RE: contacting congress /

There are several activist sites that have an email your congress person
section...Since I'm at work I don't have any urls to give you but I receive
info like that from that like Natural Resources Defense Council
http://www.nrdc.org/default.asp

and I know one of the organizations pushing for non gmo food had something
like that also.

Hello-

I would like to automate the process of contacting Congress a visitor's
congress member. I've got a database (provided by client) which has all of
congress, but not all of the congress members have email addresses. I guess
this is a two part question:

1. Does anyone know of a zip code -> congressional district database?
2. Has anyone automated the process of contacting congress members on a
nation wide basis? With a variety of different web based contact forms, I'm
wondering how to code this... I'd like to handle it on site- Instead of
providing a link to whatever form the particular congress member is using.
3. Last but not least- I heard a rumor that their are databases with plain
EMAIL addresses for all of congress... IF anyone knows anything about this,
I'd love to know!!! It would be much easier than trying to deal with the
assortment of contact forms...

Thanks in advance!

Another thing to keep in mind - e-mail to our elected officials is
pretty worthless. Most don't understand the medium and never look at
them. Just something to consider.

Most elected officials don't read their own "regular" mail, either - they
have staff members to sort out both of these. However, I suspect that the
weight given to something sent via snail mail is much greater than something
sent via email, simply because it's more work to send something that way -
you have to care a bit more to send snail mail.

Email doesn't get anywhere because it's only worth the paper it's

Re: contacting congress /

2002-04-23 Thread Rick Walters

That's not entirely true, David.

I worked on Capitol Hill for several years as a contractor and was able
to visit almost all of the offices of our elected officials. It is true
that all of the offices will screen your mail, and that this process may
boil your comments down to a check box in the "for" or "against" column.
It is also true that a college intern may be the one screening your
comments and your comments may not get the attention they deserve. But,
emails or letters that raise issues that do not easily fall into column
x or column y, or issues that are targeted by specific staff members
tend to get routed to the next level. The next level is usually a
staffmember (just out of college) who has been given an issue or area to
summarize for their representative. Your mailing/emailing campaign
should be targeted to "enlist" this person to your cause. It will be
this person who will raise the issue at the weekly/daily staff meeting.
Your email itself will very rarely reach the desk of your
representative, it's true, but your emails and letters are not ignored.
In fact, many senators file all of your correspondance.

Re: contacting congress /

2002-04-23 Thread BEN MORRIS

There are roughly a million companies that do this in DC. I don't know that any of
them will give you access to raw data, and it really isn't that simple. You are best
off buying a package from one of these advocacy companies. Some senators and reps
have online forms that constituents need to fill out, some will take e-mail. It is
much less of a headache to let them worry about it. If you don't mind users leaving
your site to accomplish this, you can just get a web 'sticker' from congress.org and
have users enter their zip and write the letter through that site. Or you can pay some
money and have the same function but customize the pages to look like your site.

RE: contacting congress /

We use Capwiz, and have been pretty happy with 'em as far as I know.

Here's an example of the sticker at work:
http://www.efa.org/massri/getarticle.cfm?get=61

We looked briefly at building our own system to do this, but concluded it
would be a huge headache. We also use Capwiz to allow users to register and
send faxes on issues we're advocating.

RE: contacting congress - a little help not much...

2002-04-23 Thread Rafael (Alan Bleiweiss)

Hopefully someone else has a better resource than below - this is very
limited:

It's not a 100% solution, however There's a page at the US Senate site with
links to all the senators - many have email, some have a link only to an
online form - you could grab the text and parse out all the email addresses
for those that have it...
http://www.senate.gov/contacting/index.cfm

All the House of Reps has is a bunch of mailing label, phone and name/state
lists in HTML, Word and PDF - not a single place for email though
http://www.house.gov/writerep/ is a form system they use for submitting web
form comments to congresspeople - requires NINE digit zip, and the
destination is kept behind their firewall! Talk about limited access to
Government!

If someone has the blessing of time on their hands, they could go to
http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW_by_State.htm and click to every House
of Rep's individual site and look on it for the email for that Rep.
