Re: [Chevelle-list] I need an opinion
Read the October 2003 issue of Car Craft pgs.#38-39 They have some very favorable things to say about Vortec heads. Do your home work about what flex plate and torque converter to use with that one pc. seal crank. I had a roler 305 with vortec heads in a 97 GMC and it just flew! BTW- my local GM parts manager would never BS me about "missaplication" if my crate motor blew up. Because they all look like the same application when sitting on the parts room floor. Thay have sold me crate motors for other "missaplications" and just really want my continued business. Just my 2 cents worth. Eric... I have a 67 Elky. I plan on putting a new 350 engine into it soon. It will be used for a daily driver so I don't need too much h.p. I was planning on a GM crate engine, but found out since it didn't come with a 350, that it makes it a "misapplication" and the warranty would only be for 12 months or 12k miles instead of the advertised 3yr. 36k mile warranty. That's still a great warranty, but I found a rebuilt VORTEC ROLLER motor from a very reputable dealer that comes with a 3yr 36k warranty. My question is this, are the Vortec heads a better way to go? I plan on using an Edelbrock 650 cfm carb , HEI ignition and stock exhaust manifolds. If I'm not planning high revving are the roller rockers necessary or better? [Chevelle-list] Crappy distributor.
This sucked. I put a new Summit HEI distributor on my Chevelle when I rebuilt it, about 3000 or 4000 miles ago. This summer it did not have decent power, it was only able to spin the wheels about a car length (with a 468 BBC). I was going to change it to the lightest mech advance springs to see if that helped, and found that the bushings on the advance weights were shot, dust all over in the cap, and even the hole in the weight for the pin was being worn oblong. $7 and 2h later, boy that helped! Runs very smooth again and has lots more power again, able to spin the wheels through first and most of second gear. The moral of this story? It's always something. Mark 71ss.

Re: [Chevelle-list] I need an opinion
As long as you are keeping it carbureated, go for the Vortec engine. Roller motors are much more efficeint in making power than a non-roller motor. As far as rocker arms go, I put a set of roller tip stamped steel ones from Comp Cams on the 350 in my beater car, but you can use plain old stamped steel ones if you want. It's a very nice setuop and I think you will be pleased with it for it's intended use. Tom

Re: [Chevelle-list] Dog dish caps
Rich, Did you try to call him at the number listed in the auction? I would do that first, and if you can't reach him leave the negative feedback message. You should give him a chance, many people don't check email very often. But people do read the feedback and you will help the next person and may even cost the guy some bid $$ on subsequent auctions. [Chevelle-list] Looking for '68 BB P.S. Hose
I'm looking for an original GM power steering hose for a '68 BB Chevelle application. This would be for the high pressure side (hose with tubing and fittings on both ends). Would prefer a good used one to use as a "template" to have a new one made. Would be willing to return the used hose, if you prefer to keep it. Will pay all shipping costs involved. Have tried the aftermarket reproduction hose already - not close enough to original GM. :( Original part number according to the assembly manual #3928204 (just in case you may have an NOS example just laying around). j/k :) Anyone out there willing to trust me with there hose ? LOL !!! Thank you for your time, Kent '68 Malibu ZZ502/502 ACES #5102
Re: [Chevelle-list] off to the body shop
That totally makes sense. When I removed the rear window, it had two small rubber blocks on the bottom edge. I will probably have an auto glass installer handle that to make sure it is done correctly. Thanks to all for your comments. Everything went smoothly last night. All the body mount bolts came out without trouble except for one, which they torched off. The body is off to the chemical dipper today and will stay in the acid tank for 3 or 4 weeks. I didn't realize it would be that long, but it should come out nice and clean. He probably will beat me on the paint work before I get the chassis done unless I get cranking on it. Now begins the fun part! One interesting thing that happened while I was there, the owner of the shop got a call from the editor of Super Chevy magazine. Terry something or other. They want him to do a project for them. Sounded like an early sixties Plymouth or something. When he got off the phone, he said that he has done work for the magazine in the past and has made a lot of connections with parts suppliers through them. He offered to pass along to me all the discounts he gets without marking anything up for all the stuff I'm going to need. I thought that was pretty cool of him. -Matt At 05:01 AM 11/19/2003 -0500, you wrote: Glass-sealer..Even with the rope type seal the glass will move on you after install. The shop owner also said that he's going to send me digital pictures periodically of the car's progress. To update me on wants being done and for a nice photo album when the car is finished. -Matt At 03:07 PM 11/18/2003 -0800, you wrote: You should visit (but not bug) him often, to keep advised of developing problems and watch work progress to your standard and agreed upon time frame. If he knows what he is doing, and you've given him a completely disassembeled vehicle, he's probably going to beat your chassis restoration by the time he does the body and paint work. Unles the body is already unbolted, the only "not smooth" part might be when the bolts holding the body to the frame break. I had to repair 3 or 4 on one of my cars, but it was a nice time to have to cut the floor open for the repair. We made sure all those hidden nuts worked really well before the body went back on... i've had "dealings" with some people on ebay that once they recieved payment that was it, end of transaction. on the other hand, i've had others send me the item even before i'd sent payment. ( i sent them a warning email about eventually getting burnt ) i've gotten items that were better than i'd have ever imagined for the price, and also gotten items that were one step above scrap. even after corresponding often and asking plenty of the right questions i've gotten high priced sCRAP. over all i like doing buisness on ebay, but like anywhere, there are scam artists just my 2 cents Bill B.67 MalibuEdmond Oklahomahttp://groups.msn.com/SpidrManspics/mycar.msnwhttp://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/chevellerestoration/ - Original Message - From: RMilkiewicz To: The Chevelle Mailing List Sent: Wednesday, November 19, 2003 6:45 AM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Dog dish caps I wrote him before I placed a bid and asked him specific questions as to the condition of the hub caps. Re: [Chevelle-list] Dog dish caps
I wrote him before I placed a bid and asked him specific questions as to the condition of the hub caps. That's why I bid on them.I also wrote the seller twice after I had received the caps and he won't answer. Such as the frequent use of the acronym NOS when describing the condition of the part(s). Have seen the term used to describe absolute junk ! Having said that, you as the buyer must ask questions prior to bidding. Always assume the condition of the part is less than the picture shows, or worse than the seller is describing. Sorry that you were soured by your very first transaction. Myself, I have been both a seller and a buyer on ebay since about 1996, and have not had a souring experience...yet. Try contacting the seller and ebay. Let the seller know that you are dissatisfied, items not as described, and that you will be contacting ebay to resolve this. Maybe he will get the hint. Rich, Sorry to hear. I have the same situation on a radio/CD player. 100% + feedback and the radio arrived not working. He had it insured and won't follow through. This is my 2nd. bad experience on E-Bay. All you can do is carefully word your negative feedback. Re: [Chevelle-list] RE: Covering seat and foam
I was going through my articles that I have saved over the years and I found one on recovering front and rear seats. The front is a Cuda and the rear is a GTO. It's pretty detailed. And it's 9 pages. Anyone want a copy? Send me your off line email. Is it my imagination or what? It seems to me they had a lot more "how to" articles back in the '80's. This one is from 1987 and 1988. I know they still have them but they don't seem to be as detailed or their for newer cars. Re: [Chevelle-list] off to the body shop
Glass-sealer..Even with the rope type seal the glass will move on you after install. An auto glass installer told me to use little rubber blocks in the glass track to locate the glass. When I put my glass in I made my own little rubber blocks and the glass sits nice and has been in over 5 yrs with no problem. It took some time trial and error to get it but now the trim fits right. If you don;t spend the time on glass install you get poor fitting window trim that won;t look right - Original Message - From: "Steve" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "The Chevelle Mailing List" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2003 10:42 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] off to the body shop > Matt > > Some thoughts from my 1968 SS restoration, after dealing with 2 bodyshops. > First one I had to sue in court and the second turned out to be the best in > the area. > > I never thought about the windshield and back window.
