RE: [Chevelle-List] Four Speed to Automatic

2002-03-26 Thread Mark Weber

I do
not know if a TH400 and a manual trans are the same length.  I started with
a 400 and went to a 700.

No
reputable shop will tell you the size of shaft you need :)  Too risky for
them.  They will tell you to measure from yoke center to yoke center and
bring them a number.  They can make a shaft the exact length that you
specify.

IMO it
is not easy getting this measurement.  I took mine while the rear
suspension was hanging. I measured three times but somehow when the shaft was
put on it is about 1" too short.  Mine will probably work like it is
initially, but I intend to have the shop lengthen it or I will get another
shaft and have it shortened to the correct length.  My suspension is fully
extended yet, with new springs, gas charged shocks, and polygraphite
bushings.  If the back end sags or sits down a bit after some use that will
locate the drive shaft farther onto the trans output spline.

If you
found someone with the transmission setup you want, you could measure the shaft
on their car and it would probably be ok.

Good
luck.

Mark

Will I have to shorten the drive

Lojac,
The TH400 and TH700 are different
lengths.
You will need to shorten the drive shaft if you go
to a th700. Not sure of the length, people will tell you to "measure
your car".
The trans tunnel on the pass side at the
firewall will need to be dented in a bit for clearance with a TH700. Not a
big deal but a mod was required on my 1971.
The trans cross member needs to move if going from
a TH400 to TH700. There were existing holes in my frame I used. It sounds
like some frames have correct holes and some people can use one existing
hole and drill another on each side.
The TH400 trans cooler lines I purchased work on my
TH700.
If
you go from a three speed auto on the floor to a 4 speed, you can change the
console face plate and shift detent plate to one for the 4 speed. Year one
sells the kits, I think they are about $100.

  Is
this an easy swap or complicated?  I have been doing some reading on
the web about having to shorten the drive shaft because of the length of
the TH400.  Is this true?  I was also wanting to use a

2002-03-26 Thread Christian Sager

Well…..

A/C is a pain to add to a car.  If
you are set on having this I would definitely buy a factory AC car.  A big
block could always find its way in place of the 350.  In terms of power
there is no replacement for a big block.  At the same time a decent 350 is
no slouch.  If its going to be a highway cruiser r something just to enjoy
driving around a Small Block will eb fine.  If you want something that’s
more aggressive and has tons of torque there is no way to argue with a rat.

Good Luck

I have a heavy duty 4x8 trailer that I've been using the
last four months to carry my tools. It was custom built of heavy gauge steel and
has the swing mounted "leg" (I can't remember the term). Also comes with custom
made tailgate brackets and a 2x12 tailgate (rough old wood) and a chain (10')
with lock. Comparable trailers are selling for about $650, but I'll take $450
for it (I need the money to pay some bills)It has been licensed and I'll
deliver it free within 100 miles of Dallas.

Got just what you need. Check
http://www.dalesplace.com/htm/chevelle/chevelle.htm and click "The
Interior"
link. Full length, custom console w/4 bucket seats in a 67 Chevelle.
It's
not "integrated" into the dash but does butt up to the bottom of the
dash
and curls around underneath.

I don't know the cost of just the console itself as it was done the same
time the rest of the interior was done. The console had to be built in
the
car to fit, removed and taken to a shop and put back together to do the
Plexiglas. Entire console was torn back apart and reassembled in the
car
before electrical work and carpet could be done. All the relays for the
electric windows and doors are under the front Plexiglas panel. In
material, man-hours, and Plexiglas I would venture to say it probably
added
in the neighborhood of $600-$800 to the interior cost.

Got just what you need. Check
http://www.dalesplace.com/htm/chevelle/chevelle.htm and click "The Interior"
link. Full length, custom console w/4 bucket seats in a 67 Chevelle. It's
not "integrated" into the dash but does butt up to the bottom of the dash
and curls around underneath.

I don't know the cost of just the console itself as it was done the same
time the rest of the interior was done. The console had to be built in the
car to fit, removed and taken to a shop and put back together to do the
Plexiglas. Entire console was torn back apart and reassembled in the car
before electrical work and carpet could be done. All the relays for the
electric windows and doors are under the front Plexiglas panel. In
material, man-hours, and Plexiglas I would venture to say it probably added
in the neighborhood of $600-$800 to the interior cost.

RE: [Chevelle-List] 64 SS Antenna Location

2002-03-26 Thread 396guy

The different locations may very well be dependent on
what radio was offered.  I know in '67, the antenna mounting location
depended on what was ordered.  A front antenna was standard on (1)
Pushbutton radio [RPO U63], (2) Pushbutton radio w/rear seat speaker [RPO
U63/U80] and a rear antenna (manually operated) had to be ordered separately
[RPO U73].  With the AM-FM Pushbutton [RPO U69] with or without rear
speaker, only a front antenna was available.  The rear antenna was not
available on wagons or anything with AM-FM radio.

Quite possible that the same (or similar) was true of
the '64 model year.

Larry as usual you RIGHT ON. The front ant was

I have three 64's. Two are factory rear mount

it was an "add on". i have never seen one on drivers front side front or
rear . the only time i've seen one on drivers side rear is when there
have been dual antennas and then the driver side was a fake.i believe this was
a dealer add on. i think it may have been which plant the car was built . i
remember years ago i was told that if the antenna was in the rear it was a
california car. my car was built at freemont and the antenna is in the front.
my buddys car was built in alanta and it is a rear mount. so that blows that

Lacquer is easy, paint it yourself. CHP had an article where they painted
a Camaro out side. I painted my Wife's 71 Z28 in my machine shop.
5 coats of color (any screw ups ) wait 30 mins & sand out . Then I added
15 coats of clear, after a week, sand & buff it out like a mirror.
10 yrs later that car won best of paint in a big car show, we did buff it
out before (that's why the many coats of clear).

Yes Lacquer will not stand up like the newer paints, but it is easy
to do.

I'm painting acrylic enamel (Ditzler/PPG) I've used it ever since I can
remember and am way to comfortable with it's intricacies to experiment with
one of the urethanes. Plus it's cheaper for the actual paint than a
urethane. You can't really escape the labor it takes to prep the car prior
to the color coat but both the enamel and the urethane are significantly
easier than lacquer when you get to the color part. Sounds like you have
time to go to some car shows and talk to people about their paint jobs.
Most people can't wait for someone to ask them about their cars. You should
be able to see several examples of each type and then decide if you can
justify the price tag of lacquer.

Hello

Well, I did some checking on paint job estimates even though I have
painted some beautiful cars many years ago.

To paint using Acrylic Laquer, spraying several thin coats, and then
following with a clear coat, I'm getting figures up around $2,000.00 and one

nearly $4,000.00. And well, no way want to handle that for paint.

 Anyone have any good ideas?

Tom

  Lojac,
  The
TH400 and TH700 are different lengths.
  You
will need to shorten the drive shaft if you go to a th700. Not sure of
the length, people will tell you to "measure your
  car".
  The
trans tunnel on the pass side at the firewall will need to be dented in a
bit for clearance with a TH700. Not a big deal but a mod was required on my
  1971.
  The
trans cross member needs to move if going from a TH400 to TH700. There were
existing holes in my frame I used. It sounds like some frames have correct
holes and some people can use one existing hole and drill another on each
  side.
  The
TH400 trans cooler lines I purchased work on my TH700.
  If
you go from a three speed auto on the floor to a 4 speed, you can change the
console face plate and shift detent plate to one for the 4 speed. Year one
sells the kits, I think they are about $100.

Is this
an easy swap or complicated?  I have been doing some reading on the web
about having to shorten the drive shaft because of the length of the
TH400.  Is this true?  I was also wanting to use a TH700is
this any different from doing the swap with the

Tom,
Why spend money on a lacquer paint job. Poly-urethane is so much more durable. It's more work to apply, but if you're not doing it yourself...

[Chevelle-List] Paint Jobs

[Chevelle-List] Woodward Dream Cruise

2002-03-26 Thread Richard Milkiewicz

Well guys and gals, It's spring (4"-5"inches
predicted today in Mich.) Time to start thinking about cruising. Has anyone had
the privilege of going to the worlds largest cruise. The Woodward
Dream Cruise. If not, this is not to be missed. People from around the
world attend it. It's a sight you'll never forget. But you need to start making
plans now. It's always the 3rd weekend in August. Hotels and motels fill up
fast. The new 2002 site is not finished yet but check out these links of past
shows. These are the streets the General tested his muscle against the
competition. Ford/ Chry. Jim Wangers perfected the GTO on these streets with
Royal Pontiac. Lots of fun, lots of shows and endless cars of the past. Over 1
million people last year. It's supposed to be a one day event but it really
starts on Wed. before the weekend and goes on Sunday. Hope to see you there and
meet.

Yep, I
understand.  I shot the first coat of primer on the 66 that I'm working on
last night.  What an enormous sense of accomplishment it gives you after
looking at a multicolored thing for weeks while you fix dents.  It's almost
as good as sitting there watching the color coats dry after you put them on
having done paint prep for what seems like forever and swearing you'll never
paint another car yourself.  Lacquer paint jobs are very labor
intensive.  You'll definitely know how to wet sand by the time your done
:)

That is what I have seen as well. But I have also seen the antenna on the passenger side front and drivers side rear.   The SS I am buying has it on the drivers side front fender and is a vertical antenna. That is what made me wonder what the reason was that there are the  three different formats for the location of the antenna on the 64 Malibu SS. I know my first 64 had it on the passenger side front fender.  But I like the look of the car better with the antenna on the passenger side rear fender.

Some insight into part numbers.
Just because a part has a different part number does not necessarily mean
it's a different part altogether. The factory will change a part number in a
new year, they may add a bolt hole, remove a hole, different gauge steel,
different plant, different model car, well you get the point. But it's the
same part. (fit wise) So you really need an up to date dealer parts manual
to decipher everything.

SJ: To The FAA

Dear Sirs;

I have the solution for the prevention of hijackings, and at the same time
getting our airline industry back on its feet.

Since men of the Muslim religion are not allowed to look at naked women we
should replace all of our female flight attendants with strippers. Muslims
would be afraid to get on the planes for fear of seeing a naked woman, and
of course, every businessman in this country would start flying again in
hope of seeing a naked woman.

We would have no more hijackings, and the airline industry would have record
sales.

Now why didn't Congress think of this?

Sincerely,

Bill Clinton
