Re: [Chevelle-List] Restoration Shops

2003-03-31 Thread MICRLASER
The problem is, no one gives a rats ass about the quality of the work they are doing anymore.  Finding a good and HONEST body shop has to be the most difficult thing, at least in my area.  Most of these places are driven by the quickie insurance jobs.
I knew nothing about restoring a car when I bought my 70.  I just took it apart, down to the last little screw and did things as I went along.  I am convinced that the only way to do it right is to do it yourself.  Each time I have farmed out an aspect of my 70, something has gone wrong.  The paint and body work was a total fiasco.  I took it to have a headliner put in and the bozo put 2 dents in my door that cost me $900 to have it fixed.  That ordeal ended up in court and there is now a lein on that guys house.  I plan on painting y 69 Charger myself when the time comes...

[Chevelle-List] Restoration Shops

2003-03-31 Thread Crazy Rusty

Does anyone know of any good restoration shops in Washington State?

I recently had my vehicle worked on at Buffalo Restorations
(www.autorestorations.com) in Puyallup, WA. I had been
rear-ended on a freeway and heard that they had a pretty good reputation for
restorations.  I took my vehicle there, I showed them all of the damaged
areas (front end, left quarter panel, seat, and front left fender) had them
check it out and give me a rough estimate and then went back to the insurance
company for the check.  After some haggling with the insurance, I got the
money and got them rolling on it.  The original estimate was for about
3500 or so.  After awhile they needed a supplement of about $1100 and then
another supplement of $2200 or so.  The total from the insurance company
came to about 7000 when everything was said in done.  After days of them
telling me the car would be done the next day (that went on for over a week), I
was finally able to go pick up the car.  I did a quick check on some
things before I left; found one or two items and mentioned them to the shop
manager.  A few days later I noticed a few more things, and a week after
that I noticed a few more… and then last week I noticed a hell of a lot
more.  Pretty soon I found that after I got my car back, it had more
problems then before I took it in.  I took it in, basically, to get the
frame pulled and the damage caused by the accident repaired.  Got it back
with the rear bumper bent and missing parts, the dash lights not working,
reverse lamps cut out, front bumper bent downwards and smashed in, primer
sprayed on my rear window, windshield jug melted, the left rear marker bezel broken,
the molding on the left rear fender gone, the seat frame broken, the rear
defroster not working, package tray warped, more mold then 2yr old cheese, some
type of dust (sanding dust?) EVERYWHERE, and, to top it all off, when they
repainted the car they didn’t ask me what color it was, they assumed it
was a certain color and then painted it.  Now, I am young and I am inexperienced
in having others work on my car.  I also don’t know a hell of a lot
about the car in the first place.  So in addition to my first question, is
there anything I should have done differently?  Did I ASK to have the shop
screw me?  In my business (IT) you are supposed
to not only know how to do your job, but know how to do it down to the very
last detail… are restoration shops on some other system?

I took it up there about 3 weeks later and showed the shop
manager half of the stuff that was wrong.  He said he would get a parts
list for me, I haven’t heard anything else.  I was afraid they were
going to ask me to leave it there again so I told him I just wanted the parts
and didn’t want them working on it.  I suppose that wasn’t the
brightest thing to say.  What do you guys recommend I do?

Clint,
You might want to try Beavis Race cars in Tyler, TX. I've seen some of
their work, and it's all top-notch. He used to rent space from Gary Harwood
when Harwood was building street rods/bodies... his was in the same bldg.
Sorry, but no phone # right now. I'll see if I can dig one up later.

RE: [Chevelle-List] 4.11 speedo

2003-03-31 Thread Dale McIntosh
Title: Message

You
have to change the transmission speedo gears to match.  Assuming tire size
remains the same and you know what old rear ratio you're replacing with what new
ratio, it's a simple swap of a couple of speedo gears.  A couple of sites
to help you calculate which gear you need are:

http://members.core.com/~faldrich/speedo.htm
http://64.226.206.184/tech_info/speedo_gears.htm
http://www.chevelles.com/shop/speedo.html

All
the above work well if you like math and are changing wheel/tire sizes from
stock as well or using a non-factory offered trans in 67 like the TH350, 200-4R
or700-R4.  If you're using stock (or comparable) sized wheel/tires, http://www.team67.com/groups/group.004/miscellaneous_parts.htm will
show the GM part numbers for a 67 w/4-speed and 4.10 gears (Chevrolet didn't
offer a 4.11 ratio after 64 but did have a 4.10).  The gear you need for a
4-speed w/4.10 gears is group 4.337, part number 3860348; 25 tooth and orange in
color.

That is cause for a sever ass kicking.  Had that been my car, I would have beaten him to a bloody pulp friend or not.  This is why I sent my 70 out to get painted as a shell, no motor, trans, glass, interior, etc.  If and when I have my 70 repainted, the motor/tranny is coming out along with the interior.

I actually got a front fender from a vendor who was a few miles from Pomona.

they happy, did they get what they expected and most importantly, would they send their mother there for a paint job.

SPEAKING of this, i worked at this car dealer (forest lake chrysler) where i did all the billing, the parts managers (Brian Rictmeier) mother had her car in for repair, when it was done the tech gave me the paper work to bill out, i could see the costs of the pars and the sale amount, the prices were at retail, so i went to the parts manager and asked if he wanted to give his mom the "employee discount" his reply was-" I will give her some off but not that much" sure enough when i got the paperwork back some prices were still at retail and some were very slightly changed-(anyone elses family members received a "employee discount" both on parts and labor) he would not even let me change the labor prices in this case asking the above question, might burn you!  :)

[Chevelle-List] wrecked my truck this morning

2003-03-31 Thread Dan McIntosh

Can anyone give me some helpful
advice.
Its a 99 Ranger XLT 4X4, wrecked hard into the wall
on the highway twice...(it was like pinball), anyway, its fully paid for but I
only carry liability insurance.
I think its totaled...
so my question is... is it junk yard fodder, or is
there a salvage pool in Cleveland I can contact where I may get a little bit
more for it.
If anyone wants pictures to assess the damages for
themselves, I'll send some to you.
Thanks guys...

Re: [Chevelle-List] rip-off body shops

2003-03-31 Thread Spatch

Isn't Jeff Lilly the one that costs about $60,000
minimum (What he told me when I called him) for a body off?  I'm looking
more for the guy who will do a good job but not charge an arm a leg and a
hand.  I don't even need a body-off, just want a reputable shop that will
be honest with the charges and give me a good paintjob while fixing the body
problems.

Actually I would like to know that as well.  I am in
San Antonio and, like the rest of you, do not want to get
ripped off.  Appreciate any insight.
