[Chevelle-List] "Long" brand of shifters

2002-08-13 Thread Chevelle 69

Is anyone using the "Long" brand of shifters? I have heard many good
things about them, although finding them is harder than heck. Jegs
doesn't carry them and Summitt has stopped ..for some reason.

I did finally find them at:

One thing they are not is cheap! But heard nothing but good about the
quality. Is anyone using them for street use?

[Chevelle-List] Headers

2002-08-13 Thread Chevelle 69

Anyone using Dyno-max coated headers on their big block? JEG's has a
great price on them, but I am worried that I would be getting what I
paid for :) How's the fit? Any troubles changing spark plugs? Any
clearance problems or one pipe have to go over the frame as I have heard
some do?

Any recommendations on brand name ceramic coated headers and cost?

The best way to check is get the casting number off block in question and
check it on the Mortec site.. there are definitely some casting numbers
that can be either 2 or 4 bolt , 4 bolt being for the high HP version of the
engine and 2 bolt for the low HP version..375hp sb a 4 boltFWIW

Hey guys, are you'll sure about your geometry?

I've seen straight, 45 and 90 degree boots but never 135
or 180 degree ones. 180 degree would be so extreme
that the boot would bend into a "U" shape.

MSD wires/boots are bend-to-fit any angle you need.

Hi Richard,

I personally think you should stay away from Accel spark plug wires. I
prefer MSD Super Conductor wires. They're rated at only 40 ohms per foot
and you can get "bendable" boots allowing you to angle them for your
specific needs.

I've had the best luck with 135 degree boots with headers. Some 90's will
fit and some 180's will fit, but I haven't found 8 plugs yet that will work
with all 90's or all 180's. I have found that all 135 degree angles will
work. Personally, I like Taylor wires. They come in the 135 degree boot
and the plug boots are easy to grasp.

The model series will show if it was V8 or 6 but not what size V8 or 6.
Example for a base '64 Elky, 45380 was a 6-cyl and 45480 was V8 - the Custom
El Camino got a 45580 for a 6-cyl and 45680 for a V-8. The trim tag model
series should match that portion of the VIN.

2002-08-13 Thread aztechsteel

My brother & I recently placed an order for 7 items from OPG.
While the order was billed correctly, 4 items shipped were wrong, & 1 wasn't
shipped at all. In addition, the shipping address was incorrect, & the
stuff traveled all over Tucson for several days before it was located &
delivered.
When Bruce called OPG to report the mistakes, the sales rep on the telephone
insisted it was his fault & OPG had no responsibility to correct THEIR
mistakes! That was over 6 wks. Ago & it still isn't resolved.

  and their licensing

  Josh,

I agree pretty much 100%. But
I think a big part of the problem is the way these parts are manufactured. For
example, let's say you've got a set of trim forming dies - one for each wheel
lip molding. You send them out to a supplier in the stamping business - even a
very good one like Cosma - and tell them to run 6,000 sets of trim. They mount
the tools, feed in some material and start banging them out. They get to part
number 4,869 and some dork closes the press with a screwdriver between the die
set and destroys the left rear lip tool. The plant superintendent comes out,
looks things over, and tells the operator to yank the tools and put them back
on the rack until he can get the GM guy out there. So, they pull the tools and
ship the 4,868 sets they've cranked out up to that point.

A couple weeks later the GM
guy shows up, eyeballs the tool and mentally figures it'll cost $275,000 to
build a new one or $52,000 to fix the old one. Either number is out of line
with the profitability of the part so they drop the set of rear lip moldings
and continue to offer the fronts.

  I'm not saying this happened,
I'm saying that the tooling is getting swapped in and out of presses
constantly and that the operators make mistakes, tools get busted, or even
suppliers tell GM that they don't want to run the tools anymore because GM is
not ordering an economically feasible quantity. It's not that you can't make
money on the part - heck, we'll pay just about any price they name. It's that
the plant can not justify interrupting the flow of Toyota Camry bumper beams
just to load the tooling to run 1500 Chevelle bumpers. And you're right - GM
does not spend a lot of time looking for somebody to run the part - it's just
too far outside the mainstream of their business.

Personally Craig, I don't see GM as being very supportive of our hobby.
They continue the practice of discontinuing parts for our cars. Even worse,
they will discontinue a part from a set of parts. For intance wheel opening
moldings. They make fronts and discontinue the rears and vice versa. If they
were truly interested in supporting our hobby, they would do some research
and provide us with crucial VIN info for our cars and make a catalog of
parts that are still available for our cars. To take it further, I believe
they should bring back some or all of their parts for these cars and put the
Taiwan reproduction buisinesses out of the game completely. I believe they
have a hughe untapped resource that they fail to take advantage of. I don't
know about you but I'd be willing to pay more money for parts that came from
GM and fit and finish was correct, not just "GM Licensed". Not trying to
argue with you, just giving my perspective.

It is worth mentioning that GM is the
largest corporation in the world. I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but I
think we're talking about a $250 billion dollar organization. I think what
happens is that small manufacturers and distributors are not even on their
radar screen. GM does not have a whole lot of people assigned to the task
of seeking out small companies infringing on their copyrights and patents.
I'm not trying to start a bunch of hoopla here but we work with GM guys
all day long. It is not a flawless company but there are a lot of very
good people that work there. I'm just a bit reluctant to bash them
for being GM. When the day is done, they flat out own the rights to every
product they ever built. That they support our hobby at all is pretty
remarkable - they sure don't make any money on it. Seriously - you're
talking about maybe a few tens of millions of dollars at the absolute most
in a company of 250 billion. It's like one one-hundreth of one percent.
The only reason they bother with resto parts and crate engines and other
stuff is because there are a bunch of gearheads in the company and,

[Chevelle-List] Headers and spark plug wires

OK all,

plug wires. I'm working on a '69 Chevelle 396 SS 4-speed and installed
Hooker comp headers part# 2455. I recall reading about 90 degree and 135
degree boots for the plugs and need some direction. Local auto parts store
has a set of Accel 8.5 mm with straight and 90 degree boots for about $75.

Has anyone on the list used these? Any suggestions from any 396 guys?

RE: [Chevelle-List] Driveline vibes, baaaad vibes.

2002-08-13 Thread Craig A. Ellis

Thanks, Herb. Jim V. at Dynotech instructed me as follows: Install the
driveshaft and with the car at ride height disconnect at the rear u joint
and push the shaft as far into the trans as it will go. Mark the splined
shaft at the trans at then pull it back until the u joint seats. measure the
amount that it withdrew from the trans and if it is less than 3/4" the shaft
is too long, if more than 1" it is too short. BTW, he confirmed that too
long a driveshaft will cause a serious vibration at speed.

Go to this link and it has instructions on how to properly measure for a
driveshaft. There are three choices so you'll have to look at all three to
decide which set of instructions apply to your setup.

Yep, & we all know how those Toy-YO-YO's go through bumper's .
In Dallas they play ping-pong with each other on the freeways.

RE: [Chevelle-List] A note on GM and their licensing

2002-08-13 Thread Craig A. Ellis

Josh,

I agree pretty much 100%. But I
think a big part of the problem is the way these parts are manufactured. For
example, let's say you've got a set of trim forming dies - one for each wheel
lip molding.
The plant superintendent comes out,
looks things over, and tells the operator to yank the tools and put them back on
the rack until he can get the GM guy out there. So, they pull the tools and ship
the 4,868 sets they've cranked out up to that point.

A couple weeks later the GM guy
shows up, eyeballs the tool and mentally figures it'll cost $275,000 to build a
new one or $52,000 to fix the old one. Either number is out of line with the
profitability of the part so they drop the set of rear lip moldings and continue
to offer the fronts.

If they
were truly interested in supporting our hobby, they would do some research and
provide us with crucial VIN info for our cars and make a catalog of parts that
are still available for our cars. To take it further, I believe they should
bring back some or all of their parts for these cars and put the Taiwan
reproduction buisinesses out of the game completely. I believe they have a
hughe untapped resource that they fail to take advantage of. I don't know
about you but I'd be willing to pay more money for parts that came from GM and
fit and finish was correct, not just "GM Licensed". Not trying to argue with
  you, just giving my perspective.

and their licensing

It is worth mentioning that GM is the
largest corporation in the world. I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but I
think we're talking about a $250 billion dollar organization. I think what
happens is that small manufacturers and distributors are not even on their
radar screen. GM does not have a whole lot of people assigned to the task of
seeking out small companies infringing on their copyrights and patents. I'm
not trying to start a bunch of hoopla here but we work with GM guys all day
long. It is not a flawless company but there are a lot of very good
people that work there. I'm just a bit reluctant to bash them for being
GM. When the day is done, they flat out own the rights to every product they
ever built. That they support our hobby at all is pretty remarkable - they
sure don't make any money on it. Seriously - you're talking about maybe a
few tens of millions of dollars at the absolute most in a company of 250
billion. It's like one one-hundreth of one percent. The only reason they
bother with resto parts and crate engines and other stuff is because there
are a bunch of gearheads in the company and, frankly, it helps them sell
cars and trucks to the public. We need to hope that they never get an
eco-freak car hater at the top because you can bet your last dollar it will
all be over in the blink of an eye.

[Chevelle-List] Power steering leak

2002-08-13 Thread Richard Milkiewicz

While looking for an article on clutch vibrations I
ran across an article on rebuilding the steering box. The whole 9 yards.
Pictures and text. I'll scan it if anyone is interested. I'll scan in paint.
Smaller file and everyone should be able to open it. Send  your E-mail

2002-08-13 Thread Richard Milkiewicz

Craig, sorry, I'm not able to find the article on
the clutch vibration. But like you, this guy changed his whole drive line and
still had bad vibes. The article dealt with the whole clutch. Linkage to the
pressure plate. Long story short, he replaced the pressure plate and clutch
disc. No more vibration.
I'm going as a spectator because my ride is a least
a year away from being finished.
In the morning I'll be at 12 mile and Woodward,
north side of Woodward. I have a friend who is parking there with his wife. She
bought my Nova and he has a 36 Chevy. Biggest mistake I ever made was selling
that Nova. The Nova will be there and I want to see it again so I can get
sick.

  Rich,

  I'm keen to see
the article. U-joints are new and we've had them apart three times. In fact,
I've got the car sitting on the alignment hoist of a friends garage right now
with the driveshaft out and on it's way to CCI to make sure it's true &
perfectly balanced. They built it, BTW, and insisted I replace the pinion
flange. No change when the flange went in except the car was lighter by
  $200...

  Why as a
spectator? If I can get this car squared away, I'm going down there Wednesday
night - much nicer cruise than the Tokyo subway conditions on
  Saturday.

Craig, I read in CAR CRAFT one time that this
can be caused by the clutch. I'll try and find the article. Have you checked
the U joints? May have a cracked one. I'll be at the cruise, but as a
spectator this year. :o(

I have what feels like a driveline
vibration that comes in about 45 miles per hour and increases in intensity
until about 65 MPH when you're actually going so fast that the
frequency becomes so rapid it seems to go away. I don't think it
actually goes away, just feels not-so-bad, if you know what I
  mean.
It is not engine RPM related - it occurs
in second, third or fourth at the same speed and continues if you
disengage the clutch and put the trans in neutral. So, it is not engine
  balance related.
I have new Moser axles, US Gear ring
& pinion (3.42), new posi clutch pack, new pinion flange, new
driveshaft and it has done the exact same thing with two completely
different sets of tires and wheels. Also, it is not in the front
  end.
I'm really at a loss here - the Detroit
Dreamcruise is spooling up to max output right now and I can't motor down
the highway. (By the way, the cruising is so heavy every night this week
that the police will shut Woodward Avenue down on some nights. On
Saturday, you're talking a million spectators minimum. It is said to be
the largest motorsports event in the world, bar none, and it's all muscle
cars, hotrods, and other gearhead doodah.)
If anyone has any ideas, I am sure
  enough ready to listen.
