[Chevelle-list] electric fan mounting

2003-08-27 Thread Dan McIntosh

Howdy, I recently installed an aluminum radiator in
my Impy, and am not wanting to go with an electric fan. Any good ideas on how to
mount the fan without sticking them plastic ties through the radiator core? I'd
like to see and hear what you all have done in the past. Thank you.

Hi, If you get stung on E-bay, make sure to report it to their fraud
department as well as your local police department. It might work, and it
might not. It really depends on the evidence and the willingness/experience
of the detective assigned to your case. We are in the process of filing 40+
felony charges after successfully serving a search warrant at an
18-year-old's house. He had a bad habit of selling items and then
forgetting to send them. You have to have patience because these kinds of
cases take a LONG time to compile for the state attorney. This one has
taken several months and is about 3 thick (in a 3-ring binder). What goes
around eventually does come around...sometimes. I think he is about to have
a really bad day. Good for him and good luck to us every time we bid.

I've never purchased anything from the TC sale site itself although I do
have a 4-spd conversion on there now for sale for a 67 Chevelle - but I
also have it on eBay simply because there's more traffic and I can at
least gauge if it's even being viewed. I've bought and sold pounds (not
quite tons yet G) of stuff on eBay over the past 4 or 5 years and only
had one sour experience but we worked that out. I have purchased a few
things from other TX members, but only people I knew from the site.

Ebay at least has some semblance of protection where TC unfortunately
has none except word-of-mouth. Too many dealer stuff I see from folks
that may or may not support TC in any fashion. Not knocking TC, in fact
I applaud the efforts, butunless you know who/what you're dealing with,
 it can be a challenge.

Yeah, I remember when I remarked I thought this place was here to

its a good place to get information on our beloved cars, and meet fellow

Chevelle. I posted a question tonight that I haven't heard back on, but
maybe the 350 turbo change out is kicking a dead horse in here. I'm sure
it isn't a new subject. I've still got lots of questions to ask... like,
Do I have to get new upper A arms to use the 17 inch rims? Stuff like
that. There does seem to be allot of smart people in here. Someone once
told me that www.teamchevelle.com is set up for the serious questions.
They do have allot of info there. Well Joe, glad it wasn't something I

[Chevelle-list] Rear end

2003-08-27 Thread Stephen Lentz
First I would like to thank everyone who helped me change the pinion seal on
my 12-bolt. I followed the directions and everything worked out as planned.
There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this list and I am glad they are
just as helpful and willing to assist restoration-rookies like me.
I have one small snag. I used the gray colored Permatex ultra-gasket sealer
when I put the rear cover on. It seemed a little runny when I applied it so
I let it set up a bit before I mated the cover with the rear. It dripped
out a bit when I was tightening the bolts (I torque every other one evenly).
Well, I ate dinner and then went out to fill the rear. Everything seemed
fine, so I went out for a short cruiseya got to test it! I then cleaned
my floor, parked the car back in the garage and went to bed. I found a 4
puddle of fluid under the rear (toward the back this time) in the morning.
It was rather depressing, but I figure I just used the wrong type of sealer.
The gray stuff doesn't seem to like the differential lube at all. The
question is, what would be the best sealer? RTV blue? Black? Something
else?
Also, what type of lube do you recommend? Synthetic is more expensive than
the regular stuff. Is it better? My rear is equipped with Posi-traction in
case that matters.

Thanks,
Steve

2003-08-27 Thread Dale McIntosh
Good to hear the rear end pros here could help. There really is a great
collection of knowledge and experiences here. You'll often find two or
more folks that do things differently and yet have the same overall
results - like gasket sealer vs. no gasket sealer. Case in point:

Unless the rear cover is warped you shouldn't need any sealer. If you
really want to use some, put it on the cover and seal the gasket to the
cover. I very seldom use any sealer on most things. Generally when I
do use it it's to keep the gasket in place until the parts can be
cinched together or it's put on the rough side of whatever is being
bolted together - like the rear cover instead of the housing since its
surface would be more apt to not be flat. It's also easier to remove
the cover and get all the gasket material and residue off it than the
housing.

Can anyone tell me
what this serial # tells me? It's from the rear of my frame. 6K100914.
Shouldn't it match the VIN?
Thanks

 Rich,
Yes it should match the VIN, all VIN numbers should be
 the same on the car.

Like in everything.. there are more then one way to Skin a Cat...
Most guys . the train of thought to rear housing gasket,, have that be a

one's that come in the intake gasket set.
And use a bead of RED RTV around the parameter and each hole...
Now this practice my varyin area ..

It's also easier to remove
the cover and get all the gasket material and residue off it than the
 housing.

  Subject: [Chevelle-list] Rear end

First I would like to thank everyone who helped me change the
pinion seal on my 12-bolt. I followed the directions and
everything worked out as planned. There are a lot of
knowledgeable people on this list and I am glad they are just
as helpful and willing to assist restoration-rookies like me.
I have one small snag. I used the gray colored Permatex
ultra-gasket sealer when I put the rear cover on. It seemed
a little runny when I applied it so I let it set up a bit
before I mated the cover with the rear. It dripped out a bit
when I was tightening the bolts (I torque every other one
evenly). Well, I ate dinner and then went out to fill the
rear. Everything seemed fine, so I went out for a short
cruiseya got to test it! I then cleaned my floor, parked
the car back in the garage and went to bed. I found a 4
puddle of fluid under the rear (toward the back this time) in
the morning. It was rather depressing, but I figure I just
used the wrong type of sealer. The gray stuff doesn't seem to
like the differential lube at all. The question is, what
would be the best sealer? RTV blue? Black? Something else?
Also, what type of lube do you recommend? Synthetic is more
expensive than the regular stuff. Is it better? My rear is
equipped with Posi-traction in case that matters.

  Thanks,
  Steve

[Chevelle-list] 66 front running lights operation

the front running lights operation. With the headlight switch pulled half

headlight switch all the way out and headlights go on, rear tail lights
stay on and front running lights go off - is this normal for the front
running lights to go off when the headlights come on? Note: Turn signals
work all around in any head light position.

Take the top pad off, there are some screws under the front edge and clips
toward the windshield. After the pad is removed, you can reach in from the
top and change the bulbs. If all of them are out, check the fuse first.

Yes. Back in '66, they were not considered running lights but,
Parking lights.
And a Police officer made it very clear to me back in the early
eighties that these parking lights were not to be used except on a parked
car!

Re-wiring the front lights to be as runners will not be easy as:
1. the original circuit used the lights lower wattage filament for
parking and, IMO, are not bright enough for daytime
2. you will want the bright filament for daytime running lights,
but,
3. the blinker uses the brighter filament and will need a new
circuit to work properly, but,
4. the blinker circuit needs the resistance of the brighter filament
to blink at the proper speed
5. the old housing may not be suitable to hold a hot burning light
all day without discoloring, melting, etc.

A couple vent holes in the front blinker housing and a couple 12V
relays should do the job.
