 Sure, there is a GM Aftermarket T56 available for about
 $1976.00. It'll bolt right up to your GM bellhousing, use
 your clutch components (fork, linkages, 26
 spline clutch, bearings, etc)! It has a 0.62 6th, is rated at 400
 ft/lbs.

 The 6 speeds typically require more tunnel surgery, as it's a
 larger transmission. And the shifter location is 5-7
 rearward of the Muncie shifter location.

 The TREMEC 5sp is rated higher at up to 525 ft/lbs,and will
 fit in the '68 and new GM cars without much, or any, tunnel
 work. The shifter is 2.75 rearward of the Muncie shifter.

Good point about never working under the car alone. Although
if the car does fall on you, having somebody else there to watch is not necessarily
going to save your life.

Also, the
cheapo jack stands have a triangular base and are made of bent sheet metal. Those
things are an accident waiting to happen. Good jack stands have a rectangular
base and are made of cast iron.

I had my
El Camino on 4 (good quality) jack stands for two years and there was no
problem to have it sitting there. I didnt work under it though w/o putting a
good hydraulic floor jack near where I was working as a failsafe. There's no
such thing as being too careful in this situation.

  An
  object falls when its center of gravity exceeds its base. The problem with
  jack stands is that they have a very small base, and by raising the car onto 4
  jack stands, you are raising the center of gravity AND putting it on a smaller
  base at the same time. Also, jack stands will sink into things like asphalt,
  causing the weight to shift. You can get away with it if it is a level cement
  surface. My El Camino was on 4 jack stands for 2 years. During that time, I
  never got under it. It was really only on stands because the tires did not
  hold air and I didn't want the aluminum rims to be supporting the car for that
  long. Putting the front on a good set of ramps and the back on stands is MUCH
  safer. When I was a teenager, a guy a couple of blocks away was killed because
  he was under his car while it was on 4 jack stands. Sure, you might be able to
  get away with it, but the price you pay if it doesn't work out is way too
  high. I would recommend that you get a good set of heavy-duty ramps with
  removable inclines, and one set of jack
  stands.

One more thought. If you do get a good set of ramps w/
removable inclines, it is a good idea to put the incline panels on the drivers'
seat after removing them. That way you'll never sit down and attempt to back
the car off the stands w/o the incline panels in place. It's a good way to
remind yourself that they have to be put back before you move the car.

Are you sure they were shaved? Maybe the entire quarter panels were
replaced. The replacement panels do not come w/ the marker light holes cut
out.

Note that the original panel has the hole in:

and the replacement panel does not in:

You really need the 6th number in the VIN. That's the one that
indicates the model year. The first five would be 13380, 13480, 13580

Re: [Chevelle-List] Electrical problem...UPDATE

2002-12-01 Thread Larry Brown
Well.. thanks for all the help so far.. I seem to have isolated the
problem to the wiring harness that runs to the back of the car... I unplug
that and the dash lights work.. I unplugged the rear lights from the other
side of the harness and the fuse still blows... So if my logic is correct
the problem is in that wire somewhere The bummer thing is that I have
sound deadening material and it could be nasty finding the problem :)

A good tip to save fuses is to get a flasher (like the one that goes in the
fuse block or hangs somewhere under the dash) and wire some spade lugs to it
and make it where it can be attached to the two ends where the fuse plugs
into. This will make the flasher click if there is a short. When the short
is found, (by unplugging different harnesses), the flasher will go silent
and you will know that you have located the place where the short was. And
you saved a lot of blown fuses..

: One of the ways I track stuff down is to unplug the harnesses.
:
: 1.Most have a plug that goes to the harness under the carpet which feeds
the
: trunk, try that first and put in fuse.
:
: 2. If it holds try the plug in the trunk (plug the one under dash back
: together).
: Unplug and put in fuse. If fuse holds then check out back harness. Light
: bulbs can also short out if they quit the wrong way.

to
 it. I hope we both get lots of enjoyment out of them. That's the main
thing.

Thanks Jason. Do you know what the differences are between the standard and
custom models?

[Chevelle-List] 454 Questions

2002-12-01 Thread Dave Benjamin

I was cleaning up the motor today and it was
originally blue? Did they come in blue?
I am curious what all the stats are? I also found
another set of numbers above timing chain cover?

Front of motor 79B530317

Back of block 14015445

Above timing chain 10615 TRU

Heads 346236

It was also casted into the block on the
back(transmissionarea).
HIGH PER
PASS

Please forgive me for stupid Questions, but first
time doing a BB.
Thank you

RE: [Chevelle-List] '69 Elky Pro Street

2002-12-01 Thread Dale McIntosh
B is for Baltimore and K is for Kansas City.

1 = Chevrolet
33 = Std 6-cyl Elky
34 = Std V-8 Elky
35 = Custom 6-cyl Elky
36 = Custom V-8 Elky
80 = 2-dr sedan pickup (Elky)
0-9 = Year
Letter = Assembly plant
Next numbers in VIN are sequential plant numbers

Custom Elkys had better trim and interior - like the difference between
a 300/300 Deluxe and Malibu. Custom got the wood grain tailgate, wood
grain dash strip, better seats, etc. See
http://www.team67.com/1967/gallery/brochures/ec-5.jpg for an Elky
brochure

 We both have 136809s. My 7th digit is a B and Clint's is a K.
 What does the 7th digit (letter) mean? Does that indicate
 which plant it was made in? I would assume that the last 6
 digits are the plant sequential number. For that matter, what
 do the 3, 4, 5, and 6 in the third digit mean? I looked into
 all of this on my Oldsmobiles but am still not familiar with
 all the ins outs of the VIN body tag on my El Camino yet.
 Mine originally cane w/ a 350, but I honestly don't know if
 it was a standard or custom, and what the differences are
 between the two. That info would be helpful.

 Thanks,
 John Nasta

 You really need the 6th number in the VIN. That's the one
 that indicates the model year. The first five would be
 13380, 13480, 13580 or 13680 depending on a standard or
 custom Elky and 6-Cyl or V-8.
