2004-02-19 Thread Cecil \"Steve\" Martin
Yeah, I know the water pump runs backwards in a completely stock 454
serpentine setup ..that's where I HOPE to be able to modify mine to run
forwards. I think I have it figured out, but need to make sure of some
things.

I had heard that when you run the water pump backwards that you lose some
efficiency. That's one reason I'd like to go with a normal rotation pump.
Another is that I already have a normal rotation chrome pump I'd like to use
:)

I finally found a water pump serpentine pulley that will work because it's
grooved and made for an aftermarket system. Here's a pic of what I am
working on, and the string is to simulate the serpentine belt just for a
visual and for testing.

Hi Bill,my two cents,,you've got the cover off,,do it the safe way,,start
the car,,back off adjustment until it starts to clatter,, then tighten the
nut until the clatter just stops,,then you have the option to tighten it
from1/4-1/2-3/4-to 1 full revolution,,but I would,, and have adj. mine at
1/2 turn,,mine being a 70 Chevelle big block,,the theory is for more low end
power,,adj. at 1/2-3/4 turn,,for more upper power,,go for zero lash[adj.
till clatter JUST stops] to1/4 turn,, don't just crank her down!

This

we would ride our bikes over the rubber hoses to make the bell ring - gaswas .68 a gallon then.
I'm 44 and I remember when I was a kid gas was .28 a gallon.  Must have been around 1967 or 1968?, since I got .50 a week in allowance for my chores, and I could almost buy two gallons of the 'red' gas for my minibike.  A bunch of us would ride all over on the old fire roads in the woods behind our house.  Dad usually gassed up on Sunday, and you better have been ready with the gas can when he left or you weren't riding that week.  He had a white 64 Impala with a blue interior with that damned speaker cover? with the Impala on it in the middle of the back seat.  It was mighty uncomfortable as I recall.  When you are the youngest you always get stuck in the middle.  Well, by Wednesday the gas was long gone...  B-(

With a
BB, it may actually be better to remove the head.  I just had both of mine
off, and pulling the header would have been a breeze.  Taking the heads
off, and reinstalling them isn't that big of a deal, it just costs a few extra
$$'s.  Gaskets alone were about $125 for me.  I know they were alot
cheaper down in Georgia, but Anchorage is a bit higher cost bracket.
Also, I bought the only ones in the state.  I sure hope I don't have
to replace them again for a while!

Tried removing the old filter and still no
luck.  It appears that it may come out from the bottom the best.
The clutch linkage is the only thing I can see holding it back.  I am
def. not a pro with anything to do with clutches so is there anything I
should look out for taking the linkage apart.  You are right, I do NOT
want to have to take the head off.  They are some kind of aftermarket
cheap crap header, two of the four pipes were smashed about half closed so I
have some Hooker's in the box waiting to go on it.

I have a 69 4spd big block and I am having a
rough time getting the driver's side header off.  The passenger side
came out from the bottom, but the driver's side hits the clutch, steering,
etc. so, unbolted motor and moved steering column out of way and it still
will not come out the top.  Any secrets I am missing?

Maybe
you should cut them up to get them off, if they are old crap?  Perhaps your
new headers are a different shape and might slide in?  Just an idea.
Don't kill yourself trying to get aftermarket cheap crap headers
off!

I'm pretty sure we covered this one
a while back.  You could do a search through the archives for it, if you
don't get an answer soon.  I couldn't tell you about a BB, I have a
SB383.  Mine are even a PITA, but if I take the engine mount bolts out, and
lift the motor just a bit, I can barely squeak them outta there.  I'm
fairly certain, that if you take the head off, it will come outta there, but you
probably don't want to go through all that!

Thanks to all who responded! It was great to see so much information get
dug up on the question. The spin off topics were good to. I'm 39, so I
can't say I recall the "Put a Tiger in Your Tank" ads. I do remember the
"S&H" stamps - we called them "Green H stamps" and full service stations as
we would ride our bikes over the rubber hoses to make the bell ring - gas
was .68 a gallon then. Where are those "care free" days?

I put in "Tiger Tail" on Ebay - found one for sale at $10.00 - no bids
yet.

Thanks again,

the giveaway of Anchor Hocking glassware with 10 gallons of gas when a
good attendant could start your gas, wash both sides of the windshield

$1's worth. :*)

Dale
Cleaning the windshield provided one of the few fringe benefits of
working as a pump jockey in the late 60's & early 70's.  This
was the time of mini skirts and halter tops, and occasionally you would
get a glimpse of heaven whilst rubbing the windscreen.  I worked at
a Phillips 66 station where we had to 1. Gas the car.
2. Clean the windshield & the rear window, and if the customer asked,
clean the side windows 3.  Open the hood & check the oil &
battery water levels and 4. Vacuum the floorboards--there were vacuum
cleaners mounted on posts at the pump islands to do this.  A lot of
stuff to do, and we had to do it all if even if the customer only bought
$1 of gas.

Yep, Back in 66 I had a 66 GTO 360hp with redline Tigerpaws. New then low
profile
tires to be a bit more "sticky". Tigerpaws were IT in those days and red
lines were the
thing for MUSCLE. Obviously Tigerpaws were advertised with the big Tiger
with outstretched
paws that were huge compared to the Tiger behind them.
And as mentioned before with great detail the Tiger in your tank came from
ESSO.

Now my question regarding tires. These days it is easy to find a Goodyear
dealer but I am
not sure about a Goodrich seller. Did the Goodrich tires come out on
Chevelles from the factory?
1970? What are the opinions about performance in use on the street,
durability and longevity

Bill, I guess I forgot the original post. The GTO was Pontiacs tiger. As far
as the tail I believe you are right to that being Esso's trademark.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Blackwalls/RWL/Redlines?

2004-02-19 Thread PLGChevelle65
Only one person mentioned redlines. I kinda like them and have been leaning towards
buying a set and mounting them on wheel vintique chrome rallyes or weld or crager
draglight type
on a dark green(tahitian turquoise) 65 SS. I prefer chrome over highly polished. I
think they're easier to care for & keep lookin good.
Coker makes radial redlines. The widest are 235/75/15 at about 29 inches high. I
have a later model 12 bolt so its kinda tight back there with current RWL Goodyear
ST's 235/60/15
which are about 8 years old but still have some life for summer cruisin'. Redlines
were quite popular back in the mid 60's on Chevelles & GTO's mostly. All & any
comments, constructive critisism or other, or just some good old thinking out loud
will all be appreciated.

Y'all ain't old unless you remember the ads for "Pink" air
atFina stations...

...or the giveaway of Anchor Hocking glassware with 10 gallons of
gas when a good attendant could start your gas, wash both sides of the
windshield and still get to the nozzle to shut it off at a $1's worth. :*)

Bill,
You are exactly right about Esso, and showing both of our ages, and
