Can a hypertext link be made to self-activate without being clicked on?

Hi,

I have a number of auction listings on eBay. I've built a web page with =
thumbnail pictures of all my listings which I want to attach to the text =
of each auction listing. At the moment, I've put a hypertext link at =
the bottom of each listing's text which connects with the web page with =
the thumbnail pics.

What I want to happen instead is for the hypertext link to activate as =
soon as an auction listing loads, so the viewer can see the web page =
(which would then be attached to the bottom of each listing's text =
instead of opening in a new window) without having to click on a link.

I believe that one way to do so would be to hard code the web page at =
the bottom of each listing's text. The disadvantage of this is that =
each time I make modifications to the web page I'd have to make changes =
in each one of my listings, and as I have 15 listings at the moment and =
I expect that number to constantly grow, this process is not practical. =
On the other hand, the advantage of attaching the web page thru some =
sort of hypertext link is that I only have to make changes on one web =
page.

What I'm looking for, therefore, is a way to code the hypertext link =
that will cause it to self-activate upon the loading of each auction =
listing.

Sincerely,
---

OT: Is it to be expected that a server may be down for 24 hours once in a while?

2000-09-03 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

Is it to be expected that a server may be down for 24 hours? The server I
use has been down since yesterday, and I'm trying to decide whether to
should shift to a different server. It is true that this is the first time
it has been down so long, but as I need to use it to do business on the Net,
it is rather unsettling. However, I don't want to move if it is a situation
that may normally happen on most servers from time to time.

OT: Can anyone recommend a reliable hosting service for web pages?

2000-09-04 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

Can anyone tell me of a reliable hosting service for web pages? I run
auctions on eBay and I have a page which has thumbprint pics of all the
items, with links to larger pics. My last hosting service has been down for
almost 48 hours (as I was being hosted for free I can't really complain) and
I'm looking to move to a reliable on urgently.

OT: How to dock a pop-up ad?

Hi,

Someone once told me of a method to 'dock' pop-ups in free hosting sites, so
that the ad would appear at the bottom of my page and not in a separate
pop-up window. Can anyone remind me of how to do it?

Automatically transferring data from one table to another

2000-05-30 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

Is there a way I may transfer data from one table to another automatically?
I have a table containing jokes which can be accessed thru a browser. I'm
building another to which anyone can upload jokes. After reviewing them, I
want to be able to transfer any I wish to keep automatically to my first
table, without having to copy and paste them (for example). I'd appreciate
any suggestions.

OT: The Certified Internet Webmaster qualification

2000-06-21 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

I've just come across a qualification I've never heard about before, and I'd
like some information about it from the point of view of its usefulness.

1. How widely recognized is the Certified Internet Webmaster qualification?
2. How much of an advantage does its possession offer, in terms of having a
better chance of getting web work?

Sincerely,

2000-06-21 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

Bordercom International is the only company I know of that offers training
for the Certified Internet Webmaster qualification here in Jamaica. Because
of this, I'd like some feedback from anyone with experience with it (as its
name suggests, it operates world-wide).

1. If anyone reading this has taken any of its courses, how informative
have they been?
2. How well taught are its courses?
3. Do any organizations offer online instruction for the same
qualification?

Re: Extraneous end tag error message

2000-04-10 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi Jordon,

Thanks for the response.

> Had the same issue mising CFFORM with standard HTML form elements. Either
> use just the FORM tag,

This results in the following error message:

"Tag context validation error

The tag CFINPUT must be nested inside a CFFORM tag. The ancestor CFFORM tag
must be present either in the current template or in a template that
includes the current template using CFInclude"

 >or change the SELECT tags to CFSELECT and you should
> be fine. Thats how i resolved the issue

This has no effect. Any other suggestions?

Hubert

Sorry, folks, this is another test message to be ignored (but you can view the contents for an explanation)

2000-04-19 Thread Hubert Earl

Sorry, folks, this is another test message to be ignored. I use two ISPs,
my regular one which offers unlimited service, and an emergency one which I
use when the regular one is down, but which is timed. My regular one seems
to be giving trouble. I can receive mail from the list thru it, but when I
send mail via it, I don't get a copy of the mail I've sent for over 12
hours. With my emergency ISP mail goes and comes normally.

What I'm checking is this: mail to my regular account goes thru a mail
forwarding service. I'm checking to see if the problem is with my ISP or
with the service.

Thanks for your understanding.

Problem controlling output

2000-04-25 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

I'm having a problem controlling the output of a form. I have a form which
allows the user to choose up to 5 joke titles from a joke database, and a
form action template which should result in the output of just those 5
jokes, the titles of which were chosen on the form. However, the entire
database gets output. I've pasted the code of the form and action template
below. Please advise me.

The form code:

SELECT JokeID, JokeTitle
FROM WordJokes
ORDER BY JokeTitle

 Jokes

JOKES

Please select joke titles from the contents of the select boxes below. You
may select up to five titles at a time.

Joke title #1:

#JokeTitle#

Joke title #2:

#JokeTitle#

Joke title #3:

#JokeTitle#

Joke title #4:

#JokeTitle#

Joke title #5:

#JokeTitle#

--

The form action template:

SELECT Joke
FROM WordJokes
WHERE JokeTitle=JokeTitle

 JokeAction

#Joke#

Thanks, Birgit, for the code. Unfortunately, I was unable to change my form

Comparison of Website and Personal Web Server (for anyone with experience with both)

2000-05-03 Thread Hubert Earl

hi everyone,

i'm planning on shifting from website tp pws, because i find website very
unstable. quite frequently i've had the experience of website simply
refusing to run. a while back, my only solution was to reformat my hard
drive, a rather drastic process! subsequently, i installed norton
systemworks 2000, which could save registry configurations. since then, i
could get website to work again by going back to a configuration before
website stopped working. but after i run norton's diagnostic facility to
clear up any problems on my computer, website stops running. i'm tired of
dealing with all these problemss with website, which is why i'm shifting to
pws. however, just to make sure i'm not jumping from the frying pan to the
fire, have you been satisfied with your experience with pws? do you think
it is overall a better server than website?

Showing the results of an add or edit operation

2001-04-16 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

I've built four files. The first shows the contents of a table. The second is a form
which the user to add to, edit or delete from the table, after which the user is
automatically returned to the file showing the table contents. The third is the
action file for the add to and edit operation and the fouth the action file for the
delete operation.

The problem is that when the user is automatically returned to the page showing the
table contents, it doesn't show the results of the change for the add to or the edit
operations. The user has to hit the refresh button to see the changes made (for the
delete operation, however, the change is shown).

What additional code should I use so that the results of the add to and edit
operations are immediately visible, and in which file should the code be put?

Sincerely,

Problem with edit operation creating duplicate values in a Microsoft Access database

2001-04-17 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

I've built a web page with two html tables, one with the heading Users and the other
with the heading Items & Artists, showing data from a Microsoft Access database. Each
html table accesses a separate Access table within the same database. Each html table
also allows the user to edit, delete from or add to its Access table. After building
the Users table, with its associated form and action files, I made sure it worked for
all three operations. I then built the Items & Artists table and its associated form
and action files by copying the code in Users and changing relevant names (like column
headings etc.). However, when I try to edit the data in the Items & Artists html
table, I get the following error message: "The changes you requested to the table
were not successful because they would create duplicate values in the index, primary
key, or relationship" (tho the delet from and add to operations work OK).

This puzzles me greatly, since the code used in the Items & Artists table, form and
action files is identical to that used in the Users table, form and action files, with
the sole exception being table, variable, form, file and heading names (ok, that's
quite a few names, but the underlying code structure is the same). What should I be
considering as a possible cause of the problem?

Sincerely,
---

CFStudio editor window. I have a second problem, though, and I'd appreciate
some advice. Some help files on studio include a link (often showing
examples of code) which are supposed, I believe to show in a browser window
separate from Studio. The window comes up, all right, but with this error
message:

Error Occurred While Processing Request
Error Diagnostic Information
An error has occurred.

Can you or anyone reading this kindly advise me on this as well?

Problem with Studio 4.5.2 help

2001-04-23 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

While Studio 4.5.2 was indexing its help files for the first time, as a result of a
search I was trying to do, my computer froze. Now, whatever I try to search for, I
get the reply "No matches found" (even for words like "form" and "template", which I
tried to be absolutely sure about the situation). What can I do to rectify the
situation?

Re: Problem with Studio 4.5.2 help

2001-04-24 Thread Hubert Earl

Chris,

Thanks for the advice. Before I read your mail, however, I uninstalled then
reinstalled Studio 4.5.2 as the solution to the problem. When the
reinstalled program was setting its indexes, however, it hung, just as it
had the first time, and help searches were rendered impossible. Also, when I
have it running, my computer keeps giving me warnings about low system
resources, even when there are few other programs running at the same time.
I'm planning to stop using it, as I think it is very buggy. Does Allaire
Corp. have a department to deal with complaints about bugs?

Re: How can I get CF to ignore a form field with no data?

2001-04-29 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the advice. However, when I made the changes you suggested, I
still got this error message:

Error Diagnostic Information
ODBC Error Code = S1000 (General error)

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Field 'Users.MiddleInit' cannot be
a zero-length string.

The error occurred while processing an element with a general identifier of
(CFQUERY), occupying document position (2:2) to (2:28).

The code I used was this:

  MiddleInit = '#form.MiddleInit #',

  MiddleInit='#MiddleInit#',

Re: How can I get CF to ignore a form field with no data?

2001-04-29 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the additional advice. However, when I made the change you
suggested (that is, adding "" to
the code in the action page), I got the following error message:

Error Diagnostic Information
Just in time compilation error

An unknown attribute 'value' has been encountered at document position
(12:36) to (12:40) while processing tag CFPARAM. This tag can only take the
following attributes:

DEFAULT
NAME
TYPE
The last successfully parsed CFML construct was a CFPARAM tag occupying
document position (12:4) to (12:11).

This is the code I used:

  UPDATE Users
  SET FirstName='#FirstName#',
  MiddleInit='#MiddleInit#',
  LastName='#LastName#',
  UserName='#UserName#',
  Password='#Password#',
  UserEmail='#UserEmail#',
  PhoneHome='#PhoneHome#'
   WHERE UserID = #UserID#

 INSERT INTO Users(FirstName, MiddleInit, LastName,
   UserName, Password, UserEmail,
   PhoneHome)
 VALUES('#FirstName#','#MiddleInit#','#LastName#',
   '#UserName#','#Password#',
  '#UserEmail#','#PhoneHome#')

It didn't matter where in the above I put the code you sent me, I still got
the same message. When I changed "value" for "default", "name" or "type", I
got other error messages.

Can a effect take place without a tag?

2001-04-29 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

Can a effect take place without a tag? I've been asked to
proofread some problemmatic code which is inexplicably sending users to an error page.
However, before I begin to work out why this is happening, I need to work out how it
is happening, since I can't find a tag either within an else or elseif
clause, or elsewhere.

Problem with login page

2001-05-03 Thread Hubert Earl

hi. when i submit my login page i get this error message:

"
Error Diagnostic Information

An error occurred while evaluating the expression:

#Form.UserPassword#

Error near line 8, column 15.

Error resolving parameter FORM.USERPASSWORD

The specified form field cannot be found. This problem is very likely due to the fact
that you have misspelled the form field name.

The error occurred while processing an element with a general identifier of
(#Form.UserPassword#), occupying document position (8:14) to (8:32)."

This is the code I'm submitting, but darned if I could find anything wrong with it:

SELECT * FROM User
WHERE UserName = '#Form.UserName#' AND
 Password = '#Form.UserPassword#'

I've checked datasource name etc. Could anyone suggest what I may be overlooking?
Thanks.

What's the best way to deal with inexplicable error messages?

2001-05-04 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

What's the best way to deal with inexplicable error messages? Is it:
a. to slog away at the problem until the solution is found?
b. to do something else, then come back after a while?
c. to redo the code from scratch?

I'd appreciate words of wisdom from cooler, more experienced heads, since there *must*
be a way to avoid the enormous frustration I often feel while coding! :-)

Re: Problem with login page

2001-05-04 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi Jon et al,

Thanks for the response.

1. I decided to redo the login form and the application tag, and now I'm
getting this error message after entering my username and userpassword:

"Form Entries Incomplete or Invalid
One or more problems exist with the data you have entered.
This field must be filled before submission of form.

Use the Back button on your web browser to return to the previous page and
correct the listed problems."

But both username and userpassword fields *have* been filled in. Why is one
or both not being recognized?

2. If I type in my user name, and leave the password field blank, nothing
happens when I press the login button when, according to the cfinput
required code, I should get an error message warning me that I need to fill
in the password.

3. If I type in my password alone, I get the expected message generated by
a hidden input type value argument.

When remaking the login form, I dragged and dropped the names of the fields
from the database into studio's edit page using the database tab, to ensure
that I got all the names right. Below is A. the code for the login form,
and B. the code for the application.cfm tag. I'd appreciate any advice as
I'm totally stumped at this point.

A. clicologin.cfm

SELECT * FROM User
WHERE UserName = '#Form.UserName#'
 AND UserPassword = '#Form.UserPassword#'

Sorry, invalid username or password. Please click
  here to try again.

Re: What's the best way to deal with inexplicable error messages?

2001-05-04 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. Having just solved a problem largely due to my
taking some time away from it, I'm seeing the value of the recommendation
you made in the first paragraph of your email below. I discovered that the
problem wasn't at all the kind I'd been thinking it was, and taking 'time
out' allowed me to get a better perspective on it.

Hi,

How can I resolve links in Studio's help pages into web pages? Whenever I click on

the web page which appears:

"

Problem with page showing blank

2001-05-05 Thread Hubert Earl

hi,

i have a form, composed of both htm and cfm tags, which shows blank. if i rename it
with an htm extension, it appears. i guess that this indicates that the problem is in
the cfm code, but darned if i could see the problem! i'd appreciate any suggestions
as to what sort of things i should be checking for.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. Strangely enough, the source shows *none* of my

How to make sure that 'select', 'textarea' and 'checkbox' data fields are filled from the database when performing an update?

2001-05-12 Thread Hubert Earl

hi,

i'm working on a form which will either add to or update the columns of an Access
database. in order that the fields be filled with data already submitted if an update
is to be done, i'm using the 'value' attribute for text input fields. however, i
also have as input fields the 'select', 'textarea' and 'checkbox' data fields. how do
i ensure that those fields are filled with data from the database, in the case of an
update situation? the update will be performed when the form is passed to an action
file which will use sql to perform the update.

Below is the code i'm dealing with:

Access database question: how to structure a link between two tables

2001-05-14 Thread Hubert Earl

hi,

i've created a database to handle an insurance form which deals with the insurance of
money. it has a number of different tables such as 'cust', which lists details of
customers, 'prem', which lists details of where the money is stored, and 'safe' which
lists details of the safes in which the money is stored.

the tables 'safe' and 'prem' relate to each other, in that a premises may have one or
more safes, and one type of safe may be used in more than one premises. another way
of putting it is that each safe could have 1 or more premises that match to it & each
premises could have 1 or more safes that match to it, with a maximum number of 3 safes
or premises. what structure should i use for the link between the two tables?

sincerely,

Problem with CFStudio debugger

2001-02-28 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

I'm having problems getting CFStudio's debugger to work. Whenever I try to
use it to debug code, I get the following error message:

An error has occurred.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Problem with login code

2001-03-02 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi everyone,

The code below is a loginaction template. It's supposed to give an error
message if the wrong id or password is given on a login form, or if either
or both aren't given. Instead, it only gives the message if something is
missing. If something is wrong, it simply sends the user back to the login
page, with no error message. Is it possible to 'tweak' the code to get it
to work (and if so, can you please suggest how to do so), or is there
something so fundamentally wrong with it that it needs to be rewritten from
scratch?

Protecting an admin page

2001-03-07 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

I have an admin page which can be accessed thru a login page. However, as
it now stands, if someone were to learn bookmark that page, he or she could
return to it via the bookmark, rather than via the login page. How can I
ensure that someone could only access the admin page via the login page?

Sincerely,

Problem getting CFStudio 4.5.1 resource tab to reappear

2001-03-08 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

After pressing the F9 key to make everything to the left of the editor
section disappear, I can't get it to reappear. I've tried pressing F9
again, pressing the resource tab in the toolbar, and even uninstalling and
then reinstalling Studio. I'd appreciate any help, as I need to use the
missing section of the Studio window urgently.

Sincerly,

Problem calling data from a database

2001-03-14 Thread Hubert Earl

Hi,

I have a review form which is supposed to submit the request to a review
action file to call a single unapproved joke from a joke database for
approval or deletion. Instead, the following problems occur:

1. all unapproved jokes appear, except those submitted to the database
after the form and action file were created.
2. jokes submitted to the database after the form and action file were
created never appear.

I'd appreciate help with the code so that the following occur:

1. only one joke appears for review at any one time.
2. all unapproved jokes can be accessed for review.

The review form's code is:

SELECT
JokeID,
JokeTitle,
   Joke,
JokeDate,
FirstName,
LastName,
EmailAddress,
Approved
FROM WordJokes
WHERE Approved=0
ORDER BY JokeTitle

 Joke Review Form

Review Jokes Form

Please select joke JokeTitle from the contents
of the select boxes below. Please note you may only make one
selection
for review at any one time.

Total number of jokes in database is
#Review.recordcount#

#JokeTitle#

The review action file's code is unfinished, as I haven't yet coded the
approve or delete options but only the code to display the joke. It is:

 Review Jokes Action

This Form Approves or Deletes Submitted Jokes

SELECT
   JokeTitle,
   Joke,
JokeDate,
FirstName,
LastName,
EmailAddress,
Approved
FROM WordJokes
WHERE JokeId=#count2#
ORDER BY JokeTitle

#Joke#

<!--//

d=new Date();
document.write("The date and time are: "+ d.toLocaleString());

file://-->

I'd appreciate any assistance with this.

Hubert
