trouble with the company that does the smart host sending for us now, so I was wondering if anyone can recommend a company that provides a similar service. Re: Updating CF7 JRE breaks Flex gateway
Thanks. I ran the tzupdater for our version to fix the DST issue we hit with the current version and dates with our Flex apps. I tried updating the JRE to fix that issue first and hit the gateway problem. Updating CF7 JRE breaks Flex gateway
I updated the Java Runtime on our CF7 server from 1.4.2_09 to 1.6.0_07. ColdFusion was working fine. But we had a problem with all of our Flex apps. They would load until you got to the point of a data call and then it would break. It was throwing a large list of errors related to the gateway. I changed the CF server to use the old JRE and everything was fine again. Is there something else I need to update to get the Flex gateway to work with the new JRE or am I just stuck with an old JRE on this server? I checked the flex config files and couldnt find anything that mentioned a specific JRE version. ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;207172674;29440083;f Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:315823 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4

ColdFusion 5 graphs stopped working
We have one old ColdFusion 5 server that has been humming along nicely for years now. But yesterday all of the graphs stopped functioning completely. Any page call with a graph on it just runs forever and never returns. I checked the log files and noticed 86 errors like this going back to yesterday morning when this problem started. CFGRAPH", "Id[38] ", "127.0.0.1:22718 timed out after waiting 300 seconds for [1] We have restarted all of the ColdFusion services but nothing seems to make any difference. Nothing was changed on that server that we know of that would have caused this. I cant get any type or format of graph to pull up at all. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Re: CF8 Dedicated server recommendations
I have a dedicated server at CFDynamics. It is pretty cheap for a dedicated server setup and in the year and a half I have had it up and running, I haven't had downtime at all. So their infrastructure has been more stable than anything else I have used to date. We have also been researching some SAS 70 compliant hosts and may be using hostmysite in the near future as well. Re: Flummoxed bya simple query
I had a problem once where an CFLDAP query returned an invalid column name. It was a similar issue where I could see it there, but I could not access it because it had an invalid column name. I found however that I could rename it using a method that I found on Ben Nadel's site. While your column name may not be invalid, perhaps you could try renaming it to something else to see if you can access it. information security training/certification
I have been in a CF developer role for about 9 years now and have recently moved in to a director of development role. SAS 70 Type II dedicated server hosting
Ok, I have a dedicated server through CFDynamics right now and the need to have a SAS 70 Type II certification at my host has come up. I have been trying to find out for a week now if they have that and my guess is that since they don't seem to know what I am talking about that they don't have it. So... Does anyone know of a good place to have a dedicated server hosted at? It would be running CF8, needs to also have a visual studio.net development environment, and will have access to a sql server. I saw hostmysite.com has that certification and they seem to have gotten good reviews. Anyone with any relevant experience in that area? IVR / Faxback solutions
I am hoping that maybe someone on here has some experience with this and can point me in the right direction. I am working on setting up a system where a doctor's office would call an IVR system, put in a bit of information on a patient and get the eligibility and information faxed back to them. I have a dedicated windows 2003 server with CF and SQL 2000 that has all the information I need, but I don't have a lot of experience with IVR or faxing solutions. So I am hoping someone on here may have done something similar or maybe can point me in the right direction. In order to save money, we would like to be able to build as much of this ourselves if possible. Whether or not that is possible, I dont really know. I am guessing we would need to purchase the IVR software, but if we could do the actual faxing from ColdFusion, that would be great. Re: Coldfusion hosting recomendation ?
I use CFDynamics for hosting a dedicated server as well. We have been with them for almost a year now and have had no problems. Speed for me has been excellent. The only complaint I have is that sometimes it seems like they shuffle some questions internally amongst the sales or support departments and they arent sure whose responsibility certain questions should go to. So sometimes it takes longer to get a question answered than I think it should. But I have never had an actual technical problem with the server or the network itself, it just seems like there is a slight problem with the way they are organized. It has never made me look for another host, I just think they could use some work on that part of the business. ~| ColdFusion 8 - Build next generation apps today, with easy PDF and Ajax features - download now http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/coldfusion/cf8_beta_whatsnew_052907.pdf Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/message.cfm/messageid:291708 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4
ColdFusion 8 memory usage
Ok, we have ColdFusion 8 installed on several development machines. They all have the same JVM version 1.6.0_02, two are Vista and two are on XP. On my Vista machine, the task manager shows jrun.exe using right around 500,000K of memory. Another Vista machine shows it using closer to 100,000k. Both were installed with the same options. Both have a maximum JVM heap size of 512 which appears to be the default. However, when I drop mine to 64, my memory usage in the task manager for JRUN drops considerably to about 125,000k. The other Visa machine actually went up to about 125,000k when it had the heap set to 64. This is even weirder though. When my machine goes back to 512 for the heap, my memory goes back up to 500,000K. The other Vista machine does as well until you reboot it. Then it goes back to the 100,000K that it is normally at. Rebooting mine seems to do nothing, it always goes right back to using 500,000K. I have the exact same thing happening on two XP machines. One has a normal memory usage of about 100,000k, the other is 500,000K. Has anyone run into anything like this? The ColdFusion service was restarted between all chances of the heap size.
