[sorta OT]help w/server-side doc generation
Hi CF'ers, This is a little long-winded and a little off topic, but any comments will be greatly appreciated. This is basically my daily report to my now disgruntled client ... who wants to see progress... at any cost. For my part, this is a biggole sanity check! ;) First, a little background information: This is a re-do of a Crystal Report that was accepted by the client last February (while I was on vacation... aahhh to be young again). Nearly 6 weeks passed before anyone (myself included ... shame on me) noticed that the 'EDITABLE' ms-word doc created by Crystal is not actually editable at all... it looks editable, smells editable, etc. but Crystal's export DLL's wrap every page into a fixed-size frame which does not flow... not to mention headers/footers get their own frames which get stepped on, etc... OK - 'nuff of that... and out with Crystal Reports. The document must be editable (DOC or RTF). PDF is 100% out of the question. Formatting of the document must be precise (I've already tried and dismissed various HTML-2-RTF conversion utilities for lack of formatting power...) Next, the document must be generated on the server (as a part of a larger CF application). Therefore, there will be no need for a client setup program, macros to install/run or any need to support the variety of desktop configurations in the field. Here's a three-tiered approach we will take to make the document generate from the web server: 1 - Run a copy of MS Word with an "auto-execute" macro on the server and insert the variable data (proposal fields in tailored training) into a Word template. This macro (template file) will be fed the active proposal data from either a standard ODBC (Open DataBase Connector) or from a delimited text file written to disk. Two potential problems here: 1) Performance & stability ... 2) Actually getting the data into Word 'on the fly' (this is currently an unknown). However, I have successfully tested a Cold Fusion provides functions which will launch an external application. If this works, no need to move onto tier-two... 2 - Write a stand-alone Visual Basic application (compiled) that essentially does the same thing described above. The major difference is that instead of using a template file to hold the boilerplate text, the Proposal document will be 'hard-wired' inside of the VB application. I will call this VB application using Cold Fusion, as mentioned above. And I will use standard ODBC drivers to pull the data directly from the database. I will need to feed this stand-alone VB program a parameter value to indicate which Proposal ID to use when searching the Access database. Again, if for whatever reason this approach fails, I will advance to tier number three... 3 - Write a set of Microsoft COM (Component Object Model) automation components to accomplish the goal of generating an editable proposal from the server on-the-fly. These will be written in Visual Basic. These automation objects will be compiled components very similar to the stand-alone VB application described in tier two. The primary difference is these components will be running as web services and thus will provide the greatest performance & stability. The downside is that this the most complex approach. The upside is that this is the most powerful & flexible approach. In the final analysis, we may not need this 'power & flexiblity', but then again, this may be the only approach that gets the job done. [note that I have someone to help with COM creation... if it comes to that] Thanks all, Mike __ Signup for the Fusion Authority news alert and keep up with the latest news in ColdFusion and related topics. http://www.fusionauthority.com/signup.cfm FAQ: http://www.thenetprofits.co.uk/coldfusion/faq Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/cf-talk@houseoffusion.com/ Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=lists
Re: Session variable question
Hey Ben, try running your server in single-threaded mode ... not to spark up the common session locking thread again, but Ben Forta states that it _may_ be a wash (in terms of processing time) when you compare a server running single-threaded vs. var & query locking, etc and as Dave Watts recently posted... and I paraphrase... 'everything has a price'. Anyhow, being the newbie that I am, I have been running a similar sales tool w/ about 100 users and I have yet to turn off single threading. But, the general consensus is LOCK EVERYTHING ALWAYS. Of course, you say "all vars are locked"... Final thought, when I was learning/testing cfid/cftoken I built some test fields into my login page to echo the id/tokens and rounded up some testers and banged away. It didn't break so I didn't fix it! :) Good luck, Mike Ben Densmore wrote: >There is no Proxy server, at the moment the IP addresses are static. Re: I need printable reports in browser from Oracle (must be an alter native to Crystal#!@?#!!?
Kevan, There's definitely stuff in the archive ... Cognos, et.al. I'm doing the 'roll your own' method with CF/Access (in my case) plus ActivePDF -- and it's turning out to be a good solution. Also, I have recently sumo-wrestled with Crystal Reports and the bugs and quirks are damn near intolerable!!! One of my recent projects, however, called for editable documents with pretty graphic footers & TOC's (tables of contents) and I didn't want head down the path of RTF graphics &/or COM objects -- so Crystal finally got the job done - after starting from scratch 3 or 4 times due to corrupt files, my own ignorance, etc. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any one-size-fits-all tools in the $1000 range and some of the other toolkits are very expensive. Re: Terms+Conditions for packaged web app
Hi Gyrus, I really like Alexander's suggestion. I too am building a similar template thingy for multimedia playback & 'parts-is-parts' training ... My company owns the engine and the clients (both company-wide and external) own the content. I never imagined it any other way. But then again, bosses are a funny breed ;) They're fully capable of making all kinds of deals that eschew intellectual property ownership (and whatever dividends/work may come) in favor of something that covers this month's bills. Or, in the case of my bosses... one has filed for patents while the other is fighting me tooth and nail right now over whether or not I should include application development terms and conditions in my work agreements for in-house clients. it's like helo... go figure. It's always best to own the code, or if you're the developer, to have a shiny set of cd's. crystal reports vs... ?
Hi Listers, I'm peering into my crystal snowball and I see dozens of complex reports in my near future. These reports need to be generated from dynamic (server-side) databases & whipped up to the user in an editable format (rtf/doc). I have used an open-source Perl script (now an open source kit available at http://search.cpan.org/search?dist=RTF-Writer). I need to forego the Perl solution because 1) My Perl skills (not there) & more important, 2) I hope to train someone to build reports in a Win environment w/familiar interface widgets, etc. What I'm looking for is anyone with some experiences generating reports on-the-fly ... which toolkits, how much$, pitfalls, etc. The target platform is a win2k-server-based intranet with a variety of possible datasources (access 2k, sql server 7, oracle, etc.) Finally, I need to make a decision, say, today or tomorrow, buy the software and produce, say, yesterday ;) Thanks! sql distinct
My distinct is no longer distinct after a simple, but major, change. SELECT DISTINCT CategoryIdTable.Category, CategoryIdTable.CategoryID, CourseTable.CategoryID, CourseTable.PartNumber FROM CategoryIdTable, CourseTable WHERE CategoryIdTable.CategoryID = CourseTable.CategoryID AND CourseTable.Lang LIKE '%#tmpLangCode#%' I changed my db to embed the language code in the part number (e.g. 1000-ABC-ES), (ES=espanol), instead of using an (existing) column (which was like EN,ES,PT,etc) SELECT DISTINCT CategoryIdTable.Category, CategoryIdTable.CategoryID, CourseTable.CategoryID, CourseTable.PartNumber FROM CategoryIdTable, CourseTable WHERE CategoryIdTable.CategoryID = CourseTable.CategoryID AND CourseTable.PartNumber LIKE '%#tmpLangCode#' So now I get MULTIPLE categories, instead of the DISTINCT list that was returned using the former sql statement. Also can anyone point me to a 'proper' SQL spec for Access 97 / ODBC driver. I'm using a generic Que book which says things like ... try INSTR() but if that doesn't work try INSTRING() or SUBSTR/SUBSTRING ... or maybe they won't work at all ;o) ... Re: proxy server and session variables
A quick fix _might_ be to force your server to single-threaded requests in your CF admin ... definitely a performance hit but (with my very limited cf experience) I understand that each page (template) will be fully locked until served ... maybe this'll buy you the time to plug in those cflock(s). This "generic cookie" (again, I may be exposing my ignorance) is actually 2 vars CFID & CFTOKEN. When using session.vars, CF sends the id & token to the client browser to uniquely identify the "session". If cookies are disabled on the client-side, then session management will fail UNLESS you append the id & token to the end of your URL for each page request --- a big security hole as crackers can hijack your session ... more below ... once upon a time...
.. a large hypothetical company in a hypothetical land on an imaginary planet issued the following memo... [begin hypothetical quote] What is a Control Environment and DMZ? Many of you have received a number of internal memos on the importance of a "control environment." This environment encompasses all elements of controlling business processes to assure integrity of our information and protection of our financial, physical and intellectual assets. In an effort to alleviate the potential risk of breaches to our network from the Internet, an enhanced Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is being developed as part of our control environment. The DMZ enables a company to offer secured services for a public Internet presence without compromising it's internal network, data, servers and systems. One component of a DMZ involves the use of firewalls that allow specific communications protocols to pass through its ports. As part of our DMZ control environment, all protocols utilized by specific application software will be tested and certified. How does Macromedia ColdFusion impact me? Macromedia ColdFusion is a web application server and programming framework that allows developers to create dynamic web-based applications with database connectivity. Although temporary use of Macromedia ColdFusion has been approved for existing systems within the DMZ, it has been proven to be a less secure environment under the companies protocol certification process. Beginning immediately, all new application development will require the use of certified software such as BroadVision. Pre-existing applications developed using ColdFusion will also require migration to certified development software by September 30, 2002. [end quote] .. a couple of comments/questions/thoughts for the list... · Is this double-speak? Are they saying no CF for public consumption (internet) or no CF at all? · The so-called 'dmz' is a farm of unix boxes/firewalls/security tools/etc. · It strikes me that many people on this list building "business" applications for "large" organizations... What kind of management edicts are you dealing with, if any? · Anyone working with BroadVision? Any truth to rumours of BroadVision closing up shop? checkboxes to action pages
Hi, I have a list of records (to delete) with checkboxes. i.e. user wants to delete recs & clicks checkbox Once the user clicks submit (Delete) Here's what I know: - How many items in the list - My 'index' to the list (using email address), which contains a subset of the query displayed in the form. Note that the number of email addresses I capture is equal to the total number of items in list. Here's what do not know: - How to match my form checkbox name (delChecked) to my data as described above! The parameters that get passed to my 'action page' reveal (to me, at least) a compressed list showing data (e.g. on,on,on) but how in the world do I match this to... item 1 checked, item 3 checked, item 5 checked Ain't learning great!
