[Chevelle-List] alternator and regulator

2002-06-20 Thread Robert Belz

My alternator on my 71 went south yesterday and I replaced it with another
SI type alternator as was on the car. My question is what happens when you
have an internally regulated alternator and still have the external
regulator hooked up. I found that a previous owner had done this and its
been working since I bought the car. I am aware of the Tech article on the
conversion (cut and splice) but if this will work no need to cut off the
plug and do the splice job. Especially if I decide to go all original again
some day. Input any one?

Also any listers sell the rubber boot that covers the wire that goes to the
battery terminal on the back of the alternator? I don't want to buy a little
part and get hosed on shipping and handling from one of the big resto.
places. I know it's a GM part I just don't have the part number to get it
locally.

[Chevelle-List] spedo correction

2002-06-20 Thread Robert Belz

I attempted to correct my speedometer the other day and found out I ran out
of choices for gears for my turbo 400. I had a 44 tooth and am still off
about 10% after my last rear gear change. I read the tech article that gave
a GM part no. 3932220 for a ratio adapter but checking with my dealer found
it to be no good. They gave me # 3950352 but I'm not sure if this is what I
need to make the correction. A local Speedometer shop has an after market
one but they want nearly $100.00 for it. Anyone have a cheaper solution to
this problem or used that #395052 part?
Thanks
Bob Belz

Bob
You may need to change the drive gear which is mounted on the tranny output shaft.
You need to drop the drive shaft, and pull the tailshaft (4 bolts) from the tranny to
gain access. Messy but not difficult. Then pull the old gear off. And as you do,
be looking for a small clip which holds the gear in place. Its tiny so be careful.
The first link below has a list of the gears available. The 400 uses large gear set.
The other linksmay help also. They all came from http://links.chevelles.net/links

[Chevelle-List] Chevelle-List] None Chevelle

2002-06-20 Thread rick schaefer

Does anyone have experience with the automatic tranny which is in a 1995 jeep
cherokee? Is it the same as in late model dodge trucks?

My wifes jeep is having problems with the lockup cutting in out as we travel down
the highway. It shakes the whole vehicle. Is the general setup (solenoid actuator)
the same as a GM 700/200 lockup? Any info on the long term dependability of this
tranny? We have 112K on it this is the first problem. Is a total rebuild justified
by this problem? Thanx for any light that you can shed.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Massive wheel hop. Why?

2002-06-20 Thread Mark Weber

Thanks all.

The rear suspension was tightened up with the body off the car so only a few
hundred pounds of frame (not much at all). I will try re torquing the bolts
with some load on it. I did however lube all parts of the bushings when I
put them in - there is no metal to polygraphite contact point without white
lithium grease on it. (In 20 miles so far I have not heard any squeaking.)

The new Delco gas charged shocks in the back are pretty stiff too, they are
probably not helping the rear end settle down.

Mine's similar to Tom's but a little different... I have the Global West
lower arms with the spherical bearing on the frame side and the Del-a-lum
bushings on the housing side, the stock upper arms are boxed and have the
original rubber bushings as per GW's instructions.

At the moment, there is no wheel hop with 500+ hp. Next week I should have
my new rear with posi in place and then we'll see if the wheel hop gremlin
rears its ugly head.

Someone else asked if the rear suspension bolts were tightened while the car
was off the ground. If it was, then I would suggest loosening all the bolts
and bounce the car a couple of times. Then tighten the bolts up with full
vehicle weight on the ground. Urethane bushings are very stiff and will
bind the rear suspension preventing it from articulating properly. If all
the bolts are tightened while the car is off the ground, the bushings will
bind even worse and most likely change the pinion angle.

I used the Hotchkis trailing arms on my 70, and made up a custom set of
support braces the go from the upper arms to the lower arms. The only
other
thing I have on mine is a set of stock replacement TRW springs, and the
stock
sway bar. I have no wheel hop whatsoever with this combo and 500 HP.

Is there anyone out there that's going to the MCC show this
weekend and is in need of a 4 row Optima core Desert Cooler radiator for a 66-67
Chevelle/El Camino?

If there is,I have one that's brand new and
stillin the box - U.S. Radiator part #10690. It'sfor
salefor a paltry $400. I can bring it to the show if anyone is
interested...

Thanks Rick,
I never thought about changing the drive gear. I'll have to look at it and
see what I have to work with and go from there. Also thanks for the links,
VERY GOOD INFO you provided that I wouldn't have found myself. I'm still on
the fence about using a ratio adapter, seems like it would be easier, we'll
see.
Thanks again.

[Chevelle-List] Ed Ford's 64 Malibu

2002-06-20 Thread John Nasta

I had a business trip to Philadelphia today, and I stopped by a customer's
house on the way back to deliver a large order. This is a story that some of
you guys will really appreciate. Ed is the only guy I have ever met who sold
his car and managed to get it back many years later (like 10+ by the way he
was talking about the age of some of the restifications and when *he* did
them). Anyway, Ed has a super cool 64 Malibu. It was taken off the frame
years ago, a roll cage was installed, and it was tubbed. The rear was
narrowed so that the quarters did not have to be cut at all. He also
installed a new tranny tunnel (heavy duty). Ed raced the car back then,
until he sold it to another guy who also raced it for many years. Ed
recently got the car back (sans drivetrain). Ed still has all the original
moldings, including the very elusive non-SS side body moldings. It has
recently been repainted white (nice job too) and will soon get a red
interior (except the seat, which is black and is set up for a 5-point
harness). Ed is doing a complete cosmetic resto on the exterior, including
all new and restored trim, and he is making the car street legal this time.
As you can imagine, this is a real PITA because so much original stuff is
gone (like the entire interior, dash, steering column, wiring, etc). This
car is going to be a very mean street car though and I'm sure Ed also plans
on taking it down the track a few times. The body paint work are excellent
and Ed is saying that the drive train will probably end up including
nitrous, because he doesn't want to put a blower on it. I hope some of you
guys get to see this car and meet Ed some time. He is a cool guy with a
serious 64 Malibu, and you hear so often about guys wishing they could find
the car they once had and buy it back, so here's a guy that did and is
bringing it back in his own way.
