RE: Firefox Tabs

2005-01-05 Thread James Smith
Thank you Jochem. I fired off my response as soon as I saw James'
question - before I'd even gotten out of bed, in fact - and I
was genuinely trying to be helpful and give him the simplest
 but informative answer possible.

James, I'm sorry you don't like the answers you are getting
but instead of assuming we're having a bad day - which I
wasn't until I saw your response - perhaps you could assume
that we're trying to *help*? It's responses like yours that
make people throw up their hands and think Fine, maybe I
just won't bother trying to help these people.

My apologies, your answer seemed a little dismissive in it's it's not up to
you it's up to your users kind of way. While this is true, it did not
answer the question. The same could be said about using _blank to open a
new window, users can override this behavior but the behavior still exists.

I apologise if my response lead to you having a bad day, but I hope you can
see why I found your answer incomplete at best.

RE: Firefox Tabs

A user can always open a link in a new window with the application of a
right click, just like a firefox user can open a new tab with the right
mouse button.

However I have the ability to set target=_blank on a link and the link
will open in a new window, transferring control to me.

If the answer to the question is no just say so but don't try to turn it
into a control issue when it isn't. I am just trying to make it easier for

certain reports where new tabs are ALWAYS used.

You only some control over what is displayed in my browser. Firefox renders the
same HTML, but it gives users more control over how that HTML is rendered. So
the basic answer is that you use the same _blank property value.

Then I can decide how that new window is displayed in my Firefox, my choice
are to block it, to have it open in a new instance of Firefox (AKA a New
Window), or a new tab in the existing window. And there is little you can do
about my choice.

It is a control issue. I can set browser.block.target_new_window

Re: Firefox Tabs

2005-01-04 Thread Alex Sherwood
IMHO, this is a bad design choice on behalf of Mozilla.

As a developer, you should be able to specify where link opens via
JavaScript. If the use has the defaults set in the browser, then the JS
code gets presedence. If they have window opening params explicitly set,
the page opens where they'd like it to be.

This is how CSS works! Users can always override stylesheets in pages
with browser settings.

It's a shame not to be able to spawn new tabs programmatically.

The lack of a middle mouse button procludes them clicking with it, and as I
said the Ctrl button requires a second hand that the users don't want to
use.

While I agree it is not the most effective use of money, it is there money

The lack of a middle mouse button procludes them clicking with it, and as I
said the Ctrl button requires a second hand that the users don't want to
 use.

While I agree it is not the most effective use of money, it is there money
and they want to spend it.

If we are not talking thousands of users, they might want to
spend it here:

Sean gave you the simple and correct answer. You choose not to
 accept it.

Thank you Jochem. I fired off my response as soon as I saw James'
question - before I'd even gotten out of bed, in fact - and I was
genuinely trying to be helpful and give him the simplest but
informative answer possible.

James, I'm sorry you don't like the answers you are getting but
instead of assuming we're having a bad day - which I wasn't until I
saw your response - perhaps you could assume that we're trying to
*help*? It's responses like yours that make people throw up their
hands and think Fine, maybe I just won't bother trying to help these
people.
