As I said in my message, I know how to diagnose the problem, my problem is that I'm too arthritic to do it myself. Five years ago I would never have written what I did. I simply would have done it. Those days are gone forever. I wasn't looking for a how-to. I was looking for a reliable shop in the Phoenix area that can do it for me. -- Bob Holtzman "If you think you're getting free lunch, ..check the price of the beer!"

Re: [Chevelle-list] BBC roller cam install
Fred I had a similar problem with the button on my small block roller cam install. I found out that I had the wrong button. I don't remember the particulars but there are at least 2 buttons with different lengths. I found this out when I called Comp Cams Tech line to ask what I was doing wrong. They gave me a particular part number to order. Possibly the same situation exists with a big block. Hope this helps. I can't help, but I know a great community that probably can. www.smokemup.com It is a small forum with some VERY knowledgeable engine builders. I would go to the tech forums and do a search in the Performance section. You should be able to find anything you need to know there. Tom
[Chevelle-list] BBC roller cam install
Folks, I am installing my first roller cam in a pre roller bbc and could use your advice. I am a little hung up on the checking/setting of cam end play. With the new chain installed there is no back and forth movement of the cam. I suspect the new (tight) chain is holding it from moving. So, how do I check it? I have thought of determining the end play without the chain installed. Will this change the reading? I am using a steel button with roller bearings and it looks to be about 1/16" too long (can't close the (aluminum) cover). Summit suggested I gradually grind a bit off the front of the button til I have the desired (estimated) .004-.010 clearance. I have thought of installing the cover using some silly putty in place of the button as a gauge to determine how long the button should be for my application. If I could get a good reading I could then match the button minus the .004" clearance. I am using an aluminum cover and note there is a rough slightly raised spot where the button will be. Should I grind this down before I start grinding on the button? I would appreciate any comments/suggestions on this. Thanks, Fred
Re: [Chevelle-list] electrical diagnostics in Phx area
Bob, It's very hard to diagnose electrical problems by e-mail, but what you described is a common problem among Chevy's. A lot of it has to do with heat on the solenoid. Since the Solenoid is mounted on the starter on Chevys, it's close to the exhaust manifold and takes a lot of heat. An overheated solenoid is usually the problem. I believe the technical term for this common condition is called "Heat Soak". Type in the following 3 words at www.google.com to see several sites that talk about it: heat soak chevy There are several ways to tackle this problem. #1 A remote mounted solenoid of the type that Fo** uses is what a lot of hot rod guys do. These kits are available at Jegs or Summit, or you can ask a local parts place if the people behind the counter know what they are doing. #2 Another way is a heat shield plate, or a heat shield wrap to protect the solenoid from the heat. Again, a good parts store should be able to help. #3 Clean connections are absolutely essential and can not be over looked. Take a wire brush and clean all surfaces where the cables mount to the engine and solenoid. Some dielectric grease (such as Dow Corning's DC4) here helps to prevent corrosion and maintain a good connection. Re: [Chevelle-list] electrical diagnostics in Phx area
I'd check the neutral safety switch. You can try moving the selector between N and P or jump the wires when it's not working to check it. RE: [Chevelle-list] Back Package tray ideas
Hi Aaron, I have a 70 Malibu and for a short fix used what you did which is just cardboard so I could make the 2004 Midwest Chevy Nationals Memorial day weekend, and of course it rained, the rear window leaked and warped and ruined the package tray. I purchased a new one from C.A.R.S. Inc. which is a mesh covered tray with a jute backing. This is what my car had originally. You can get it with two cut outs for stereo speakers which do not show because they are covered with the mesh, or without. This company also sells your entire interior needs. The nice part is that they manufacture them themselves, and actually sell them to most of the other suppliers. I purchased from them my head liner which came with sunvisor covers included and it looks great. Hope this helps. www.carsinc.com Best regards, Chuck Speake Cell Phone: (630) 776-0314 [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 29, 2004 9:12 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chevelle-list] Back Package tray ideas Hey guys, Does anyone have any ideas as far as the back package tray goes in a 70 chevelle? [Chevelle-list] electrical diagnostics in Phx area
Does anyone in the Phoenix area know of a shop that can do some diagnostics on a '65 Chevelle? I have an intermittent open circuit in either the starter solenoid, the neutral switch or the ignition switch (I think). After driving the car for 20-30 miles and shutting it off, if I then try to restart it the solenoid won't activate. If I come back in few hours it will start. When it won't start there is no movement of the ammeter indicating an open circuit. The battery checks out O.K. in a load test. The alternator is putting out 14+ volts and charging the battery. I know *how* to diagnose the problem, I'm just too old and arthritic to crawl under the dash or to get the car up on jack stands and get underneath. Any pointers to a shop that knows what they're doing would be appreciated. -- Bob Holtzman "If you think you're getting free lunch, ..check the price of the beer!"
Re: [Chevelle-list] Back Package tray ideas
I built a tray for some 6X9's for my old 64 Impala. I used 1/4" thick tempered hardboard, covered with a layer of cotton batting, and then some color matched vinyl. The factory one had a taller "finishing strip" on the front edge, so I recreated that as well. The result was, it looked like stock, but provided a great mounting surface for the speakers. you can kinda see it in this picture. http://www.lowriderimpala.com/pics/plaque.JPG good luck!
