2006-05-01 Thread Darren Tracey

Details:

When : 6:30 pm, Tuesday, 2nd of May 2006
Where : ABN AMRO Morgans Limited
Level 29,
123 Eagle Street (Riverside Centre)
Brisbane CBD QLD 4000

More details here : http://qld.cfug.org.au/

This month at CFUG QLD:

Its already CFUG time again! All these public holidays have made the
last month fly by. Don't forget that this month's CFUG meeting is
on Tuesday night next week, which is the first day back after the long
weekend that starts at 5pm tonight.

This month's feature topic is a special presentation by William
Wechtenhiser on Flex Data Services. William is the Director of the Flex
Enterprise team at Adobe.

We'll also have a special new section call 'Tool Tips', that
I'm hoping will become a semi-regular topics at our meetings. We'll
be looking at a collection of useful utility apps. The kind of things
that make your development life easier and make you more productive.
Richard Turner-Jones from QMUG will be sharing with us his favourite
set of utility apps.

The meeting will also have our usual (and ever popular) general open
floor QA discussion, so bring your questions and problems.

As usual there will be free pizza, subways and drinks.

If you haven't already, then please RSVP by noon Tuesday, 2nd of May,
as it helps make sure there's enough pizza and subs for everyone.

The first Adobe 'care package' has arrived. There's lots of cool
and interesting things in it, so there'll be lots of new Adobe
branded give-aways, and a clean out of some of the older stuff too.
IF YOU DON'T RSVP, YOU DON'T GO IN THE PRIZE DRAW!

Send that email now!!

Don't miss it.
See you there.

Darren Tracey
CFUG QLD Manager

[cfaussie] Re: Quoting - calculate the planning to dev to testing ratio

2006-05-01 Thread Scott Barnes

I've posted a excel spreadsheet I've done before (in the past) which
helps break down the work load into ratings of high/medium/low.

http://www.mossyblog.com/archives/504.cfm

I've been getting more and more into BPMN / UML with simulations
attached. In that breakdown a project into BPMN using various tools
(www.igrafx.com is my fav atm) once thats pegged down it also gives
the client(s) or stakeholder(s) a reply in terms of what they want vs
need.

Based on that, one is able to focus on each task / process more in
depth (ie 3 tiers of breakdown is generally a rule of thumb... the 4th
tier would then be more UML focused).

This is for quite large projects but for small once, i use the excel
spreadsheet solution to simply rate high/med/low on classes and
methods associated with them or more to the point actions that need
making and it is pretty close to the mark in terms of quoting - when
used heh.

On 4/23/06, Mike Kear [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Over the last 10 years I've had quite a few clients who havent had
much more of an idea of what they want than i need a web site for my
 online store.

Early on, I made the silly mistake of getting started on designs in
the hope that if i gave them some idea of what it could look like,
that would help them pin down more specifically what they needed.
Dumb idea. I ended up doing a lot of work only to have the client
say well i dont like that much, so I'll see if i can get a better
 idea from someone else.

Lesson: no design work until you work out from the client what they
want and get a payment up front. Not even a few suggested ideas.

Similarly, no dev work either for much the same reason.

And I reckon you cant work out what your design or development
component is going to take you in terms of time and resources until
you pin down what's going to be there. Do you need a flash expert?
DBA? Designer? How do you know (and therefore how can you cost for
it) if you havent specified out the site?

It's amazing how many people not in the IT business are a bit
surprised by my approach to it.They wouldnt ask a builder for a
quote on building a house before they even decide how many bedrooms
 they need.

As to Duncan's initial question about a rule of thumb as to
proportions of time spent on the different phases of the project -i
doubt whether you could draw a rule of thumb, since so few projects
are just cookie-cutter versions of previous projects. You have to
spec the job first, then cost all the rest of the project based on
that. I guess you could keep track of how much time you spent doing
the spec and build that into the quote, either as a cost/overhead
recovery or a specific quoted item. Even when I look back at the
sites I've built that are structurally similar, I can't really say
there is a pattern about the amount of time spent on the different
phases. Even for the same as that other job sites, there are
significant differences in the amount of time spent.on each phase.

No I'm just cutting down the code so that you can see what I'm getting
at. Its coming from a query, I'm just using querysetcell to illustrate
that. Obviously not very well.hehehe. I'm looping over a query
nonetheless, each time I loop over I want to append the CID.

I swear I'm gonna kick myself when I'm done with this.

[cfaussie] HTTP Error 405

2006-05-01 Thread Dale Fraser

Hi,

I have a piece of client software that http posts
some data, Im trying to interface with it with no luck. It returns an
error 405

Here is the logfile entry

/phoenixapp/comms - 80 - 192.168.91.100 - 405 0 0

If I browse to post url page or post to it from

that the page isnt allowed to accept posts.

Can someone shed some light on this error and why it
might be happening.

Ok,

The client software posts data to

http://phoenix.cogmel.office/phoenixapp/comms

Now comms is a servlet, not a directory, so this gets received by a java servlet.

I want to replace this servlet with a coldfusion version. I can not change the
client, so the url must remain the same.

How can I map

http://phoenix.cogmel.office/phoenixapp/comms

to a .cfm

I've tried using virtual directories and the like, but the client is doing dumb
http posts and does not follow redirects or similar.

[cfaussie] Re: HTTP Error 405

2006-05-01 Thread Brett Payne-Rhodes

Dale,

This might be ompletely useless to you but...

In apache I trap 404 and 403 errors and redirect them to a .cfm that decodes
the URL and takes appropriate action. But I don't know if you can you do this
is IIS?

An example apache 'virtualhost' for such a thing would be:

VirtualHost 127.0.0.1
   ServerName yoursite
   DocumentRoot c:\content\yoursite
   ErrorDocument 403 /index.cfm
   ErrorDocument 404 /index.cfm
   CustomLog logs/yoursite.log common
/VirtualHost

What happens is that URLs like http://yoursite/yourpage get redirected to
index.cfm (because 'yourpage' doesn't exist) which then extracts 'yourpage'
from the URL and gets the content from the database. In your case I imagine
that you would be looking at the form variables and making processing decisions
appropriately - and I'm assuming that form variables will get passed through...

Anyway, hope that helps...

Cheers,

Brett
