Although I attended CFUN last year (and it was definitely value for money),
lets not forget, for those of us living in England, the price of the flight
etc. also needs to be factored in to the overall price of attending (unless
of course we get a discount :) )

have MGM or Universal Studios to themselves on of the nights!

What about training courses? Cheaper? More expensive? TeraTech courses
are about $350 a day (very reasonable). Figleaf? About $500 a day. I
searched around and most ColdFusion training seems to range from $400
upward. Hal's Mach II course is about $600 a day (and well worth it,
BTW).

IMHO, Figleaf is worth every damned penny and then some. When I was just
starting out in '97 - '98, I had Steve Drucker, Charlie Aerhart, Simon
Horowith and Dave Watts as instructors for a wide range of courses. I've
never taken a class at TeraTech, but if I were in DC to take another,
I'd go to FigLeaf. I took a class at FigLeaf called CF Top Gun that
taught some cool techniques that some longtime developers don't even
think to use today!

I used the regular registration price of $1100. About 1/2 of the
conference is CF-related, so I divided $1100 by 1.5 to get $725. The
math might be a little fuzzy, but you get the drift. I'd go to MAX over

have MGM or Universal Studios to themselves on of the nights!

Just my unsolicited .02.

I used the regular registration price of $1100. About 1/2 of the
 conference is CF-related, so I divided $1100 by 1.5 to get $725.

All the prices I quoted were early birds which makes MAX about $300 a
day for all content. Bear in mind that parts of CFUN / CFUNITED also
cover Flash / Flex so it isn't a 100% CF conference either. And, given
the number of tracks at MAX, you can actually attend all CF, all the
time which makes your 1/2 argument somewhat weaker.

But thanx for adding MAX to the comparison - I was looking mostly at
non-CF conferences by way of comparison.

As for Figleaf, good to hear chops for them - I have no point of
reference to compare them since I haven't attended their courses (nor
TeraTech's). FWIW, I think $500 / day for training is a good deal
anyway.

I don't have a problem at all with CFUNITED's increased price. Last
year it was overcrowded and too short... So now it's a day longer, which
immediately adds 50% to the cost.

And I think from the surveys last year, a lot of people were hoping to
see some kind of food and drinks available in the morning... coffee,
donuts, juice, etc... maybe they'll tack that on too.

CFUN at $250 was a great deal. CFUNITED at $450 is still gonna be a
great deal.

They've extended the programs, doubled up a number of the speakers,
added a day and moved to a facility large enough to hold the number of
people anticipated to attend. If you'll remeber, many of the talks
were shoving room only if you were less than 5 minutes early to the
presentation.

I also seem to recall last year seeing something about scholarships
and other breaks. While I don't plan on taking advantage of that, if
you're interested and truly strapped for cash you might look at that
route.

The conference is well worth the money and time to go IMO.

Granted there isn't information listed on it yet, but I guessing most everyone

not, just being a member to your local CFUG will also get you a break.

All,

While I do admit to being a little surprised prices went up as much as
they did, it won't stop me from going.

I think it may hurt attendance more that it isn't over a weekend
anymore. Everyone felt that it needed to be three days, none of the
presentations were repeated and we all missed speakers that we wanted
to hear.

The discounts are posted on the site:

10% off Corporate Group Rate - You must have three or more people in
your group. A coupon code must be assigned to you before registering.

$50 off regular price if you belong to a CFUG or if you have attended
any previous CFUN conference

Government rate is 15% off

Student rate is $199

CF-Community is a perfect place to put messages, like this one, that
concern CF but are not of a technical nature.

If you post a message like this over there, you're likely to get a

No, but you seem to just complain about ColdFusion and
ColdFusion-related things. Instead of complaining that you can't
afford a few hundred dollars to improve your skills (really?) you come
out, guns blazing, implying the conference organizers are insane.

Let's look at those prices...

CFUNITED is a three day conference so the early bird price is $150 a
day and it offers seven tracks. Last year about 600 people attended
and the overall feedback from them was More! More! More! - more
space, more speakers, more topics. Even if you turn up on the day,
it's less than $300 a day.

The early bird price for Software Development West is over $530 a day.
php{con was nearly $500 a day (early bird). JavaOne is about $400 a
day I think. ASP.NET Connections is around $350 a day (early bird). So
it doesn't seem to matter whether we're talking 'free' technology or
'proprietary'.

What about training courses? Cheaper? More expensive? TeraTech courses

The price wasn't even a blip on the scale as far as I was concerned -
last year's price was just ridiculously low, in my opinion - so the
only idea I had on the matter was that it's a very reasonable
package.

Re: CFUNITED? What's the deal??

2005-01-23 Thread Will Tomlinson
No, but you seem to just complain about ColdFusion and
ColdFusion-related things. Instead of complaining that you can't
afford a few hundred dollars to improve your skills (really?) you
 come
out, guns blazing, implying the conference organizers are insane.

I agree it looks like it's well worth the price. I hadn't read the fine print
on the bottom of the page about the improvements to the event. I thought it was
great last year, and sounds like it'll be better this year.

Man, I invest so much in what I do, and I don't mind because to me, CF is an
adrenaline rush. It's just that to a small-timer like me, $450 is a good chunk
of change. Now I realize it will be $400 since I attended last year, and that
helps. I'm just gonna have to hunker down and make some extra $$$ for this.

Thank you for the info!

Will

I have never been to any of these meetings, just wondering..

1. How many of these events are there? Names and locations?
2. Did CFFUN change Names to CFUNITED?

Thanks,

I think the biggest thing that IRKED me about last year was they only gave
Forta 45 minutes to speak!

The man can talk about the subject of CF for 24 hours STRAIGHT! He got only 45
minutes?

Better be longer this year.

RE: CFUNITED? What's the deal??

2005-01-23 Thread Ben Forta
Irked, huh? Thanks man. :-)

Actually, to be very fair to Mike and his crew, part of the problem was I
could not be their Saturday and the earliest flight Sunday was not as early
as I'd have liked. So while I'd have loved to have more time, the fact that
I showed up a few hours before CFUN ended did not help.

But, with non weekend dates this year ... who knows.

conference in the past I believe - anyone got any details of that?

Re: CFUNITED? What's the deal??

2005-01-23 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
(blushing) Sean, plugging my pet project... how sweet of you!

Yeah, I'm trying to assemble interest: speakers, attendees, sponsors.
It's a dream, but I've actually had some positive response thus far.
Positive, but limited. We've got a really strong CF community here, as
Ben can attest. Ben and Hal Helms have both been here, probably among
others of note in the ranks. So we've got enough local audience to put
something together, I just want it to be somewhat more than that.

So, cf.Objective 2006 would be slotted sometime during the year when
either the conflict with other events would be at a minimum (CFUnited,
MAX, fusebox 2005, etc.) or its coincidence with another local event.
My focus for the conference is on CF and object-orientation (as the
name would indicate), application design with a special CF-focus,
frameworks, patterns, UML, modeling, etc., which are all things that
the CF Community has a really growing interest in... I think it's
important we foster that interest.

I've set up a special gmail account at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for
interested parties, and there's a couple entries on my blog at
http://cfobjective.blogspot.com... so if you're interested or have
something to say either comment me on the blog or email me at the
account. I'll be setting up a central point of communication for it
once I get a really good feel for how it will take off.

I told my dad I'd hold it in the family room if I have to, so I know I
must commited. Let me know what ya think...

Laterz,
J

CFUNITED? What's the deal??

2005-01-22 Thread Will Tomlinson
I'm not usually a cheapo, and I've spent A LOT of money on my favorite
profession. But has anyone seen what CFFUN 05 has become?

I went last year and it was pretty good. Listened to Forta, Liotta, lots of
great speakers. As I remember, it was about $250. Here's the price setup for
this year. I definitely can't go this time. My budget will not allow it. :(

Price Expires Cost
2/25/05 $449current price
4/31/05 $549
6/10/05 $649
Late$749
At the door $849

Am I wrong? or is this pure insanity??
