RE: A little off topic but I need help?

2000-10-06 Thread Dave Watts

Does the ability to install a Win98 partition and a Win2K
partition come with Win2K or do we need a third-party utility
   to do that?

You can simply install Win2K to a logical partition within an
extended partition, without getting any extra utilities. I think
that if you want to set up multiple primary partitions, so that
one OS can't directly see the other, which is my personal
preference, you'll need something like Partition Magic to create
 the multiple primary partitions.
...
You'll need to use what W2k refers to as a 'Basic' partition
and make sure it is formatted as FAT16 or FAT32, not NTFS.

Actually, if you keep Win2K (or NT for that matter) on its own partition,
you can use NTFS. I've set it up both within a logical partition and within
a separate primary partition, using NTFS every time.

You can simply install Win2K to a logical partition within an extended
partition, without getting any extra utilities. I think that if you want to
set up multiple primary partitions, so that one OS can't directly see the
other, which is my personal preference, you'll need something like Partition
Magic to create the multiple primary partitions.

You've hit it exactly on the head. That's what Win98 is for - and that's it.
It's an excellent platform for Quake 2, Half-Life, and all the wacky input
devices I like to use. Actually, though, most games run very well under
Win2K - the first "compatibility pack" for Win2K from Microsoft was simply
game optimization. Several games actually run quite a bit better under
Win2K.

RE: A little off topic but I need help?

2000-10-05 Thread Scott, Andrew

*LOL* Well I have news for you, this was never an upgrade. Windows 3.11 and
below relied on dos to run as does Windows95/98 in a way. So you can exit
out of windows and return back to the dos as you would any other
application.

Windows 95/98 however is installed to make it look like you have a new OS,
however it is still a glorified application designed to run over the top of
dos. But upgrading an application over its ownself, then yes I agree MS have
done very well with W2K! However there are still some problems with it, but
it still is much better work than the previous NT apps.

Not a first! I once upgraded from Dos 6.22 to Win 3.1 and that went
flawlessly!

Win2k is a close second :-)

Seriously, it's the best upgrade that MS has put out. We've upgraded
several machines here and they truly went flawlesly. And that's a first for
an MS upgrade here.

So its a direct upgrade and won't harm any of my other files? Also, I need
to use the full version right? The upgrade is only for NT users I believe.

What will happen if I install Win 2000 over Win 98 on my PC? Has anyone
done this?

Rich
