RE: [Chevelle-list] Converting to bucket seats in a 71?

2004-07-26 Thread Larry Butler

Mark,

I put
the conversion brackets in my 72 Elky. The kit came with two brackets,
one for the driver's side and one for the passenger's side. The raised part
of the bracket points to the firewall and is welded down to the floor next to
the tunnel (you will want to get very good penetration when you weld for
safety's sake). For the outer side of the seat, the buckets bolt to the existing
holes next to the door sill. You will notice that the front bolt hole (towards
the firewall near the sill) is raised similar in height to the raised part of
the bracket. The back hole near the door sill fits the outer hole in the seat
bracket (my bracket has two holes and the outer hole lined up perfectly
with the rear bolt hole).

My
seats sit level when on the ground. That is, left and right brackets are
identical in height as well as from front to back on each bracket. Because of
the about 1" raise in front on both the floor and bracket,
the seat is tilted back somewhat. Its a perfect angle for me. My
seats came out of a 71 El Camino and when I get to the interior stage I
will recover them with 72 covers.

Hope
this helps.

Larry

I ordered two pairs of bench to bucket conversion
brackets for my 1971.  I have a question
about this mod I hope someone can help with.
I took the old junker seats down from storage today and set
them on the garage floor. Three legs one
each seat are the same length, the forth about 1" shorter. Both seats are like this.
  The conversion
bracket picture on Johns web site
looks like one end of the brackets is higher than the other, same for both brackets in the set.
Either my seats are not from a Chevelle (possible I was sold the wrong thing) or the
kit would need one flat bracket per seat and one with an elevated end per
  seat.
Can anyone shed some light on
  this?

I did this at one time also on a 67 Camaro (before I realized they were
supposed to be that way,ysh).
Works just fine.

Dan,

introduced, the parking lights remained on when the

I own a 67 SS396 Chevelle, and found an easy way to
change this without adding anything or cutting any

part, especially on a 66-67 Chevelle (with A/C yet),
is removing the light switch from the dash.

Play it safe, and disconnect the battery first. Then
disconnect the light switch from the dash, and drop it
down below the edge of the dash. Before you unplug the
wiring harness from the switch, look at the position
of the purple wire in the connector. It will be in a

dash. Remove the connector from the light switch, and
then release the terminal of the purple wire from the

terminal of the purple wire into the open slot of the
connector which you identified earlier (the one closer
to the dash). Then just reconnect the wiring harness
to the light switch, and reinstall the light switch
into the dash, and reconnect the battery. Now the
parking lights will function as before in the halfway
position, but remain on when the headlights are
switched on.

I did this two years ago on my Chevelle and on a 65
Impala, and haven't had any problems from it. I don't
remember if there are any numbers on the slots in the
connector, or if there was more than one open slot.

[Chevelle-list] front running light conversion

2004-07-26 Thread Dan McIntosh

Hi all,

On my 64 Impala, when I turn on the main
headlights, the running lights turn off.  Exactly the same as when I had my
65 Malibu.

I tried on the Boo to wire in a relay that would
allow them to stay on, but it didn't work out well at all.

Has anyone done this, or seen a website detailing
how this could be done?

Thank you.

This was done in the Virgina area. Really nice people to deal with. I don't
think it matters what you bring them. They don't seem to care. I would get
on the web and do some searching. Make calls and hopefully you can find one
around. Good luck. Guess whats going to happen to my car and utility
trailers in the next couple of years when its time to refinish them. 8)

I think there is something to “etch” the galvanizing to get the paint to stick, some mild form of Muratic acid or something...

I love galvanized parts, I use to galvanize some parts as well but mostly small brackets and bolts,
I do like the idea of doing the whole frame and it will be fully protected inside out.

Remember that you do need some special primer to make paint stick to it.

hi gang
yesterday i dropped my differential and removed my 37 year old rear springs and insulators and replaced them both with new insulators (ebay for $9.99 + shipping) and used springs (also from ebay for less than 20 dollars) the ride is 100% better, i still cant believe how smooth it rides.
the suspension was in really bad shape when i got the car 2 years ago.
i would bottom out on rough roads so i got some spring spreaders and used them on the front until i did the disk brake conversion earlier this year, i installed new(er) front springs at that time.i also had spring spreaders on the rear springs, it helped but still would drag on rough roads or speed bumps, nothing as bad as the sound of your flowmasters dragging bottom. It's hell working on a shoestring budget!
anyway, just thought I'd post this to the group, its been kind of quiet lately. Hows everyone Else's projects going?
would love to hear how everyone else is doing.

Today I finally finished installing the
suspension in my '65.  Two things bug me.   The drag link
is VERY close to the frame.  I think there is maybe a 1/16
inch clearance.  Also, the grease zerts for the inner tie rod ends
hit the frame when turning.  I looked on my old drag link, and someone
had put small caps in the holes.  So I greased the zerts, then put the
old caps on the new tie rods which solved the hitting issue.  Does anyone
