The fastest, safest and best way to strip a car
is acid dip. It will cost about the same as media blasting. Maybe a little
more. They don't use sand. Sandblasting is one of those universal words
everyone uses to describe what they want done. They do sandblast the frame,
I'll get mine done this spring. Acid dipping will get in every nook and cranny
and remove EVERYTHING. Rust, grease, paint, sealer, etc. But you get back
virgin looking steel. They bake it in an oven to melt and loosen everything
then dip it and then it is run through a neutralizing bath. Just had mine done
and I couldn't be happier with it. The solid floors I thought I
had.. well their not so solid. I have to replace two small sections in
front. Right where the air conditioner was. I had a Mustang media blasted once
and it turned out to be a nightmare. It will punch holes in weaker metal even
if there are no holes there now.

$2100, that was the body and 2 doors. But for that
price they also e-coated the body and doors. So every square inch of steel is
primered with e-coat. The frame will cost me $300 to sand blast.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Master cylinder replacement

2003-01-14 Thread Richard Milkiewicz
The single reservoir you have sounds original. I suggest going to a duel
reservoir and a power brake booster. If your single fails your out of luck.
With the duel you'll at least have one set of brakes. Front or back. Depends
on what circuit goes out. Try this site.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] Master cylinder replacement

 Hi,

I went to back my 64 Chevelle out on Saturday and noticed that I had no
brakes left. What little fluid was left in the master cylinder had leaked
out and it was now empty. Good thing the emergency brake still worked.

Would I be better off replacing the whole master cylinder or should I try
a re-build kit? My current master cylinder has the screw on cap while the
replacements seem to have the clip that goes over the cover. Which one is
correct for a restoration?

Napa auto parts lists 2 types of master cylinders. One is for heavy duty
brakes w/metalic linings and the other is for non-heavy duty brakes with
metalic linings. What is the difference and how can I tell what is on my
car? I have 4 wheel drum brakes.

Napa also has the power booster for the brakes (87.00) which I would also
like to add. It doesn't look like the AC/Delco ones in the Chevelle
catalogs that go for about $230.00. What is involved in adding this to the
car?

 Thanks,

 Gary

Iwould not want to use acid dip because you
have to remove trim tag. If you have a numbers correct car the replacement
rivets calls into question the originality and makes it look like you switched
tags.

I would not want to use acid dip because you have to remove trim tag. If you have a numbers correct car the replacement rivets calls into question the originality and makes it look like you switched tags.

This is not meant to sound smart ass but probably will, but what are you supposed to do about rust under the body tag, leave it there? It will eventually work its way out into a fresh painted area. I took both the VIN and the body tag off my 70 when I was restoring it. I put the VIN back on before it went out to get painted. Besides, the last 6 digits of the VIN are stamped in 2 different locations on the body as well as the frame. It just seems to me that being quite anal. I just used regular pop rivets to put the body tag back on. My car is not original anyways, and besides the point, it's my car so I'll do the best job I can to prevent the rust demons from coming back.
I can understand not taking it off if it is some kind of super car, such as a Yenko, L89, LS6, L79, etc, but for a modified car or other than an Original Restored car, I wouldn't worry about it. Just my opinion.

Rich,

That sounds like something of interest to put on my web site. I'll take
a copy if it's not too much trouble.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Automotive Decals

2003-01-14 Thread John Nasta
If search the OCN web site for the words Chevelle Decal you will get about
10 pages of results. Otherwise from the category menu, you can choose the
Engine Trunk Decals area or the Body Decals Paint Stripes area under
Chevelle.

Hi Folks

A while back one of the members asked where he could get a complete set of
decals for a Chevelle he was restoring. I recently came across a vendor at
a flea market that had a tremendous selection of decals of every description
for every year. He also had shop and owners manuals. Thought that list
might be interested in the details:

The fastest, safest and best way to strip a
car is acid dip. It will cost about the same as media blasting. Maybe a
little more. They don't use sand. Sandblasting is one of those universal
words everyone uses to describe what they want done. They do sandblast the
frame, I'll get mine done this spring. Acid dipping will get in every nook
and cranny and remove EVERYTHING. Rust, grease, paint, sealer, etc. But
you get back virgin looking steel. They bake it in an oven to melt and
loosen everything then dip it and then it is run through a neutralizing
bath. Just had mine done and I couldn't be happier with it. The
solid floors I thought I had.. well their not so solid. I have to
replace two small sections in front. Right where the air conditioner was.
I had a Mustang media blasted once and it turned out to be a nightmare. It
will punch holes in weaker metal even if there are no holes there
  now.

Typically, How much does it cost to have a
body sand blasted? I'm trying to decide if i want to rent a Rotissorie
(sp?) and do it my self, of just let somebody else do it.

[Chevelle-List] Fitting a Harley in an El Camino? ...or, what cool old vehicle would?

2003-01-14 Thread Raj R.

Hey guys, my brother is interested in getting
another truck to haul his motorcycle around in (2003 Harley Davidson Road King)
and wanted to know the measurements of an El Camino bed.. I'm slowly but surely
influencing him! Muhahah! Anyway, he wanted to know if the bed was longer than
6' (his Ford Ranger bed currently..).. I believe the footprint of the bike is
more towards 8' and I don't know if our beloved El Chevelles actually make
that.. I suggested a 69-70 (favorite year) Chevy truck fleetside longbox.. I'd
rather have an El Camino in the family but a C10 or C20 would do too..
Apparently the bike is in the 800-1000lbs range, too.. Don't know if that makes
a difference..

Anyway, if you folks with Harleys don't mind
speakin' up your info is greatly appreciated.. I did see an early 50's GMC
hauling a harley but the tailgate was down.. Hmm..
