Hi
Take a look at www.coldfusionhosts.net

It's got lots of hosting companies listed. Could be a useful starting
point..

RE: Hosting Question

2003-02-11 Thread Robert Bailey
Yeah, I had nothing but problems with them. I had my credit card stolen so I
cancelled it, it was the one that I used to pay for hosting, and tried for 3
weeks via email and phone to give them my new number, as they were emailing
me telling me that they can not bill it, and NEVER got it fixed, so they
cancelled my account and I went somewhere else. Always had problems logging
in to the FTP, my mail server went down too many times. I went to
http://www.experthost.com/, for MX hosting, and have had nothing but GREAT
things to say about them, they are responsive and never had any problems.
www.hostmysite.com is also a great host as well.

RE: Hosting Question???

2000-11-07 Thread Kevin Langevin

Ick...I moved away from Intermedia...I had LOTs of problems with my mail
server/web server being unreachable for hours at a time. THey could never
explain the problems. There connection speed was always totally random.
One minute I'd be blazing, then the next pages would timeout. Very
inconsistent. I mean, the internet in general is not all that constant, but
this was REALLY inconsistent. I had times when a simple username/password
validation to a SQL datasource took 4.5 minutes to execute.

That all being said, Intermedia's signup process is slick as can
be...totally automated, all login and control info sent via e-mail as soon
as you sign up...web directories generated instantly upon signup...if you're
moving domains, they give you your IP to browse to until the DNS switch.
They have a pretty nifty control panel for managing datasources, your
webserver, mail server, mail boxes, etc., though it can be a little
confusing trying to find charges and billing info.

The other thing that I REALLY didn't like, is that you can go into the
charging section, and it gives you a history of your billing, including FULL
credit card number. I have issue with them making it that easy to display
the credit card number I'm using for hosting. That should be on a separate
server, and at the very least, they should be transferring PART of the CC
number from one server to the other, internally. JMHO...

Connecting to the control panel IS on a secure connection, so I guess I'm
just overly paranoid...

Ive been with webexpose for my second month so far. I got their largest
account which is 24.95 a month though because I wanted the SQL server
and more disk space. So far am completely happy. They also just
releases a new control panel which is pretty cool in itself. Their best
features for CF is that you can register your own CFX tags and dlls on
your own withut having to contact one of their admin guys to do it for
you, and there is no extra fee for it. They also have a feature where
you can start and stop your own web service, I havent used that yet so
Im not sure how that works. There are about 4 of us here work who use
them and so far we all like them the best.

Re: Hosting Question???

2000-11-07 Thread Leong Yew

Yes, I'm currently testing their services as well. So far the host seems
excellent. Try the control panel demo. I haven't seen anything like that.
You can install custom CF/CFX tags and activeX components, set up DSNs, all
in realtime. Tech support always responds (but since so much is automated,
you wouldn't need to contact them so often), and if you plan to resell,
they'll even supply you with the CF/ASP script for automated account
activation.

On top of that they're using CF 4.5.1 Enterprise. Their load balancing and
clustering option isn't established yet but their tech support says that
they plan to offer this in the future, although this might mean more
expensive plans.

I'm also waiting to see what atswebnet.com has to offer. Their website isn't
ready but you should email [EMAIL PROTECTED] with your
requirements.

RE: Hosting Question???

2000-11-07 Thread Steve Pierce

Remember Motor Trend magazine picked the Chevy Vega as car of the year in
1972. Today the Chevy Vega routinely is in the top 10 of the worst cars in
history. I watched a movie reviewer for a local television station say that
Star Wars was one of the worst movies of the year. They later fired him for
being an idiot. I read a review of Word Processors and it listed Mass-11 as
the best word processor ever beating out WordPerfect 4 and Word. Mass-11 for
the younger crowd is the worlds only word processor written in Fortran.

It often times gets down to the old school yard saying, "My dad can beat up
your dad." I wouldn't put much faith in these rankings. Asking people on
this list what are their experiences with hosting companies will probably
yield a better set of hosts that can meet your needs then looking at some
arbitrary ranking.

Fortunately there are many to choose from, pick one and if it doesn't work
out, there are plenty more to choose from.

Good Luck,

 - Steve

RE: Hosting Question???

2000-11-08 Thread Kevin Langevin

Agreed. I know a few people who have had relatively positive experiences
with Intermedia. They just aren't me. :) I hosted with Intermedia for
about 6 or 8 months, with varying # of domains throughout, and one of my
clients had some serious issues with the fact that it took so long to log
into the site, and kept raising questions about my coding (he was NOT a
technical person) and if it was "the way you programmed the site" making it
so slow. I ended up moving the site because he was so unhappy with it.

Same experience. I even went out and bought my own server so I
wouldn't have to keep moving my ColdFusion customer's sites from host
to host. After going back and forth with them for months and them
always saying there servers performed wonderfully, and that the
problem was on my end (and I presume all of my customers ends also
that were calling at midnight wondering why their site wouldn't
load), they at least admitted there was a problem.

My suggestion to them was to stop offering CF sites at 5.00 per month
with unlimited traffic and unlimited datasources and limit the number
of CF sites to 50-75 per box.

I have a hard time swallowing that there are only 40-50 CF "users"
per box. Heck, I had 12 on a single 105.00 per month account (50.00
for base account and 5.00 per additional domain). But, I was probably
considered 1 user (with 12 ColdFusion domains). So at those numbers,
that's like 600 CF sites per box. LOL

Anyway, I had the same issues with folks questioning my programming.
Now I have about 25 CF sites and 90+ static sites on my server, with
a meager 512 Kbps connection, and everyone is extremely pleased with
the performance.

Amazing. I now count 20 solicitations to the list in less than 3 months.

Please don't consider this a flame, as I just don't like to do that.
But I was asked by a potential client the other day to give some CF
hosting recommendations and I purposely left atswebnet off the list
for this very reason (I told him I couldn't host him because he
doesn't have a development environment and I don't allow development
on my server). I'll bet I'm not the only one that leaves atswebnet
off their list. :)

I host CF also and I also have a killer shopping cart, but when there
is a request for recommendations, if it looks like I may be able to
fill the person's needs, I mail them off list and tell them what I
have to offer. Because I know that if I post "Check out cf_ezcart"
and "Check out twcreations" every 3-4 days, pretty soon I'll be
blackballed. LOL

You should at least include "I may be biased because I own (or work
for) the company" instead of making it look like you're just a
satisfied customer.

Again, please don't take this as a flame, just as some friendly advice.

The question of abiding by licensing agreements is the responsibility of the
company that owns and operates the hardware. You have no obligation to
insure that the company is holding the appropriate licenses and cannot be
held liable in any way if they don't.

Is it reasonable to ask a hosting provider for proof of licensing for
server software such as NT, CF server, SQL server, e-commerce
applications, mail servers, etc.? Has anyone done this?

On the one hand this would seem very intrusive - especially if the host
has multiple servers and you insist that they prove they have sufficient
licensing for all servers (and cpu's, where applicable). On the other
hand, it strikes me that a large host might save tens or hundreds of
thousands of dollars by not fully licensing software, with little
likelihood of detection.

If your site is being hosted by an outside provider in a shared
environment what do you feel are your obligations for assuring that "you"
are properly abiding licensing agreements?

Thanks,
Jim

own pc as a host. I have a cable modem...so I know my ip address can
changebut other than that are there any recommendations anyone would
have for not doing this. Security issues, things like that. I'd really like
to get around paying for hosting when I have broadband access and all the
software already...

2003-02-11 Thread Frank Mamone
If you don't need MX you can get a basic account at
http://www.uplinkearth.com for about 50-60$ a year. That's what I do.

I use it for demo-ing purposes.

Some cable companies block port 80, so you may have to use another. Is
this just for testing or are you going to run an actual site? If they
see a lot of traffic, they may get suspicious
