It'll bolt right up to your GM bellhousing, use your clutch components (fork, linkages, 26 spline clutch, bearings, etc)! It has a 0.62 6th, is rated at 400 ft/lbs. The 6 speeds typically require more tunnel surgery, as it's a larger transmission. And the shifter location is 5-7 rearward of the Muncie shifter location. The TREMEC 5sp is rated higher at up to 525 ft/lbs,and will fit in the '68 and new GM cars without much, or any, tunnel work. The shifter is 2.75 rearward of the Muncie shifter. The 5speeds are raced regularly, drag and road racing, but I've not heard of too many 6speeds being raced. The point being that the 5sp will likely last longer behind a BB. RE: [Chevelle-List] Jack Stand Safety
Good point about never working under the car alone. Although if the car does fall on you, having somebody else there to watch is not necessarily going to save your life. Also, the cheapo jack stands have a triangular base and are made of bent sheet metal. Those things are an accident waiting to happen. Good jack stands have a rectangular base and are made of cast iron. I had my El Camino on 4 (good quality) jack stands for two years and there was no problem to have it sitting there. I didnt work under it though w/o putting a good hydraulic floor jack near where I was working as a failsafe. There's no such thing as being too careful in this situation. John Nasta -Original Message- john: i really think the jackstand we had as kids 30 + years ago were POS. the new style are far superior to the old ones. personally if I'm under the car i jack up the car high enough to put blocks (4 x 12 about 12 inches long) under the tires. i put as many as i need (4 x being 3 1/2 inches) and then i let the car down on jack stands just to the point where there is a load on the stands and the tires wont turn. Re: [Chevelle-List] Jack Stand Safety
At my job,we use jack stands and short sections of railroad ties(12" long or so) to chock and block equipment. Clint HooperLT5 Registry DirectorWichita Falls,Tx(940) 855-6636'91 ZR-1 Callaway AerobodyTX TAGS: USA ZR1http://www.LT5Registry.net/'69 El Camino Pro Street - Original Message - From: John Nasta An object falls when its center of gravity exceeds its base. The problem with jack stands is that they have a very small base, and by raising the car onto 4 jack stands, you are raising the center of gravity AND putting it on a smaller base at the same time. Also, jack stands will sink into things like asphalt, causing the weight to shift. You can get away with it if it is a level cement surface. My El Camino was on 4 jack stands for 2 years. During that time, I never got under it. It was really only on stands because the tires did not hold air and I didn't want the aluminum rims to be supporting the car for that long. Putting the front on a good set of ramps and the back on stands is MUCH safer. When I was a teenager, a guy a couple of blocks away was killed because he was under his car while it was on 4 jack stands. Sure, you might be able to get away with it, but the price you pay if it doesn't work out is way too high. I would recommend that you get a good set of heavy-duty ramps with removable inclines, and one set of jack stands. JMO, John Nasta

One more thought. If you do get a good set of ramps w/ removable inclines, it is a good idea to put the incline panels on the drivers' seat after removing them. That way you'll never sit down and attempt to back the car off the stands w/o the incline panels in place. It's a good way to remind yourself that they have to be put back before you move the car. Are you sure they were shaved? Maybe the entire quarter panels were replaced. The replacement panels do not come w/ the marker light holes cut out. Note that the original panel has the hole in: http://johnnasta.com/elcamino/pages/MVC-633S.htm and the replacement panel does not in: http://johnnasta.com/elcamino/pages/MVC-637S.htm In my case, the hole will be cut in the new panel to match the original. Thanks. That's what I thought. 69-72s have reflectors in the bumper where the 68 backup lights are, but it is the same bumper. The 69-72 tailgate is a different p/n from the 68 because of the backup lights (or absence thereof respectively). You really need the 6th number in the VIN. That's the one that indicates the model year. The first five would be 13380, 13480, 13580 or 13680 depending on a standard or custom Elky and 6-Cyl or V-8. Re: [Chevelle-List] Electrical problem...UPDATE
Well.. thanks for all the help so far.. I seem to have isolated the problem to the wiring harness that runs to the back of the car... I unplug that and the dash lights work.. I unplugged the rear lights from the other side of the harness and the fuse still blows... So if my logic is correct the problem is in that wire somewhere The bummer thing is that I have sound deadening material and it could be nasty finding the problem :) Larry - Original Message - From: Richard Milkiewicz [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, November 28, 2002 8:22 AM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Electrical problem... A good tip to save fuses is to get a flasher (like the one that goes in the fuse block or hangs somewhere under the dash) and wire some spade lugs to it and make it where it can be attached to the two ends where the fuse plugs into. This will make the flasher click if there is a short. When the short is found, (by unplugging different harnesses), the flasher will go silent and you will know that you have located the place where the short was. And you saved a lot of blown fuses.. We both have 136809s. My 7th digit is a B and Clint's is a K. What does the 7th digit (letter) mean? Does that indicate which plant it was made in? I would assume that the last 6 digits are the plant sequential number. For that matter, what do the 3, 4, 5, and 6 in the third digit mean? I looked into all of this on my Oldsmobiles but am still not familiar with all the ins outs of the VIN body tag on my El Camino yet. Mine originally cane w/ a 350, but I honestly don't know if it was a standard or custom, and what the differences are between the two. That info would be helpful. B is for Baltimore and K is for Kansas City. 1 = Chevrolet 33 = Std 6-cyl Elky 34 = Std V-8 Elky 35 = Custom 6-cyl Elky 36 = Custom V-8 Elky 80 = 2-dr sedan pickup (Elky) 0-9 = Year Letter = Assembly plant Next numbers in VIN are sequential plant numbers Custom Elkys had better trim and interior - like the difference between a 300/300 Deluxe and Malibu. Custom got the wood grain tailgate, wood grain dash strip, better seats, etc. See http://www.team67.com/1967/gallery/brochures/ec-5.jpg for an Elky brochure Dale McIntosh -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of John Nasta Sent: Sunday, December 01, 2002 9:50 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] '69 Elky Pro Street We both have 136809s.
