Don't
forget to wear a respirator. POR-15 contains cyanide and can kill you. It also
sticks really well inside your lungs and never leaves.

David..  A Gallon.. that goes a LG way

and as far as I know there thinner is specific to there product..

The Thinner comes in Quart Size..  So IMO to do your frame
and other related parts.. two  quarts of Por-15 and  one thinner
should be enough..

Wayne...

PS as stated by others,,  you can brushing it on ,, it flows
out nice and smooth.

just another

RE: [Chevelle-List] Frame

2003-06-04 Thread Cecil \"Steve\" Martin

I used
a brush on mine. Came out even and shiny, no brush strokes. No over
spray mess but a few drops on the floor. I wore gloves  Stuff gets on
your skin and it has to wear off in a matter of days unless you get it off while
it's still wet. Hand cleaner or thinner while wet is the only
way.

It's just hard to get into some of the enclosed areas of the frame.
I sprayed anti-rust spray can stuff the best I could in the access
holes.

One
more thing, that stuff is s thick at the bottom I don't know how someone can
get it all mixed up without opening the can and stirring it. Cover it with saran
wrap afterwards before putting the lid on ...you won't get them separated if you
don't ..after you get as much of the stuff out of the lid valley as you
can.

Have a
small cup or several small paper cups to pour it in and several small brushes.
Smaller is better in this case.

I put
the POR-15 overcoat paint over the POR-15 anti-rust product. I wish that paint
was as shiny as the anti-rust product! Man that stuff looked good. Too bad it
won't hold up in UV light.

POR 15 has it's own thinner ..
remember it BAD stuff  make sure you use a GOOD paint respirator and cover

Now that I think about it Don, I think that's what he
meant too. He said the A-Arm, but then in the
conversation mentioned where the arm bolts in place,
which sounds more like what you are describing- You
wouldn't happen to remember what they ran, would you?

Thanks,

Those plug wire guides are nice!

didn't Moroso used to make a cap that had the wires come out in the correct

[Chevelle-List] ** Is this rear end worth while? **

2003-06-04 Thread Kyle Bennett

For those of you that have knowledge in narrowing Chevelles, i have an important question that needs an answer within 3-4 days.

I have located a narrowed rear end for my pro street project that measures 34 inches (flange to flange).

Do you think this rear end width is about right for a 71 Chevelle? I know backspacing can be altered to acquire a better fit, but does the width seem to be in the correct range for my 71 project with 15x14 rims on 31x18.5 mickeys.

Please give me your comments or suggestions concerning this rearend. If i get it, i need to make it happen within 3-4 days.

Or if you know of a company that may be able to answer this question it too would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks a million,
Kyle Bennett

How far apart should they be? Would the spacing of a typical wire loom be
enough, or should there be at least a wire in between?

Always keep the #5 and #7 wires routed away from each other. The
cylinders are next to each other and they are so close to each other in
the firing order that an inductive pulse from the #5 wire can cause a
spark in the #7 cylinder, firing both 5 and 7 at the same time. Waay
early for the #7 cylinder.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Rich Edelbrock Carb

2003-06-04 Thread Tom Tomlinson
Wayne:
The fuel pump is stock, and I checked it last year when I had a fuel
starvation problem, so I think it's ok. I know at least one of the advance
mechanisms is working (mechanical or vacuum) since I can see the spark
advance on the timing light when I rev it, but I think I'll test them
independently to be sure. There is no "pop" at idle; only during
acceleration and deceleration.

Bill Vander Werf suggests checking to make sure #5 and #7 wires are not
close to each other since they can easily cross-fire. This was also
suggested by a buddy of mine, so I'll definitely look into that.

One thing I noticed about the 1405 vs the 1406. The 1405 is set up much
richer than the 1406, even though they are basically the same carb.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Tom.. The 1405 carb.. is close for a mild 350 out of the Box...With the O2
sensor ( COOL )
I assume you have a mechanical full pump... if that is the case and it's a
Hi out put. you can
over power the needles in the AFB/Edelbrock type carbs. They only like 6 t
o7 psi ..

. At a idle is the a " POP" in the header ??

Another problem I have run into in NEW installations.. is dirt- sediment
getting in to the metering fuel deliver circuit ...

Cross fire on New Wires !!! can, but most likely NOT...

I would double check my firing order..timing and Points,, the obvious
spring and mech advance on the Distributor .. then start on the full
delivery sys.. then the carb,,
The Carb came with a tuning chart,, also there web page has good info...

Hey George,
Just checked out A AAAdvantage also known as carmoves.com on the Better Business Bureau website

BBB gives them an unsatisfactory rating.  I’ve also heard several complaints about them on other online lists...corvette action center, montecarloss, etc.

I’d stay away from them.

I brought my ‘64 convertible out from the Chicago area, to Los Angeles last November, using a husband and wife team.  Their rates were competitive, they stay in constant contact with you via cell phone, and made the transport experience very pleasurable.

Let me know if you want their contact info.

Here are a couple links to use to get multiple transport quotes.
http://www.dispatchsearch.com/
http://www.autoshippingquote.com/

Can’t validate any of the companies that will send you quotes, but at least you’ll get some dollar figures and names that you can then go out and research their quality.

Luck,
Kurt

something was fishy and told me not to worry within 5 days I had a check cut

[Chevelle-List] Frame and sheetmetal?

2003-06-04 Thread JDHall
Okso
I'm finally ready to start replacement on my 69 floor and trunk pans. Has
anyone used the full pans that almost cover the tunnel? I'm looking for top
quality in the metal and there seems to be allot to chose from. Any
suggestions? My tunnel was butchered during its time away so I do have a
need for it.
As far as the frame question. I always assumed an Elcamino frame would
only swap with a wagon frame. Is this the case? Can an Elky frame be
modified to fit a Chevelle?

Kind Regards,
JDHall

RE: [Chevelle-List] harmonic balancer

2003-06-04 Thread John W. Lonadier, Jr.
Title: Message

Charles, try using about a 12 inch long stout screw driver or small pry
bar. The bolts that get threaded to the balancer should give you a little room
between the plate and the balancer after the bolts bottom out. Once you have
taken up all the slack with the center bolt place the screw driver or pry bar
between the plate of the puller and the balancer under one of the bolts that
attach the puller to the balancer and on top of the next one to the left facing
it as if you were trying to take it off, like trying to turn it the other
direction with the screw driver or pry bar. That is what I had to do to get mine
off when I did my cam swap. Hope that may clear it up a little. Sending this
today as I just got home from driving a couple of legs of the Power Tour
2003.

[Chevelle-List] harmonic balancerI'm using the exact same
tool, Brad. Its just that the balancer isn't stationary. Its keep turning as
it would if the engine was started (just it turns along with the threaded rod
and plate on the remover). I'm going to try to jam something between the
balancer and the engine front maybe, but it seems to be in a bad position for
that. Someone also told me to jam the flywheel in the back of the engine or
drop the starter to get to the flywheel and that that would solve the turning
crank problem. Seems like I'm doing too
  much.  Thanx for

RE: [Chevelle-List] Rich Edelbrock Carb

2003-06-04 Thread Bill Vander Werf
Always keep the #5 and #7 wires routed away from each other. The
cylinders are next to each other and they are so close to each other in
the firing order that an inductive pulse from the #5 wire can cause a
spark in the #7 cylinder, firing both 5 and 7 at the same time. Waay
early for the #7 cylinder.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Frame

2003-06-04 Thread Dan McIntosh

I've used por-15 on a multitude of things, and I
love the stuff...
it goes a long way, just be sure not to pour out
too much at one time, as it thickens fairly fast...
also, do not dip the brush directly into the
container... it will contaminate the rest of the por-15 and render it
useless...
you will be amazed how far a quart will go if used
properly...

just remember... it is not UV protective, so if you
use it where sunlight will find its way, make sure to topcoat it with some
Chassis black...

what condition is your frame in
currently?/

how did you end up going to "Ron"? Does he have a large shop? maybe a few shows with a sign that says "hey you want your car to look like this see Ron in Pa" would do the trick? Ron isn't your brother-in-law is he ? 3 years ago my brother in laws last email to me was "see you in court," i had my attorney on jump him and shut him up real quick.

RE: [Chevelle-List] lifting motors by hand, was: harmonic balancer

2003-06-04 Thread Dave Studly
I can relate to that a little bit. I built my 406 short-block in my
basement over the winter a couple years ago and getting it out to the garage
took some ass-busting. I believe I still have both testicles, though!
There were three of us to get it outside.

Actually without the heads and everything else I removed, it was pretty
light, considering. All there was to lift was the smallblock, crank,
pistons, and the minor internals. I'm poor here, gimme a break, and the
weather was foul here in Alaska, in the middle of December, so I was forced
to do it in my garage. I don't have any cross beams or anything to hoist
from. Anyway, I had her pryed from the tranny, and sitting up as high as I
could on a floor jack, before we attempted. As far as having room, there's
a ton! When you remove the headers, radiator, and all hoses, you can really
get in there. I wish I had taken pictures. True, I'll never have anymore
children, and I ruined my uniform that day, as I rounded up a few guys right
after work to do it, but we did it just the same. Be advised, I do not
endorse doing this, as it will cost you a testicle, but it does make a
knucklebustin' story. If anyone is interested, I broke down and rented a
cherrypicker to put the 383 back in! It was completely assembled at the
time, and even I know when I'm outmatched! HUAH!

Don't know how Sarg and the boys did it... But in my poor youth,, I would
bolt a chain to head bolts on each side and use a pipe run through the
loops..
one guy on each side sitting on the fenders .. Would lift the pipe t and set
the oil pan on a 2X10 the lay on the rad support and extended to the
ground,
acted like a sliding board.. Then all we dis was slid it to the ground. .
Yes it made a mess. I would drain the oil and remove the side block drain
plug if
I could...to minamize the clean up..
