RE: [Chevelle-List] Bellhousing question...

2002-08-16 Thread Chevelle 69

Gents,
I know this one. It's weird, but true..I know because I have one!

In the beginning of the 80's GM started buying "New Process" trannies
from Chrysler and made the 4th gear in these trannies less than a 1:1
ratio to improve gas milage and I assume to meet the new tougher federal
fuel economy requirements. Just a guess on why here. So the bolt pattern
fits on GM engines and supposedly this thing will swap out straight with
a TH350 because they are the same exact length when all is said and
done...or within a 1/4 inch or so, from what I have read.

In any case, up until somewhere between the mid and late 80's these 4
speed trannys were used in the Chevy Trucks. They are obviously beefier
in at least some respects than a car tranny. How much and in what ways I
am not sure, not an expert on them here, but I do have some resources on
the net bookmarked on them.

I have that same exact bellhousing or I might be bidding on that one. I
bought it for the fact that I was told it was a stronger tranny AND the
fact that 4th gear is an overdrivewill make for better mileage on
long trips to car shows. I don't have mine in yet, and have yet to find
someone that have put one in and has used it yet. Several are in the
process of doing so however.

I find it interesting because the 396 engine I bought came out of a
truck as well. Now all I need is a truck posi unit for the rear and I
can really "HAUL" in my Chevelle :)

Steve

[Chevelle-List] Bellhousing question...

2002-08-16 Thread NoNeck

I am cleaning out my garage because we are moving, and I'm listing a bunch
of stuff on Ebay. I am getting rid of an aluminum bellhousing that I had on my
454 with 11 inch clutch. All the ones on ebay are 681's, but this is part number
460486. Anybody know anyhting about this bell? I thought only the 681's were for
the big clutch, but this one looks almost identical to the 681. I believe it was
from a 72 Chevelle originally but I cant find any other casting numbers on it.
Even the 460486 seems like a weird number as it is a different configurarion
than usual .Didn't most Chevy numbers start with 3? and have 7 digits? If anyone
here is interested, I have pics. I'll take any reasonable offer also.
Thanks!

I'm going to send them back, but the real problem is where to get one that
works. The one I had on there (that split out) was a much softer compound
and had a much different shape. I don't know what the application is for the
one they sent me, but it's sure not a Chevelle...

That's exactly right. Which is also why, IMHO, if you have a Canadian built

It's things like that (fake tags) that make it easier to fake a rare car or
options on a car. Maybe that's why some of those who claim to have some of
those codes won't divulge them. Some people could use the codes to
authenticate their cars and others can screw you with the same info.

[Chevelle-List] rear end setup

2002-08-16 Thread vmckague

Guys , maybe someone can help me out. On my 64 El
Camino I'm trying to find out what the rear end came out of. My friend says
it not a 64 but an 80 model as someone has written 80 on the rear end cover
with one of those yellow markers used in junk yards. It is a 10 bolt posi.
I wonder where the numbers whould be on it and if I could find them how would I
know where to look to find out what kind of car it came out of? He
thinks maybe grand prix . Any ideas? Thanks , Vernon
