It appears that GoDaddy is still blocking createObject. Has anyone documented
the code changes necessary to get Ray's BlogCFC working? I would really
appreciate it if someone could post them. If no one has it documented, I
will...after I get it figured outI should do a code review of Ray's blog
before I use it anyway :-) (just kidding Ray!)

According to GoDaddy:

MX 7 Enterprise -

cfqueryparam - No restrictions, should be working properly

client variable storage - DB Mandatory

Another question might be how they are currently doing client variable
storage. I think it is currently set to the registry. It would be nice to
have the option to set it to your db.

I paid for cf hosting with GoDaddy about two weeks ago and haven't bothered
to set up the account or site yet. I just got a call from Jeff at
GoDaddy.com stating that he sees that I have paid for hosting but haven't
set it up yet and wanted to know if there was anything he could do to help.
He is going to call me back in two hours and walk me through the set-up and

If anyone has any questions you'd liked answered I'll ask them when he calls
back and try to get answers for you. At any rate I thought it was pretty
decent customer service.

Not to beat a dead horse, but ask them about cfqueryparam and sql server on

RE: Coldfusion with Godaddy

2006-05-08 Thread John Rossi
I think they probably never really got the point of my initial support
request. I haven't tried cfstoredproc yet because none of my clients sites
use it, but there is definitely a problem with cfqueryparam, and sql server
on my account at least. but The following query

SELECT *
FROM tblSites
WHERE intSiteID=

Fails with the following error

Error Executing Database Query.
[Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]EXECUTE permission denied on
object 'sp_prepexec', database 'master', owner 'dbo'.

The error occurred in : line 34

32 :SELECT *
33 :FROM tblSites
34 :WHERE intSiteID=
35 :
36 :

Its clearly a configuration issue on their end, but I am sure cfstoredproc
will probably also fail. Like I said in an earlier message, I am going to
submit another tech support request about it and reference this thread along
with some of the other blogs about cfqueryparam, and Sean Cornfield's blog
on their ColdFusion hosting in general.

They probably meant (or should have said) that GoDaddy don't support
, which does run sp_prepexec for each result specified. It's
pretty inefficient, but I think there is probably no other way to do
multiple result sets through JDBC. This is the exact reason why I don't like
and don't use cfstoredproc. It also seems like database storage client
variables may do something like that... I don't exactly remember.

They fixed it, but acted like nuthin was really wrong. Yes there's an index.htm
I PLACED on there myself, just so I could use a JS redirect to move to
index.cfm. lol!

Anyway, it's all fixed.

Thank you for contacting customer support. index.cfm is set as the default
page. There was also an index.htm which according the ther list of file
precedence will be processed before index.cfm. Currentlky, the site seems to be
functioning correctly. If you require any further support, please contact us.

It can get past hilarious. I emailed them once because I couldn't log in to
the main customer page.
They sent me forms which I had to return by post with supporting identity
documents.
I eventually called the support line... password unlocked in no time.

Seriously, just skip the whole email support and give them a call. It's
annoying that it (the phone call) cost money, but it seems to work a whole
lot better.

(index.cfm works for me btw... sorry)

RE: Coldfusion with Godaddy

2006-05-06 Thread Andrew Stevens
I'm late to this topic. I have been tooling about with GoDaddy CF hosting. I
agree it's pretty crap and can't be taken seriously.

But, it can work and it's cheap and so am I... for now, it does the job.

Sorry if this came up already;

Sean's entry on GoDaddy:
http://corfield.org/blog/index.cfm/do/blog.entry/entry/GoDaddy_and_ColdFusio
n_MX_7

For me GoDaddy was completely blocking createObject(). My 2c: A
createCompoent method would be nice, to separate CFCs from Java (for the
purpose of security sandboxes). See:
http://ray.camdenfamily.com/index.cfm/2006/4/5/Ask-a-Jedi-cfinvoke-versus-cr
eateObject#c6EB62D22-B44A-0DCA-478A82BEDB0824AF

I pretty much did the same as Lincoln to run BlogCFC, changing the cfcs
cfinvoke/init.

Snake mentioned Sandbox security. that's definitely turned on I reckon. I
only have access to my own files. The file system security is too narrow.
For example, you can't access the temp folder location... which can be used
internally to some CF tags.

Also CFDUMP can break if you are dumping objects that need reflection to be
displayed.

IMO GoDaddy is a bit of fun, but really it can't be trusted. You never know
when you're going to hit a limitation that can't be worked around.

Cheers.

My guess is someone had previously complained on the server this

worked that way from the start after I deleted whatever placeholder

There is a control panel, but it is not very comprehensive. It is not
one I have seen before...perhaps something they built in-house (it is

2006-05-05 Thread Lincoln Milner
I recently switched to GoDaddy (since I wanted CF hosting on limited
budget).

BlogCFC doesn't run "out of the box", but I was inspiried to add some
code to switch the createObjects to cfinvoke calls (only added init
calls to some functions). That and skip over the localization (since I
couldn't dummy up a way to fake a Java object). Runs great now (at
least the current production version).

Haven't run in to too much else with GoDaddy. But I haven't tried to do
that much with it yet. They're responsive to requests for information
and in setting up databases and such. That and I got a free shared
hosting account when I signed up (two for the price of one).

I believe no custom tags means just no access to the root custom tag
folder. You should still be able to use cfmodule, and I recommend that
to folks anyway.

Outside of that, I believe they recently allowed createObject for
components, which was a major hinderance. But you should check. I know
BlogCFC users have issues, but I think NOW it is just with the
createObject I do for java stuff for the localization work. (To be
clear, Paul Hastings wrong that.)

I second that John,

They are misinformed. I suspect their information came from a misconfigured
DSN setting. For example, If I set up a user "bob" and didn't change
"default database" for him, then I set up a JDBC connection without
specifying the database I wanted to connect to - it would try to connect to
master (which is the default default database for any new user), but it
would fail because master doesn't allow direct manipulation of data. Instead
it comes with a set of SP's (sort of a like an API) for making any changes.

I would be very surprised if their information was accurate. More to the
point, they are trading down when they deny cfqueryparam - not trading up. A
site that doesn't user cfqueryparam is going to be less secure, slower, and
will not be able to leverage the DB like it should.

2006-05-05 Thread Josh Nathanson
Probably they started getting more and more requests for CF hosting and
hastily slapped something together since they realized they were losing
potential hosting customers. I don't suspect they'll ever provide the
necessary support and knowledge to become competitive with other more
established CF hosts. However I guess if you have a site with a couple
cfmails and a cfinclude or two, and no sensitive data, it's a cost effective
solution.

RE: Coldfusion with Godaddy

2006-05-05 Thread John Rossi
That's basically what I told them. They will never be taken seriously by
anyone in the ColdFusion community.

I submitted that incident back at the end of March. This was for one of my
clients, who hosts with them. SQL and cfqueryparam works fine on every other
ColdFusion host who actually knows what they are doing. This is the error I
get.

I suggested maybe they might want to contact Macromedia to ask them how to
set things up correctly, but I think that fell on deaf ears. I also
suggested they change the article which states what tags they support since
it was misleading.

[Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]EXECUTE permission denied on
object 'sp_prepexec', database 'master', owner 'dbo'.

Also I was the one who posted about getting the issue resolved with cffile,
but that was just a sandbox problem.

I have hosted one site for a client there...it was a small site only
for information distribution to a board of directors, so we figured it
would be a good test of the capabilities. Here are my findings so
far:

-cffile is disabled for us. someone else on this list said they got
godaddy to enable it for them, but I have been unsuccessful...I
haven't pursued it too far, though, as we just worked around it.
-I've been on the site at least 3 or 4 times (in the couple of months
it has been up), where it looked like coldfusion was being rebooted.
And I'm not on there much. Not too stable.
-The support people don't know much about CF. I haven't talked to
anyone there yet that did.
-But hey, you can't beat the price...it works fine for what we are
doing with it, and it is something like $7/month. I still steer all
my critical shared sites to HMS.

I would think they would. They had a help section about Coldfusion when they
first released it. In fact, if you search this list on the website you
should be able to find my post with all of the direct links.

RE: Coldfusion with Godaddy

2006-05-05 Thread Jason Crider
And here's an FYI from my conversation with their sales department
yesterday.

Coldfusion only exists currently for shared hosting. Of course, that
means no access to the cf admin. If enough people sign up with them and
the user community grew I could only help but think that the support
would increase and the functionality would increase. That's hoping for
it, anyway.

To get it on virtual dedicated or dedicated you'd have to bring your own
software.

RE: Coldfusion with Godaddy

2006-05-05 Thread Snake
Its all a bit of a catch22.
If a host doesn't allow createObject() then they are more secure, so it's a
toss up of whetehr you want to be on a secur ehost or not.
The problem is that disabling CreateObject() cripples a lot of
functionality, but enabling it allows any lots of insecure activity, such as
stealing session info from othe rsites or hijacking sessions.

I have not used it, but I think I read that they do not allow CreateObject()
method... That alone is a deterent for me... But for simple header/footer
include types of sites, its probably nice and cheap.

RE: Coldfusion with Godaddy

2006-05-05 Thread Ben Nadel
I have not used it, but I think I read that they do not allow CreateObject()
method... That alone is a deterent for me... But for simple header/footer
include types of sites, its probably nice and cheap.

Anyone using the coldfusion hosting with godaddy yet?

Any opinions on how good the service is? I know about the no custom tags
thing.
