There's a function in VB (and other languages) to remove it's entry from the task manager, so that wouldn't necessarily work. Another possibility is that it attached itself to a system program that runs on startup, which is what the system file checker is good for if your on win98. 2K and XP check system files automatically. Without the knowledge of the exact problem, it could be a virus. But if it is a program then running the task manager will help identify this.
