RE: [Stats] CF-Talk: October 2003
Oh. Damn. 0_0 You don't get money just from people clicking the Ads? Well that sucks. It's not your fault if they don't want to buy a product that they've seen. TV Stations are paid regardless of if someone actually calls the 1-800 number on the screen to order anything. Billboard space is paid for regardless of whether Pepsi's sales margins in an area go up or not. Why should web based advertising be any different? -Gel -Original Message- From: Michael Dinowitz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] [Todays Threads] [This Message] [Subscription] [Fast Unsubscribe] [User Settings]

Because advertisers aren't willing to pay for click-throughs? Because there's effectively an infinite amount of advertising space on the web, unlike on TV or in the real world? Because web advertising isn't as effective as other forms of advertising? I suspect that web advertising is largely a buyer's market. RE: [Stats] CF-Talk: October 2003
Can we do a stats search ourself? A drop of 10% from one month to the next may or may not be significant when taken in context of other months eh? ;-) July had a grand total of 977 posts according to a search on everything done between 01 July and 31 July 2003. In fact the list statistics from 2002 are as follows: Posts per month: 1-3392 2-3013 3-3927 4-4409 5-4422 6-1806 So it seems that the list has natural fluctuations in number of posts and who makes those posts from month to month since we did not have HTML mail back then. Ergo it is not possible to attribute a 10% fall off in posts to a switch to HTML mail simply by looking at the number of posts. I wonder how many people would disappear if we all had to pay a yearly/monthly subscription for these lists? -Gel [Todays Threads] [This Message] [Subscription] [Fast Unsubscribe] [User Settings]

Probably has to do with the automagic comment removal system that strips out extraneous copies of the footer.Perhaps it's looking for a line of tilde characters and the stats report generates that as well. Here's the post resent. In this post I've removed all instances of lengthy successive underscore characters (more than those characters used above and below the CF-Talk Stats report header) that were used in the prior post to help visually divide sections of this report. Hopefully this will come through as intended. Re: [Stats] CF-Talk: October 2003
I'm not against paying, but I would recommend a FREE-FEE model. maybe charge a membership fee which gives access to some extended/enhancement features like... - links to archive page for particular thread. - first up, priority list delivery - serverside filtering - best practices database - editorial content - list moderation options (web based customization) just a dump. but the revenue stream would justify some extended feature development. In fact I would subscribe to houseoffusion - if there was a demonstrated commitment to some new features, and maybe some access to contribute ideas and development. Maybe let Michael define a proprietary core list/web engine w/ an open API for us to build extended (community subscriber open source) modules for the community. I could commit to $25 per year x 5 years (annual subscription) without thinking. not big $$$ - but not sure if you could squeeze more out of me. 200 subscribers = $5000 per year. $4 per month? $6 per month? Also subscribers get access to a fixed rate buy now, surplus reverse auction ad inventory for email tags, and website directory and banner rotation advertising. (meaning all traffic would have some revenue). Not only did the list of contributors vanish, so did my comment that they had... You probably had a number (50 or so) dashes, tildas or the like between the data sets. The list has been set for a long time to treat 50 or more of these elements in a row as the list footer and remove everything past it. It's not a new feature or an HTML thing but a list cleanup feature. Sorry you got caught by it. [Todays Threads] [This Message] [Subscription] [Fast Unsubscribe] [User Settings]

Re:[Stats] CF-Talk: October 2003
Can we do a stats search ourself? I'll have that build in tonight. Till then, you can use this to view the stats for CF-Talk for the last year: http://houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/stats.cfm A drop of 10% from one month to the next may or may not be significant when taken in context of other months eh? ;-) True. There is so much happening on this and other lists that the CF-Talk stats alone are not to useful. If you took all of the lists and all the stats with website usage as well then we would have something useful. The HoF site usage has been up which may mean more people are reading through the archives. I wonder how many people would disappear if we all had to pay a yearly/monthly subscription for these lists? Lots actually. I've avoided any hint of charging and have even kept FA from being moved to a 'for fee' model as I knew people would leave. This is the whole reason for the attempt at banner ads.
