Re: [Chevelle-List] Steering Box Rebuild
Larry, some time ago I sent several people on the list an article on rebuilding the Saginaw steering box. I still have it on my drive. Would you like a copy? It's 4 pages. Rich - Original Message - From: Larry Butler To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, March 22, 2003 10:47 PM Subject: [Chevelle-List] Steering Box Rebuild I have a '72 El Camino with power steering. I suspect the 31 year old pitman shaft seal on the steering boxis leaking. Question: I can't seem to find literature on how to rebuild the steering box. Has anyone out there rebuilt a steering box? What is involved? Is it better to have it rebuilt? I suppose there are rebuild kits, but I am worried about tools. Re: [Chevelle-List] Steering Box Rebuild
Also,If you go to Team Chevelle tech forum and search in the Steering and Suspension forum for power steering. You will find what your looking for. One of the members worked at saginaw and has written some papers on steering box rebuilds. http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi hope this helps Jason Pollock On Sunday, March 23, 2003, at 07:46 AM, RMilkiewicz wrote: Larry, some time ago I sent several people on the list an article on rebuilding the Saginaw steering box. [Chevelle-List] 68-72 doorjamb sill plate w/ Fisher logo - Original GM
Doing some cleaning and reorganizing today. Anybody want this thing? It got damaged in shipping a good while back and has been sitting here ever since. It is bent and has one split in it. I know there are guys out there with TIG welders and polishers who could fix it, so I figured I'd ask before I chuck it. Just pay the postage. It is still in the original GM wrapper, which is completely intact, so it's not scratched up at all. Just bent. Anyway, let me know. Otherwise it goes. Fits all 1968-72 two-door GM A-body cars. Re: [Chevelle-List] Horsepower TV Wheels/Tires on Chucks wagon
Does anyone know if there are some pics of Chuck's wagon with the new wheels anywhere on the net? I didn't get to see the show, but I'd love to see how they look. I've got the same sizes and nearly the same backspacings on order for my Chevelle, but they're the new American Racing Salt Flat Specials. I've got about another 4 weeks to wait since they're custom offsets, I don't know if I can wait that long! [Chevelle-List] Where's that rear axle code?
I'm trying to figure out if the 12 bolt under my '72 El Camino is the one that came with the car. I got under it with a wire brush and knocked off a lot of dirt and grease. My "Catalog of Chevelle, Malibu and El Camino ID Numbers, 1964-1978" says "It is located on the bottom of the left or right axle tube adjacent to the differential carrier housing." I brushedthe tubesdown to a rough state (down to paint but not bare metal). I did not find the code. So here are my questions: 1) Is thiscode stamped in the axle tube? Or is it painted? Or raised letters? 2) Does the number go the length of the tube or does it go vertical around the tube? 3) I found a casting number in the housing itself, front, driver's side, 3969278NF. I truly suspect that this is awrecking yardreplacement. The brake line fasteners to the housing were loose. There are two rectangular sheet metal guards (approx. 4" x 6")bolted to the axle tubes near the lower shock mounts that don't seem to be Chevelle/El Caminorelated. At least in the pictures I've seen in magazines and shop manuals, they are not there. Any help is appreciated! Larry
Re: [Chevelle-List] Where's that rear axle code?
the code is on the axle tube. It is not on the bottom, it is on what would be considered the front of the right axle tube and is about 5 inches or so from the center section. It will be written the length of the tube, not around the circumference. Hope this helps. Tom

Title: Message Agree with Tom. It should bestamped into the housing tube itself (not raised letters or cast) and they're not stamped very hard from those that I've seen and can be difficult to locate and read.
