I won't dispute the durability of POR-15, it's a tough product. Personally, I
don't like the look.

DP primers provide corrosion protection and a urethane topcoat can be tailored
to your taste as far as gloss is concerned. As far as aggravation factor is
concerned, the DP with a urethane topcoat has an extra step involved but the
appearance is worth the extra time IMO.

Funny thing is..DP40 didn't have any lead in it. PPG took the zinc
chromate out of it, changed the mixing ratio and called it lead
free..Hm.

joe, seems to me the por 15 has many exacting steps that you must follow to a
t--
and if you don't they will tell you thats why it failed, it seems more
expensive to me too. i was going to try it, and wound up spending alot of
extra money, oh, you have to wash with the metal ready and the marine clean
first i was told, as far as holding up better, i don't know, i never tested
each one separately under a stress test. i tried the por 15 on some washers
for lug nuts and it peeled off right away, and the minute i opened the jar it
got hard on me after a short time. i also painted the bottom of one of my
cars with their chassis black and after it dried i put a jack stand under the
car and it wound up sticking to the jack stand. maybe its me but this
urethane method is the one i prefer, seems like painting over rust is asking
for trouble, maybe it loks it out from outside, but whats happening
underneath???

When you adjust Hyd. lifter with the engine
running. You loosen the rocker arms until they click, then turn down how
much. I have heard anything for 1/4 to 1 full turn. I use old valve covers
with the top cut out. How important is it to do this hot and how hot does
  it have to be.

Re: [Chevelle-List] adjusting valves while running

2002-02-15 Thread Herbert Lumpp

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Over the years I've had good luck by warming the engine to operating temp
and adjusting the valves with the engine off. I adjust one cylinder at a
time (it helps if you have a remote starter switch). First I make sure the
valves are closed, then I will back off the nut a bit, then while I tighten
it down, I rotate the pushrod until I start to feel a little drag. After a
while you get a feel for it. I think it works just as good as adjusting
with the engine running, plus there's no mess.

When you adjust Hyd. lifter with the engine
running. You loosen the rocker arms until they click, then turn down how
much. I have heard anything for 1/4 to 1 full turn. I use old valve covers
with the top cut out. How important is it to do this hot and how hot does it
have to be.

Denny,

For starters, I checked out the March pulley system (brackets and pulleys).
Sorry, but not worth $1000 in my opinion. I did get the pulleys, which were
very reasonably priced (about $165) from Summit. For brackets I used the
Vintage Air compressor bracket and a factory alternator bracket. I made my
own tubular adjusters with left and right hand thread rod ends. I just
installed a new chrome alternator and it now sits a bit crooked. I may end
up getting the Vintage Air alternator bracket to see if it will straighten
up the alternator.

As you may have guessed, I have Vintage air in the Elky. It was a bit
pricey, but I got some optional things over the standard kit. It's not
operational yet, I'm still in the process of getting it all hooked up. I
didn't like the cheesy plastic filler panels included with the kit but since
I have a custom dash and smoothed firewall, I didn't need to use them.

Once it's all hooked up and working I'll post my thoughts. It may be a
while since we're moving at the end of the month.

Because of posters that won't let a sleeping dog lie, the GM crate Ram Jet
502 is back under serious consideration. Is anyone running this engine (or
the 505/502) in a 68-72? Second choice is the Ram Jet 350/350. Whichever
one goes in will have the March pulley system. Also want to convert from
factory air (not working) to Vintage or Southern Air and clean the firewall
off. Anyone have any experience with either one of these? Would be cleaner
looking and better/colder with the updated compressor. Excited!! Have not
had a muscle car since my new Fury III High performance 383 4-barrel/

Can't help with your dilemma, but I'd like to hear from someone with a ramjet.
But, I did see in the current CHP that Vintage Air has a set of their own serpentine
pulleys. Meant to work with their compressor. It may pay you to check pricing
versus March. Maybe you can get a package with the air.

a 350 cu.in. motor. The car seems to run ok when you get going and does
not have a miss. It idles ok. I check the timing and moved it up and
down with no change in this popping. The popping sound get louder with
the timing is advance higher. It is just when you take off fast that you
hear this popping noise. I am afraid that this is a valve train problem
because the car idles ok and runs ok. Any Idea on where to start
looking.

Keith, very sorry to hear of the trouble. Is this the same as a flat

led me into several car-less years in the infamously economic toilet that

Larry,

Ebay allows folks to find things they might not find at a swap. God knows I have traveled far for swaps and came away empty handed.

To me the only Ebay negative is some folks, sellers & buyers are not attending swap meets as frequently. Something Ebay can never do is take away that morning coffee or enjoying the afternoon sunshine finding parts and making new friends and seeing old friends.  Best damn thing a car lover can ask for.

Brad,
I believe that the rocker studs are all misaligned. How could the same lobe
round off twice. I worked for Crane Cams for 20+ years. I know how to
install and break-in a new camshaft. I have done several in the pass years
with no failures. The milled part of the pedestal on the stud for the lobe
that is rounding off has steps in it. It is not milled flat. It also looks
like the stud is angled wrong. I had the same cam in this car from year
before I restored the car all the way. It ran great for years. All I did
this time is change the cam from a 110 centerline to 108 for more low end
power and a better sound. I did not like how the guy was doing the head work
and wish I had never changed it from pressed in studs to screw-in type. The
old cam ran on pressed in studs for year. He just made a big deal about it
and he was the one who did the body work and sprayed the paint job for the
car, so I had to give it.
This is sad and very embarrassing and is a real problem. Unemployment
S-ks.

I agree, the site is very good!
This has the potential to become very interesting & useful to all
Chevelle/Elky owners!
You should put a guest book/comment page on it for feedback.

Sorry to hear the bad news, Keith. Just out of
curiosity, has the lifter bore ever been checked for
alignment, diameter, etc.? Or perhaps the rocker stud
hole was tapped out of alignment if the heads were
converted from pressed studs.

Hope you have a run of good luck soon...

This is not necessarily the case. If these visitors do not cache many
pages and they come back after the cache has cycled, they will request
the page again. If they have their cache preferences set to check for a
newer version of the page every visit, each time the start the browser,
or they use cache clearing programs, they will register multiple hits a
day. Hits are a very poor measure of anything. The only numbers that
can be used to compare different sites are page views and visitors. You
can get free programs to analyze your traffic, but most hosts will have
a version you can use.

For example our main site had 426,497 hits yesterday. But we only had
23,615 visitors yesterday, and they accounted for 174,261 pageviews. So
hits and visitors are not even close. On another smaller site with zero
graphics, the numbers for yesterday were 631 hits, 295 visitors, and 453
pageviews.

In no case was the number of hits equal to visitors.

> If we get 500+ visitors per day that site must be of value to
> someone or it wouldn't be getting so much traffic. Meaning it
> has some value to the visitors as well as vendors whom may be
> listed there.

500 actual people per day is decent, but their value is subjective. 500
pre-teens checking out warez is not worth squat, and 500 CEOs checking
out yachts would be a gold mine. What do you know about your traffic?
If they are checking out car links, they likely run from 14 year old
boys into cars on up to older upscale men with collector cars. You need
to figure out what your traffic might be interested in before you can
value them.

> It would be nice to figure out a way to cover costs related
> to the site. I'm posting questions here because it is best
> to ask those that use the links what they feel is best. We
> dislike banner ads so I'm looking for ideas. We do not

Banners will not get you much. Most are paying per click unless you
really have a ton of traffic, so you would not get much for them. If
you get 10 cents per click and one percent of your visitors click, this
is 50 cents a day. It is enough to pay for your $55/year, but the
clickthrough rates might not be so high.

I suggest you:

1) Look for sponsors. Find businesses that would be happy to be listed
as a sponsor of your site for $10 or $20 per year. Find some local
speed shops or write to national chains and see if they are interested
in this. Maybe some of the aftermarket companies would be interested as
well. Ask any of the vendors you are already linking to in your parts
area.

2) look at affiliate programs. You may already be linking to a business
that pays you for referring them buyers. Check out
http://www.associateprograms.com/ and search for "cars" or "automotive"
and then join programs that will be of interest for your traffic.
CashPile (http://www.cashpile.com) has 161 programs listed under
Automotive. For example, CarParts.com has a program. Finally, go to
CommissionJunction (http://www.cj.com) and join them. They have 25
automotive programs, including Eastwood and JCWhitney, great sites that
auto enthusiasts would be interested in.

Just plain links are not as attractive if you are trying to make money.
You will want to create an editorial area where you can start to write
articles, recommend products, etc. This personal endorsement can get
people to take action. But, then this becomes something that you will
be spending time on and might be more than you want, as the hourly wage
will be very low.

I would think that with 10-20 hours effort, you should be able to make
your site self supporting, and you never know, it might make you enough
extra money to pay for gas!

Re: [Chevelle-List] adjusting valves while running

2002-02-15 Thread GLENN BAILEY

Adjusting valves when the engine is warm makes the adjustment more accurate.
Otherwise, you're just ballparking it. The difference in how much of a
turn to do results from different applications. OE spec. books typically
listed 3/4 to 1 turn. This was to get the lifter in the middle of its
travel, and be the most maintenance free. Using less turns (less preload on
the lifter) reduces the opportunity for lifter pump-up at high RPM and the
possibility of a valve hanging open due to this. 1/4-1/2 turn is the
typical high performance setting for this reason. Can result in more
frequent lifter adjustments since it doesn't take much wear to loosen up 1/4
turn preload, but hey, that doesn't bother you, right? Its still less work
than solids.

[Chevelle-List] Site Hosting

I have two sites with domain names. One domain costs $15.00 a year and the
other was $35 (I know, I got snookered on that one!). My "dalesplace" site
I also pay for hosting - Whizhost - can't remember the cost but close to $7
a month for 100 Mb of disk space and 10 Gb of transfer. I pay for both out
of my pocket for a couple of reasons. I use FrontPage to publish and
Whizhost supports it, they have Internet mail connections so I can read my
mail when I'm on the road, and I hate popup ads and I'm sure visitors do
too.

My second site, "team67" is hosted by my son. He does web programming and
offers space, programming, etc. and I do advertise for him. Essentially I
have unlimited space but I try not to abuse it :*). He also supports
FrontPage and tech support is only a phone call away for me. He also hosts
the Midwest Chevelle site for us at no charge, only a "Hosted by" logo and
link. He's mainly into the business and eCommerce side but is looking to
expand and would entertain any suggestions for individual sites. Visit
http://www.bull-enterprises.com for contact information.

I've tried Geocities but I update my sites frequently and going through
their "site maintenance" is too much of a pain. Toss in the popup ads,
their merger with Yahoo and having to convert everything...too much trouble.

p.s. the down-side of my suggestion is that if people start deciding that
it's not worthwhile to pay, you will not have much of a site left, and
therefore will get less traffic, and so on, and so on.

Kelly may have hit it on the head. You may be better off moving it to a
no-charge host and in turn not charging for listings.

Here is my guess,

It's always good to give things away the first few months. By then, anybody
who has a decent statistics package will be able to check their "referring
URLs" to see if they are getting traffic from your site. Then when their
fr*e trial period is over, they can deicide whether or not it's worth it to
them to pay a nominal annual fee to stay on the site. I think you would have
to keep the price pretty low too, because there are plenty of sites that
will put up a link at no charge (like mine - I also have a huge Vendors
area, and I don't charge anybody). Since your cost is only $55/year and you
have so many vendors listed, you should have no problem recouping your
expenses. Even at $10/year per vendor, you would probably make a few
thousand bucks per year off of it. However, the key is going to be proving
to people that your site is bringing them traffic.

Let me be more specific, that's 500+ different/significant visitors per day.
Each visitor will register one hit per day no matter how many times they
visit that page in one day.

If we get 500+ visitors per day that site must be of value to someone or it
wouldn't be getting so much traffic. Meaning it has some value to the
visitors as well as vendors whom may be listed there.

It would be nice to figure out a way to cover costs related to the site. I'm
posting questions here because it is best to ask those that use the links
what they feel is best. We dislike banner ads so I'm looking for ideas. We
do not belong to a Chevelle organization of any kind so we have nobody to
help support costs related to the site. All of the other sites we maintain
are supported financially by those specific organization we are affiliated
with.

If you have thoughts on this keep the email coming...

Very true.

If you're talking about the visitors paying for the site, you will not be
successful at this even if you just do donations through paypalthere
are many sites and newsletters that have tried thisworks great for a
short while, but then people forget how much they like something when the
money subject keeps coming up

I went to the site myself and simple text links aren't going to generate
enough interest for cash or support. No matter how many you have, someone
can always get to the site via searching or other site links. You'll have
to make the site visually interesting and have content other than just
links to get support from vendors. Most people that have links pages run
them from free web space given to them by their ISP's or utilize Geocities
or Topcities for the web space.

So what costs do you have other than time to compose the links? Why do have
the database function tied to each link and is this really necessary? Does
this cost money? Are you charged for the traffic you get to the site?
I'm betting you could move the links to a site that doesn't charge a
penny and forget about getting a domain name that costs money and just run
the pages for free. Not many folks are going to want to pay for just
links..

Hi Herb,

Non-retractable,
lift-latch seat belts are $59.95/pair and come in about a dozen colors. Push
button style are $32.95/pair but they only mention fitting bucket seats for
some reason. 1964-67 seat belt anchor bolts (chrome) are $9.95 each.

The car is the first musclecar I've had in years. I had a bunch of them when
I was younger but life kinda got in the way of my hobby. The car still needs
a lot of work but it doesn't look too bad for a driver & it gives me
something to play with to keep me out of trouble.
