Re: [Chevelle-List] Checking engine oiling
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Keith, If your gauge showed you had good oil pressure and you wiped out two lobes on a new cam it was more than likely caused by improper break in of the new cam. When you assemble the motor the lobes of the cam and the bottoms of the new lifters should be liberally coated with moly grease. Then, when you start the motor up for the first time it should be run at no less than 2000 RPM and not held at a steady speed for at least 20 minutes. It should especially not be allowed to idle during this time. This allows the cam and lifters to break in without galling against each other. If this step is left out when you first fire up an engine with a new flat tappet (not a roller) cam it's highly likely you will eat up a lobe or two in no time flat. Donnie Gates --- HI, My name is Bill, and I recently bought a '70 SS clone from a guy I have known for 25 years (he had the car that long too). When I bought the car, it never occured to me to check the VIN tag in the dash. I have now discovered that the tag is gone. He said the tag was lost when the car was in the body shop, and they replaced the windshield. I have since learned that many people have problems with the tag when they replace the windshield. Nevertheless, I am now trying to verify the car to the title. It is a Canadian car (according to the title VIN, which does not have an alpha charachter in it). Anyway, I have looked in the places suggested by local law enforcement veterans, but I have not had any luck. I figured that perhaps someone in your club who has done a frame-off has laid eyes on such "hidden" numbers, and could direct me. It would be helpful to have an exact location and number size. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Jeff, The engine numbers look correct for 71SS, but keep in mind to only way to be positive it's an SS is to have the build sheet, or the pertect-o-plate (pop) 1966-68 the SS was a separate model with 138 being the first three numbers of the VIN, from 1969-72 the SS became an option package that could be had on several different models of Chevelle, with all the clone happy people out there, if I was going to buy this car as a true SS,I would want to see the documentation noted above. without it, you can not prove positive it's a true SS. [Chevelle-List] Paint touch-up problems
Well, my 71 Chevelle is finish and the motor work is now completed. I install the new camshaft again, because the first one rounded off two lobes. Now I need to retouch up some chips from aligning the hood, door etc. The problem I have is that when I sand down a chip area and spray it the edges will lift up No matter how I sand down an area, when I spray it the edge will try to lift up. I can touch areas by using an artist brush and will not have this problem of the edges lifting up, but if I respray an area I have trouble with the paint lifting up around the edges. This means that I have to resand and try again. This also means that a small area becomes a big area before I am finished. Why is the paint lifting up when I try to retouch up a paint chips with a spray gun? Keith [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Chevelle-List] Aluminum engine
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Has anyone here had any experience with building an aluminum engine or know of anyone who has. I was wondering just how expensive this build up will get. I am excluding the LS1 and LT1 because i have yet to see where they can make the power that i want. I am in the process of restoring the suspension and i am just trying to think ahead about engines so i can know what rating springs and shocks to get. The move will be put in my '70 Chevelle with a pro-touring application. The weight reduction of an aluminum engine is unserpassable in such an application. If someone has used an engine. What engine have they used. There is one made by Arias called the New Century and several by GM performance that can be seen here: http://www.sdpc2000.com/search.asp As i am sure all of you know and it is quite obvious that these engines are not cheap. I would like to be able to plant around 500 hp/tq to the rear wheels (meaning RWHP). I plan on trying to use the Hal coilover shocks. Thanks for all the help. The car is mainly original and basically stock except for a few mildupgrades (e.g. 2.5" exhaust, electronic ignition, etc.) & I'd like tokeep it that way Here are my questions:1) How many CFM were the factory quadrajets used on bigblocks from the69-72 time period? (i.e. is there an identifying characteristic and/or ID # on itthat I could see that would tell me for sure without me having to takethe carburetor off it? Seems to me that when I first bought the vehicle,I looked for numbers but didn't find much of anything that anyone coulddecode for me). 4) Outside of the Year One, PADDOCK and OPG/Edelbrock models listedabove, can anyone recommend any other "national" specific sources/modelsfor a replacement quadrajet for me? (and does anyone think I might beable to find a new or rebuilt one locally through my local auto partsstores / suppliers - e.g. NAPA and the likes of them)?5) When changing a carburetor, is there any other miscellaneous h/w orgaskets that I would need to replace? Re: [Chevelle-List] Another VIN Question
Donnie, Ask the gentleman if he has removed the heater core cover (hopefully not an air car !) to check for the numbers ? How about the numbers on the engine pad - the last six (?) numbers of the VIN match the title ? Also, if it is a Canadian Chevelle, I believe they (GM of Canada) can supply information as to how the car was originally ordered. Not sure how much that will help since it was cloned as an "SS".
