Just with FTP in general, since your using a firewall "we all do right LOL",
you might want to check and make sure you have passive FTP checked in your
client settings. Its a little checkbox in dreamweaver and other programs.
That might help. I also find that ftp over DSL just sucks and you end up
getting wacky connections so if your running over DSL and not cable that
could be the issue.

Question About xtreme-host.com WAS Best CF7 Hosting company

2006-11-14 Thread Sam Farmer
Dawn,

I use xtreme-host.com and am very happy with them.

However, do you have problems with keeping an FTP connection? Its my
one gripe but I'm unsure if its my software, ISP, etc or
xtreme-host.com.

Cheers,

Sam

They do MySQL and Cold Fusion Hosting for like $13.00 per month. That

Hi everyone, I've been looking for a managed dedicated server provider,
anyone have any suggestions? Crystaltech seems fine, but they're more
geared towards shared hosting (in my opinion anyways).

I've been looking at:

http://www.onlinecorp.com/dedicated.cfm
http://www.hostmysite.com/dedicated/

I'm not even sure what our load on the site will be, we need CF 7.02,
MySQL and MSSQL if possible and we need to be able to control
everything, which Hostmysite certainly seems to offer.

Just wondering if I'm missing another great company?

Check out Enterhost as well : http://enterhost.com

They don't offer "managed" hosting in the sense that you have to take
care of your own server patches and hotfixes, but they have good
support when you need it and have a solid infrastructure. I've been
very pleased with them.

My only beef is that they charge per database for MSSQL server space
after the first one. That considered, though, they still come out
ahead in price for features from most of the other hosts I've looked
at. They're a Windows-only host, though if you wanted Linux.

I can speak for HostMySite; they are good, especially since they take
Linux hosting seriously and you get a good deal more on Linux than on
Windows for the same price. They take CF really seriously and they
were willing to make security better when a few of us raised some
issues. Another popular host (I won't name it) was clueless about the
same security issues (confirmed with testing).

Well I can’t speak for Mr. Carluen’s experience with ViUX. My onw
experience is that I have never know the CF sever to go down. Once, the mail
server did go down. It was clearly posted on the status page and although they
did not offer an estimated down time, they were back up in about two hours.

The nature of “shared” hosting is that you can be affected by what the
other sites are doing. SO it is possible that Mr. Carluen’s sites were on a
server with a rogue site. But who knows.

I have always found their support team to be knowledgeable and helpful. But, I
must admit that I have never had a CF specific question to ask them.

 >They also have the following tags disabled:

Well yes and no. Yes, they did have these tags disabled but all the NEW servers
have ALL tags enabled except, CFExecute and CFRegistry. All the old servers are
currently being migrated.

I can’t speak for HostMySite either, but I do know that have a pretty good
reputation and some snazzy print ads. For me my experience with ViUX has been
good and so they keep my business.

> With Viux, you'll definite get what you'd pay for.

Well, I would agree, however, for me that that has always been a good thing.

PS: Yes ViUX does host ColdFusion but it is an option on any of their plans
under the new plans structure.

I used Viux, but their CF servers intermittently fails... and their tech

They also have the following tags disabled:
CFContent
CFDirectory
CFExecute
CFFTP
CFIndex
CFRegistry
CFSchedule

I have moved several CF-related sites to HostMySite since. With Viux,
you'll definite get what you'd pay for.

I never trust those customer reviews on company sites, either. Sorry Russ,
but I'm a very skeptical person. I have worked for two companies (non-IT

how do I know it's not a direct line into the company's sales office? It

I wholeheartedly agree with you here. I just feel it's best to try a host
out for a while. 3rd party reviews are very iffy, and it's usually not hard
to try a host and move away later if necessary.

Okay... It seems the best choice for a shared, cheap and reliable hosting
company is Crystal Tech while I should wonder about the international
complications. About the reviews, you know I think the best review is here in
CF-Talk. http://www.cfmxhosting.co.uk looks very great but I need MSSQL and 10
pounds/month for the MSSQL plus the 119 pounds /yearly cost (the starter plan +
MSSQL meets my needs) is a little more than my customers are ready to pay. But
as I said it looks very very good.
But about Viux nobody said bad or good things. The plans look very good but I
really count on your reviews.

RE: Best CF7 Hosting company

2006-11-03 Thread Snake
You can always Check the reviewers web site and see if it is legit, call the
phone number on the web site and speak to the person who wrote the review if
you don’t want to email them.
Obviously in the case of bens site, they may use hotmail or other free
addresses, but for the customer quotes we put on our own web site we have
specifically asked the customers if they mind being contacted, abd most of
them say no they do not mind, and these are the ones we put online, so any
potential customer can get a personal reference if they want.
At the end of the day, if your looking for CHEAP HOSTING then your not going
to care about such things, but if your looking for a good reliable host with
great customer support and CF knowledge, you have to put a bit of effort in
find out about them.

My only suggestion would be, if you only need CF then go to a host that
specialises in CF a sthey will most likely have the best support and
knoeldge, not a generic host who just has it installed on their servers.

That could be easily faked too. I'm not saying you're company is doing
this, Russ, but imagine how easy it would be to have your employees setup
email address with various free services, submit reviews, and then respond
to any questions as if you're a legitimate customer. Heck, if they wanted
to be fancy, they could build a fully automated system to handle all this.
In short order you could have thousands of 'real'
reviews up there, and all requests for comments would be forwarded to an
employee for response. To make it seem more legit, you could even
intersperse a few 3 or 4 star reviews (things like "Good service, but they
don't offer Linux"). I don't think many companies would do such things, but
look at Yahoo movies, or Amazon's book reviews. There have been well
publicized cases of publishers submitting fake reviews to try to sell more
tickets/books.

Again, I don't know the best answer for this problem. I'm just saying, take
those reviews with a grain of salt.

I remember that they had even provided some BETA CFMX stuff as test

Identity theft for CC and they were not helpful.

And if you are not in USA as a company, it is not easy to follow these

Great. So it seems they provide a good windows+CF hosting. Does CT provide CF
7.0.2? Does they provide Flex with their CF packages? Plus do they add ASP
support to my CF package? I sent those questions to their support email but I

I used to use this host for my blog and cfquickdocs. My general consensus,
you get what you pay for. 90% of the time it was fine, very little
problems. But the rest of the time my sites were down with 0 explanation
from the guy that runs it. And yes, it appeared that the whole thing is run
by one guy. He seemed to try hard to offer good support, but a few times
the site was down for a few hours and he was no where to be found. Later
he'd fixed it, and only offer an apology with no explanation, and no coupons
to cover the down time. All that said, it's DANG cheap, so if that's what
you need, and you can deal with 90% uptime, I'd say go for it. You might
get lucky and never have any problems. :)

By the way, we all love Ben, but I'd not take his list as a good source of
host ratings. Use it as a tool to find hosts, but personally I didn't take
the ratings very seriously. If I ran a large hosting company, I could
submit my company and then ask all my employees to go give us a good rating.
I don't know how I'd do the list differently, but it has it's problems.

Thanks Munson. Very helpful answer. It seems as a cheap server it works
fine. But infact I will need more than one shared hosting in the future
and I prefer them to be from one company and 90% won't be enough for
some of them.
Any opinion about the other two? Crystal Tech vs Viux? Which one do you
choose?
Thanks

I've never used either of them. As someone else stated (maybe in a
different thread?), the problem with these questions is that most of us
have only use a handful of hosts. Personally, my main deciding factor
for a hosting company is whether or not they offer Linux hosting. That
automatically throws out 90% of the ColdFusion hosts on the market.
However, I've tried most of the Linux hosts, and of those I liked
HostMySite for shared hosting, and Vivio for VPS (because it's cheaper
than HMS).

Oh, and one annoying thing about HMS, I left them a few months ago (I
was happy with the service, but Vivio's VPS is the same price as HMS's
cheapest shared account), and since then they keep spamming me with
messages asking if I want to reinstate my account with them. That has
NEVER happened to me before, and I think it's extremely poor taste.

Technically I would prefer CT which I am "personally" also working with

I also always wondered why dedicated servers in Europe are cheaper than

Re: Best CF7 Hosting company

2006-11-03 Thread Ali Majdzadeh
I am now down to Three Hosting Companies. Please help me choose one.

Crystal Tech ( http://www.crystaltech.com )
Looks very great. But the only problem is when you choose Coldfusion you have
only coldfusion and if one part is in ASP you don't have ASP support. Ben Forta
gave it 4/5. Good rating!

Viux ( http://hosting.viux.com )
Looks good but not famous as Crystal Tech while its prices are lower than
Crystal Tech. Ben Forta didn't give it any star!

Xtreme-host ( http://xtreme-host.com/ )
Very nice website but just one person recommended it plus I couldn't find it in
Ben Forta's lis at http://www.forta.com/cf/isp/. It has 100MB hosting too and
it is great cause finding a low space CF hosting with such a low price is very
hard.

Please help me find out which one IS the best. It is very critical and as you
know maintenance, stability and FAST CUSTOMER SUPPORT are very important for a
hosting. In your experiences which one was good enough and which one was not.

Thanks

Not always. :)

If you are a developer who does not have anytime to deal with server
problems, a shared or "managed" dedicated server would be a good idea.

There are also costs for a "self" host. This would be also a real pain.

Just My 2 Cents ...

2006-11-02 Thread John Morgan
I use ViUX, I have six sites with them. There just recently restructured their
plans a bit, so I am not entirely familiar with the new plans. However, they
have both Windows and Linux servers. There support has been awesome and quick,
when needed which is not much. Lots of features and lots of control, more than
on any other shared plan that I have seen.

+1

I wish more storage space was available for the price, but not enough to move.

(I am thinking about hosting elsewhere, like godaddy for $3.19/mo for
5GB of space, just for media/image files)

I'll second CT. Great customer service, reliability, etc. For a shared
host, they have been the best out of the half dozen I've tried out.
