Yep, when you have 15 red wires and the wiring diagrams suck a$$... Toning
is the way to go. Quick, easy, and the newer multimeters are able to do it
(at least the one I have). For me, toning is faster because I can just rake
the probe over all the wires and it will buzz when it gets to the right one.
Using the ohmmeter is the same concept though.

Six for one, half dozen for the other.

In telecom and networking, 'toning' a wire can be used to identify ends of
wires in multi-wire cabling. A signal generator is hooked to one end, and a
probe is used to pickup the signal at the other end, resulting in a
repeating tone being generated from the signal.

Hi; The 70-396 option was Z25; 454 was Z15. The car should have a blacked
out grille, black rear bumper pad, wheel well mldgs, raised hood and the 5
spoke 14 in. sport rims. There should be a SS emblem on the grille, rear bumper
and steering wheel as well as the front fenders. The dashboard panel should be
black faced and have round gauges. Also the turn signals should be clear, not
amber. Also should have disc brakes up front. hope this helps. MIKE.

Just went out this morning for gas and some guy follows me all the way into
my driveway...

He liked the car so much he offered me a deal I just could not refuse...
especially as I just yesterday wrote the check out for the Insurance...(did
not mail it yet howeverlol) ..
Maybe he was into or sold drugs because he came back within an hourtest
drove the car..with me in the passengers seat.and gave me good old hard
cash.no checks just plain old cash...

An hour after he left I walked into the garage...No 68... WTF... discovered
I already miss the car. (shades of guilt ..I guess)... But then again I
can now begin a search for a replacement... which is kind of fun .. I HOPE

RE: [Chevelle-list] camaro article - ignore

2005-04-26 Thread Crazy Rusty
Lol thanks. It has been keeping me up nights for the past few weeks ;) I
did remove the seats and such and there is a connector on the drivers side
seat belt but I reconnected it. I bought the car purely to resell, I knew
it had been sitting for 8 years and while it was in excellent condition, it
needed some major cleaning which is why I had to take the carpet out to
totally clean it. So I wasn't quite sure the condition of the starter or
switch to start off with. I don't like selling bad cars so I figured what
the hell. (On the other hand, I found out the condition of the fly wheel
and... it's bad). There aren't any more parts to throw at it so I am done
there :) It has to be either a fusible link which I can't seem to find or
the neutral safety switch. The connector is pretty tight into the shifter
so I am fairly certain it's not the neutral safety switch. That only leaves
me with the awful fusible link. They're easy enough to find in the Chevelle
but it's like going into hell on this car.

On the other hand I have toned the wire coming off of the starter (toned it
from the starter to the neutral safety switch), the battery cable (from the
batt to the starter), which leaves only two red wires. I found one of them
last night and toned that which leaves one red wire. If I find that... it
shouldn't tone. The wiring diagrams only show one wire with a fusible so
they are no help either.

Fun fun fun :)

I'll try posting there, thanks for the advice!

couldn't ignore it! I laid awake all night thinking about it :D .
If you removed carpet, you had to remove seats. Is there a seat belt
or seat interlock that you didn't reconnect? Also why would yopu
think that the starter switch would go bad just sitting there? I can
see you possibly blowing the fusible link while working on the car,
but I can't imagine anything you did effecting the switch.

Just suggesting that you not throw parts at a problem. There is a
systematic troubleshooting procedure for almost any problem ( listen
to me talk here). You can save time & money if you take things one
step at a time. Try posting your non-start problem a the
electrical forum of chevelle tech, both John Mutha & Elree Colby
REALLY know their stuff.

Actually, there were more 66s made than 67s according to published figures.
1966 saw 471,052 units (including 23,688 Canadian) while the 67 saw only
403,963 (Canadian numbers not available). Even more SS models built in 66,
66,843 hardtops and 5,429 convertibles, as opposed to the 67 with 59,685
hardtops and 3,321 convertibles.

For 64 vs. 65, they're pretty equal; 387,119 (incl. 16,285 Canadian) 64s
produced vs. 397,750 (incl. 19,132 Canadian) 65s, within 3%.

There was a recent discussion on buildsheets. Buildsheets were used by the
line workers as to the equipment a vehicle was to be assembled with. Once
done with the paper, liner workers would stick the paper in just about any
where they wanted. More to get rid of the paper than anything else - it
wasn't mandatory it stay with the car. Common areas have been under
carpets, stuffed up in the dash, on top of fuel tank (weather got most of
these), above the headliner, stuffed into seats etc. If by chance your car
was built Canadian built, Canada kept a build record for each car shipped -
so you might be in luck. Check your VIN and if not sure submit your VIN
to the list and we can direct you.

I have a '69 Chevelle SS and trying to find the build sheet for the car .
The interior was completely re-done by the previous owner . Asked him if
the build sheet was found then and he said no . Is the a source available
to get a copy of the build sheet from ? Does Chevy have any sort of old
records ( an archieve of build sheet )like that and how can I contact them?

Thanks for any helpPeter Hnat

[Chevelle-list] Good Stories about cars

2005-04-26 Thread Mark Schwartz
Hi All,
I'm a newbie to the list, but one of my favorite parts of being on a list to
hear stories of experience with your cars, a car or vehicle related. I can
start by sharing mine.

My second car was a 1971 chevelle convertible. I paid 2,000 for it back in
1980. I drove the snot out of it. Well my story was me hanging out with a
coworker. He was small of statue, but very outgoing. Anyways, my car has
ps, and pdb on it. We are just doing some driving around in the hills in N.
calif. The day was gorgeous, so the top was down. The car was gold
metallic with black stripes and a bubble hood. (cowl hood without the
flap). It had a 327 vette motor in it connected to a turbo 350 at.
corvette rallys finished out the package. It was a nice and fun car.

Anyway, back to the story. We are crusing up the hills in fremont just
looking at nice houses and chatting. Not buying anything, but just enjoying
the ride. We were driving up a windy road to the homes and then back down.
One the way down, my brakes got too hot and stopped working. I'm going down
this 2 lane road and it dead ends into a busy street. So as I'm coming
down, my buddy is being his usual chatter box type self. We are about 3
turns from the end and picking up speed pretty quickly. I know that the
last street before the deadend has some houses on it and it's long. I lean
over to my buddy and tell him to put on his seatbelts because we have no
brakes. He instantly stops talking and turns bright white...

I'm running about 40 - 45 mph, maybe faster. Looking at the speedo wasn't
too high on my priority list. So I have the end of the road in sight. It's
a T at the end of the road. My emergency brake isn't working properly, so
that's out So I come to the last street before the Tee and hang a HARD
right. Luckily with downshifing and a little uphill in the road, I roll to
a stop. It takes about 10 minutes for my heart to stop racing, but it
finally comes down.

Thank goodness our cars handle. It would have really sucked to smash my car
into another one or into a stationary object...

You have to be careful using wording as it has different meaning depending
on where you are from. Around here a Mullet is a fish mostly used for bait,
but some old timers also use that term for their "Johnson". I have an Elky,
but a very conservative hair style and don't know anyone with their "mullet"
on their head.

Hi,
I'm 47, prematurely gray.
People ask if I bought my 64 new! : (

First 64 Chevelle came in 77 when I was in Orlando Florida.
Courtesy of US Navy that car went through every state between Florida and
Massachusetts.
(Fla, Ga, SC, NC, Va, Del, Md, Pa, NJ, NY, Conn, RI, Mass)
Fast forward 20+ years: The rust had caught up with it.
330,00 miles on odometer! Saw it rollover twice.
The money spent to fix that one would probably take care of the other three
Chevelles so it had to go.
Sold her to a professional welder, best chance for a car that needed so much
sheetmetal replaced.
A pro street project I suspect.
Didn't ask, didn't want to know.
Still have the 2dr wagon, 4dr sedan, SS hardtop, all 64's.

I've used mine to haul lumber a few times. If you think people are awed when
they see a decent classic El Camino, you should see the looks on their faces
when they see a decent classic El Camino carrying a full load of lumber!

acting like their cars are farm trucks,we would have a good start.

RE: [Chevelle-list] camaro article - ignore

2005-04-26 Thread John Nasta
I agree with Rick. The "I thought maybe it was this, so I replaced it"
method is not the best approach. Think about wiring that runs near or under
the carpet that might have gotten jostled. There is quite a lot you can
accomplish with a simple test light. For instance, if your starter S
terminal is not getting juice when the key is in the start position, don't
bother replacing the starter. A new starter that is also not getting juice
will not solve the problem. You can also usually poke the test light into
the backs of the plastic connectors. If there is juice on one side of a
connector but not the other, or at both sides of one connector but not at
the next one, there's your problem.

Also don't forget to check the fuses with a test light. Poke the tester in
on the "cold" side of each fuse. Sometimes fuses look ok at a glance, but
they are not. a test light will tell you whether or not they are actually
conducting electricity rather than just what they look like they are doing.

couldn't ignore it!

With regard to the 68 being a red headed step child, it's kinda like the
"thru cars" in the Tri Five group . Everybody refers to them as the 55
thru 57 Chevy which makes the 56 the "thru car". Never talked about but
definately there. Red headed step child. But seen some of them grow up
into good looking red heads - so never underestimate the potential or the
unusual.

I'm 57 and have yet to have the pleasure of owning a Chevelle. I'm a Chevy fan
and I'm owned just about every other Chevrolet built from Vega's to Impalla's
and hope to someday find the Chevelle I want. I was looking when I found a 70
Skylark Custom little old lady car with only 37k miles. I presently own a
restored-modified 63 Nova and I'm presently restoring a 70 Nova and the 70
Skylark. Don't boot me off the list, I'm still looking but I can't handle
another project right now till I finish the ones I started.

I am 55. My first Chevelle was a 65 SS 327 4sp convert. What a car. It
was a warmed over 327 and really flew.

About 6 years ago, my son and I bought another chevelle, a 72. It was a
basket case and if I had it to do again would have started with something a
little better shape. We have learned a lot, have finally put the body back
on the frame and ready to drop the original 307 back in and then off to the
body shop.

I'm 42 and I originally bought my El Camino for my brother, because he said
he always dreamed of having one. Personally, the one I would have "dreamed"
about would have been a 69 convertible. However, the EC sat in my brother's
driveway for about 2 years until his wife got tired if looking at it, and I
always liked 69s. So, I bought it back from bro Joe (methinks I never fully
paid him for it), and put it back together. It is now very respectable and
in full service. I was just thinking the other day that I should have taken
pictures on days like when I was using it to haul lumber in rain and snow,
or the day I had a whole pallet plus a few boxes of Pergo flooring in the
back.
