Re: [Chevelle-List] Why OPG Sucks

2002-11-17 Thread vmckague
I have been following this tread from the start and have found out alot of
good stuff. To me the best thing, hands down, is customer service. With the
big companys you email them and they might ,just might, get back to you in a
day or two. With John Nasta I have emailed him many times and I always get
an answer back within a hour. Even on Sat. or Sun. Now that means more to me
than anything. Vernon

Geez Tom, I almost forgot that this thread started with you. You are
absolutely right that there is no reason to charge insurance on a shipment
under $100. No question about it.

About the backorders, sometimes it's not the vendor's fault. I just
ordered
a set of console mounting brackets for a customer and was told by the
supplier that they were in stock. Then I got my order and the brackets
weren't there but I was charged for them. The item was circled and hand
and
the words not available at this time were hand-written on the invoice.
It
ended up taking about 3 weeks to get the brackets. The supplier told me
that
it was because of a I.D. (inventory discrepancy) problem. They showed on
their computer that the brackets were in, but when they physically
checked,
 they weren't really there.

Anyway, not making excuses, but sometimes things happen that are not the
vendor's fault. You are a good customer to Ground Up and they show their
appreciation by giving you a break. That's the way it should be. I give
breaks to good customers as well.

This is a highly competitive business (especially for the smaller
players),
and let's face it, most of the vendors are selling pretty much the same
stuff (of course there are exceptions). In most cases, the only way to
differentiate one company from the next is price and service. Usually the
smaller shops will bend more for a good customer, because let's face it,
the
bigger shops have no idea who you are, and you are talking with somebody
whose job is to answer phones.

If I may offer my insight on shipping here since the company I work for
ships with UPS every day and at least with $200 per day. UPS as well as
FedEx have shipping systems that are installed within the shipping area of
the company, we have one from UPS and it generates the shipping label and
receipt and you slap it on the box and off it goes when the UPS driver
comes
at the end of the business day. It takes what a whole what 2 minutes to
type it up in a UPS system, and even less time than that for previous
customers since it automatically saves the information in a database so
you
do not have to retype it everytime, and generally this is what shippers
are
 paid to do anyways.
I understand where John is coming from. Being a small business will
endure
more of a cost if they need to have an employee leave the premisis to ship
 an item.
We are a relatively(I use this term very loosely)small company (employee
wise)and get a nice discount from UPS. We charge the actual shipping
charges. It wasn't the $8 shipping charge that pissed me off, it was the
BS
$5 insurance fee. UPS has no charge for insurance on the first $99 of the
declared value and the damn paint only cost $20 so ??? I
feel I need a chastity belt when I order something from them b/c I don't
like getting raped. This is why I order everything from Ground Up, I get
free shipping from them and since they are in NYC, I get my parts the next
day, that's awesome customer service, personally speaking. I guess that
the
amount of money I spend with them comes into effect as well. Oh yeah, I
remember OPG backordering stuff on me before and not letting me know about
it, there's another strike against them.
I simply wanted to to know where and how they get off doing this.

My 1967 site, http://www.team67.com, is up and running for the
moment - just checked it. I think it'll be down next week as my
host is changing vendors and HIS IP will change. I'll have to
wait until that is completed before I can submit my new IP addr to
my domain name holder. The same thing will happen to
http://www.midwestchevelles.com since they are both hosted by the
same person. However, http://www.dalesplace.com should NOT be
affected.

Danny - welcome to the Chevelle List and I know you'll find tons
of information and lots of people willing to help and pass on

I'm away for the weekend and using my email via the net instead of
my home system, so I have to apologize for the site links not

Year One sitting there. Naturally the first thing my wife says is "Now
what did you order?" "Nothing honey, I swear, what is it?" I
reply.

Apparently, while at the Bristol Bash I won second place in the Muscle

Either way, Year One sent me a gift certificate for $100 and a cool

that reminds me
I put new steel repro inner fenders in both my 70 and most recently the 69. The right (passenger) ones fit like a glove. The left (driver) ones I had to wrestle to get into place. I came to find out later, from others I know, that is just the way they are, even with GM ones.

Danny,

Welcome to the list. It is a great resource. In
addition to Dale's websites (which are some of the best), you can find useful
info and tech articles at:

http://www.chevelles.net/
http://superchevy-web.com/
http://www.chevelles.com/
http://www.chevelles.com/aces/
http://www.employees.org/~redneck/carstuff/
http://www.mail-archive.com/chevelle-list@chevelles.net/
http://www.chevytalk.com/

I have a 67SS also. I recently changed my rear
suspension trailing arm, braces, springs and shocks. I went with Edelbrock
boxed trailing arms with polyurethane bushings, Edelbrock braces, Edelbrock IAS
Performer shocks and Hotchkis 1" lowering springs (after waiting 4 months for
Edelbrock to ship my original spring order - it never happened). The ride is
good. I haven't had the opportunity to check out the traction, yet.

I have the complementary shocks and springs for the
front. I'll put them in over the winter. I put standard rubber bushings in the
front last year and I'm happy with them.

The bushings, springs and shocks werre pretty much
shot when I bought the car, so any change was going to be an improvement. There
may be better choices and combinations for your needs, but I'm satisfied with my
choices.

Good luck with your restoration.

Mike

way to go with both front and rear. It will be driven on weekends to events
and an occasional drag race at the Baytown strip. I want the ride to

Apparently, while at the Bristol Bash I won second place in the Muscle on

Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] Why OPG Sucks

There's the whole problem. People don't want to pay $8 UPS to send a package
of clips. Instead they want the seller to drive (or walk in my case) to the
post office, stand in line for a half hour, and then charge you less. In my
case, I lose about one and a half hours every time I have to go to the post
office. I realize that nobody wants to pay for that time. If I send an
employee, I lose that much time and I'm paying for it. If I go myself, it
only costs me the time, but time is also money. Then if you don't have the
time, and things go out a bit late because you haven't had time to get to
the post office, customers get mad because the turnaround time is not fast
enough for their taste. Yet they don't want to pay for the faster, easier
method.

I do it because I know what the customers want, and the fact is that it just
makes it that much harder for me to run my business, and to compete against
the bigger players who will not stand in line for you at the post office to
save you money at their own expense. I can easily see why companies will
send a small pack of clips that could have been mailed for $2 via UPS for
$8.

Also, what makes you think that distributors get packing materials any
cheaper than anybody else? Most people who sell on ebay use some old shoebox
whereas somebody who is shipping all the time has to buy boxes. You might be
surprised how much boxes cost. Also, most ebay sellers pack their own boxes
whereas distributors have to pay somebody to pack boxes. I try to save money
by re-using boxes and cutting big boxes down into smaller ones, but once
again the latter is time that nobody wants to pay for.

I totally feel for you guys and I've said many times before that this is one
of the reasons I went into the business. I was a customer in this business
for many years before I became a vendor, so I know what the customers want,
and try my best to make it that way and still compete against the people who
don't care how much you pay for shipping, as long as it saves them time and
money.

John Nasta

-Original Message-
snip
for a distributor, usually the courier comes to them, and packaging costs
should be minimal. I bought windshield molding clips for my (ex)65 Malibu,
which they could have mailed in an envelope, but UPS'd them to the tune of
$8. But as long as we pay it and keep coming back for more, they have no
reason to change their ways.

[Chevelle-List] Airco air conditioing discounts?

2002-11-17 Thread Chevelle 69

I received an e-mail in my club web page e-mail account from a company
called Airco in Pamona Calif. I know nothing about them whatsoever. They
are offering club discounts to our club members that can at times be
below wholesale.

Does anyone have any experience dealing with them? What's the quality
like? I was thinking about going with an aftermarket kit myself, but if
they have the right prices and I can get the same things for less ...

Anyone deal with them?

There are two companies, both right here in the US, contracting to have the

There is a third company (also right here in the US) that makes pretty much
all of the patch panels (lower fender patches, lower door patches, lower

[Chevelle-List] Trim Parts - Made in America

2002-11-17 Thread Chevelle 69
John,
While I haven't been on the tour YET, Trim Parts has a fairly
large plant here in Ohio. I know they hold a yearly open house/cruise-in
of classic cars. I have seen pictures of the event and almost went last
year. I am hoping to go this year and I have been by the plant and
verified with my own eyes it does exist :)

Hopefully we will get our new Chevelle Club to participate in their open
house next year as it's in our club area for recruitment.

I won't swear that every last part is made there but at this time that's
my impression after seeing their web site and catalog.

I had an aunt that worked at a similar place that makes plastic parts
for new cars. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of parts
manufacturers, retailers, and support businesses in this area, home of
Delco and Charles Kettering, inventor of the starter. Not to mention
Moraine assembly plant and some more GM plants, maybe Fisher Body?
Chrysler, and I think even Fo** in the area.

Well it's a sure thing that nothing beats NOS stuff, but it's hard to find usually and very expensive. Most of us, at least I cannot, afford to pay the price for it when it is available. I have heard the best feedback about the stuff the Goodmark sells. I personally have had panels fit, and ones that didn't. My worst experiences have been with replacement 1/4 skins. If I could go back, I would get the full repro 1/4 instead of the skins.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Re: Repro Sheetmetal...

2002-11-17 Thread John Nasta
p.s. I also just sold a 70-72 non-functional SS hood from Goodmark and the
customer said it did not fit right. The customer was a body shop and the guy
told me he had been in the business 12 years and the hood was not made
right. He ended up taking the skin off the frame and cutting it down some in
the back where it was too wide, and ten welding the skin back onto the
frame. He said that in the long run it turned out dine, but only because he
really knows what he is doing.

The resolution was that Goodmark gave me the name and number of their
research and development guy to pass on to the customer. They spoke about
exactly what was going on with the fit, and Goodmark offered to either send
another hood or replace it with other parts. The customer figured he could
fix the hood and that another one might have the same exact problem, so he
opted for other parts. I have to say that Goodmark followed through nicely
even though their was a problem. The customer has since ordered more stuff
from me and told me that he is very satisfied with what Goodmark sent him to
make up for the hood.

So far this is the only problem I have had with sheet metal.

Well, I'm outta here for the night. I promised myself that I would not sit
up late again tonight writing emails. I have too much to get done tomorrow
and I'd like to be bright eyed and bushy tailed as they say. Sunday is the
only day that I ever even consider taking off, and this was a nice relaxing
day watching the Giants with a couple of old buddies.

padding, headliner, seat, swap out that doofy steering wheel, install the
forward lighting engine harnesses (from MH), complete exhaust, brakes all
around (for good measure), rear shocks springs (front steering

Jason, the
panel under the window is the only piece that my body man had to hassle a bit
with on my 69 El Camino. It has to be cut to size and it does not come with the
rivets that the molding clips attach to. He had to tap holes and thread little
screws into it and tack-weld them from the back so that there would be some
studs to attach the molding clips to. He said that was very tedious.

Now I'm

Customer service. I have worked for years for a very small service
company that does most of its business mail-order. If something went
wrong with a job, we called or e-mailed the customer. If they asked for
something we did not provide, we called or e-mailed them. If something
was backordered, we called or e-mailed them. We never advertised
anywhere and did not need to. Customer service kept us in business.

Geez Tom, I almost forgot that this thread started with you. You are
absolutely right that there is no reason to charge insurance on a
shipment

They showed
on
their computer that the brackets were in, but when they physically
checked,
they weren't really there.

Usually
the
smaller shops will bend more for a good customer, because let's face it,
the
bigger shops have no idea who you are, and you are talking with somebody
whose job is to answer phones.

If I may offer my insight on shipping here since the company I work for
ships with UPS every day and at least with $200 per day. UPS as well as
FedEx have shipping systems that are installed within the shipping area
of
the company, we have one from UPS and it generates the shipping label
and
receipt and you slap it on the box and off it goes when the UPS driver
comes
at the end of the business day. It takes what a whole what 2 minutes to
type it up in a UPS system, and even less time than that for previous
customers since it automatically saves the information in a database so
you
do not have to retype it everytime, and generally this is what shippers
are
paid to do anyways.
I understand where John is coming from. Being a small business will
endure
more of a cost if they need to have an employee leave the premisis to
ship
an item.
We are a relatively(I use this term very loosely)small company
(employee
wise)and get a nice discount from UPS. We charge the actual shipping
charges. It wasn't the $8 shipping charge that pissed me off, it was
the BS
$5 insurance fee. UPS has no charge for insurance on the first $99 of
the
declared value and the damn paint only cost $20 so ???
I
feel I need a chastity belt when I order something from them b/c I don't
like getting raped. This is why I order everything from Ground Up, I
get
free shipping from them and since they are in NYC, I get my parts the
next
day, that's awesome customer service, personally speaking. I guess that
the
amount of money I spend with them comes into effect as well. Oh yeah, I
remember OPG backordering stuff on me before and not letting me know
about
it, there's another strike against them.
I simply wanted to to know where and how they get off doing this.

Tom

Gents, I think what we are seeing is what my partner calls the gen-x
ethic. It's all about what you can sneak by somebody. Restoration parts
companies feel competition forces them to do it. They advertise
bargain basement prices and make up profit margin on SH. We bought a
computer from Gateway a few weeks ago. They sent the wrong one and are
forcing us to pay shipping to send it back. That's $150 round trip to
get rid of their mistake. They can get away with it because they've
already charged your credit card and they know the card companies will
not back you up - they do too much business with them to risk it. That's
what my partner calls the gen-x ethic. It's all about what you can get
away with. When I asked Gateway why they don't disclose this shipping
thing they said because we don't have to. Now that's bold, people.

Ok, I need to vent here a little.
I ordered 2 cans of paint from OPG last week, paint cost like $12 per
can, no biggie. I just got it today and I was looking over the packing
list. Where the hell do they get off charging $4.75 for 2 cans of paint
that cost $24? I know UPS and FedEx charges very well since I work with
them everyday. There is no way that it costs almost $5 to insure
something that is that cheap. The insurance charge for something that
cheap is free since everything is insured at least up to $100. So let's
see here, $4.75 insurance plus $8.95 for shipping is $13.70, i just
shipped a 20 pound package to Canada with an insured value of $200
cheaper than that amount. UNBELIEVABLE Needless to say they will
be getting a phone call tomorrow, what a freakin rip off. Ok I'm going
back to watching my movie now.

I have been doing bodywork for almost 30 yrs. now and in my experience
there are no perfect panels. Even new sheetmetal from the Big 3 has to have some
rework done on it before it's perfect. The thing to remember is you get what you
pay for. If your buying 1/4's buy the full quarter , they always fit better than
skins but they will still need some massaging to fit.
Patch Panels are the worst, Partial skins are better, Full skinsare
even better Full Panels are even better FactoryNOS is
