Re: [Chat] Attempted break in
I'm sorry to hear that Kathleen. I know that is quite scary. We got a call on at 9 on Saturday night from our alarm company (we were at PJs enjoying a pizza and beer) that our alarm was going off. My partner and a friend came home to check on it as we assumed that it was a false alarm. No, in fact, as someone threw a rock through the front window breaking the storm and main window (luckily we have glass break sensors on the windows). The cops were great (they actually got here the same time as Paul who was only seven blocks away). They searched the entire house but they believe that it was probably just vandalism as it would not make sense for a break-in attempt to break a front window at 9 on a Saturday and only use a small rock. I did not sleep on Saturday but have adjusted now. It has been more of an inconvenience that anything else having to replace the glass in both windows. Stay safe! -Greg --- Kathleen Wilsbach <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Sunday night someone attempted to break into our back second floor > bedroom. [Chat] Lost cat?
Does anyone know of anyone who has lost a Himalayan-looking cat? My neighbor, who takes care of stray cats and gets them neutered or fixed, says that a cat appeared by his house that appears to be someone's domesticated cat, as it has a collar (no name tag, though) and is friendly. He lives in the 2600 block of Guilford. He's an older man and I don't think he has a computer, so I'll relay any messages to him if anyone knows of a missing cat. -Greg Greg Alexander Freelance Writer/Editor Editor, Mason-Dixon Arrive 2629 Guilford Avenue Baltimore, MD 21218 410-243-3387 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.gregoryjalexander.com __ Do You Yahoo!? [Chat] Found kitten
Does anyone know of anyone missing a young (maybe 6 mos old) black cat? He is quite skinny, has a skinny tail at the base with a fluffy end and is very affectionate. He/she showed up at our porch last night and was there this morning trying to sneak in. We can't take him in as our old 17-year-old cat would attack him (we've tried this before with another cat). We fed him this morning and he was starving. -Greg Greg Alexander Freelance Writer/Editor Editor, Mason-Dixon Arrive 2629 Guilford Avenue Baltimore, MD 21218 410-243-3387 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.gregoryjalexander.com We have the perfect Group for you. [Chat] Jones Fall Sewer project
So, is anyone else going crazy with this sewer project? It goes down 27th Street and this week they are tearing up 27th at Guilford by my house. It's absolutely horrible! I work from home and at several times during the day, the whole house shakes. We were given no notice about this by the city (only those located within 100 feet of 27th Street were according to the Peabody Heights Assoc.), and luckily we were both home when they started yesterday, as when they are drilling, the house shakes and things started to fall off walls and move on shelves, some of which were family antiques. Luckily we were home so that we could grab these things and put them away. Not to mention that the shaking of the house will cause damage to the foundation, I'm sure. I see that the Community Law Center has offered to help but I wonder if our being more than 100 feet away (just barely) matters. http://cityservices.baltimorecity.gov/dpw/jonesfalls/pd.html http://www.peabodyheights.org/ This sucks. -Greg Greg Alexander Freelance Writer/Editor Editor, Mason-Dixon Arrive 2629 Guilford Avenue Baltimore, MD 21218 410-243-3387 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.gregoryjalexander.com Any questions? [Chat] Crime update
I wanted to share a couple of incidents that have occurred here in the 2600 block of Guilford, as I feel the more we all know what's going on with each other's areas, a stronger community we can be. So, what that in mind: My neighbor's house was broken into on New Year's Eve around 6 p.m. He was home and found someone in his office who stole his cell phone. He struggled with the man but he got away. No weapon on him and my neighbor said the guy smelled like alcohol. Also, last night, some neighborhood kids (3-4 of them, mid teens) shot a BB gun at my partner and I on our back porch (which is luckily screened). We called the police but not sure what - if anything - happened. -Greg Greg Alexander Freelance Writer/Editor Editor, Mason-Dixon Arrive 2629 Guilford Avenue Baltimore, MD 21218 410-243-3387 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.gregoryjalexander.com Cheap talk? I agree. I pleaded with my neighbor whose house was broken into to do so, but I'm not sure if he did. I also just bumped into a neighbor who informed me that their rental property in the 2700 block of Guilford was shot at by a BB gun and broke windows. --- "D. Williams" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: - Just a message, a plea, to all concerning crime in our area. As a community, we need to make sure a police report is filed for each incidence. Steve (sorry, I don't have your direct email handy): Has your sister-in-law (Christine) moved from the house next door to me? I have not seen here in a while (I know she travels) and there has been a couple living there for the past few weeks. Then, today I noticed the entire backyard was filled with boxes and bags and tons of other stuff. I just wanted to make sure that she was OK and that what they are doing there is OK by her. I couldn't find Raquel's phone number, so I thought I'd ask you. -Greg Greg Alexander Freelance Writer/Editor Editor, Mason-Dixon Arrive 2629 Guilford Avenue Baltimore, MD 21218 410-243-3387 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.gregoryjalexander.com Looking for earth-friendly autos? - From: "Katie Beltz" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Block Leaders" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [CV Block Leaders] (no subject) Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2007 14:51:35 -0400 Monday April 2, 2007 One of our neighbors had their house broken into last night on the East side of the 2700 block of St. Paul. They asked me to email you all with the details as soon as possible so that you all might be on the look out and keep your own houses protected. Luckily they were not home, because the intruders stayed all night long. They cut the phone lines (presumably before entering the house) then forced the back door of the house open. They stole mainly jewelry, power tools, personal documents, alcohol, and some of the homeowners clothing. They may have been watching this house because they did not seem to be bothered that the car was parked in back of the house and that the lights were on up stairs. It appears that the intruders were a man and a woman and that one or both of them smoked cigarettes. They stayed in the house overnight eating the homeowners food, drinking their alcohol, and sleeping in their rooms. The home owners arrived early this morning around 7am to find the house ransacked. [Chat] Books for kids
CV neighbors, Full disclosure: I am a fan of the Oprah show and TiVo it every day. Yesterday's show was about this former Microsoft senior executive making millions and millions of dollars each year, who one year visited Nepal and learned that there were kids in Nepal - and all over the world - who were dying to learn and read but simply had no books (they fought over Dr. Seuss' books when he brought them). He quit his job and founded a nonprofit to deliver books and to build libraries and schools all over the world. So far, he has collected 3 million books, started 287 schools, established 3,600 libraries and funded more than 2,000 long-term scholarships for girls in third-world countries. His big thing is that there are 770 million illiterate adults in the world, two-thirds of whom are women and girls, so the circle will continue as illiterate women are unable to teach their children. He and Oprah have partnered where $1 donation buys a book. As a bibliophile, the show spoke to me. I made a donation to his charity (Room to Read). A friend of mine contacted me about the show. She lives in Barre Circle (near Camden Yards). She started a localized version of this idea months ago as her neighbor is a City schoolteacher in a low-income neighborhood. She and I meeting this week to discuss growing her grassroots program, as the show spoke to her, too. Of course, I want my efforts to support CV-area schools. Does anyone have any insight on how to do this at Margaret Brent and Barclay? Shall I contact the VLP? Any information would be greatly appreciated. [Chat] Crime on Guilford
Just a reminder to keep your eyes open, especially this time of year. My neighbor across the street (2600 block of Guilford) was broken into this afternoon. Ironically, I noticed a guy hanging out on their porch this morning and when I asked him who he was looking for and what he was up to, he left. I kept an eye on their house today, but apparently, he returned a few hours later and broke in their back door. He took some DVDs, CDs, cell phones, and some other items. I only wish I would have called the cops this morning but when he left, I thought it was OK. My neighbor did call the police who is there now taking fingerprints and taking a report (I went over to give the description I had). Hopefully, they'll catch him. Luckily, the convenience store owner on 27th also saw him and thinks she knows him. -Greg Greg Alexander Freelance Writer/Editor Editor, Mason-Dixon Arrive 2629 Guilford Avenue Baltimore, MD 21218 410-243-3387 [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.gregoryjalexander.com __ Do You Yahoo!? Paul and I went last night and had an amazing meal! There were a few other tables full but it looks as though the word is not out quite yet. The chef/owner came out three times to talk with us - such a nice guy (also a fellow South Carolina native). They give you this amazing hot cornbread to start and the portions are huge. We both had the fried chicken plate with mac and cheese, yams and spinach. Also had a decadent dessert - chocolate pound cake. Beautiful presentation and very affordable. It's BYOB, and there is no corkage fee. We had a huge meal and with a generous tip, it was about $40. Let's support this local restaurant run by a great guy. Just a reminder of the threat of violence here in CV. My neighbor here in the 2600 block of Guilford Avenue just informed me that a renter on our block was held up at gunpoint at 2 a.m. this morning as he was unloading his car. [Chat] Crime wave continues in lower CV
For the second time in three weeks, we just heard 5-6 gunshots within a block of our house on Guilford (at 9 p.m. on a gorgeous evening). About seven cop cars responded, which is good. Meanwhile, the house at 2622 Guilford has become a full-time drug house with a constant stream of cars coming to the house, double parking and going in for drugs as I smell the daily smell of marijuana smoke as I walk the dog. Also, a group of four 12-year-olds harassed me as I walked the dog, one of them carrying a metal baton (I later saw him duck in the bushes, undoubtedly to assault a future passer-by). I call the cops but nothing happens. Ahhh, life in the Village. Isn't it grand?! [Chat] 2625 Guilford
Great news! Renovation has begun at 2625 Guilford! The house was purchased by St. Ambrose from the City and has been abandoned for 10 years and has always been the eye-sore of the block, not to mention a common place for people to dump trash and for juveniles to hang out and smoke pot. They have already made tremendous progress (I peaked in a window). And, with the recent renovation next door at 2623 (which really needed it) this is very exciting news in what has been a rough spring with all the crime on our block and surrounding blocks. The guy who owns the house on the corner of Guilford and Lorraine Avenue just stopped by to inform me that his house (he renovated it and it's on the market) was broken into and they stole all the appliances. Chris is long gone; he moved a while back. The current owner renovated it (thank God, it was disgusting) and it's on the market. [Chat] Another crime wave in lower CV
Neighbors, please be careful and keep your eyes open. In the last five days, we have had three break-ins in our block (2600 Guilford) alone. One house had all appliances stolen, another resident had a bike stolen off the front porch as he went inside to unlock his door while another house just got broken into today in broad daylight. Theories abound any but some are saying that the recent increase of police presence on 27th near Barclay – while a great idea – has pushed crooks west to Guilford Avenue. Let's keep our eyes open and don't hesitate to call the police if you see anything suspicious. Instead of sitting on my quiet screened-in back porch in the evenings, I plan on sitting on my front porch and stoop for the next week to let these crooks know that we're watching! Re: [Chat] Just some thoughts
Sonja, I love the sweeping idea and Front Porch Fridays. My partner meets with police regularly in DC with his job and having "eyes on the street" is the No. 1 thing the police recommend to fight crime. As you say, if there are people outside (especially in cold weather), crooks will go elsewhere. We have been sitting outside more and more on our front porch on Fri and Sat nights (with a bottle of wine) to keep an eye on neighbors. I hate cold weather, but I can put on a bulky jacket, right? Great ideas - keep them coming and let's take back our neighborhood! [Chat] CV Book Launch Party at Village Learning Place, March 14
Paul and I are pleased to invite everyone to the Book Launch Party at Village Learning Place, 2521 St. Paul Street, on Saturday, March 14 at 2 p.m. for our book "A Brief History of Charles Village." The 128-page book explores Charles Village's transformation from its inception as a country retreat for downtown residents to a diverse neighborhood today composed of longtime residents, recent transplants, apartment renters and university students. Paul and I will be providing wine, soft drinks and will have some snacks on hand, too. We will also be selling signed copies of the book ($21.99 for the book, as well as a special CV gift set for $25). We'll accept cash, checks as well as credit/debit cards. While Barnes and Noble, as well as Greetings and Readings, are having book signings later this month, we wanted to launch the book at a local institution such as the Village Learning Place. The publisher has also generously agreed to make a contribution to the Village Learning Place. Our block (2600 Guilford) is having a block yard sale this Saturday, 8:30-12:30. I find that hard to believe. The majority of our items were from $0.25 to $1, including shorts/shirts/sweaters for $1. Considering that most vendors reported that they sold almost everything, I'd say you were in the minority. Also, it was a great community building exercise for our block and all unsold items were donated to charity. Re: [Chat] 2600 Block Guilford Sidewalk Sale
Jusy, Glad to hear it about the positive interaction. I was not trying to equate the two variables; rather, stating that we had a good time and it was a good exercise for us, especially considering that those of us in lower CV receive little support and feel on our own most times, so we must band together. BTW, men's clothes were a small fraction of the items. I sold Fiestaware dishes, for example, for $0.25/each that retail for $9 for a small plate online today. [Chat] Beware dog owners or walkers in general
As I was walking my dog tonight at 27th and Guilford, I encountered a lady with two medium-sized dogs. As I crossed their path, one of her dogs (it was a black mid-sized dog) chased after my elderly greyhound, who fell in the street and hurt his hip again (he's still limping hours later). This is not the first time we've encountered this unfriendly and irresponsible dog owner, who shrugged off my complaint to her to please control her dogs. I reminded her that she needs to have her dogs on a leash (she puts them on leash only when encountering other dogs). I'm not sure if her aggressive dog is only so with dogs or also with humans, but be careful out there if you see her. -Greg Greg Alexander Freelance Writer/Editor Editor, Mason-Dixon Arrive 2629 Guilford Avenue Baltimore, MD 21218 410-243-3387 ugagra...@yahoo.com www.gregoryjalexander.com ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/chat@charlesvillage.info/

[Chat] Used car
A couple of months ago, I got notice from my repair place that my car needs a lot of work, and it's getting to the point that spending any more money is fruitless. So, tired of renting cars and taking cabs to make do, we must begin the dreaded search for a car. Since we are on a tight budget and dealers offer few decent cars for under $11,000 it seems, I thought I'd ask if you know of anyone out there looking to sell a car in Charles Village? Lauren has friends at 2602 N. Calvert. Her note from last night: -- OK. I just talked to one of my friends who lives at 2602 N. Calvert and she said that the shooting happened in the back alley behind their house and didn't involve them. Police suspect it was drug related. One of her housemates had just walked in from the back alley and had seen 2 men with hoods and then as she went inside she heard shots and went back outside and one of the men was dead. She spent hours with the police telling them what she saw and heard. She is freaked out, but the rest of them are doing alright. [Chat] CV Retail
So despite Ledo's having an awning over the entire former Rocky Run space, I noticed for the first time today that there are retail for lease signs plastered on all the windows and door for the left half of the space - are they sub-leasing this space? Also, had a haircut at the new hair place, Moxie. Second time there; two bad haircuts and the inability to take you on time despite an appointment. Terrible. Also, why is it so hard to find a place to grab a late brunch/early lunch in CV on Sundays? Paul and I walked for 30 minutes on Sunday around 1: Terra Cafe opens at 3 for some reason, MJs Soul Food is closed, Wyman Park restaurant is closed, iBar opens at 5 and Pete's closes at 1. We finally ended up driving to The Dizz in Remington, despite just being there the night before. What's up with all these places being closed on Sundays? Are we in Alabama? I left the South 13 years ago for many reasons, one of which being having religion mandate business hours. Love Carma's, too, but alas no Sunday. Paper Moon is always good as is Golden West (we avoided Hampden as it was Hon Fest). To: "The Charles Village Chat List" Date: Monday, August 30, 2010, 8:15 PM Rosie is home safe and sound as of 6:15 this evening! She is happily sleeping...likely didn't get much in the past few days on the street. I pass along my deepest gratitude to everyone tonight who sent positive wishes our way and who helped in the search. Most especially, THANK YOU to the Matthews-Hale Family for spotting Rosie in their alley and marching her right on over to us! Charles Village community at its best! With gratitude, The Goucher Family - Original Message - From: Goucher To: The Charles Village Chat List Sent: Sunday, August 29, 2010 5:44 PM Subject: PLEASE pass along: missing kitty!! Hi, everyone- particularly those in the 2700 block areas of Calvert, Guilford, and St. Paul. We just returned from a brief trip to the shore and came home to find our cat, Rosie, (about 3 years old) missing. She has a chip ID implant, so I am hoping someone will pick her up and have her checked. But, if you see her, she is a dark tabby cat with splashes of white on her face, a stubby tail, and a white tummy that sways when she walks. Most concerning to me is that when we adopted her, she had previously been declawed, so she has been an indoor cat! If you have seen her, please let us know. We are very worried.
