So, did anyone find a car for me? Ya know, a 71-2 SS convertible??? What do you guys think about an original SS vs. an SS that has a new crate motor in it? I've been looking for an original daily driver and I'm just wondering about the merits of having the option of fixing it up for show. Re: [Chevelle-List] 66 am/fm, multiplexier ?
Rick, I will take a look and appreciate the reply. I did email Joe earlier and got the part number for the multiplexer. I was trying to figure out if their are any multiplexer model differences with each production year these units were offered. The one I have the chance to purchase has 66 standard radio knobs and not the correct 66 multiplexer knobs. It also did not have a part number sticker anywhere on the housing. I really want to make sure I am getting the correct unit and would like to see how the 4 speaker arrangement is laid out in a stock Chevelle. Lastly not to mention the next step in trying to find these correct knobs in the future if I purchase the unit! I bet they will be fairly hard to dig up. Thanks again. Dwaine
RE: [Chevelle-List] Advancing Timing
Keith I personally would back it down just a tad. Although you can not hear spark knock or detonation at this point, as deposits build in the cylinders and on the back of the intake valves I'm quite sure it will develop. Are you already running a higher octane fuel? 93 or 94 octane ? Higher octane fuels burn slightly slower but more even, they are also harder to light up when cold, and produce cold problems running at first, but once warm well worth the extra price at the pump. One other thing to keep in mind, is keeping the carb properly adjusted and setup. Advancing the timing and running a leaner mix will enhance the chances of creating knock and detonation. Leaner mixes burn hotter and light off much easier by hot carbon build up and deposits. Having more burn time also helps create these deposit in forming. Lighting the mix off early also creates spark knock and detonation. Good luck Wayne 66 SS -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Keith CooperSent: Sunday, June 09, 2002 10:36 AMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Advancing Timing Wayne, I have it set at 16 BTDC and there is no knocking or detonation. Thanks fr the warm welcome back Rick I had a blast, got to meet a few fellow list members and Al & Dot McKenzie too. I took 2nd place in the slow drags, I'll beat that El Camino next year! I went to Music City Raceway Friday night along with about 100 other Chevelle-abrators. I think I may have smoked the tranny though :(. It's not shifting into 3rd gear the way it was, slipping off the line, and is leaking out the dipstick tube. It is also downshifting itself from 3rd to 2nd when i get on it and bouncing off the rev limiter (thank goodness for those). but all in all an awesome time, long drive from NJ, took us 14 hours to get home. Already looking forward to next year. Tom

Re: [Chevelle-List] Holley carburetor Question
I also agree that a 750 carb will work best. A 650 Holley will also work well with some tuning for a BBC with lower compression, weaker heads, and doesn't see much higher rpm's then 4000 or so. Definetly look for vacuum secondaries for a street car as well. I do have to chuckle a bit. Some people hate Holley's because they have no clue what they are doing on them. There are quite a few good books on Holley's. They aren't that complicated, although they are a more sanative tuning wise and on the older Holley's, tuning them can be a pain, but for true performance Holley, BG, or Demon seem to be the ticket. Edelbrocks are a great carb for someone not looking for super performance numbers, but wants a very easy carb to tune and one that does not need many additional adjustments IMO. I haven't had much luck tuning them for killer performance at all though, especially with higher compression and anything more then a mild to medium cam. What about the good old quad? Lots of guys put these down, but much like the Holleys, folks don't take the time to learn about them. They are very cheap and will nail you probably the best gas milage and drivability of any of the choices (although the Edel/Carter AFB's are close). I personally love them for a street car. The 780 cfm models work awsome for street BBC's. They can typically be found in need of a rebuild for under $50 and sometime they are thought to be just a plain-jane quad. I got my last one at a swap meet for $5! RE: [Chevelle-List] Advancing Timing
Dan, while some of your math is wrong (350 is a 4" bore, 3.48" stroke), your basically on the right track. There is a certain amount of time needed for the flame front to burn all of the air fuel mixture. Also, some might be surprised to learn that higher-octane fuel burns slower (although, I believe, more completely) than lower octane fuel, which is why advancing the timing often goes hand-in-hand with putting in some good gas. -Dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, June 08, 2002 11:17 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Advancing Timing Keith, Just a guess here, but even as low as 1500 RPM, the time it takes for a piston to go from 12 degrees BTDC to TDC has got to be milliseconds. So, if you fire it at say, 6 degrees BTDC, and figure the time it takes for the air/fuel mixture to fully ignite, there's a possibility that the piston may actually be on its way back down the cylinder bore before any power is applied, wasting some of the power stroke. Firing the plug earlier, at 12 degrees BTDC, gives you the time needed to fully ignite the charge while the piston is at or near the very beginning of the power stroke. Lets do the math. 1500 RPM equals 25 revolutions per second. That's 9000 degrees of travel every second. Assuming that a 350 mouse motor is a 4" stroke, ( I'm not sure ), 12 degrees BTDC equals roughly 1/8". That's 10.8 milliseconds before TDC. And that's at a fast idleimagine 4 or 5 thousand RPMs. OR, I could be way off base with these figures. I never thought about it before, and its the best answer I could come up with quickly. Take it easy, its nice outside. Dan McIntosh 65 Malibu - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
