jvm config questions -- stack size -- fatal error

2005-11-10 Thread jt
I am getting this message on a server and am wondering if anyone has seen it
before:

Fatal: Stack size too small. Use 'java -Xss' to increase default stack
size.

The coldfusionmx service crashes. I have to go in and manually kill the
service and restart it for the server to start working again.

I am on RHEL 3 running Apache 2.3 with CFMX 6.1

In the jvm parameters there is no stack size set at this time...I set it to
512M and the errors have continued.

Does anyone know what the default stack size is if it is not set explicitly?
Does the stack size get subtracted from the JVM heap size? Or are they 2
seperate allocations? If I set 1Gb for the heap and 512M for the stack, does
that mean CF will be using 1.5Gb?

Thanks!

Which version of MySQL? What was the GRANT statement used to give

cfmx keeps crashing! help!

2005-05-01 Thread jt
My server keeps crashing

I am running CFMX 6.1 on red hat enterprise linux 3 (RHEL3) with Apache.

ColdFusion seems to be stalling and taking Apache with it! Whenever CF
crashes, all sites on the server won't server pageseven if they
are php or just html. once I restart CF, everything comes back up just
fine.

I have an issue that repeats each time the server crashes; I see
this in the logs:

java.lang.RuntimeException: Request timed out waiting for an available
thread to run. You
may want to consider increasing the number of active threads in the thread pool.
at jrunx.scheduler.ThreadPool$Throttle.enter(ThreadPool.java:125)
at jrunx.scheduler.ThreadPool$ThreadThrottle.invokeRunnable
(ThreadPool.java:448)
at
jrunx.scheduler.ThreadPool$UpstreamMetrics.invokeRunnable(ThreadPool.java:294)
at jrunx.scheduler.WorkerThread.run(WorkerThread.java:66)

I googled this and found a macromedia technote - but after looking at
my xml config files I think it does not apply...not certain though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Re: A bit OT: MySQL resources?

2004-10-31 Thread JT News
Congrats on moving away from Access!

MySQL is great. If you have apache running, you can also run
phpMyAdmin -- it is a good web interface for MySQL.

If you need more functionality (stored procedures, triggers, etc.) I
would also recomend PostgreSQL. There are various front end tools for
this RDBMS as well.

It is a bit much to take in all at once I am sure, but once you start
getting used to either of these, you'll be glad you jumped ship and
started using a real database!

I haven't used Access in years!

It acts sort of like a constructor in more truly OOP languages.

Re: Logging all users actions...

2004-10-31 Thread JT News
Hello,

I am not sure what you are asking...

Are you asking if it is possible to log a user's actions in your
application in a DB?

OR

Are you asking if the DB logs all the database user actions (actions
of a user against tables, etc.) in the database somewhere?

If it is #1, then yes, you can...you need to insert a record for each
event you want logged. This could get pretty large though, depending
on how much activity your app gets. I am doing something similar to
this for a project I am working oin currently. A customer requirement
is to log all actions in the application in the Oracle DB, and provide
reports on it.

If it is #2, I would consult your RDBMS' documentation.

Hope that helps!

Re: Menu based in user roles using CF

2004-10-31 Thread JT News
Your talking about an ACL (access control list). Most mature
applications have this in one form or another. They typically involve
(in my experience) an access level that is numeric (say 10 for an
admin and 1 for guest) and involve evaluating the current user's
access to determine if a tab should be displayed or not.

psuedo code:

if ( user.access GTE 5 )
{
  // show tab
}

You also need to keep in mind that users can be curious and may try to
access a screen they are not suppossed to have access to. For this
reason, you also need to have some security on each screen to redirect
or display an access denied message if the unauthorized user happens
to arrive at the screen.

What are your concerns or areas you feel like you need help?

Hope that helps some...

You are mixing _javascript_ (client side) and CF (server side) here. This
simply won't work.

On your original question. This is a hard thing to do. Why do you need
it? What do you mean by How long someone has viewed a coldfusion page?
Start when it loads in the browser? What is defined by page?

If you really need to do this, I would create a JS function to calculate
this: initialize the time in onload and calculate the difference in
onunload of the body. Then send a request through a popup or hidden
frame (or even an img src) to the server.

you could set a session variable...

cfset session.timeFirstView = Now()

Then on an unload _javascript_ event...to detect when the page is left and
have that
trigger a second Now() CF function, then you'd have the start and end
time.

This kind of reminds me of ticket scalping!

Define this week :-)

This week of this year:
SELECTdatefld
FROMtable
WHERE EXTRACT(WEEK FROM datefld) = EXTRACT(WEEK FROM CURRENT_DATE)
AND
EXTRACT(YEAR FROM datefld) = EXTRACT(YEAR FROM CURRENT_DATE)
GROUP BY EXTRACT(DAY FROM datefld)

This week of each year:
SELECTdatefld
FROMtable
WHERE EXTRACT(WEEK FROM datefld) = EXTRACT(WEEK FROM CURRENT_DATE)
GROUP BY EXTRACT(DAY FROM datefld)

The last 7 days:
SELECTdatefld
FROMtable
WHERE datefld BETWEEN CURRENT_DATE AND CURRENT_DATE - INTERVAL 7 DAY
GROUP BY EXTRACT(DAY FROM datefld)

Be carefull though, a week doesn't start on the same day everywhere.

This did it.
cfset CURRENT_DATE = #now()#
cfset today = #now()#
cfset week = #week(today)#
cfset type = ww
!--- cfset lastweek =---
cfquery name=weekly datasource=#application.ds#
select * from Skills.completedtest
where week(date) = #week#-1
order by date,time
/cfquery

But I am confused . why doesnt cfset week = #week(today)# set this week to
this weeks number?
I had to use where week(date) = #week# -1
to get correct records

Oops, forgot the best part---

you can use

WHERE WEEK(BuyDate)

But be careful ---

WEEK(1998-01-01) AS WK, gives 0
WEEK(2000-12-31) AS WK1,gives 53

If you have an interactive db client, you might want to experiment.

about 1/3 way down the page, shows the types supported for EXTRACT

Week is not mentioned.

However, MySQL does support

mysql select WEEK('1998-02-20');

So that is likely the cause of confusion;

Well, you really shouldnt. You'll end up weighing down your database for
some minor benefits. But if you must.

use the 'readbinary' action for cfile to pull it into CF.

then pass that data to mySQL. Make sure the column you are going to store
the image is of type LONGBLOB.

But yeah, I recommend you just store a reference to the image in teh
database, rather than the image itself. Database are designed to serve up
data, not files.

Subject: RE: Web Service - this gets error . can anyone see why?

Mike,

Yes, enumeration is the problem here.

I have fixed this, and I am working to try and get this fix available to
customers.

I apologize for this bug.No test for a situation means it doesn't work.
Now we have an enumeration test. :-)

In the mean time, try this workaround:

cfscript

 ws = CreateObject(webservice,
http://www.webservicex.net/CurrencyConvertor.asmx?wsdl
http://www.webservicex.net/CurrencyConvertor.asmx?wsdl );

 enum = CreateObject(java, NET.webserviceX.www.Currency);

 argFrom = enum.fromString(GBP);

 argTo = enum.fromString(USD);

 result = ws.ConversionRate(argFrom, argTo);

/cfscript

The above workaround has one tricky problem however; you will need to copy
the class NET.webserviceX.www.Currency to a directory on the ColdFusion
classpath.I suggest C:\CFusionMX\wwwroot\WEB-INF\classes (adjust to your
installation directory).

Here is how to do that:

1. Run this page at least once and get the Class Not Found error.
2. Go to the CFusionMX/stubs directory and find the WS-
directory that has the NET sub directory.
3. Copy the NET directory to wwwroot/WEB-INF/class.
4. Delete all the .class files in the NET/webserviceX.www directory
EXCEPT Currency.class.

Sean Cornfield originally brought the issue up tome because of a thread on
CFGURU .Here is his web log posting on how to debug these issues:
http://www.corfield.org/blog/past/2004_01.html#000252
http://www.corfield.org/blog/past/2004_01.html#000252

Hope this helps.

Mike,

The issue you have is that Currency, which is the data type for
fromCurrency and toCurrency is an enumerated data type.

There is a issue with CF/Axis and enumerated types.I believe that
Macromedia is aware of it, but have no idea what the status is or if
there is a decent work around.

I've been trying to sort out an issue with an enumerated data type on a
web service I'm trying to access and as yet I haven't had been able to
get a solution, other than to hard/hand code the soap packet and pass it
via cfhttp to the webservice. Not a usable solution unfortunately.

The other solution that someone suggested was to import the web service
and rewrite it to accept strings/numerics and post it out to the actual
web service (I think I got that right).Again not really a usable
solution. Why should you have to rewrite someone else's web service...
:o{

If get a sensible solution, I would love to know!

Anyway, the resulting page give an error and I cant see why because

Here's the code that Dreamweaver wrote:

 cfinvoke

 cfinvokeargument name=fromCurrency value=GBP/

 cfinvokeargument name=toCurrency value=USD/

Which (I thought) should take the input value GBP and work out a
conversion
to USD, and return a variable #conversionRateRet#which will be a

such as 1.02, being the conversion rate.

 However here's what I get:

Huh?
If the 'fromCurrency line is correct, how come the next line isn't?

Subject: login management

On a similar topic to ongoing discussions...

I have a few different areas of my site that I only want registered
users to have access to.

1) I set up a session.allowed variable in my Application.cfm (defaulted
to 0) if the variable isn't already present. Code:

!--- set the default that a user has not been logged in ---
cfif not isdefined(session.allowed)
cflock name=setAllowed timeout=5
cfset session.allowed = 0
/cflock
/cfif

2) I set up switches in the necessary pages to show a login include if
the session.allowed var equalled 0. Code:

cfif session.allowed eq 0
login:form actionpage=reservation.cfm
cfelse
What's Here?
/cfif

3) I set up my check so that, if login was successful, the
session.allowed var is set to 1. Code:

cflock name=setAllowed timeout=5
cfset session.allowed = 1
/cflock

After a user logs in I see, using debugging, that the var is now set to
1. But, when I go to another page (within the site), I see that the var
is reset to 0. This shouldn't happen as the code in the App only sets to
0 if the var doesn't exist in the first place (see item 1 above for
code). Anyone have any ideas?

I think the problem you're encountering is that DaysInMonth() expects a

mis-interpretting

Try changing it to DaysInMonth(CreateDate(form.Year, form.Month, 1)) and
see if that works

Long live Java! If you go to macromedia.com, you
 will
see that they are very excited about CF MX, since
 j2EE
is the definitive back-end platform. Yada, yada...
 my
point is not to tout Java, but rather point out that
if you are a CF developer with absolutely NO Java
skills, then you are doing yourself a disservice.

Go to http://www.javaonline.org to take a
 crash-course
in Java (course is 6 weeks, under $100, and
 certified

 the

  Your resume will thank you.

Good luck with the job hunt!

SOT: FINALLY!!! It Arrived!

2002-09-11 Thread jt

It finally arrived today!!! I ordered one of Ben's new books, Reality
ColdFusion MX: Flash MX Integration, from Amazon on Aug 28th, and it just
arrived today!!!

I haven't had a chance to read much yet, but I skimmed the chapters and it
looks great. I especially love the fact that the book is not aimed at
beginners. I am sometimes tired of reading about how to use access DBs and
web dev basics for 95% of a book to get a little bit of the good stuff.
This book looks much better. It goes through the development methodolgy of
the projects and shows memos, specs, flow charts and the like...good
material.

Anyways, I look forward to going through the projects! Good work on the new
series.

I have some records that need to be updated to a database.
recordID is 37651
and this recordID has 3 Keywords: AAsian, AIndian, ABurma
My query outputs them as
37651 AAsian, AIndian, ABurma

I have to put AAsian, AIndian, ABurma as 3 separate records in one table
KeywordsAT
then put
recordID Keywords
37651 AAsian
37651 AIndian
37651 ABurma
into a join table which has recordID and Keywords as fields.

I know I have to loop thru the records somehow, but cannot work out how to
do it. (I'm pretty thick when it comes to looping)

Can anyone help me please

 1) yes, it's slow loading.
 2) i'm used to ctrl-shift-b for br tag. it took me forever to figure

it

puts the br, and then moves the cursor down to the next line :|
 3) no internal browser for preview. i only recently started using this in
Studio, more for javascript than cf pages...just to see if it will run
before even bothering to save it. kind of got used to that. unless I'm
missing it, there is no way to do that in DWMX.

I really wish that since MM had bothered to make a homesite/coder
'view',
that they would have kept the homesite shortcuts.

just my thoughts. i'm sure there will be more :)

Before to go back to Studio or HomeSite+, you should give a try and work
during a week or two with Dreamweaver MX.

Yes, it is slower than Homesite, but other than that, I personally won't go
back to CF Studio, all the features I like in CF Studio are available in
DWMX.
And in DWMX, by default, code hints work better and the syntax coloring is
cleaner.

My two cents.

Josh:

I'm about ready to go back to Studio 5...or even try Homesite+ (which I
understand is bundled on the Studio MX cd)...

my only concern is that eventually (i believe) MM will cease production of
HomeSite altogether, as it has with Studio, and Dreamweaver will be the only
alternative. May as well get used to it now I figure :|

RE: desperately seeking a Windows Type DHTML Tree

2002-09-03 Thread jt

Try this:

CF_dhtmlMenu

This is a cross-browser DHTML tree I wrote as a custom tag...

http://exciteworks.com/ec/tags.cfm

it doesn't allow multi levels yet though...that is coming!

Another great solution would be to use the tree component in Flash MX and do
some integreation...

What DB are you using?

I have some info on doing it with SQL Server and Stored Procs at my site:

http://exciteworks.com/ec/resources.cfm

Click on Presentations and you can download the source code.

RE: Blatant advertising: Two new CF books!

2002-08-27 Thread jt

Ben,

I ordered your book, Reality ColdFusion: Flash MX Integration last week
from amazon and it still hasn't shipped! They claim it still isn't
published and are saying that they don't expect it to be shipped until Sept.
9th.

Anything you can do to whip them into shape?

Can't wait for the book,

Josh

That book is basically done, and is about to go to print. Should be out
within a few weeks (I hope).

CF_BLATANT_ADVERTISING

This is blatant advertising, I admit it, but ... :-)

Two new CF books are out and shipping (despite Amazon.com still stating
not yet published and showing the wrong screenshot):

ColdFusion MX Web Application Construction Kit is the new revision of
the original and best-selling CF title. Besides lots of updates and
enhancements, new to this edition is coverage of CFC's, writing UDF's,
Flash Remoting basics (more coverage in the title below), use of
Dreamweaver MX, and more. Oh, and by popular demand (or complaint) the
reference appendixes are all back in actual print. The book is now 1500
pages, and was co-authored by Nate Weiss with additional content by Leon
Chalnick and Angela Buraglia. Book page is at
http://www.forta.com/books/0321125169/, and the direct link to
Amazon.com is
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0321125169/benfortascoldfusA/.

Reality ColdFusion: Flash MX Integration is the first title in my new
Reality ColdFusion series - a set of higher-end case-study based books
that walk through complete development efforts, from concept and
requirements to development and delivery. This title covers ColdFusion /
Flash integration and is authored by Dennis Baldwin, Randy Drisgill,
Derek Lu, and Matt Tatum. Applications created are a jukebox, an expense
reporting app, a mail client, and a chat system. Book page is at
http://www.forta.com/books/0321125150/, and the Amazon.com link is
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0321125150/benfortascoldfusA/.
(The next two books in this series will be on Intranets and Content
Management and J2EE Integration - stay tuned).

Enjoy!

is there any cool way to revert back to the way cf5
used to display debugging info @ the bottom of pages?

I mean, its like they took a huge step back in that department
and its now really strung out data.versus the old
way cf5 used to display the data at the bottom of pages.very neat
and concise...

RE: looping over lists and queries in cfscript

in CFMX can you use this syntax: Queryname.Record[i]?

I have tried it and it gives me errors.
(Of course, I am replacing queryname with a valid name of a query).

Any ideas?
