RE: What CMS do you use?

2003-10-21 Thread Kris Pilles
We use Ektron CMS 100/200 and it deos the job quite well.

We are using it on .NET but the CF support is there and I had initially
developed our application with CF.

If you want to see it in action just shoot me an off the list email

Not really looking for products you have seen but for a CMS you
use or your company uses and what you think of it. I know some are very
pricey, some don't run CF. Just looking for some ideas to be used where
I at now. Thanks.

Sounds like your client (desktop) machine can hit port 80 on that
system but your CF server (which is a different machine?) cannot?

confused as to how i can make the form on the remote server submit itself... or if
that is even possible?

Kris,

Not suere what you are after here. Do you mean you have a form in a browser
(i.e. client) that you have populated and you want to submit it to a server
automatically? If you just want to post to a server using cfhttp you can do
that without bothering with a form at all ... the handling server will see
the post submission and posted variables.

Cfhttp url=http://www.somedomain.com/someform.cfm; method=post
cfhttpparam type=FORMFIELD name=formField1
value=#somevariable1#
cfhttpparam type=FORMFIELD name=formField2
value=#somevariable2#
/CFHTTP

Of course - its up to you to handle the response by unpacking the
cfhttp.filecontent and header variables.

RE: CFHTTP to remotely submit form?

2003-08-28 Thread Kris Pilles
I have been half heartedly playing with manipulating the form, I found a
key that appears to be randomly genereated that is part of the form in a
hidden variable. I think it may just be easier for me to do this by
using javascript and frames... This way the form is actually loaded in a
frame and I populate the values and submit by populating via javascript
form the other frame...

Perhaps, but those sorts of things are usually easy to fool. You just
need to send the same information as a normal browser would send when
submitting the form.

I could never get CFREPORT to work for me, but this tech note explains
what needs to be done to correct THAT problem. 51249
Crystal Reports 9 no longer installs the crpe32.dll file in the
C:\Winnt\system32 directory; it installs the file in the C:\Program
Files\Common Files\Crystal Decisions\2.0\bin directory. ColdFusion
looks for this file in the C:\Winnt\system32 directory. If the wrong
version of the crpe32.dll is in theC:\Winnt\system32 directory, users
receive the error An unexpected error occurred while using the Crystal

Engine.Error number 525 occurred.

If you use Crystal Reports 9, copy the crpe32.dll file from the
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Crystal Decisions\2.0\bin directory to
the C:\Winnt\system32 directory.

I am about to create a web-based htaccess manager... that will allow my
client to create/delete htaccess areas on the server.

This is a Windows 2000 server... I already have a script that does this
nicely in perl on my Linux server.

Does anybody have any thoughts on how best to go about this?

Subject: CFMX Domain Misdirection

Heres the problem:

Working in a shared hosting environment, CFMX is running with IIS5. All
domains added to IIS have content stored remotely, and accessed via
SMB/CIFS.

Two domains in particular, when accessed, and refreshed repeatedly,
return the other domain's index.cfm. They are not both using the same
remote UNC path, as about 90% of the time they display their correct
content. Otherwise, I assure you they -are- setup correctly, and they
are the only two domains on the server experiencing these problems. I've
tried removing/readding the domains in IIS, rebooting, etc, the problem
persists.

So what I wanted to know is, has this been seen anywhere else? Anything
to do with caching, a strange bug perhaps fixed in an updater? If not,
then I guess the problem isnt with CFMX at all, and I need to look
elsewhere for a solution. Also, the pages are not identical, completely
different filesizes, no references anywhere in their code to the other
domains.

Thanks for any help.

I'm betting that what you are getting from the CFPOP isn't exactly the
same as whats in the DB. When you use CFPOP, the FROM field is usually
like this:

My Name [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And your DB probably has just:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Try comparing to see if the FROM field contains what is in the DB or
strip out the email from the FROM field and compare those. Just an idea.

All:

A client of mine (small, non-profit) would like to quickly add a
discussion forum to their website. It needs to support unlimited
threads, topics, messages, etc. It needs to support forum searches,
user profiles, moderation, limited HTML content. And, preferably, it
should be cheap (about $500) but doesn't have to be free.

I checked out FuseTalk and the pricing is way too prohibitive. Can
anyone make any other suggestions, preferably from personal experience?

As a MCAD.NET, I can safely recommend the majority of MS Press books
dealing with .NET, seeing as those are the only materials I used to
study for the exams. It seems as though you've made up your mind to go
with VB.NET, but I would strongly encourage you learning C# instead.

Also, Apress has some incredible advanced .NET books out (COM and .NET
Interoperability, Advanced .NET Remoting, etc) and some really cool ones
on the way (the Apress books usually deal with C#, though).

With the exception of the Design to Deployment books, STAY AWAY from
Wrox, as they try to cover too much info in too short of a book to
really grasp the concepts and methods of the .NET languages and
framework. MS Press books are incredible as beginner and intermediate
books.

Just my 3 cents,

Hello,

Odd spot to ask this question but here goes. I am CF user have been for
a few years now, but I wishing to branch out a little and widen my
knowledge to the use of asp.net. Not that I am leaving CF. I have been
looking on amazon for books and don't really see anything that stands
out to me. I have done just a little bit of .asp a few years back but
none since so I am looking for something that fits my lack of asp
knowledge. Right now ASP.NET Unleashed seems to be a good choice. I'll
definitely be heading the vb direction. Any recommendations from people

I've been gradually moving to DreamweaverMX as my web IDE... just

at the HTML source... WTF - what's all this garbage in here?

I opened the file up in CFstudio and it appears that dreamweaver took
the liberty of putting it's own tags in there. This is really bad for
me... how do I set dreamweaver to save ONLY the code I've written in

converted a simple xfa variable into:

I have a couple of sites hosted at www.readyhosting.com. Their CF
servers have been down more than not in the past few days, with no
responses from their tech support. Calling them get's me put onto a
hold queue for an extended period.

So, I'm looking for alternatives that offer similar features for a
similar price. Specifically they offer 500MB storage, Unlimited DSNs
(though I only need 3 or 4) and Cold Fusion services for $99 US per
year. The downside is that they only support CF 4.5, but I can live
with that if needed.

Any suggestions for something comparable - I would prefer CF5.0 but can
live with 4.5. If it helps any, one of the sites is a charitable,
non-profit organization.

Thanks for any tips.

prevents a lot of problems with users double-clicking. Their reporting
tools are good, and I've been happy with their support when I've had a
problem (the trouble was with an account number between the processor
and the bank getting screwed up).

Also, once you take into account the per-transaction charge, they aren't
that expensive.

I don't work for them--I'm just a satisfied customer. If you search the

Subject: Re: CF - PHP comparisons?

http://php.weblogs.com/php_vs_cold_fusion

This is a pretty good comparison, though it is kind of old. Many of
the things they say are lacking in CF are now in CFMX (like
user-defined
functions) and the same might be true of PHP.

The main difference to me is speed:
-CF is faster and easier to developer, (which could lower development
costs to your client.) -PHP compiles and runs faster (which could lower

hardware costs.)

Respectfully, I think that's a terrible comparison. That comparison is
obviously of CF 4.5 vs PHP!! User-defined functions have been available
since CF 5, and the enhanced feature set and performance of CF 5, let
alone
CFMX, is enough to antiquate this article. The article you mention to
still
refers to Allaire, which was bought by Macromedia almost two years ago!
In
fairness, PHP may have grown in parallel with CF over the 3 years since
that
article, but I doubt it's as rich as CFMX.

For a better refence, try the following two links to get started (watch
for
wrapping):

1. Ben Forta's site: http://www.forta.com/cf/
2. Ben's article on CF vs. free technologies entitled But It's Free!

Subject: CFFile???

Ok I CFMX is telling me that:

The value of the attribute source, which is currently
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\wand\datafiles\internal7\BOCES2003025317.txt,
is invalid.
But, if I go to the server and copy and paste the above sting... it
takes me directly to my file?

Any ideas???

Please help

I know there is an enormous anti-MS sentiment here, but I'm curious is
anyone as installed the .NET framework on the same box running CFMX. If
so, how was performance affected? I've always done one or the other, but
I'm thinking of combining them both, although I can foresee conflict out
the arse. Any thoughts? War stories? Recommendations?

I suppose that depends on what language you want the code in, what
platform, what features, etc.

I know I wrote a web link mapper (built a map of all the links in a
site) in Perl in a couple of hours. I also wrote a doohicky that would
scan a site for given text mining /n/ layers deep etc. and it didn't
take too much longer, as I recall. Of course, I don't have the code for
either anymore.
:-)

Can you be more specific about what you're trying to do? Maybe someone

What do you mean by search engine spider (just to make sure we are all

I am guessing you want to point a spider at a particular website, and
get back all the links from that page. Then point to each linked page
and get back all links from it, continuing until you run out of links?

If by 'index the links' you mean generate a list of them, it seems to me
the following would work pretty well.

Create an empty array. Populate the first entry with your starting URL.
Set a counter 'count' to 1.

loop while count is less than or equal to the arraylen:
cfhttp the url in the array at index count
Grab all the links.
loop over the links:
if the link does not exist in the array, add it.
/loop over links
increment the counter
/loop over array

Output the links.

If you write good modular code (especially where it grabs the links) you
can edit it later to do whatever processing or searching you want.

I know it's not code, but at least it should get you started should you
not find what you want ready-made.

If you want more help, feel free to contact me off-list (unless others
are interested in this thing).

AOL has their own internal RBL and uses their own rules. If you are
sending alot of email across their network you should speak with them
about being whitelisted. They may be enforcing rDNS, some anti-spam
efforts do this. They probably have other criteria as well. Most of the
AOL delivery problems that we have had in the past were just related to
a few really slow relays that held the mail for a few hours before
spitting it back out.

Oh, if they are rejecting based on a non-matching rDNS, they should be
doing it at the connection and not even accepting the mail. I would be
very surprised to hear that it was really being sent to /dev/null.

 | SMTP-AUTH was. As far as I can tell from RFC 2554 SMTP-AUTH really

 | I see your point, however, in my own case as a email
 hosting provider, I
 have
 | the settings set to enable SMTP AUTH, which is what you
 mean by doing the

 in-addr-arpa record
 in
 | DNS that takes care of it. That is just another task in
 hosting email
 domains.
 | In fact I use a script that takes care of all this when
 adding a new domain.
 | If you were an ISP or hosting provider, you would be
 aware of the constant
 | attacks by others trying to spoof one of your hosted
 addresses, including
 virus
 | attacks such as the Klez Virus, which are all turned away
 at the server.
 | That is my story, and I am sticking to it! :-)

What do you have your Max Recpt set for?

I think from others AOL will refuse if you try and deliver more
than 10 in a single connection.

Try delivering a single email and see if that gets through.

That's what I went to. I found just blasting out the mail results in a
few getting thru, then the sender is blocked for an indeterminate (but
fairly short) period of time.

I have a client that's a medical association. They have a large member
mailing list with a TON of AOL addresses. I built a mailer that loops
over a query and sends an individual email to each recipient AND
throttles down the speed of the operation, so as not to flood my mail
queue with recipients, or trigger whatever floodgate-alert AOL has in
place. Uses cfmail, its query parameter and startrow/maxrows parms.

The safe speed I found is disgustingly slow. 10 messages every 17
seconds, and it was important to tie in my mail spool interval (cf
admin) to the job. I have a 15 second interval there, so the throttling
never doubles up two loads of mail in the queue. Also related is how
fast your mail server can send the messages once they arrive in that
queue.

I also found this to be an issue with msn/hotmail. Throttling the mail
solves the problem.

You can probably go faster than 10 every 17 secs. Like I said...
Disgustingly slow. I just was charged with a guaranteed safe speed and
that's what I eventually settled on. Would love to hear any specifics
from anyone else with experience on this.

Howie did to you) that they don't generally bounce the e-mails, so
the sender has no way of knowing what the problem is so they may
rectify it, or even if there is a problem on his/her end and that the

That said, I do have an AOL account which I use for testing web

feed direct from the (a) source?

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and would be nice if it integrated easily with CF (to
 kinda bring
this question a little bit on topic) :)

Strategy and options depends quite a bit on the usage pattern and the
financial room. I will just presume it is for nearest outlet matching
 for now.

If it is for the occasional lookup, I am sure there are webservices
where you can pay per hit. Easy and all the database maintenance is
done for you by the remote partner. But it might be a bit clumsy if
you get back a long list of ZIP codes that you then have to match
against your own database of outlets. And if you get a lot of hits,
paying per hit might not be the best model.

Another option would be to buy a ZIP database with subscriptions for
updates and a bunch of tags for running queries on them. But again, it

might be a bit clumsy if you want to match those results with another
 database of outlets.

The last option is to buy the ZIP database and built your own search
system for it. It really isn't that hard to make the database do
distance calculations based on lat/lon pairs, and unless you have a
very special set of datapoints using a smart algorithm and some
 indexing will
make it very fast, especially since you can do the outlet matching in
 the database as well.

I would probably go for option 3, unless there is a business
 reason for
doing number 1. Let me know if you want some code for option 3.

Subject: Looking for CFMX Shared-Hosting Recommendations

Hi

I am looking for some current CFMX shared-hosting experience (if any is
available).

For a client who is growing -- will start with shared-hosting and
migrate to dedicated servers within 1 year.

Custom content management system that needs access to most CF features
(No crippled features/tags). Need ability to do file/image uploads,
cfcontent, cffile, cfschedule, etc.

Periodic mailings (non-spam), so need email capacity -- will use
scheduled-task batches at first, migrating to a dedicated mail server
if necessary.

Moderate DB requirements, SQL-Server or equivalent

CFMX platform - no preference

B2B site -- uptime/availability crucial.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Dick
