Really? Now you're REALLY going to quit the list? Sorry, I couldn't resist.
I'm sorry, Michael, for your predicament, really I am, but why do you insist
on posting about it here. Do you think that is going to engender some legal
advise? Ok, here's some legal advice - get a lawyer and stop posting here.
Every time you post you open yourself to further legal attacks. Do yourself
a favor if you are capable of listening to reason please stop posting here
for your own good. So many here have ernestly suggested this course and yet
you keep posting. Why? Is it an obsessive addiction to post, or is it
because you feel like by doing so you will get someone to offer help? As I
indicated before, I never post here because I rarely see much going on, but
this particular thread seems to be immortal, and it's not just your fault,
but all of ours. On the other hand it is also entertaining, albeit in a
sick highway-accident kind of way. I hope it ends up just to a fender
bender in the end and no one gets seriously hurt. Lawyer up, Michael, try
the Legal Aid Society if you can't afford one on your own, they will do
stuff pro-bono...

Re: Moving to DC

2010-11-04 Thread Levi Wallach

Hi Jason,

As people have mentioned, there are many areas in and around Washington DC.
Like many urban metro areas, there are distinct characters to different
neighborhoods and it would be really hard to give you a comprehensive list
of those here. I'll recommend a site I've found to be pretty useful in that
it's geared towards discussions about particular neighborhoods. Lots of
discussions already enough to make your head spin!

http://www.city-data.com/forum/washington-dc-suburbs-maryland/ for Maryland
suburbs

http://www.city-data.com/forum/northern-virginia/ for Virginia Suburbs

http://www.city-data.com/forum/washington-dc/ for DC propper

Other than that, you might try looking up the Washingtonian Magazine to see
if they have some articles archived or you might even be able to buy a past
issue that details one of their best neighborhoods pieces that they do
every years.

As folks have mentioned, DC itself will be the priciest, at least in the
more safe parts. Generally you want to look in the Northwest section of
the city - all addresses will have NW. You could certainly find things in
parts of NE that are livable, but they probably will have somewhat higher
crime figures. DC is great if you don't want to deal with a lot of driving,
but so is Arlington and Alexandria which are both on the Metro and parts of
both are pretty walkable. Other areas are on the Metro as well, but may not
be as walkable except if you live in a fairly small area near their
downtowns.

If walking isn't a concern, than you have a lot to pick from, except that I
would urge you to not make a final decision until you have a good idea where
you and your spouse will be working. As you may or may not have heard,
traffic in the area can be pretty horrible and commutes of well over an hour
each way (by car) are common. So optimally you want to do as much planning
as possible when it comes to finding something near where you work. While
there are lots of jobs in DC itself, there are also a ton in the suburbs due
to many gov't contracting facilities being pushed out for lack of space, or
just companies that have located further out of town so as not to
pay exorbitant rent.

As far as salaries, I couldn't tell you offhand since it's been many years
since I've done Cold Fusion, but I'm guessing you could probably get
anywhere from $60K to $100K++ depending on your experience level, degrees,
etc.

There are lots of beautiful neighborhoods but along with the higher
salaries, the prices of homes are a lot higher hear than in many areas of
the country. Generally it's going to be hard to find a decent single family
home for much under $300K unless you go pretty far out (ie 30+ miles from DC
or are in a less desirable neighborhood in the city (or one of the closer
burbs).

Hope this helps!

RE: Sr. ColdFusion Software Engineer Needed - Charlotte, NC

2007-08-27 Thread Levi Wallach
It may not be specifically applicable to the job in terms of skills/knowledge
directly relating to what you are going to be doing, but if it is, they will
usually say degree in related field. Often what I've seen is 4-year degree in
applicable field, or equivalent experience. For some, having a formal
education that involves programming methodologies is viewed as having a good
foundation in theory that will help. Perhaps some also consider the mere fact
of completing a 4-year degree an example of determination, the ability to stick
with something for an extended period, yatta yatta. I think most of us would
agree that people can be extremely successful without a degree, at least in
some environments. These days, though, a very large percentage of the public
gets such degrees, and so I don't think it's necessarily a huge thing to ask.
Even for those who never got a degree initially because perhaps they were too
busy becoming successful already, many of these people go back and get a degree
by taking classes at night or on the weekend. Yes, it's an added burden at
that point, but it also shows that you are willing to devote extra time to show
people you can commit to this type of certification, whether that
certification will actually make you better at your job or not...

Well, I haven't seen it much, but then again, I don't have one, so
perhaps I just subconsciously passed them over. :)

IMHO, asking for a degree for a programmer is not worth anything. If you
are 30 or older, what they were teaching in school when you were 20
isn't what is in use now. I mean, When was the last time you programed
an app in fortran? I mean, the only thing your degree shows at that
point is that you had rich parents who paid for your college, you worked
your way through college (and therefore, probably scraped by) or you
took out a student loan (and are probably now in debt from it).

I realize a college degree is important in some fields. Doctors,
Lawyers, Scientists, etc. Not a fast changing field like computer
programing.

But that's just me.

I forgot to mention this factor. Here in the DC area, lots of work is
contracting for the federal government and you get to charge the government
different rates based both on experience as well as education. So having a BA,
BS, MA, or MS will all get you slightly different rates in addition to the
number of years you've been working as a programmer...

Most big companies pay people based upon their education level combined with
other factors. So if you lack pieces of what is required then your pay
grade goes down. I would make a significant amount less if I took a full
time job without a 4 year degree(I have a 2 year one, but that is
worthless). Actually what is really messed up is since I am not getting a
degree that has engineer in the name of it, I will get offered less money
for a full time job even if I had a 4 year degree. I have no intentions of
working full time for them anyway, just using it as a pay check until I
finish this degree and will then move on.

RE: I need a host. Intermedia testimonials

2000-08-08 Thread Levi Wallach

I think a lot of these places may be great if you are paying for a dedicated
box, collocation, etc. But for us little guys who can only afford a
$50/month shared account, I think most of these hosts don't value our
business very much. I've had experience with three hosts so far and have
been dissatisfied with all of them at one time or another. Media3 was
impossible to reach on the phone and when I could reach them their demeanor
was pretty unprofessional. The last straw was when they stopped logging our
site via webtrends and despite notifying them several times of the problem,
they never did fix it. Infoquest was a lot better, but I had a problem with
slowness communicating with my data source, and again the tech support was
pretty unprofessional. I'm now with Interland, and though I like their
control panel because I can do most of what I need myself instead of relying
on their support people, I have also had issues with them. A few months ago
when trying to get a CFX tag installed, it took a few weeks before I could
finally got it resolved. I gave them an executable install file and instead
of installing it on their server, they just renamed it to .dll and used that
as the file! But it took forever to actually find out they had done that
because they only had (maybe still do) one person who was trusted with
installing CFX tags and configuring the CF Server! This for a company which
I'm sure has at least hundreds if not thousands of CF clients! They would
not let me speak to him, so I had to rely on half a dozen normal support
people half of whom failed to enter a trouble ticket, or call back despite
promises to the contrary. I ended up having to retrieve the dll's myself
and send them these because they said they could not run the executable on a
shared server. I've also been noticing a lot of slowness, and when
addressing this their only answer is "oh well, you are sharing a box with
250 other clients, so the only way to solve this is by moving to a
higher-level account." Gee, thanks a lot. Unfortunately, I think this may
be the only way. The other option I've been playing with is one where
several of us smaller folk could get together, pool our resources, and get a
dedicated/collocated box somewhere and only have to deal with maybe at most
a dozen other people sharing the box for about the same price that we would
be paying otherwise. I don't know, what do you think?

SQL Server 7 stored procedures driving me crazy!

2000-05-25 Thread Levi Wallach

So I thought I had solved my problem of consolidating a lot of my stored
procedures into one. I found you could specify a default value for a
parameter so in case one template didn't specify it, it wouldn't throw an
error. Great, that worked, but then I went to the template that did specify
it via an input parameter. Well, here's where my troubles began. I
actually had specified two parameters in the stored procedure, one after the
other, but in this particular template, I only needed to transfer a value
for one of them. Well, despite passing the value, it only used my default
value in the stored procedure. So, I switched the order of the variables in
the stored procedure and vuala! It seems that if the first one was not
found, it assumed the second one would not be found either! How does this
make sense??? Also one of my templates now simply does not work with this
stored procedure. It gives me a "Numeric value out of range" error, though
when I put the same exact sql statement into a query (this particular sql
statement actually doesn't use any input parameters), it works fine! Ugh!
It looks like I am going to have to go back and pass my own default values
in every template via cfprocparam tags, how annoying. Unless of course I've
completely missed something...

Smad, I hope you understand Chris was joking. Or at least giving you a
vague answer to match your question. The reason your question is so vague
is because it's not like there's one function or method to accomplish what
you want. I can try to give you a general idea of what one way of doing it
might be - you will have to set up a table of user preferences and make each
of the things you want the user to be able to control be a field. Then link
the user table to the preferences table via a foreign key in the preference
table. Then just build your cf pages to handle all the logic so that users
can change the row in the preference table that is linked to their userid,
and display everything based on queries to the preference table... But I
can't be more detailed then this without actually starting to build your
site for you! Seriously, I hope this gets you started.

RE: All the Info on O'Reilly's ColdFusion Book

2000-05-22 Thread Levi Wallach

I realized that, I just had not heard yet that Wrox was coming out with a CF
Book and so thought it would be something interesting for other Wrox fans
out there like myself... Actually, I'm not always happy with their stuff -
it seems to vary a lot in quality from book to book, but hey, I figure the
more the merrier - we already have awesome books out there from Forta (and
from what I've heard Denesh as well), so if Wrox falls short it would not be
a total loss, at least it pushes CF a little more forward. There really has
been a dearth in the number of CF books from different publishers until
fairly recently, so I figure the more books there are, the more other
programmers may be curious to take a look at what CF has to offer...

CFCACHE for only par of a page?

2000-05-20 Thread Levi Wallach

Ok, here's my dilemma. My site runs of of a very basic fusebox method - one
index page witha bunch of cfcases which include different files based on a
url variable. I would love to use cfcache for one of these pages which has
some intensive querying goin on, but when I put the cfcache tag in it, it
cache's the entire page, not just the part that's included. This is a
problem because other parts of the page need to be dynamic for user
authentication, etc. Any tips?

RE: Newbie Forta Question

2000-05-18 Thread Levi Wallach

Some of us had the pleasure of hearing Ben talk about CF last night at the
CFUGorama here in DC. He actually fielded a question from someone about
coming out with a 4.5 book and said that he was not planning to because of
all the other books he was working on and the fact that the changes between
4 and 4.5 are not huge - at least for the basics of CF. He also mentioned
something about how the next version of CF would require rewriting the book
from scratch, so it sounds like there are some big changes afoot for CF 5?

A newly renovated CF Site

2000-04-04 Thread Levi Wallach

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if you guys wouldn't mind checking out my renovated site,
dvdmon.com. I took a framed interface and converted into a table with
includes that I do based on a url variable and a BIG cfswitch/cfcase
structure. I am implementing a user account system with session variables
as well. Sometimes it runs fast, but at other times it is a dog and I am
wondering if it is my programming or something with my host - Interland.
But Interland claims that the site comes up fine for them internally. Could
it be network trafic? Could it be a problem with the SQL Server connection?
Hmmm, well, if you could play around with it and let me know if you
experience any sluggishness, that would be great. I have not made the site
public yet, so you will need to get to it via the following url:

http://www.dvdmon.com/indexnew.cfm

Thanks for your help!

This problem is addressed in Internet Explorer 41 Service Pack 1.
 To resolve
 this problem:

 1. Install Internet Explorer 41 Service Pack 1. To obtain
 Internet Explorer
41 Service Pack 1, please visit Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web site
 2. Start the Registry Editor
 3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \
 CurrentVersion
 \ InternetSettings
 4. Select New DWORD from the Edit menu
 5. Call it ReceiveTimeout with a data value of number of seconds*1000

For example, if you want the timeout duration to be 10 minutes, set the
 ReceiveTimeout data value to 60 (600 * 1000)

 Restart your computer

OT - tool for displaying site functionality/navigation?

2000-03-30 Thread Levi Wallach

Hey All,

I was wondering if you could help with a question that has come up in a
recent project. We are actually subs on this project, but the prime is
having a problems laying out to the client how the site is going to work
functionally/navigationally. They have written sitemaps and we have done
wireframes of many of the pages, but apparently the client still is having
problems. It's like they want to see the actual site built before they can
sign off on the design/functionality! Anyway, aside from maybe creating
clickable imagemaps that go from wireframe page to wireframe page, are any
of you familiar with some kind of tool that would let one quickly draw out
the flow of a site and actually create html or something like it that would
actually allow someone to emulate a potential users's experience? Thanks!

RE: Inline html editor

2000-03-28 Thread Levi Wallach

There is also a Java Applet which has a limited set of tools, but I don't
have the name of it in memory at the moment. As far as Word to html,
Andrew, you have gotten me thinking - despite word 2000 putting in all that
xml when you save "as html" couldn't you save to RFT and then use a custom
tag to covert it - I thought there were more than one out there which dealt
with RTF? Or perhaps they are perl scripts?

There are plenty of tags out there that will do the job, however the main
problem is that most use functions that will only owrk under Internet
Explorer. The method I find the best and I haven't been able to tidy it up
to make it into a tag as yet, is to use word and convert it into a html
 file.

Now the major problem here is that Word converts it into xml format so you
get a lot of junk that doesn't need to be there as well as not
 being bale to
control the font size etc. So the best method here is to tag what is not
needed using regexp. And using the regexp to change the font to friendly
fonts and sizes before saving it to the hard drive. At least this way you
can overcome the bigger corporations that have departments that
 dictate what
 browser you must use.

Otherwise I would also suggest ActiveEdit:-)

OK, here's a stupid idea. We've got a section on one of our sites where
people can update the content... sounds bad already yeah?

So this is for blocks of text etc. which is good because we don't
  have to do
all of the site content so we can dedicate our time to design
 etc. But the
content involves html, including fonts and breaks. So at the moment they
have to either write raw html, or use word to convert edited text
  to html -
then paste it into the textarea on an admin tool. Not good.

Question: does anyone know of a usefull 'inline' html editor that
  I can use
in a CF template?Whether it be a CF custom tag, or an applet or
  whatever...

  Otherwise, suggestions please?

  Cheers
