Hi!

It's a (mostly) stock inline 6. I'm building it myself w/ a kit from
B&M. I don't expect that my engine will produce dangerous amounts of
power - I'm doing this swap to get away from 15 mpg. :-) It's my
daily driver, not a race car by any means.

From talking to local trans shops, opinions seem to vary widely.
Some say they're rubbish all the time, some say post-86 are better,
some say any year makes for a good foundation. Mine's out of a 90
Caprice with a 5 liter, for what it's worth. For 'real' power,
regardless of your definition of that, everyone here recommends a
700-R4. I'm not making 'real' power, and I'm not very keen on
hacking up my floorpan to make a 700-R4 fit, so this was my only
option for an OD trans.

I didn't catch this one the first time...200's are very weak transmissions...even built they can bite it hard with any real HP in front...hope you've got the GN 8.5"..they can handle a little more HP...if not plan on getting it replaced soon

  Steve,
Last winter I patched a couple spots on my floor,
  I used a    4 1/2" grinder fitted with a cut off wheel. I
drilled a series of holes from under the vehicle about 1/2" away from the body
braces, cut up to these holes from the top, and then connected the dots. What
this accomplished was getting the old pan out without nicking the braces. You
will have a section of floor left attached to the braces, which is spot welded
at the factory. If you then grab the remaining floor and wiggle it up and
down, you will start to see the spot welds appear. Remove the cut off wheel
from the grinder and replace with the grinding wheel. Grind them there spot
welds till they're gone. You still need to cut along the sill and the trans

It will be nice to make a little money while doing my hobby. Since we are

Joe the one I am building the car for was one of

Invest in a spot weld cutter ( really a glorified
mini hole saw ). From the top a quick wire brushing will reveal where the spot
welds between the floor pans and braces are. Center punch in the center of the
spot weld. Attach the spot weld cutter to your hand drill and center into the
center punch mark. Most spot weld cutters have a depth guage built in so that
you only drill deep enough to cut thru the floor not into the brace. What this
accomplishes is to drill around the spot weld leaving only it not the floor
still attached to the brace. Repeat on all spot welds in the affected area. Then
cut out the rusted floor area and lift out the section. You'll now need to grind
the spot weld "buttons" off the brace.
Measure and cut the new floor to match the opening,
insert it into the opening and draw lines where it meets the braces. Now is
asimilated the original. Drill holes ( about 3/8" ) into the new floor section
approx where the original "buttons" where. Drop the section back in place and
weld the floor section to the brace by filling in the holes.
This makes a nice neat job.
Most supply houses should have spot weld cutters.
Till you get the hang of it you may break some so buy extra replacement
cutters. Try looking at eastwoodcompany.com and then look under welding tools
for a picture and an idea on pricing. It's really not that hard, just time
consuming, but it makes a real neat job.

Re: [Chevelle-List] ignition and wiper switch tools

2002-09-02 Thread Brian

I think we are, at
least pretty close. The paper clip is used to get the key cylinder out of the
switch assembly. The bezel nut which has three groves around the outside, holds
the switch to the dash. I would think since there are three groves that there
might be a tool with the same grove pattern, but I haven't seen it (yet). The
wiper switch on mine has two small holes, no screw driver slot. The nut on my
headlight switch has a screw driver slot. I can "rig" tools that'll do the job
almost all the way but I'd like to try to find the actual tools if I
can.

Maybe we are not
talking about the same thing, but on my 67 we did not buy any special tools. We
used a screw driver on the wiper switch(and of course the button on the bottom
of the switch) and a paper clip on the ignition bezel.

[Chevelle-List] Cheap primer - take the chance?

2002-09-02 Thread Chevelle 69
Title: Message

I went
to a locale paint distributor for one of the major brands. I thought the price
was exceptional. While the paint he carries is brand name and a registered
distributor, the brand of primer he gave me is not from that company. It seems
to be locally made. It probably saved me over $200 from a major brand
name.

I
bought 1 gal. of self etching primer/filler (+1 Gal
Catlyst)

 and

1 Gal
2K Catalyst Urethane Primer/Surfacer with 32 oz. 2-K
Activator.

+ 1
Gal  Laquer thinner.

The
place was booming with business from local paint/body shops. I had to wait
in line. That could be both good and bad.

Should
I have opted for the epoxy primer? What would that have gained me over what I
have? I am still trying to make up my mind if I am going to try to spray
the color and clear coat, or if I am going to spring for a pro to do it. I have
never painted a car before.

What I
am worried about, is what if I put a lot into a pro and have cheap primer cause
me problems? Should I worry? Should I take it back and go get the name brand
stuff?
